1:56 *THANK GOD* they put clothes on Jar Jar for the entire the movie!
Yeah, I don't know why people hated him 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Could have been far worse...
The 1940s-50s space opera aesthetic that George was going for is very evident in the concept art
5:34 I can imagine Samuel L. Jackson's reaction to the suggested outfit concept - "I ain't wearin' that shit, George, don't even ask me!"
Fun fact: that outfit was later used for another Jedi, Rig Nema, in The Clone Wars (she was essentially the Jedi's chief doctor).
This is why the art concept is important in filmmaking. It helps the entire film crew understand what the director wants
25 years later we still talking about episode I . All the cool movies from the same era are already forgoten
Are you telling me Matrix, Blade, X-Men, Spiderman, Harry Potter, Jurassic park are forgotten?
I love Doug Chaing's artwork, I think he was a very worthy successor to Ralph Mcquary.
The editing in the video is AWESOME.
Thank you! More to come 😀
I think I had never seen the early designs for the Neimoidians. They basically looked like the living-creature version of the battle droids. It's quite interesting to see that the very specific and iconic design of the battle droids was originally meant to be reflect the appeance of their creators, which I guess is a very logical thing to do. Funny how Neimoidians ended up looking almost like that alien from the cantina scene in ANH... I actually thought it was the same species for the longest time until one day I found out it's a different species called Duro. I also kind of see this early Neimoidian design being later repurposed, with some modifications, for the Geonosians.
John Williams wrote an epic soundtrack to this film!
Imagine being able to see these long before the movie came out, only able to fantasise about what the resulting movie would be like.
It was great being a child when TPM came out. It was a really exciting time and that excitement lingered for long time and penetrated deeply.
2:47 looks like Utapau
6:46 on the right looks like Mother Talzin
Naboo was originally supposed to be called Utapau.
1:09 I really loved the art concept for Obi Wan in the middle, It just looks like him if he was a dark Jedi from the Old Republic era in EU Continuity
The concept art is fantastic! Did they post all of it officially anywhere? Where'd you grab these pieces?
There's a whole bunch of this stuff in The Star Wars Archives: 1999-2005.
@@occam7382 Is that a book?
@@barttheraven, yes. It was written by Paul Duncan and goes into the entire production of Episodes l-lll.
@@occam7382Mannnnn, I was just at the mall and the book was there, I was looking at it
Be warned all who read this, "the Star Wars archives: 1999 - 2005" does not have all the artwork in this video. I got dissapointed when I got it
5:33 looks like Samuel L. Jackson is cosplaying Amidala
4:51 this Coruscant scene is actually created exactly for 1997 original trilogy Special Edition Rotj ending
Brilliant video!! So good 🫡🙏🥇
The jedi looking like they are wearing precursors to Lukes RotJ robes makes way more sense than the robes we got. Jedi look way more "jedi knight" in all black. Battle droids that look like proto storm troopers... The nemodian looking droids are wild too. Lucas desperately needed real challenging collaborators and not producer/yes man Rick McCallum....
Proto-stormtroopers is this clones troopers. Anakin appeared in ROTJ in robe.
The different Jedi designs look so much better, I don't know why all the Jedi dress like Uncle Owen.
Exactly. Obi wan wore those clothes in the OT because he was living on tatooine. They're desert clothes not jedi clothes. George lucas misunderstood the design.
They don't all dress like that though. Most of them do but not all of them.
@sebastienr7852 lucas misunderstood scenes in the OT like greedo shooting at the same time as Han, the addition of the Jabba scene but jedi do look cool with those robes. Can't imagine them dressing any other way except for those characters that don't. Luke literally dresses the same way just in all black in ROTJ. He's a jedi.
@@sebastienr7852 Yeah, it would been an excellent contrast from Obi wan wearing this and maybe wearing full Jedi armour late in the clone wars(A star wars version of Samurai armour, maybe even sorta close to Vaders armour) to him wearing hermit clothes. You'd be wondering who "Ben kenobi" was, and be even more suprised at the reveal. Perfect visual representation of Kenobi long and varied life
I think the idea is they generally dress "modestly." That's why Anakin recognized Qui Gon as a jedi by his "laser sword."
Any hate for episode 1-3 is so undeserved. Especially if you consider anything else than Andor from Disney as Star Wars. I don't consider any Disney Production as Star Wars, like I don't consider any Lord of the Rings Productions of Amazon as such.
The designs are so good and epic. Disney could never do this, and even if they could, they would dump them into the wastepaper pucket.
The special effects are still so good! Especially of episode 1 - but 2 and 3 are still very well made. Only some clonetrooper shots miss global illumination and look very computer game like. Probably they had to rush this and had too many companies and one was not up to quality... but overal episode 1-3 still look very good today!
I clearly prefer the aesthetics over Avatar, where everything looks very CG. I love the good mix with practical effects. Like in Lord of the rings.
Star Wars 1-3 and Lord of the Rings Trilogy where the must stunning movies of my childhood. Maybe Matrix 1, too.
One of the concept designs for Darth Maul looks like a nightsister. And the concept design of Nute Gunray looks similar to the Geonosians from Attack of the Clones.
Concept of Gunray rather resemble Sebulba i think.
That’s so cool!
this is great
Ep 2 and 3 next please
So much potential
The movie lived up to it
The Phantom Menace was, and still is, a really great movie! The concept arts are great too, but the final movie was a masterpiece on its own!
@@samuelgeaney7556 Please.
@@darthlucasfuu It sure looks expensive!
Slow down please, I want to appreciate each conceptual art more.
pause the video 👍
I would take any of the concept battle droid versions than the end result. They look like if you just give them the slightest push they'll just crumble. Not very intimidating
But they also have a lifeless skeletal look to them that I think works (and matched the original niemodian, later the Geonosian, concept art). Which also makes them bug-like, fitting as they infest the flourishing Naboo.
@@obvious_owl7206 Yeah, those battle droids are supposed to look that way. They may not look intimidating but they can kill you.
That's the point, though? They're not meant to be intimidating; they were never meant to be intimidating. Just like how the Neimoidians were never meant to be intimidating. It was the Sith we were supposed to be scared of. Everyone else were mere pawns.
