None of this is Japanese Jujutsu. Japanese jujutsu is a weapons based/weapons retention art. But, I agree that it can benefit from modern training pedology. However, 99% of what people this think Japanese jujutsu is, is just goshinjutsu which is a self defense art. This video is a good example of goshinjutsu. Nothing wrong with that, just not Japanese jujutsu.

@@gemappraiser I actually like this comment, though this series of videos was precisely made for this purpouse; there's no "real japanese ju jitsu" the standards of what it would need to be are impossible to hold, for instance the whole addition of the typical gi comes from judo, that's also very modern, so even from only that example at the end of it all that we have is the technique... which is universal across the globe, fighting is fighting

    • @gemappraiser

@@martialgeeks there’s plenty of real JJ. Albeit, the training methodology needs an update. You have to realize too that Japanese jujutsu kata teaches principles, not fighting techniques all the time. The kata is meant to be applied with resistance and a non working opponent. Kata/waza are one method within the framework. Even in judo and BJJ there is “kata” against a non resisting opponent. Then tested which helps you learn how to adapt under stress. The military use kata all the time. It’s meant to teach muscle memory, discipline and technique. I’m a Japanese jujutsu practitioner with 35 years experience. Plenty of that in judo/bjj. The depth of authentic jj can teach you for a lifetime

@@martialgeeks You can search for kokodo jujutsu, Hakko denshin ryu. They’re derivatives of Hakko Ryu which is a derivative of Daito Ryu. All are authentic Japanese jujutsu. One of the Hakko denshin Ryu jujutsu seniors is also a BJJ black belt as well are many others. It all “works” if you know how to make it work. BJJ, judo, Japanese jujutsu are all the same principle wise. Just a different training methodology and strategy

I have some experience with Daito Ryu, I also do aikido so I agree there is real functiom when in comes to those depending on the context etc. I'll deffinitely check the other ones out, though, aren't those still different schools/branches? still not unified as a single art. So really jjj to me is a label that describes a jujitsu from/in japan, not a unified art easily distinct like bjj, judo, aikido, karate etc.

Tremendous video. Interesting point about the hesitant/mini tap tap at 9:57... it has to do with the mentality of good sportsmanship/ Jita-Kyoei... these taps happen all the time in practice. Often times the competitive winner abandons that mentality and adopts an all together different mentality - break, crush, and kill.

Good tai chi is science. Its a shame there are fakes and frauds but the same can be said in any business . There is good and bad in everything, positive and negative, for me that means accepting and just focusing on myself rather than others . That old saying, we can lead a horse to water but we can't make it drink . People that are that way inclined will be followers, there is alot of people like it hence religions have done so well . Another strength of tai chi is its a well needed alternative to abrahamic religion .

Chi, as I understand it with 10+ years of Taichi training, is overrated and overemphasized. It's just a teaching tool, in classics they simply say "the Mind leads the Chi, the Chi leads the body". That's pretty much all that is said about the Chi. Not enough intent and you'll lack power, too much and you'll waste energy. A good body and mind coordination will make the technique seem effortless. I think any experienced martial artist know what it feels, when everything (positoning, timing, intent, energy) aligns perfectly and you get an spectacular effect on the partner. Nothing more complicated or woowoo than that.

Something I've always found interesting about the whole Chi/Ki discussion is how so many people seem to have the "objective, fact-based" view on it, yet it seems like no one has deep-dived the history of the concept. I have a video in some state of completion somewhere where I go into autistic detail on it. I think the reason I shelved the premise was mostly because the whole thing could be boiled down to "Chi means whatever it needs to mean in a given place or time." I think it was around 2020 when I picked up a book called "A Study of Qi: In Classical Texts" by Elisabeth Rochat de la Vallée. Even in ancient times, the meaning changed drastically. There are a few other articles around the Internet, too. Lance Gatling has one called "Ki 気 in Jūdō 柔道- Uchida Ryōhei and the Secrets of Budō 武道極意" on his Kano Chronicles blog. I'm sure Sangenkai Blog, Aikido Journal, and Guillaume Erard blog all have stuff on Ki and Aiki in its relationship to Aikido and Daito-ryu. Beyond that, the blog "Kung Fu Tea" is a pretty excellent academic-adjacent resource for the Chinese Martial Arts and I'd wager it also has stuff on Qi. The WordPress site Brennan Translation is also a repository for many, many Chinese Martial Arts classics translated into simple English--of course, complete with mentions of Qi. Including the first book, this crash course in Qi would cost most people a whopping 12-15 USD assuming "A Study of Qi" is available for you. If you omit that book, all this is completely free (assuming Internet access). The painful reality is that most people just either don't know how to do due diligence on these ideas or--if we are going to be more cynical--really don't want to. Not to mention this is the tip of the iceberg, I can only imagine how much more study opens up with command of Japanese and Chinese languages. For what its worth, I do think that Qi/Ki are a "real thing," but what they mean is extremely dependent on the specific context. Through all my reading its only been very modern practitioners that suggest its a woo-woo superpower. It seems to me that most practitioners in the past were discussing a very real, observable physical phenomenon, which they were just describing in shorthand. Sometimes this is as mundance as twisting at the hips or something. Unfortunately, the term now is mostly used by people who seem to be looking for religion rather than martial competence. And I don't mean that insultingly, either. If people want to incorporate this stuff into some kind of new age faith and they aren't harming anyone--power to them. But using this term in a way that requires so much raw belief and so little evidence while selling it as a genuine martial tool is con-artistry at its apex. I suspect that eventually Qi/Ki was used to deliberately hide concepts in the 20th century. I think it probably refers to different things depending on the system you are practicing. But, speaking more frankly, in 2025 I don't think there is any reason a teacher shouldn't be able to explain what it is in their system in plain English. Its the information age--no secret stays secret for long. If your teacher can't, that is a problem in my mind. It either means they don't understand their own system or they are deliberately keeping the term "mystical" so it can mean whatever it needs to in order to sell a product. Qi/Ki is genuinely an interesting rabbit hole I'd suggest any practitioner go down at some point. But I've never found any conclusive evidence in the historical record or in my training to suggest it a "secret sauce." It's still worth knowing about, though, so you can ask good questions when the term comes up. As an aside, the concept of Qi used to mostly describe phenomenon in the physical word, namely through Daoist cosmology. While Daoism's proposed architecture for reality is obviously dated today, a serious study of Qi will reveal how freakishly far ahead of its time it was. Daoism was proposing things eerily close to atoms and dark matter and the like as far back as the 6th century BC. That has little to do with martial arts, but a bit wild to think about.
