Hi, welcome to Alice and the Giant Bookshelf! I'm Alice and this is a channel all about my love for books. I am a self-confessed book hoarder and currently have over 150 unread books to get through! Join me to find out how I get on in my quest to read them all. Posting videos about books and other bookish things, usually twice weekly!
Another Library Haul and Book Haul! (My Poor TBR!) #booktube
Hi everyone,
Today’s video is a mixture of book haul and library book haul. I filmed this two weeks ago, and I've unfortunately not been well for the past week which has stopped me from editing it until now. I don't know how soon there will be more videos, I have one book review that needs editing but after that I will need to film more so I'm hoping I can get back to that soon. Thanks for sticking around and supporting my channel in the meantime.
As a disclaimer to this video, I have been sent more books since as gifts and I've not managed to get much read at all over the past week so these all remain unread.
Thanks for watching, i'd love to hear from you in the comments, have you bought any books recently, or got anything exciting from the library? If you've read any of these, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Big thanks to @ReadBecca for recommending me a book in her recent video, you can check that out here: ua-cam.com/video/oYwbu5sxiM0/v-deo.htmlsi=UxNBbKp8pWwU22nl - I can't wait to read the book I was recommended.
Thanks to @BloomsburyPublishing for the proof copy of Briefly Very Beautiful.
The Women’s Prize Plodalong is hosted by Me, @GemofBooks and @CharlieBrookReads
Next live show: Sunday 9th June 4pm BST.

Bad Luck and Trouble by Lee Child vs Reacher Season 2 | Book vs TV Review and Comparison #booktube
i m italian and i really like your video. but u forgot to tell about the "era" :D i read sherlock books since when i was a child (i read my first book when i was 8) and this passion lead me to know all about victorian era, and read books about it. a really important thing about sherlock for me is the atmosphere, i really like it, the streets in the victorian era, the cab, candles and not electricty, the delivery men who delivery the mail several times a day, detectives who could get informations by people (and not by web :D ) ecc... all this things for me contribute to love conan doyle's novels even more. anyway i love this video, it s so infromative to people who really don't know the characther
I concur with "5 Little Pigs" at #1. I feel like "Peril at End House" and "Dead Man's Folly" are Top10
For some reason I keep thinking that Poirot is in Sparkling Cyanide (aka Remembered Death) -- I'll have to go check. I think of him as discussing what really happened in the part where everyone is drinking wine and dancing -- but maybe I'm imagining things!
Another one that I'm fond of is Mrs. McGinty's Dead. Great atmosphere with Poirot at a boardinghouse and of course Mrs. Oliver. It also has that "murders in the past" theme, even though the murder(s) in the book take place in the present.
I just finished this book and I agree the plot was too convoluted. Though the reader is presented with all the clues and suspects, I feel it was honestly impossible for anyone to solve all the twists (at least I couldn't).
I love your videos-they’re always so straight to the point, and I really enjoy your recommendations. I’m a big fan of audiobooks and love Jack Reacher, but I also really enjoy courtroom thrillers. I’ve loved The Lincoln Lawyer and Presumed Innocent, and I was wondering if you could do a video recommending more books in this genre? I’d love to hear your thoughts on similar legal thrillers or courtroom dramas. Thanks for the great content!😊
Which is your favourite reacher novel?
Keep up the good work.
Though this novel hails from the 1930s and times have changed, there are several things which do not ring true at all with me,though the audiobook is actually worth listening to,despite average narration. Without giving anything much away,I find it incredulous that the police could place all the surviving guests under house arrest for an indeterminate period of time and they all simply accept it without any complaints like it's an every day occurrence. Most, but not all, were family members and some did reside there full time but some of those who didn't,especially those with kids, would never have agreed to remain under the same roof as a possible murderer, regardless of what the cops might have wanted in making life easier for themselves. Even back then, the police had no powers to enforce such a draconian measure. The attitude of the leading detective was generally appalling and someone even a saint would have happily punched in the kisser and having the Chief Constable so heavily involved in the investigation is also pretty hard to believe, despite being familiar with the family. Also, having the police to persuade certain of the adult guests to agree to compile an essay on events leading up to the murder, like some naughty kids having to do lines in detention also seems ludicrously unlikely. Two words the first beginning with f would have been most people's response, You would have all on enticing any of the kids to do it let alone supposedly intelligent adults. The snowy scene on the cover drawing is also misleading as there is not a flake of snow to be seen, despite the xmas setting. Indeed,it might just as easily have taken place at the height of summer. These are just some highlights of the obvious flaws within a story who's characters are all pretty abstract and anonymous to say the least and in truth, nobody would really have given a damn had they all been murdered. That said, this story is okay to a point but it lacks any real tension or drama.5/10 means it is run of the mill at best and will satisfy some but not others.
I am an Ann Patchett fan through Commonwealth and Bel Canto. Then I tried to read Dutch House but couldn’t get into it. I read Tom Lake paperback but didn’t love it. I think I was distanced from it by not knowing anything about Our Town and I didn’t like the overly sweet mother/ daughters relationship. It’s been compared to Little Women and I guess that’s what you mean by positivity?
This is a great list! I would add one note to Murder on the Orient Express, and that would be--for a first time read--make this one of the later books. I don't want to say too much re why (major spoiler involved), but the way Poirot emotionally *feels* about the solution (and more importantly, the denouement) is a HUGE development in his overall character. This is especially important for a reader, since each of the adaptations I've seen of it (Albert Finney, David Suchet, and *sigh* Kenneth Brannagh 🙄) completely flip Poirot's emotional state at that point. So no, we don't get to know Poirot in this book--because MotOE assumes we already have an understanding of his personal moral compass. It boggled my mind that even the David Suchet version of this made such a huge departure on such an important point.
I feel sad to hear Alice passed away😭😭. May she rest in peace. What a vibrant and positive vibe she had!!!!!! Love from India❤ The world lost a Gem.
💜💜💜💜💜💜💜📚 Just started reading Sherlock Holmes, you of course are in my thoughts Alice Love and prayers to your family and friends 💜📚
I'm so sorry to hear about Alice. What a shock. I really liked Alice's videos. She had a lovely way with her, and I so much enjoyed listening to her thoughts and opinions about such a range of books. She seemed delightful - always with a smile, always good-humoured, and always someone with whom you wanted to spend some time. My thoughts are with her husband, family and friends.
Tom cruise put the reacher franchise on the map
I watched the first two seasons of Reacher in amazon prime and I want to read the books should I start with Killing floor or skip it because it is the adaptation of the first season?
💜📚
👁️👁️👮🏻👮🏻♀️🕵🏼🕵🏼 I recently finished the Shardlake series by C.J. Sansom and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was working very long hours on my feet so I devoured them via audiobook. I’m very late to your channel and I’m glad we still have access to your videos. Thank you for all you shared with the book tube community. ❤
I ask myself this question so often! I always make TBRs but I don't stick to them as much as I'd like to. xD I think my TBRs help me to prioritize the books I really want to read, so they do seem to have a purpose after all. 🤣
You've gotta be kidding me! 5 little pigs for number 1?! You think this is better than the murder of Roger Akroyd?? Come on
I found you to late i had just watch some shortch before. I started to be interested in your wlogg but you died soon after. I wish I had watched you sooner. But you will always live on your channel
I'm nearly finishing the book after watching the first season. Can't say it's my cup of tea... Maybe because i knew the plot already and wanted to just run through it. Also i don't like the writing style much (battle at the house with the pool is better in the book!) Writing like "It was 12 o'clock. She opened the cupboard, picked up something. Couldn't stop admiring her. She turned around and headed for the kitchen. Lights were on. The table had..." Mooove on! Just progress it already. I don't want to known about your date in detail or the furniture.
Try reading Naomi Wolf's 'The Bodies of Others' and 'Facing the Beast' for the other side of the story of these recent events. Though I loved Naomi Klein's 'Shock Doctrine', she's gone astray with this book, largely as a result of her family ties to the pharmaceutical industry.
I thoroughly enjoyed both novels and just like you, I think I liked the second one even more than the first! For the same reasons - reminded me of what I liked about Murder on the Orient-Express and it feels like the story was developed a little better in the sequel. I cannot wait for the third installment to be published in October - it's my most anticipated release of the year.
RIP Alice. You are missed
