Elvis '73 Pt.1: Making Tracks At Stax - His Last Truly Great Year? Book And CD Set Unboxing

In this first look at Elvis in 1973, I ask whether it can be seen as a watershed year, marking the start of a gradual decline in his career. Along the way, I delve into some vinyl, CD and book releases. NB. In the opening minutes, I incorrectly refer to the date of Aloha From Hawaii as February 14th when I should, of course, have said January 14th.

Aloha Sean, great review on this historic concert with the most iconic jumpsuit he ever wore
Thank you, yes definitely instantly recognisable 👍🏻
Hello, You didn't mention that the earlier releases had that horrid muddy sound from the 70s. We had to wait decades for the modern remixes that make it even more amazing. Great video. Kepp up the good work.
Very good point, thanks for watching 👍🏻
although he never really sung a new song that concert, but I've always loved his gentler more ballad voice and the reverb sound of the concert. RIP king
Great video mate , it was a great start to a year for Elvis that many would have to say ended badly with Divorce. I still feel that he had a great year and did some fantastic shows . I wish they would do a box set like Aloha on his other live shows thou
Cheers Paul, box sets on other shows that were recorded would be great!
I hope your aloha special video gets a Billion views my brother , love the Aloha special, great video ,as always brother ,have a great week👍👍
Thanks brother, pleased you enjoyed it, have a great week too!
The resaon why the picture is only average [at best] is that they worked from a copy transferred back in the 90's. Anyone else, and the mastertapes would have been sourced for optimum picture quality. Same old, same old with Elvis releases. Thanks for the consistently good uploads.
Very good point, thanks for watching 👍🏻
Hi Sean, I've been watching your channel for about the last three weeks l really like it and have just subscribed. I was wondering about three weeks ago l wish there was a book about Elvis and the Alloha concert in colour as l think his jumpsuit's look better in colour. When l saw that giant book in this video 40th Anniversary l had to purchase it. So thank you for the recommendation and I look forward to future video reports on your channel. Take Care.
@dinshawpocha4882 Hi there, thanks so much for watching and supporting the channel, it's hugely appreciated and I'm glad you're enjoying it. Fine choice on the purchase there, it really is the gold standard for documenting Aloha, and you'll have many a happy hour leafing through it. Glad to have helped you find it 😊 you take care too!
Hi Sean.Another great video covering such an iconic event in the world of Elvis. However I was a bit surprised that you didn't cover the Lorentzon book.Elvis the king of Hawaii? was this intentional as I was curious to here your opinion on it? keep up the good work you give me something to look forward to on these winter Sunday nights.
Hi there Daren, thanks for the kind words, appreciate the support 👍🏻 quite often when I don't include things it's because I manage to completely forget about them, but this omission was intentional, as Aloha only enters the picture 276 pages in, with the rest of the book focussing primarily on the 3 movies shot in Hawaii. I will get around to featuring it at some point though. I've just had a quick flick through it and have to say that it's better than I remembered, occasionally the reproduction of some of the photos leaves a lot to be desired, but overall it's not bad at all, although not as good as Lorentzen's 'The King of Las Vegas' IMO
How can I get this
You should be able to pick it up at any good book seller. Amazon definitely stock it
Hey mate ,hoping you can help me ,do you now the web page/ site where I can buy the new Elvis on record volume 2 1966 to 1981 ? By Paul Alner I'm wanting to buy it
Hey Paul, sure buddy, you need Elvis 4 Sale, or Paul sells them himself on eBay under the name elvisonrecord
Great video Sean!
Cheers Mark, looking forward to the next of your top fives!
Hi, Thank you for the interesting introductions to each video ! Greetings from Germany
Hi Ronald, thanks for watching!
Nice presentation Sean. I agree that Elvis looked a bit stiff in thw aloha show. I enjoy the rehearsal beter. Great books, i do have the aloha thru the eyes of Japan book. I thought the extra photos were very cool to get. Have a great week. Juan
Thanks Juan, the Eyes of Japan book is really nice, isn't it? Have a great week too!
Great job, looking forward to seeing the next one
@JohnBull14 thank you 😊 appreciate the support 👍🏻
Hi Sean, another great video. In early 1973 l was living in Germany. On the 15th January we watched Elvis Aloha from Hawaii Concert on our TV in colour. Our living room was packed with people wanting to watch Elvis. As you can imagine! We were not disappointed either what a concert! As l remember it was only a week or two before the LP was out in the shops. Which l brought right away too!
@eleanorhoneywill6527 Hi Ellie, wow, what a fantastic memory to cherish, seeing it at the time and in colour too! Must have been a fantastic atmosphere in that room. Thanks so much for sharing 😊
I to have the Japan book it is beautiful version. Also have that box set book still sealed but for me is the gold standard.
Yes, both fantastic books, but the Boxcar one is the more luxurious presentation for sure
@sincerelyelvispresley Yes, it is the standard for this concert,
Parker as everybody knows did not want to travel outside the US for fear of not getting back into the states as he was an illegal alien. Also , Elvis was afraid of performing in an arena setting over there because of his experience at the Vancouver performance back in the 50's in which fans rushed the stage and he was lucky to escape alive. The after concert songs are a blessing. It was impossible to reach that concert viewer numbers that were claimed as there were not enough tv's in the World for people to see the concert.
Thanks Brian, completely agree 👍🏻
I never knew that about Todd Slaughter. Lovely set of books, Sean. I'm glad you like Through the Eyes of Japan. I know how much work went into preparing the images in the book from the original negatives (that was nothing to do with me. My part was easy in comparison). Looking forward to the next one.
Thanks David, you must be proud to have been involved in such a fine tome. What with that and your fabulous 'From Memphis To Tokyo', huge respect from me - particularly as someone who appreciates both detail and aesthetics!
Another great vid! The book with the slip cover is quite nice. 👍 I'll trade you straight across, my copy of the Presley Family Cookbook (autographed by Uncle Vestor) for it! 🤣😂🤣😂
Thanks for the offer, but tempting though it is, I think I'll pass on that one 😅
Another great video , I love it that they included photos from 72 at the same venue,it sort of ties it all together
Thanks Paul 👍🏻 yes, that definitely gives it a nice cohesive feel
Brilliant stuff as usual Seán, not jealous of your book collection at all👀👀👊👊🤣🤣
@LongBlackLimousine thanks my friend, glad you enjoyed it 😊
As written by Angie Marchese re. London exhibition: This is the rehearsal suit but the cape is the one that was worn during the show and tossed into the audiences it was gifted back to Graceland in 1995 when its owner willed it to be when he passed away. In total there were 2 suits, 3 belts, 1 long cap and 3 waist length capes made in total. In the Graceland archives, we have both suits we have the cape that was tossed into the audience. We have the third Cape that was made for the suit when Elvis were on tour and we have the third belts. Display London is the rehearsal suit the third belt and the actual cape from the broadcast After the Aloha performance and Elvis toss the cape and the belt from that show into the crowd, he had Bill make a second cape and belt so he can wear it with the jumpsuit in Vegas. Elvis then gave that cape and belt to Ed Parker, his karate instructor so a third Cape and belt was made for the suit. Both the third Cape and belt are still in the Graceland archives. The belt is actually what is on display in London along with the stage worn cape and the rehearsal outfit. There is a slight difference between the rehearsal and stage one outfit and it’s around the belt buckle. It is the number of studs that are around the Eagles. The way you could tell the difference between the suits is the one that was worn in the show. One of The eagle at the zipper is not completely studded around. the rehearsal outfit Both eagles on either side of the zipper are completely around. The original belt is still at large.
@@dontneedahande thanks Gary, fascinating stuff 👍🏻
@@sincerelyelvispresley Originally he was meant to wear the full length eagle cape, but it was too heavy!
I heard ages ago that the original belt was given to Jack Lord's wife she requested Elvis for it before the concert. Jack Lord was in Hawaii 5-0 one of the best cop shows in the 1970's.
@dinshawpocha4882 yes, that's a great story, isn't it?
Enjoyed your Aloha from Hawaii video very much but really looking forward to your next one concerning what you have sound and visual wise. Thanks for a brilliant channel Sean, take care, Julie
Thanks so much, Julie, glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for your support. Take care too!
Nice one my friend , you are very right about those books ,the last two are just marvelous ,again a great video ,thank's . Have a great week brother👍👍
Thanks brother, glad you enjoyed it. Have a fantastic week!
Most probably most watched it in black and white as the majority didn't have colour tv
An excellent point! I'd never even considered that
I agree 1973 was his last great year even though his voice stayed brilliant to the end.I could have done without the shock of watching the Elvis In Concert shocker in 1977.👑👑👑
Absolutely agree, I know his voice never deserted him, but I only ever watched Elvis in Concert when it was first broadcast and haven't been able, or wanted to, since
Hi Sean, I had several books in the 80s with fantastic photos by Sean Shaver. One in particular was called Elvis in Concert and showed Elvis on stage in 1975. These photos were superb in that they were taken close to the stage and with modern SLR cameras that showed a crisp sharp image of Elvis onstage, which hitherto had not really been possible it seems, with the earlier cameras. Question : why have all (or most) of these photos disappeared from the internet? Copywriter reasons, or what ? Is he dead and if so, why have all the photos disappeared ? Cheers. G
Hi there, I'm not sure what the answer to that is tbh, and I'm not entirely sure whether Sean Shaver is alive or not. I have a couple of his books and I do know that the last Elvis book he published was 'Elvis In Focus' some 32 years ago, so for whatever reason he clearly decided to check out of the Elvis world. I had heard that some of the photos in his books weren't always his own work, but whether or not that's true or has any bearing on why the images can't be found online, I don't know
Cheers, thanks for your comments. It is odd because some of the shots are pretty awesome. I no longer have the damn book!
@user-xt3rf2le3d which one did you have?
Do you recommend vol 4 and 5 as a standalone purchase? Won't be getting 1-3 because there's no access to them.
Personally, I wouldn't go for just 4 and 5 on their own. I'd go for the softcover photo folio. That said, The Elvis Shop London has all of them, and 1-3 are still at their original price or thereabouts
Private Parker's deal with RCA for the royalty sellback in '73, was the biggest blunder since the Titanic struck the iceburg in 1912. Talk about selling for a song! 👎
Very true, always short-term greed with no foresight with him - Private Parker - like it!
Another great review Shaun, when you do the Aloha cds can you dig deep into the various audio on these different releases? It's so confusing especially the Legacy release? What's happening with the main show on this?
Hi, thank you. I recorded the episode on the Aloha audio that I have in my collection a while ago, and from what I remember, I do talk about the audio quality differences on the numerous releases. Hopefully it'll be what you're after 🤞🏻
I'm very happy to have found the 3 CD Deluxe boxset of stax last month and just got the single CD from stax. 🎉
Great finds! 👍🏻
Have to disagree about Raised On Rock, I've always loved it !
The track, or the album or both?
@sincerelyelvispresley definitely both. Really enjoyed your video as well.
I do like the groove of the track itself, just find the lyrics weird coming from Elvis. Can't find much love for Three Corn Patches though! 🙂 Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching 👍🏻
Hi Sean, didn't you mean to say January 14 Aloha instead of February 14?😂😊
Hiya, did I say February? What am I like? Even missed that in the edit. Apologies and thanks for pointing out 🙂
@sincerelyelvispresley 😂😂🤣🤣 don't worry about it, we are all human. Found it funny.
We understand what you mean mate by the door of the gas
Cheers bud 👍🏻
Must be something about the separate ways album lol ,I have 8 copies from around the world. Stax material is great but I agree the December material is far better . Today groups etc record a album ,back then it was all about recording as many songs and leaving it to the label to issue however they liked . I think I'm safe in saving Elvis probably had no say on what song went on what album
Hey Paul, yes seems as though SW is special to a fair few of us. I know EP had some degree of say in what singles were released, but you're probably right about the album content
Hi, Sean. I think he took his foot off the gas, as you say, a few times in his life. It's just human nature. However, after Aloha, there doesn't seem to have been as much left in the tank as before. I still enjoy the post-Aloha music but, as TCB Steve says below, maybe a world tour might have been what he really needed next. As for the Stax albums, for me, Promised Land is slightly better than Good Times is slightly better than Raised on Rock. Like you, I'm not too fond of Three Corn Patches but he doesn't sound any more enthused about If You Don't Come Back.
Hi David, yes I agree that a world tour would probably have done the trick, but then I guess there's every chance that had that have happened, it may have ended up becoming another routine that he may have grown tired of. The 70s are certainly the decade of 'what ifs'
In 1970 almost everything he touched turned to gold. Studio stuff and live, he was consistently incredible. Somehow come 1971's studio sessions there is a noticeable difference in his voice. It's kind of subtle but it is, in my opinion, not a good difference. Later in the year he does a mini tour that seems to have been fantastic. I think from 71-77 we see an ever increasing inconsistency in his work. Each year has great moments, but also not so great moments. The ratio of low moments to high moments gradually increasing and snowballing as the end neared. I think this is quite an unpopular opinion. I'm not trying to antagonise anyone, and I am also not meaning to be overly critical or harsh, but I honestly think Aloha is really bad. American Trilogy from Aloha is by this stage absolutely iconic, and I totally understand and agree that it was a huge milestone and achievement over all, but sometimes I think it's damaging to Elvis's legacy. It is so revered by so many fans and so many of the fans describe it as his best ever performance. I truly don't understand why anyone thinks that. I worry that comments like that may steer people away from watching and/or hearing the true brilliance of Elvis on top form. Aloha is laced with subtle occasional slurring. His voice is nasal and shaky. This is particularly noticeable in quieter moments outwith the loud operatic high notes and finishes (which are very impressive). He fights for control of his voice and does his best, but it's quite far removed from the effortless full control and precision we see back in 1970. So by this stage I guess I sound like a total later years Elvis hater. I'm really not. There's a version of what now my love recorded just a few weeks after Aloha on that MRS 1973 release which is significantly better and vastly superior in every way (apart from sound quality). That nasal shakiness is somehow almost completely gone. His voice sounds so much better. I'm hoping it's now clearer that I didn't write the Aloha criticism as a hater dismissing Elvis. I wrote it as this brings me back to my opinion about the inconsistency and the ratio of bad to good etc. There are gigs from 1974 that are basically infamous and seen by some as some of the lowest moments of his career. At the same time I think there were actually quite a lot of performances from 1974, and some from 75, where he sounded better than he had in years. Some really fantastic performances where he's in great voice. 1976 seems to be a year marred by nasal voice problems and has the infamous Houston gig of course but we've also got those December 1976 shows and the legendary Pittsburgh show just a few months later which were a huge return to form. I've waffled so much now I'm not even sure why I'm writing all of this anymore! For me it's all about the slowly snowballing levels of inconsistency and I think it's most likely linked to his health problems and the pills. I think he suffered a lot and he really cared about his fans, his friends and family and he kept going as best as he could until the end. It's just so sad how it all panned out. I realise a lot of what I wrote in this comment is subjective and based mostly on personal opinions which some people may thoroughly disagree with and that's just fine. I'd just like to conclude by saying I absolutely adore Elvis and his music.
Thanks for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it and I, for one, totally get what you're saying. I know some folk like to look at absolutely everything Elvis did with rose coloured specs and I totally get that too. Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong at all with a bit of healthy constructive criticism and trying to put what happened into some sort of context. I do think that some of the shortcomings of Aloha were down to nerves, though, particularly as the rehearsal is noticeably looser.
@@sincerelyelvispresley Thanks. It was maybe a bit unfair of me not to consider the nerves of the occasion. Most people would be terrified to just go on that stage. Even more so to tackle some of those high notes on that stage.
Hi Sean Elvis 1972 true one of the best year Madison Square Garden-
For sure, thanks Nigel 😊
You welcome my friend Sean
Hey Sean true great video my friend Elvis 1973 keep up cool work buddy
Thanks my friend 👍🏻
Respectfully, disagree with your remark about Priscilla. Yes, divorcing her left a mark on his life but not because of Priscilla but because of Lisa.I guess we all have a different opinions about this. Also, as far as I know they sold recording rights because Elvis had to pay up Priscilla huge amount of money as divorce settlement
I guess we'll never know the truth for sure, but you make a very good point, particularly about the divorce settlement. Thanks for watching and commenting 🙂
Another great video and content and Separate Ways LP was first LP I personally bought from my news paper round money in 1981. Great album with great memories 👍🏼
Cheers Paul, love SW!
Great video buddy , 1973 was the pinnacle year that made Elvis immortal, the jewel on his crown ,nobody did what he did with the Aloha show, after that he indeed needed more challenges in the form of a world tour ,but allas that was never to be , I agree that after that he started loosing interest ,such a shame for such a great man
Thanks brother, definitely a shame the way things turned out, but I've always felt that in some way his life was mapped out to end when it did. Just can't imagine an old Elvis somehow. Have a great week 👍🏻
@sincerelyelvispresley have a great week too brother 👍,say hello to your lovely wife👍👍
Hi there!!! The 1973, “Elvis” LP actually contains 7 tracks from 1971, 2 studio songs from 1972 and 1 live, also from Vegas ‘72. I also think the dissension of the majority who believe that the “Raised On Rock/For ‘Ol Times Sake” is the weakest of the STAX albums is, of course, subjective!!! Take care my friend. 😊
Hi Frankie, oh for sure, any appraisal of an Elvis album will definitely always be subjective, and what some will absolutely love, others will feel the opposite. Although for me it's difficult to find any positives in 'Three Corn Patches' 😊 you take care too!
A Very good watchable video Sean 😀 I agree with most or all that you have said and expressed here as well !! Yes .....he should have finally fired Parker 🤡😡 after the Closing Show in September!! Just didn't seem to have it in himself to do it ....Vernon didn't help the situation if I recall ! He needed a new challenge Yes .....and shows outside the US 🇺🇸 would have been an incredible motivation! ! Disappointedly sad looking back 😢! Still great music was recorded....definitely lost his Mo Jo ! Cheers 🎙🎶🥂
Thanks Paul, it's a shame everything went down the way it did for sure
I don't think 56 was he best year from the 50s ,66 from 60s and 76 from the 70s ( bit of a pattern there ) . But what I'm getting at is even in all of my three low periods he still knocked out some real belters . Luv the show.
@marklacam9748 Hi Mark, agree that every year had great tracks (apart from those when nothing was recorded) but just don't think there was any consistency after 73
