Great work as always bro, the audience for these kinds of videos are limited but those of us who grew up during that time appreciates this a lot.
There is too the lack of innovation, once the CnC and AoE style interface became the standard, there innovation in RTS became stale, at some point the only major game mechanic differente between different RTS was how much micromanagement you had to do, from a single resource in CnC to several differents in RoN, almost none RTS allowed you to order around your units with something else than very basic orders to automatize resource gattering or allow true maneouvering wars, with some exceptions, most landbased RTS made your base a fixed vulnerable location, the only exception that comes to my mind is Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak, actually, even in space and naval based most RTS did not allowed you to move your main production base quickly around to maneouver around the enemy, that stagnated the meta for well over a decade or more in two main kinds of strategies, trying to either zerg rush/steamroll the enemy fixed base wtih overwhelming numbers or/and overpowered units (scarab rush in Halo Wars) or try to turtle up and force the enemy to crash and burn in your defenses and hit back once their resources became depleted, enemy controlled by the AI never became sofisticated enough to actually engage in diplomacy and poltical meneourvering, even Stellaris, which have tried the hardest to implement such extra layer of complexity is frustratingly braind dead in the way the AI responds to diplomacy and spionage. I totally loved to play AoE and CnC, all of them, back in the day, but other than Deserts of Kharak, pretty much all the RTS after CnC Tiberium Wars became way to similar to each other, even FPS have managed to insert weird, quirky and curious mechanics on top of what basically are just point and click simulators.
I really wish they'd figure out a way to get this to Xbox series x and ps5. This game was so much fun, and so ahead of its time... I think it'd do well on consoles.
I loved the whole vid/ thank you
I was there day one. That music is etched into my brain forever! Loved it!
This game has saved me in some of my dark days of childhood. I completely emersed myself into that world.
Why I quit: I played for 24 years and had lifetime account. But the Bots got too bad, so I petitioned . 12-36 player Bots camped all the popular spots and preventing our huge raid. When I submitted a complaint they banned my lifetime account (not the bots). That's crazy... so chargedback $780 and quit. For other players who are fed up with the bots and the horrible GM rule enforcement, make sure to chargeback as much as you can ASAP because you can only go back so far... but be aware its a one way trip (whatever company owns Everquest won't let you back without paying). Reply
As far as your reasoning for class/race optimization, the reality is most important stats get maxed easy, and the only things left that matter for race are: Looks Good or Evil Ogre not getting frontal stun Troll/Iksar regen Starting home for the Origin ability (on retail).
This is freaky I was recently feeling nostalgia for EQ and then all these videos about EQ start popping up. In the current world we are in full of politics and tribalism, I miss the days gone by when my greatest concern was not going link dead in the middle of a big pull 😅 I do miss those days.
Baldur's Gate was a huge step down compared to the previous Fallout 1 and 2.
I think playing the Classic content on LIVE is still the best way to play if you have a couple friends. Level grind isn't bad at all and you get a lot of QOL.
I thought hard about buying Pantheon...but then I realized EQ already does the same thing...but with 26 more years of content.
I miss my old family in Undivided Faith. Much love from old Faydar/Faydyn.
Where is the best game of 1999? Gabriel Knight 3 Blood of the Sacred?
And where is the second best; The Longest Journey?
Hahaha! I knew what the video was about before even clicking on the link. I count myself as one of the proud members in virtual attendance in Britain (or was it Trinsic?) at the time. The lag was HORRENDOUS but I couldn't stop laughing.
As a massive lover of eq and lifetime player i highly recommend going and trying out pantheon. It truly feels like a new everquest and everyone running around learning the game. Its been a lot of fun
Outstanding, thank You for the post!!!
I loved asheron's call, it was so fun as my first MMORPG and I played it extensively. The game was ruined when it catered to the players and made every aspect of the game easier and easier. I remember pyreals, which was the in game currency, used to weigh a lot, and since burden was a aspect that would slow you down or reduce your melee skills, having lots of money had to be convered into trade notes, which were only redeemable for their full price if you went to the same town they were purchased at. They completely removed that whole system fairly early on and that's the moment the game started getting worse. Because right after they removed the magic herb learning system, which was hard but fantastic, and all of a sudden everyone was botting mages and level 126. Such a great game, even now you can play the emulators which are fun, but just not the same feeling because just like every other game out there, everyone is botting, everyone has is multiboxing, bots are rampant, buff bots are required to do anything, and its just a big joke of an easy game these days.
It really isnt great, rose tinted goggles these old mmo nerds have on, i picked it up and played. Everyone metagaming in these old ass mmos looking for perfect builds etc, modern gaming has infected these old games gameplay and most of the people on these servers are so used to playing alone they multibox accounts to essentaily masturbate with their own nostalgia and pretend they have friends. The stats in this game do not even do anything yet the whole point of this game is to chase end game gear with minimal effect, the main thing that changes the gameplay is your level so you are constantly just grinding to get to endgame and expect to take 3 months if you are playing on any of the classic servers. If you want to experience this masterpiece in 2024 just start up your own server, give yourself the best gear, and run around each dungeon and kill everything, any sense of community or what actually made these games is dead and died long ago and if you play on the servers you will see it right away, everyone is expected to get on discord or be a part of some larger community and wholly expect to communicate on chat if you intend to do any kind of endgame because if you think these guys also simulate the chat spam of the old days think again. Old school gaming died long, the playing field is polluted with mods and tools that automate or negate entire mechanics of the game, there is also no cheat detection so lengthy investigations from gms needs to occur before anyone actually gets banned. IDK ive seen a lot of these vids pop up recently and its definitely weak nostalgia bait.
Never played EQ, sadly. But In deep into Pantheon rise of the fallen right now, and I'm in love with it. Great video though, these games deserves attention. At least to compare how games have developed since then. 😊
He must not remember the skelly wars that would pop up around the holidays that had items that you would never see again I’ll never forget my first procing weapon was from those events
Nothing is close to EQ. The greatest game ever.
Good reasons!
Great game except for multiboxing and a cash shop. Pantheon so far is as good as eq and likely to be better in future.
I played EQ back in 1999 when I was 15. I played a gnome necro and leveled up killing skeletons by the dinosaur bones outside Ak'anon. I didn't realize at the time but this killed my faction standing with the gnome necro guild hall. I couldn't train abilities because I was kill-on-sight by the class trainer. I decided to try to get to Neriak so I could train at dark elf necro class hall. I got to nektulos forest but couldn't see anything because gnomes can't see in the dark. Think I tried to just follow the road and accidentally wandered into a druid camp and they killed me and my naked body popped at Steamfont mountains. That's when I quit the game lol.
Everquest was more lack of quality of life than mechanical difficulty from my perspective. WoW 2004-2007 was similar but truly remarkable in improvements and alleviated many of those EQ issues. Modern WoW is another story when it comes to the leveling aspect. It might as well be a phone game along those lines, but the raiding scene in modern in WoW is significantly more mechanically challenging than EQ or vanilla WoW ever thought of being.
Just started playing on The Heroes Journey EMU and it’s been extremely fun especially for us older EQ players who only has a limited amount of time to play and need to jump off at a moments notice. I.E. Wife calls for me…. There is no death penalty on this server and as long as you’re out of combat, you can always click back to the Bazar. In the Bazar you can port all over Norrath and gain access to even more port locations as you come across them. It’s a strict 1 box server but it’s a multi-class server where you can play up to three classes in one toon and immediately have access to some of those classes AA’s. You also be given some good starting gear for those 3 classes you choose. I’m running a Paladin / Bard / Ranger. Loads of fun. Come check it out. ❤
The "11th" reason is *always*: It is the FIRST 3d, 1st person MMO ever made. It's a living artifact. It is the "Super Mario Bros" of MMOs and you can still go discover why every game that came after it used EverQuest as it's foundation/framework. In a way, EverQuest, and more specifically the Project1999 server, is a living museum of the first true modern MMO. To be able to play it still, 25 years later, in its pure original form on p99 is a blessing for video game nerds. Just be warned, even though its 25 years old, it'll still suck you in and you'll be forever addicted to it like a bad ex girlfriend.
anyone remember "mangina" term back in the day?
Thanks for the great Review!! Interesting to see a Natural at his craft!! Preciate the positive vibes
25 years later, and still ugly. 😉
lets be honest.... its about 300 people logging into 1500 characters LOL
Yes you are right on this, i had a friend that could do raids solo with his Box army on live. Its pretty cool but pretty sad how it killed the environment . i went to P99 its a much better product.
@@ScottiefromBMW even P99 is boxers.... I have boxed on it myself with 3 computers.... you cant "true box" but its easy AF to box with Synergy and a few computers
Lol at thinking EQ was ever the GOAT mmorpg. That's rich, you must be a senior citizen thinking like that
dad... what is blizzard? well see. after the failure of atari... blizzard followed suit. by making games impossible to play. soon people caught on and just let it slowly die.
There is pretty much no video made of EQ that makes combat look good, even though, EQ has one of the best combat mechanics in MMO's. Combat always looks so boring in a video, but not when your playing the characters yourself. Then combat is so much faster. There is just so much going on. EQ is pretty loose for grouping, when it combats to combat in the lower level, below say, level 60, but once you hit 60+, EQ shifts, and fighting as a group becomes really important. Needing a Tank, Healer, and Crowd Control becomes extremely important, almost to the point that if you don't have these key classes in your group, that it's really going to be hard to fight mobs, because the mobs are just that much more powerful, and will kill you quickly if you don't slow them, don't have a tank, or healer. Lacking any one of those classes, really reduces the odds of you surviving. There is nothing better than a group of players that know how to fight the mobs in EQ. You get into a good group, and you don't ever want to log off. I've had too many groups, where I played 16+ hours, and was just having the time of my life. We would have players fall asleep playing. You can tell because their character would stop moving, and they stopped responding in chat. We would either keep them in the group, and just protected their character, and they would usually wake up, and start moving in 15 to 30 mins, and if not, we would remove them from the group, and but still protect their character. A friend and I use to play together. I had 2 computers in a network, which both computer shared a single 36k Baud Modem, and EQ ran just fine with so little bandwidth, which is freaking amazing really. I was pretty addicted to the game back then, I even changed the tire on my car, while playing. :) I also only played EQ while at work. Customers sometime had to wait for me to kill a Named mob, if they came in at the wrong time. My group had to wait sometimes while I had to wait on customers. It was a small grocery store, like a quick stop really. So, most customers where in and out in 60 seconds. I use to multi-box, I literally used 3 computers, keyboards, and mice. I was a Shadow Knight, Cleric, and Enchanter. I use to have a waiting list of players that wanted to join my group if I had a open space available. If there were no players available, I would just loaded up my mercenaries, and have a full group, but I would always welcome any players that wanted to join my group, and just shutdown a mercenary. EQ is the best MMO ever made. If it had a Modern day graphics engine, it would be the biggest game. It would be cool, if A.I. got good enough, that you could feed the source code into one, and it would recode the game for say Unreal or something like that.
Just picked up p99. Join the green server y'all! We're having a blast out there.
The end game is dominated by Krono and it feels next to impossible to level 90+ without spending real cash on Xp potions. Mobs have way too many Hitpoints and gives too little xp. Not worth the time.
I played classic eq when it first dropped and I picked it up during covid on vanilla servers. It was as good as ever and the add ons were fun to discover
Very well done, I really enjoyed it!!! 😁😁
To log in for the first time I’m 1999 was mind blowing the games up to that point were just rubbish in comparison especially the fact it was first person (well that is how I played it and still do). It was brutal but rewarding and grouping was often a terrible waste of time but when it clicked and you got a good group it was just fantastic. Bard and Enchanter classes are not in WOW and they really stand out. The developers just did everything right.
New takp tlp server coming in January! Check it out!
where can you read about that
I had a big box copy of this back in the day but never could get it to work on the old family pc.
They ruined RPGs introducing the carebear pve garbage .
EverQuest laid the groundwork for everything to come. They proved the viability of a subscription-based model for online games. Blizzard management made a GENIUS decision when they hired top EQ raiders of various classes to help with game design on WOW (Jeff Kaplan was one of them, for example)
would also explain why wow's group level game is horrible too.
Holy shit the algorithm trying to suck me back into EverQuest after not thinking about it for the past 20 years.. it knows me a little too well🤣🤣
I've come a long way in life wince my warrior kicked that invisibility potion habit. A lot of potion anonymous meetings and support.
Same here 😅
Ive been playing eq for the first time! Its great! Check out project quarm!
well played sir
I am starting a project next year to play all 365 days of the year and chronicle the experience. I used to play in ‘99 but dropped off a few years later. I did play EQOA on the PS2 for a while as well.
the private server Heroes Journey is a multiclass server, it's incredible.
Is there a way to play this on my iPad?
