Carrie Fisher may have found it gratuitous, but I felt it was i line with Leia's character. She proved she was capable of defending herself from the beginning, and by killing Jabba, she proved it again, in spite of being dressed in slave attire. The only thing that was out of character was when they softened her and stuck her with the Ewoks
