I dont know how we the angling community can thank you for the incredible content. The amount of information being provided right now is just incredible. I will say thank you. We the people should be very grateful that we have You, King Kelly and Russ. The 3 wise men of big fish angling thank you all.
@alexlafkasfishing Those of us that know and our curious enough to get better will not get tired of you. I'm telling everyone I know and cares about streamers and trout to suscribe. Question about your tails. Early in the year you really showed in your patterns deceiver tails. I noticed your tails in this video are rabbit. I know you have reason. Love to see content on your theories on the tails. Thanks again for your insights.
@mttrout1969 I mix it up. Been doing a bunch of rabbit and marabou. I think I do it more when I'm in the Leech/lamprey mode. I notice I do it a lot on those type patterns and more feathers on baitfish stuff
I watch for your new videos and learn a ton, then go back to them and pick up even more. Your on-river time and after-comments are great teaching methods. So much on so many levels, and better than standalone videos or a book, though you could turn a lot of this into one. Thanks, and please keep it up!
Every day you post a streamer video is a great day, Alex! Especially if it’s with Russ. I can’t get enough. I really hope you post a bunch while you’re on the White this winter. I know you said you’re not sure if you can get it done. Maybe just upload everything without editing? I love the hours long unedited videos that Ellis Ward puts out. Let me know if you have open days in Arkansas. I should really get out with you.
That's good to hear. It sounds like a buddy I guide with is willing to do little filming with me, so that issue might b solved. My schedule was full but one of the groups might be falling apart. If it does, I'll figure out a way to let people know
@ have you by chance seen the ZipStick by Drop Jaw Flies? Seems like the closest fly to a jerkbait. ua-cam.com/video/4pIE2WWUd2k/v-deo.htmlsi=EHa3cURyeR3ynrhk
Winter streamer dreaming is such a fun time. Probably my favorite time frame. Hard to beat having the rivers to yourself and chucking into the sludge water. They usually eat the fly like it’s their last meal too.
Great watching you and Russ!! No net!! That's me!! I forget the net or my wading staff almost every time!!😂 I become a bridge troll this time of year, 100 feet from the truck . Thanks
Alex is awesome! I had never taken a guide trip and a few weeks ago a buddy setup a trip with Alex. Such a fun trip. Very knowledgeable and funny. Not sure if he even needs more clients but definitely worth doing a trip with him if you can. I’m sure Russ would be fun to fish with too. Great videos!
awesome video al, as excited as I am to see ur Arkansas adventures, its videos like this that get me excited to go streamer fishing in the winter in NY. Looking forward to some jig fly, tying videos 🤙
Keep it coming! For us landlocked fellas you’re truly educating and helping us learn so much faster. The only reason Russ hooked the 24”er was because you forgot the net! Not bashing Russ, being objective- prior to the fish getting off should he had changed rod angles? Appears he was high sticking some, if he had a lower side angle pressure would that have helped. Love the videos- thanks for the effort and time it takes to make them. Cheers
Appreciate it Jim! I'd say in most situations you are correct but without the net, the only play is to grab to line and rope him in. I think every angler would agree that when you lose a fish there's always something you think you should have done differently
It's interesting, only in the last three years I've learned that big stripers (talkin 40 - 46 inches) on the Northeast Coast will winter over in (often shallow) relatively small salt ponds and "dig" out eels that are wintering over in the mud. You'll sometimes even see their tails in the air as they do this! They're here BECAUSE of the eels, and herring too. Makes sense that trout would do something like this with frogs. Salt fish are like freshwater fish and visa versa. You guys taught me something AGAIN! Thanks! I learned about this special winter saltpond fishing from a young master fisherman named Alex Peru, who designed the famous False Albacore soft plastic, the Albie Snack.
Another fun and educational video Alex; curious what you tend to run for leech patterns; I always feel like I over-dress even sparse flies, but maybe some good content there to be shared in a video, just a thought - keep'em comin!
Thanks man I've got a video to get up that I shot the other day of a simple Leech pattern I like. Basically just a 2 hook bugger. I go over the reasons I tied it the way I did in the video
Great video. Real time tactics and real situation makes it more relevant. These fly out videos with 24 in New Zealand fish just Mae it seem un attainable lol
That's true for 99% of people and most of the hard-core anglers. Most of us never make enough cause we are too busy fishing. In addition, we've got some really cool stuff to do all over this country and even within a days drive
Hey Alex, thanks for putting these videos out, super informative! Any recommendations for getting to fish in slightly deeper rivers? Home river out east is 8-12 ish feet deep on average (frog water), where they have majority carnivorous diets, even the small ones. Just have a lot of water to work with is the "issue". Curious to here your approach, thanks again!
That gets tricky. Floating lines with long leaders might be the ticket. Stack mend weighted flies on upstream casts and jig deep. If u are looking for a sink tip, the airflow streamer max falls like a hammer.
Brutal not having the net on the biggest brown on the channel to date! At least it wasn’t the fish of a lifetime for you guys and it was shrugged off with a good attitude. Huge tip for winter streamer fishing with the muck food sources. When you talk about fishing the muck, are you throwing to stuff with some depth, or to the stuff that is shallow and has 6”-12” of water depth? Thanks as always and huge fan of the channel!
I knew it was gonna cost us before the boat hit the water, all we could do is laugh. Yeah, we're casting into a lot of 6 to 12in water. That's where the type 3 or bead chain eyes come in handy
Alex - Nolan here. We’ve fished together before. What fly line ya using when throwing leeches? Striper? Soon to be released SA sink 3? I fish pocket water in PM a lot and been thinking of trying floating line even. Any advice would be appreciated. Hope to fish with you again soon. Thanks.
I would not be afraid of a floater. A lot of times I feel like the striper ot type 3 is better when covering vast areas. If I were to be picking at smaller spots I'd probably use a floater so I could manipulate the line to keep the fly where I want it longer

Thanks Alex for taking us along! Good banter, good attitudes and good fun! Happy Holidays to you and yours, stay well and stay warm!
Thank you! I'm still at it but we've got a couple more days of freeze coming up. It'll give me a couple days to get some stuff edited and ready to go
You guys make a good fish catching team.
Master casting and master oarsmen. Got it done!
Appreciate it! Next time, he's gonna row for a bit
@ yeah, put Russ at the oars and we can see your casting prowess.

@zachpinnell1498 I hadn't seen that. I'd say it is close
@ $50 a pop. Might be time I get a vise.
@zachpinnell1498 you're better off buying 5 or 6, it'll still b cheaper

Stupid mistake. My raft was all taken apart for the winter and a few things didn't make it back in as I built it back up

Thanks man! Definitely a good time,we even caught some fish
I’ll never forget meeting this guy while he was chumming steelies on the Boardman.
That's been years! I believe that was about 3 marriages ago between russ and I
Look at the bend in that glass pole!!! 🔥💪🏼💯
It's unreal. Damn fiber noodle

I'm ready to be there. Got another month of snow and winter but I should be able to get some filming done between trips while I'm there
9:06 looked like a hammer! 😮
Oh it was
Lol 😂! Thanks for the great video 🌄 ! Start my day!
Glad you liked it!

I'll be damned. That sounds like a fun way to target them Mark
Thanks for all the tips Alex. I’m just starting to get into fly fishing and any information helps.

Can you tell me the specific jig hooks you like for that application. Say 3 to 5 inch streamer range. And do you use the lead wire on the shaft?
I've been using the 90 degree jig hook by gamakatsu. The 3/0 seems about right to me. Big enough but still light gage
Thanks.

Big fun! What rod is Russ using? Looks like echo Bad Ass Glass
Might be that or one he had custom wrapped
Russ using a Bad Ass Glass??
Might have been. Or an nfc blank he had wrapped
Do you know what the water temp was? And at what temp do you see the fish slow down and become less likely to chase a streamer?
You kind of answered in the commentary at the end! Cool video thanks.
I've caught them as low as 33 but upper 30s definitely seem to be more productive
