  • Michael Sheridan is a distinguished journalist and author of The Gate to China: A New History of the People’s Republic and Hong Kong. He first reported from Hong Kong and China in June 1989 at the time of the Tiananmen Square massacre, and later served as The Sunday Times’ Far East Correspondent for 20 years. He covered the handover of Hong Kong in 1997, and the city’s struggle for democracy over 20 years later, and is a regular contributor to international media.
In this episode, he discusses with Benedict Rogers the history of the negotiations leading up to the handover of Hong Kong, the dismantling of Hong Kong’s freedoms, the imprisonment of Jimmy Lai, the state of press freedom in Hong Kong, what the United Kingdom and the international community should do, and the future for Hong Kong.
