    It's horrible doing this trip on the coast unless you live in Bicheno, Bicheno has one bus going south and one going north per day If you live north of Bicheno and you want to go south, you have to go all the way to Launceston and head back, if you live somewhere like Swansea you have to go all the way south and take the bus mentioned in this video north, it's a shame there isn't more bus services on the coast, not every 10 min like in the city but maybe 3-4 busses rather than 1-2 depending on time of year (but that's not economically viable I'm sure)

    Wonderful! I've been looking forward to your next video in your series. It's because of your earlier video's that I've proposed my own bus oriented itinerary in April when I visit Tasmania from Victoria which will be oriented towards the east coast...the west coast and west of Devonport will be for another holiday. The 50% fare reduction and the 50% off the 50% fare reduction for Seniors makes travelling by bus a no-brainer. 👍

      Thanks for that. So pleasing that you will come over and do your own bus journey. I should get another UA-cam out on Coles Bay before April. Just take care with transfers. Ring up the bus companies or talk to the drivers to check and confirm. The 75% discount for Concession travellers is great. I have travelled even more during the discount period and have decided to release UA-cams to let folks know about the fares. Finally yes do plan to do our West Coast. A combined Stanley West Coast trip would work well. My own word of caution is the West Coast weather can be wet most times of the year so try and get accommodation close to the bus stops Cheers Pete

      Excellent. I have not caught that service from Bicheno just the other way from St Marys to Bicheno about 4 times. Coming up from Hobart to Bicheno there is a late arrival at 7pm and a little rushed. Doing the return Journey from St Marys would be a lot of fun. Cheers Pete

      @tasmanianbusjourneys9406 6 днів тому

      Thank you very much for your comment about our channel. There is certainly a lot of good stories about Redline. I use to know the former owner but I have no plans at the moment to do any. I have tended to move away from doing historical UA-cams as they are hard to do and not that popular but I can definitely be encouraged to do some. I hope to do a UA-cam about trolley buses and a UA-cam on what it was like to travel by train in 1937. There is certainly a lot public transport related material in Tasmania that would make interesting UA-cams. Thanks again Cheers Pete

    as a west tamar local, its nice to see people actually using our buses. im one of very few people who use the buses fairly regularly. you have been a big inspiration for creating content about tasmanian transport and buses.

    • @tasmanianbusjourneys9406
      @tasmanianbusjourneys9406 16 днів тому

      Thanks and it is great you are using those West Tamar buses. I always felt that the services and towns are similar in style to the Huon Valley although less population one of the thing that suprises me is the relatively lower patronage in what is a fantastic part of Tasmania. The views of the UA-cam on West Tamar are on the lower side as well but personally I cant wait until I am up there again riding about. Cheers Pete

    thanks for sharing this with the world pete! its nice that there is at least some amount of regional public transport left in our state. let's hope that at some point passenger rail returns to this state. i also hope that we get some proper bus terminals soon, the closure of cornwall square in launceston was just criminal

    • @tasmanianbusjourneys9406
      @tasmanianbusjourneys9406 22 дні тому

      Thanks. It is very important preserve the regional tranport we do have and that is perhaps the key aim of the channel is to encourage use of public tranport. It is barely adequate as it is. Removal of facilities can be justifed perhaps as long as services are maintained and improved. Regretfully there is only support for new ferry services which themselves are hard to access by most Tasmanians. I dont see much chance of train services returning, nice that they are. Thanks for yoir support encourage folks to use public transport when they can cheers Pete

      Yeah what fun bus ride, accom at a good country style motel and an after hours wander around bits of Port Arthur. We also just discovered the west coast heritage centre in Zeehan which is pretty awesome as well and both sites will feature on our forthcoming top 12 icons of Tas UA-cam.

  • @plugger350
    @plugger350 2 місяці тому

    Excellent video! Well done Kitty and great analysis by Peter. Hong Kong has one of the highest population densities in the world (around 7000 people sq. km) and a relatively low labour cost. Tasmania is a low density, high labour cost location with a car centric population but we, as pointed out, aren't helping ourselves with a one-size-fits-all rigid and inflexible public transport system. Maybe petrol prices have to spike before we get our act together?

    • @tasmanianbusjourneys9406
      @tasmanianbusjourneys9406 Місяць тому

      Thanks Plugger. Your observations are spot on. I don't know what has to happen for us to get a proper public transport system. Road congestion, the high cost of motoring both personal and societal will force the issue. I do hope our politicians will start to value public transport. With only about 3% of Tasmanian's using public transport, iI guess there are not many votes in it. Cheers Pete

    Great series and has highlighted some places I need to revisit. Richmond's old convict gaol is great to visit - better than Port Arthur. In New Norfolk foodies will love the Artisan Kitchen. They have high class degustation dining but they also have a great casual cafe which is delicious and affordable AND do tours of their big garden where they produce their veges onsite, including a range of mushrooms.

    We voyaged over on the day ferry 2.5 years ago. Arriving at Devonport at 21:00 there was a taxi available to take us into town. However as I'm tight with funds and it was a cool but pleasant evening we took to Shank's pony and walked for around 45 mins to the hotel next to McDonalds. My partner wasn't impressed but I'm loathe to get taxi's and apparently the town bus service would have already ceased for the day. Thanks indeed for the info for my next trip.

    Thanks for this invaluable information on PT in Tasmania. On the mainland we've become environmentally conscious and now only drive our small car when absolutely necessary, preferring to take PT or ride our bikes every time. We will be using your info to form our next holiday in Tassie starting at the end of November 2024. Edited to add: that a suggestion from Tasmania Without a Car, FB page set me on to your channel. Living in regional Victoria and loving a cool climate AND having now retired, I'll be very pleased to travel around Tassie utilising your suggestions. Now...let's hope they get this ferry business sorted out.

      Thanks for your message. It makes little sense to drive when there is an alternative avaliable. Tasmanian buses are not that frequent but they go consistently 365 days a year. It is important that they are used and that is one of the aims of our channel to have more passengers on Tasmanian buses. Enjoy your bus Journeys Pete

    Great video series as always! When time and funds permit it would be interesting to try some of the Area Connect routes. Also the Barge from Bridport to Flinders Island would make interesting viewing....not a bus but definitely an interesting mode of transport!

    • @tasmanianbusjourneys9406
      @tasmanianbusjourneys9406 4 місяці тому

      Thanks Joel very good suggestions. As time goes on the Area Connect services which started as trial services do seem to be more established bus services and attract the half priced fares. As such they would be worth exploring but given they most operate only weekly and start out in regional areas it is almost impossible to make day trips or even overnight bus Journeys on such services. But I am tempted particularly by the Hobart to Queenstown service which I have attempted to video once but failed due to snow. The other option is to get to Westaway with a two night stay. The former we plan to do in the next two months and cover perhaps more or the west coast with both Strahan and Zeehan appealing destinations. The Bridport to Flinders ferry is on our radar. Very keen. The only problem is that the ferry leaves and arrives Bridport on the high tide which may means up to an extra two nights Bridport. But Bridport is a fun destination and the attempt to connect to the ferry would make for a great UA-cam. Thanks for your support cheers Pete.

      Hey Brett Good Point and something I am pondering about. Lots of viewers do like the suspense of the countdown which would be diminished if I put in the town info. Those with favourite towns can easily look at my other UA-cams about journeys and towns where there is much more detail. There is also that element who get crabby if the town does not make the list and wont watch any of it ? Having said all that there probably is good scope once the excitement has dies down to either provide full information or provide a combined parts 1 and 2 edition which does have full chapter info. cheers Pete

After failing in my attempt to write a book about it all I have found pleasure in doing these UA-cams. In terms of Tassie travel we find it a good mix to use buses with car use depending where you go and what you want to see. The elevated views from a bus, good bus driving and mostly lovely fellow travelers make busing fun and at least currently, highly economical on half priced concession fares. Cheers Pete

An possible alternative for you is to fly to Launceston airport which attracts much cheaper fares than the previous two and then it is pretty simple to travel by bus from Launceston to Burnie, the departure point for the bus service to Queenstown. Catch the route 705 InterCity from Launceston and then it is an easy transfer to the Route 708 North West express to Burnie. Fares are $14 full adult or $7 concession. Just a thought Pete

    Thanks again for such a useful video for bus transportation which makes it possible for me to travel in Tasmania. After watching your video, I would like to take a bus from Hobart to Sweasea, and to Bicheno and then to Coles Bay, but since there is only one bus in the evening, so I guess I have no choice, but have to stay overnights in each mentioned places due to bus limitation, so I may need to stay for at least 4 days for those rotes. From Coles Bay to Launceston, do i understand correctly that I have to catch a Bus 744 from Coles Bay at 7:10 am to St. Marys at 8:40 am, then change to Bus 740 at 9:10 am there to arrive in Launceston at 11 am right? Do these buses usually reliable as there is only 1 time and if i miss it, i will be in trouble? Thanks

      Thanks for such a good question and pleasing you are considering travelling in response to our UA-cams at Tasmanian Bus Journeys. I have yet to do a UA-cam on Coles Bay but will do so in about 2 months time. Your proposed journey is a good one. Catching Tassielink is no problem and drivers are very good. I suggest you do both on Tassielink 1300300520 as for Natalie and especially important to book on Callows if you are transferring services 0400570036. callows drivers are pretty good as well. Just confirming then you should catch the 737 @ 16:00 from Hobart to Swansea or the earlier 736 service if you prefer. Next day catch the 737 @ 18:15 at Swansea for Bicheno Transfer onto the 745 @ 19:05 at Bicheno. Overnight at Coles bay. Next day catch the 744 @ 7:10 to St Marys transfer onto the 740 @ 8:55 at St Marys then either go to Launceston or if you want to go back to Hobart get off at Epping Forest at 10:05 and catch the InterCity route 702 @ 10:20 at Epping Forest back in Hobart at 12:35. Just two nights away.. If you connecting to Kinetic IntercIty service at Epping Forest you must book on line or 130036000. I have not done this trip in that order but all the drivers are good and the transfers do work. Other than talking to the bus operators over the phone I would also let every driver know what you are doing. So in the uncommon situation something is running late the drivers can talk to each other. And while the transfers are pretty easy at Bicheno and Epping Forest I believe the driver of the 744 service from Coles bay may drop you off opposite the St Marys pub and you have to cross the road to the bus stop next to the pub to catch the 740 bound for Launceston. Do talk to the driver and tell him/her what you are doing. The bus stops at St Marys are old are not clearly marked for correct departures. At least when I last looked a year ago. If I were you I would be tempted to change your journey. I would travel to Swansea as planned and then to Bicheno but overnight there. The next morning I would catch the route 743 from bicheno at 6:40 and that same will become the 744 which will depart Coles Bay at 7:10 travels through St Marys to St Helens and you could overnight there and catch the 740 service next morning @ 8:15 bound for Launceston. The benefits of this approach is that you minimise transfers and staying at Bicheno overnight is usually a lot cheaper than Coles bay. And while you just experience an out and back journey to Coles Bay you would experience the fantastic run 740 from Coles Bay to St Helens and then have a good chance to look around there. Just a thought. I better stop. get back to me with any further questions. Cheers Pete

      @@tasmanianbusjourneys9406 Hi Pete, Thank you very much for your suggestion. It is an excellent suggestion to stay at St. Helen which I have never thought about it. I will follow that. It seems that this is the closest bus stop close to Bay of Fires right? I must say that your video is extremely useful for me as I almost gave up on coming to Tasmania due to Bus limitations, but after watching your bus video with useful information, it has made my trip possible, so if you do the Coles Bay video in the next 2 months, it will be great to me too as I am planning to go in April next year. In the meantime, I am trying to work out the day trip from Bicheno to Coles Bay as I also find accommodation at Coles Bay is very expensive compared to Bicheno as you said, but I would like to hike at Freycinet National Park & Wineglass Bay & Hazards Beach Circuit. According to the bus timetable, I can take Bus 743 from Bicheno at 6:35 am, arriving in Coles Bay at 7:10 am, but on the way back if I travel on weekdays, Bus 745 at 4:30 pm from Coles Bay, it has a sign ”S” which operates only school days, so if I travel when the schools are closed or school holiday, meaning I can’t return at Bicheno on the same day unless I go on Saturday and could return with Bus 743 at 7:35 pm, is my understanding correct?

      Hi again. yes the St Helens bus stop is the closest one to the Bay of Fires. It is 25km away. There is no regular bus service there and there may be tours you can take ? Certainly worth a visit but St Helens itself is pleasant. I have to wait till daylight savings starts in October before completing this latest series of How to Travel to. With the evening arrival of services both on the East and West coast videoing can be problematic. I have almost zero footage of Coles Bay so I am unable to re use older footage. Forthcoming videos will be how to travel to Coles Bay, Bicheno and St Helens. While April is normally ok for travel in Tasmania, especially early April, I would recommend you travel during our daylight savings period up to March. If you can. If on a bus you can just see so much more. I would travel during school terms as there are more services and yes you can do a day trip to Coles bay on any weekday as well as the Saturday, I would definitely go on that hike on the Hazards circuit. It is sensational !!! But yes your only day option during school holidays without an overnight stay in Coles bay, appears to be on the Saturday. I think you could still have a good journey. With overnights Swansea on a Thursday Bicheno Friday and Saturday nights. (Coles Bay day trip Saturday) then depart Bicheno on a Sunday at 15:30 arrive St Marys at 16:10. You could wait at St Marys (the pub serves a very good dinner) until 20:50 and catch a very late bus from St Marys to St Helens or overnight at St Marys an enchanting town, catching the 744 from St Mary next day a Monday at 8:40. In summary, if you can, go during Tasmanian school term 8 February - 12 April You can certainly ask me further questions quite ok. cheers Pete

      @@tasmanianbusjourneys9406 Hi Pete, many thanks for your suggestions. Earlier I used to think of going in March, but I was told that it is still very hot, isn’t it? But after seeing bus timetable issue and with your daylight saving suggestion, I am now reconsidering to change back to March. What time is an average sunset in March or April? As for Hazards Circuit and Wineglass Bay hiking, how long does it take and if I base in Bicheno, I should have enough time for these hiking routes in one day right? How about the following plans: - Tuesday: arriving in Hobart - Wed: Take Bus from Hobart to Mt. Wellington, staying in Hobart - Thursday: Take Bus 736 ($9.6) from Hobart at 2:30 pm from to Swansea at 4:45 pm, staying in Swansea - Friday: Take Bus 737 ($3.6) from Swansea at 6:15 pm to Bicheno (Information Center) at 6:55 pm, staying in Bicheno - Saturday: Take Bus 743 ($2.1) from Bicheno at 6:35 am to Coles Bay at 7:10 am (a day trip from Bicheno) for Wineglass Bay/ Hazards Beach Circuit. On the return, take Bus 743 from Coles Bay at 7:35 pm to Bicheno at 8:10 pm, staying in Bicheno - Sunday: Spend a relaxing time in Bicheno or find some hiking routes, staying in Bicheno - Monday: Take Bus 744($5.1) from Bicheno at 7:10 am to St. Helen at 9:20 am, staying at St. Helen - Tuesday: Take Bus 740 ($14.4) from St. Helen at 8:15 am to Launceston at10:45 am (visit Cataract Gorge), staying in Launceston - Wed: Cradle Mountain Day Tour or shuttle transfer to Cradle Mountain, Launceston or Cradle Mountain? - Thursday: Launceston or Cradle Mountain? - Friday: Take a Bus 702 ($16.8) from Launceston at 9:45 am to Hobart at 12:35 pm - Sat: Salamanca Market in Hobart - Sunday: Hobart - Sydney (to visit Sydney for 3 days) Please note that I am still finding information if I should take Cradle Mountain Day Tour or shuttle transfer to Cradle Mountain, but with the latter option it is very expensive option for both the shuttle transfer and accommodation in Cradle Mountain. I would appreciate your advice on my draft itinerary on the bus routes before I buy a ticket. I think it will fly to and from Hobart as there are Skybus from the airport and more flights options than Launceston and now no shuttle bus between Launceston Airport to the city. Thanks.

      Hi again thanks for your reply. and apologies for my slow response. The UA-cam studio system did not direct me it. Here goes March is not hot in Tasmania, usually. It is probably our best month for travel. Dry and warm with daylight saving. Sunset around 7pm in march one hour earlier in April, with no daylight savings I have done the hazards walking circuit. Quite doable in a full day. Your itenaries sounds great. Well thought out. I did not check the bus fares but timetables and links are spot on. Fly to Hobart is the best option. Quick comments If going to Mt Wellington you may consider a metropolitan bus to Fern Tree and then walking up and catching a Mt Wellington bus back OR doing it the other way around. Fern Tree buses usually go on an hourly basis. It is best to go to the east Coast during daylight savings time. Especially to see that East Coast scenery on the bus. Cataract George is a must see in Launceston. Other options for you would be a quick trip up the West Tamar by bus. They run every two hours. Cradle mountain is a great destination, very popular and usually quite expensive. Depending on how keen you are about Cradle I would consider catching the Intercity to to Devonport and then exploring the North West Coast on the North West Express route 708. The North West has wonderful coastal scenery and walks as well really nice towns - small cities. Finally back in Hobart I would be tempted not spend too long at Salamanca. It is pretty commercial and has gone downhill in recent years. Perhaps spend 3 hours there from 8am and if you have had enough of it go down to the Huon Valley by the depart 11:15 bus. Great scenery and short walks in Geevston or Franklin. An alternative would be to go to Richmond on the 12:15 bus. A great historic village. I have done UA-cams on these places. Apologies again for the slow reply. Your trip sounds very worthwhile Cheers Pete

    • @tasmanianbusjourneys9406

      Hi, an interesting problem. In order to fund as many bus services as possible the State Govt does not fund buses with toilets other than on the main Intercity drag hobart to devonport. The bus operators and drivers are aware of this so there is good opportunity for toilet stops on major longer routes. It is always best to foreshadow that you may wish to use the facility to the driver at the journeys start but there are pretty defined stops for example Tullah on route 747. If that service runs late there is always time to stop but the drivers discourages folks from buying things from the shop. Well known other toilet stops are in Ouse going south from Queenstown and heading eastward Avoca, Bridport and Triabunna. These will get a mention in future UA-cams. Cheers Pete
