We just did this as a day hike today and holy crap I must be getting old because it absolutely destroyed me. We messed up and hiked on the trail to the waterfall first so that was an extra 1.5 miles then when we started the final ascent to Angel we thought that it looked like billy goating up lookers right would be best and it was extremely difficult and we came down the way you did and realized how big of a mistake it was to climb lookers right. It's weird that there was still a little ice left on the lake but the level was too low to flow out of that crag which would have been cool to see. It definitely reminded me of some lakes in the Winds where a cirque surrounds a lake that is basically sitting on a cliff. Your video was really good as i wished i would have found it before today because your drone shot showed pretty clearly which way would have been best to climb and ascend and yes i was glad i didn't pack my drone because the wind was very gusty and never let off all day up there.

There are a couple of unfortunate things about the town of Gilmore. One is it is a superfund site and a few years ago someone purchased the upper part of the town of Gilmore and you no linger have access to the old buildings there. You can still access lower Gilmore but I was so sad I couldn’t have my usual picnic at the upper part of the town.

I have not been to Meadow Lake in over 40 years. They didn’t have any camp sites, restrooms, grills, tables or benches at that time. I must say most all of the cabins at that time were more complete. I know I saw probably a dozen wood burning stoves inside of a lot of structures. There was a Robertson Mercantile there and the wooden floor was broken and I had knelt down and found a silver dollar. 1890 date. It’s sad to see that people have taken so much from there. I feel it would have been nice for future generations to enjoy. I will be returning again this July 2024. Going just to relax. Thank you for the excellent video, you did a great job recording. The place is still beautiful and trust me, I remember the mosquitos but with “OFF Repellent” anyone would be okay.

I'm getting addicted to your nice videos, with the added bonus of really nice job on the drone shots. Have spent all my 70+ years of life in the beloved Olympic Mountains, mostly off trail, starting with my grandfather. I drive a little Corolla that has a surprisingly high clearance - at least for a sedan - and have gone up some pretty wild Forest Service spur roads to get close to the ONP boundary. That said, I wonder if I can get within maybe 4 or 5 miles of the trailhead...I don't mind hiking roads at all...just not like 10 miles of road hiking or something like that. What do you think? Can I get fairly close to the trailhead? I appreciate you guys, looking forward to more videos.

Hello Lawrence, thanks for the great comments and we are glad that you like the videos! It’s great to hear your stories and it’s cool that you got your start hiking with your grandfather. I would not recommend trying to access Miriam Lake with a passenger car. There are just way too many big rocks and a couple of steep sections, Kane Lake, iron bog, or sawtooth lake would be 100% doable with your Corolla, I could be wrong though about Miriam Lake so it might be worth it to make the attempt but my gut tells me you really do need a four-wheel-drive vehicle for that one. thanks again and good luck!

Wow, what a quick reply! Okay, I'll take your advice, you know the road. I totally appreciate this information. Regarding Kane Lake, I loved that video as well. I especially liked your side trip up the waterfall to that little cirque/basin with the mini-tarn. Gorgeous, my kind of off-trail place. Looks like some careful scrambling would get me up there, even with a bit of an overnight pack to bivouac up there. I like that kind of stuff. I was reading recent reports about Kane Lake, and they indicated that the road is "worse than ever", whatever that means. I'll look at Iron Bog and Sawtooth Lake, though Kane looks awfully nice. Planning for last week of July. I assume there will be some crowds, but looks like a fair number of somewhat isolated camps. If you guys ever get over this way, hit me up for the really "good stuff" in the backcountry Olympic Mountains...a lifetime of hiking makes me a human encyclopedia for that area. Also, if you are headed for North Cascades at some point, I have some "beauty spots" that will knock your sox off as well. If it would appeal to you to read about my grandfather and his wonderful influence on me, I have a little memoriam about him that I think you two would like, about a five minute read. In any case, keep on hitting us with those beautiful videos. :-) @@beataclintadventures304

Wow, that is so awesome that you had visited the lake that long ago! The early 2000’s were the first time we made it up there. The lake seemed about the same at that time, but there was a lot less visitors and the trail was much less developed. Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for sharing!

@@beataclintadventures304 I used to camp in a meadow on the NE side near where you camped. The ground was soft enough to get a good nights sleep🙂. Once I dragged a 4X5 view camera and film holders loaded with Ekta chrome transparency film up there and got a great picture of the lake after an early September morning snowfall. Places like Kane Lake, Bruneau Canyon, Boise River, Silver City, Warm Lake, various hot springs, etc. were my escape from military life. Later in Boise met my dear wife but we moved away due to the price of real-estate.

Hi, great video. I’m planning a trip there next year. Question: are campfires prohibited?

    • @beataclintadventures304

Thanks! Hope you have a great time. Yes, fires are prohibited at both Alpine and Sawtooth lakes.

50lb pack is crazy. You could easily cut that weight in half and have a much more enjoyable trip

    • @beataclintadventures304
      @beataclintadventures304 6 місяців тому

For sure! This year my goal is 36lbs pack weight and also I’ll be 20 lbs lighter! Going to have to get a lighter sleeping pad at a minimum, so that’s going to hurt my wallet.

Awesome!! A great hike for sure, but we are definitely fans of the Redfish shuttle. Take the first shuttle so you get the best camping spot!

What type of drone do you own,. If you don't mind me asking..

      It’s a DJI mini 3.

We own a bebop 2 from Parrot For the past few years. Obviously not very backpacker, friendly. The mini three is the one I would like to upgrade to. My old drone has to have an outlet to recharge everything. And does not fold. Could you let me know what your thoughts are about? The Mini 3 flying in wind. Or any other issues. Thank you.. Howard and kris

What was the mileage and elevation gain?

    • @beataclintadventures304

If you use the Redfish lake shuttle to take you across Redfish lake, it is just under 10 miles with 2800 feet vertical to Barron lake.

This area looks a lot like Oregon's Wallowa Mtns. Maybe it's the same geologically (but not necessarily - Vermont's Green Mtns look like NY's Adirondacks at first glance but geologically they are VERY different).

Thanks for the comment! i’m curious what your thoughts would be on the Lemhi range. In our shadow Lakes video, you can see that the mountains are formed by stratified layers of rock twisted up on their sides. It’s an interesting area geologically.

I live down in Iona and thinking about doing this hike in the Spring. I'm surprised you didn't do any fishing. There is probably some Golden Trout or Graylings there. Maybe you didn't bring gear and a cooking outfit. Maybe next time. Great hike and video.

Hi Gerry, for sure! It’s a great hike and I talked to a guy that stocked Angel with fish via a helicopter, so they are up there! Check out Moose Lake on your map as well.

I hate saying Idaho is underrated because then it may attract more hiking traffic. But Idaho may just have some of the most gorgeous section of all the Rockies, USA or Canada. It doesn't get the love because they wisely established Wilderness Areas and avoided the National Park designations.

Couldn’t agree more. I think the mountains in Idaho are the best. Not too big, not too small.

Day hiked to Angel Lake about 10 years ago. Came up from Moose Lake, up and over the saddle down to Angel Lake, then back to the trailhead via the way you came up to the lake. 12 hours total hiking. It was absolutely brutal but worth it. Probably the most picturesque lake in central Idaho.
