The "hundreds of years of history of the Taidan empire" in the lore of the games has exactly one paragraph of detailed actual lore. Emperor bad. Taiidan are oppressors. Kushan exiled. Good guy vs bad guy. The end. These games have never been particularly deep. The story was simple, and yet managed to be compelling.
@@robinfox4440 this is a straight lie. The Homeworld Cataclysm manual has like 20 pages of lore, a lot of it regarding the empire and the Taiidan. It’s way more lore than any RTS I’ve played except maybe Starcraft or Warcraft.
Homeworld 2 is practically the same. You spend two missions near Hiigara and there's the conceit that Makaan is occupying Hiigara, and that's it. The rest is chasing after McGuffins and plot devices until you attain Space Jesus status.
Putting aside the writing, the campaign is about 10 hours long, and they're planning to flesh out the game with 3 (paid!) DLCs within the first year. Those should be included to begin with for me to consider getting the game. HW3 is not even close to being viable as a competitive RTS. I could see the casual co-op multiplayer experience as the only possible saving grace here.
Some of my gripes with the story are this: - Imogen acts like she's inexperienced why exactly? In the first cutscene it was told that she was supposed to teach people on how to be Navigators. If someone can teach - they have to be very fluent in the field for sure. - Isaac feels like he's more in control throughout the game, like he's Fleet Command and not Imogen. - Why the hell is Hiigara so desert-ish? It's supposed to be a paradise almost, very lush diverse climate and a lot of water everywhere. Why does it look like Kharak in that first mission? - I will not touch on anything about the bad bad villain, since it can't handle any level of critique. - They did Karan dirty in this one. It reminds me how "they" tarnished Luke and Han in recent Star Wars, making them weak and getting rid of them in stupid way. Karan would not held hands with an enemy that killed hundreds of thousands of Hiigarans. Why didn't she hug Makaan or Riesstiu? - What the hell is "Sands and Sinners", who put Hiigarans in chains for Isaac to have such fears that it'd happen again, where did "to be Hiigaran is to never be alone" proverb even came from? - Sure, let's just rest and wait in the end, while there are a lot of wounded and people needing help. Just why? Especially since "to be Hiigaran is to never be alone" that was introduced in as a "powerful" proverb in the last mission - sure, let's leave a lot of Hiigarans to die alone out there and take out time to happily swim in some hyperspace lake liquid. There are other questions and I hated the story with a passion. From bits and pieces of old trailers and gamefiles it seems like it was supposed to ba some sort of civil war and your ship was supposed to move in company of 2 more ships at least. That'd be more interesting than another story about unsure special genius girl that finds her place in the universe, redeems the enemy and wins the day.

The big issue is they went cheap on the story. I get lots of game developers really, really do not want to pay a lot for someone to write a story...anyone can whip something up right? Not really. When we look at the very best games most have an excellent story attached to them. Even when the gameplay is a little subpar a great story can elevate the whole thing (The Witcher is a good example...ok game mechanics and a stellar story...or Red Dead Redemption...or The Last of Us). The original series had a great story and great presentation and fun gameplay. Homeworld 3 looks fantastic but they dumbed down the gameplay (I want my veteran units and more units) and went light on the story. Cut scenes look great but the story just is...meh. And that lets it all down. Pay for good writers (I am not a writer...just saying). Not worth the asking price.
I'm glad someone likes this game and while much of any review is subjective I can't understand many of your praises of the games story. the characters are stilted have no real growth simply changing in an instant when the story deems its time for their growth moment without doing anything to set up or reinforce this moment. Between all three, though, I'd still put HW3's campaign story in last place (so it'd go HW1 -> Cat -> 3 for me). It feels rushed and from what I've been reading, that's probably the case. BBI has been really responsive to feedback and I take that as a good indication that they'll be doing their best to course correct. There may even be new cutscenes (we can hope), or at least new story arc expansions in the traditional art direction. Here's hoping for the best. In the meanwhile, keep up the great channel.

I would love to see a HW1 total conversion mod for HW3, the modding scene would be a huge asset for the franchise and community. ..... you liked the story? Really? How? Why? Are you feeling ok? Are you confused about HW?
Well... The issue is that HW3 has some problems (a main antagonist that feels childish and incompetent, units cannot fire properly in large battles, etc) that previous titles don't have, which are considered intolerable for many players. If it isn't a Homeworld game and doesn't change that much money, it would be much better received. Also, you forgot to mention issues like the lack of content (such as unit variety, number of maps, etc) and mediocre performance. I think there are reasons to play HW remastered instead of HW3, such as better performance, the existence of a module system, and more interesting ships (such as defense field frigates, two faction's battlecruisers whose weapons function in completely different ways), etc.
You mean the "totally misunderstood" antagonist acting childish and incompetent. It's kind of how Imogen feels a bit Mary Suish, same branch of thought. God the amount of complaining Imogen does in the game reminds me of living with my wife.
Damn shame we get the story about some woman who's lonely and decided to genocide different planet instead of the actual Progenitors HW Mobile's story did better than this so I was expecting following from HW2 and the Mobile
I am enjoying the game a ton. The story isn't amazing, but none of the stories from the previous games were amazing, or original for that matter. I think they are just remembered through rose colored glasses because homeworld was such a different RTS experience for its time. I mean Homeworld 1 is a Battlestar Galacticta story, and Cataclysm, HW2 and HW3 are Villains in motherships threating the universe vs. a Hero in a mothership saving the universe. The gameplay experience of Homeworld 3 is actually more similar to Homeworld 1 than any of the other titles. The only big difference is that the pace of Homeworld 3 is noticeably faster than Homeworld 1, but there is nothing wrong with that, and you adjust to it quickly.
I don't like cgi cinematics in HW3 because it ruins immersion for me. In previous games it feels like I was fleet comander. It was like strategic map, visual feeds from ships and comms were my only means to percive the world around me. Thou interactions between Imogen ang Isaac was really good.
You were never the fleet commander, that was Karen S'jet. It could be said that you were playing as her without actually saying so since Fleet command is her and everyone else is just supporting her. Like in a true military.
Fighting over Hyperspace?? Did we watch the same game? The story would have been good if that was the end goal, but it wasn't since it didn't seem to have one. It was just a platform for Ms. Joyce to self-insert herself into it. Barring that, the game is decent if you ignore all the reasons people are complaining about it. I suspect this will get the Halo:Infinite treatment.
if you think this is good, you are not truly the Homeworld veteran. Homeworld is not just a game, its a legacy of great story telling, not some woke LGBTQXYZ author job to destroy the whole story. It sucks because some woke women decided to ruin the legendary Karan S'jet and bring wakanda into the space. It sucks because of diversity, it suck because of wokenda agenda, it suck because they left the real core of the game. A list of things never good for the game and storytelling, diversity, woke female and too much wakanda stuff. There, I said it. Unlike white people, I can directly say it from Asia.
Check cleared, all that matters. But the game isn't nearly as bad as people claim it to me. Most of the gripe is the clear changes to suit a made up audience and the rather generic story so Ms. Joyce can self-insert herself into it. Who the F are the incarnate? Dunno. Where did they come from? Dunno. Why do they speak a dialect of the Progenitors? Dunno Where the F were they during the all the conflicts looking for the hyperspace cores? Dunno. Why does what's her name'ma not require complete integration into her ship to have such control over hyperspace? DUNNO.
If you ignore the story...the very thing we came back for...the game is actually okay'ish. I mean it doesn't crash all the time and it's pretty to look at. However, it's combat is somewhat lacking compared to earlier titles.
The campaign looks like a giant meme. Isaac is not a veteran from what I've seen, more like a tool the "writers" used to tell us how great Imogen (and Space Karen) is. I distinctly remember him saying something on the line of "I'm sure you two GENIUSES have already come up with something that I can't understand" which sums up his whole purpose in the story for me. Even the streamer I watched playing the campaign made several remarks about how much of a fifth wheel he really is.
@@iExploder If you read again very carefully you will notice that I never took issue with the protagonist being female but with the sidekick being effectively useless.
Lets see; -Malware -More Malware -And ID theft -Terrible Unit Mechanics, right now anything beyond "who has the bigger blob of mediums" is meaningless. +The interactive space terrain is a good idea and the execution is pretty meh. -The deployables (Turrtes and so on) lead to giant logic-holes. I really enjoy this game. I also played all the others in the series when they released and am a long time fan. The story isn't the best but the missions are fun. And the new wargames mode is the one thing that I was really interested in from the beginning. It's really fun! I'm looking forward to the future of this :)
Why do protagonists always have to be related? It makes the universe feel tiny. Same crap since "I'm your father". Ships look tiny. In HW ships dominated the screen, now they get lost within those giant wreckages. Cutscenes are 90% two characters talking. Again, lost the sense of scale and importance that old animated panels managed to get across. Blizzard quality... from 2003.
Game is fun. People cant see a good game cause they get hung up on the story "witch is a big mixed bag". There is skirmish and wargames but not currently worth 60$ atm. Buy on sale 7/10
This is not a bad game, in fact its amazing, the story is bad, yes. But gameplay is top, ambient is top, sound, music, campaing missions, all top, war games needs tweaks here and there, but the game is worth it.
Literally wasn't balanced at all. All he did was sing praises like someone paid him to do it, while mentioning the game got a "mixed" review score. The game is bad btw. If you're a fan of the first 2 games, you will not like this one.
I haven't gotten it because I don't have either the time or the money to spare right now...or probably anytime soon. But I think it seems pretty fine from the gameplay I've watched. It's definitely better than the mindless and tactically empty simplicity of Cataclysm...along with its thoroughly grating, hammy melodramatic voice-acting...but that's a pretty low bar anyway. The story of Cataclysm was really sloppy, kinda rushed, and ruined the very antagonist they'd built up the entire time. The Beast started out kinda terrifying and alien...and then just turned into every cookie-cutter villain there's ever been, and the aspects that made it terrifying just...entirely ceased to matter at all. Sort of the same as the Borg. Super dangerous and scary at first...then they got progressively nerfed and jammed into a mold until the Queen, where it was just the same as any old villain there's ever been. From a force of cosmic nature...a singular swarm of a "living" disaster...to some mind-controlled thugs working for a dominatrix with a grudge. I'm not at all interested in the "rogue-like" game mode, but that's no big deal, and if people do enjoy it, then I'm absolutely glad they added it. I'm also not especially thrilled with the CG cutscenes. I'm no purist or other fanatical type of moron, but the styles of the ones from HW1 and 2 are just...more charming, I guess? Improvements are usually the best, but sometimes consistency is more important, and I feel that's the case with the cutscenes. But, again, not really a big deal to me. The CG isn't bad...but it's definitely not up to 2024 standards, either, which is a shame...but pretty trivial in general. I'd like to get this someday...and when I can, I will. Honestly, the negative reviews are so absolutely stupid that it makes me want the game more, for how irrational and outright dishonest so many of the negative reviews are. Just a bunch of whiny 30 to 50 year old brats who got dumped on prom night because they don't know how to take a bath.

I would love to see a HW1 total conversion mod for HW3, the modding scene would be a huge asset for the franchise and community.
..... you liked the story? Really? How? Why? Are you feeling ok? Are you confused about HW?
It's very very bad
@@rh906 Well at least Imogen wasn't blaming or insulting anyone, so I find her tolerable.
So...a protagonist that reminds you of yourself...but still better than you.
@@DoremiFasolatido1979 No she doesn't remind me of myself. Actually, I don't feel anything about her, be it love, hate, etc.
Actually, no.
Damn shame we get the story about some woman who's lonely and decided to genocide different planet instead of the actual Progenitors
HW Mobile's story did better than this so I was expecting following from HW2 and the Mobile
"Homeworld 3 is good, actually" -- lol! What exactly are you smoking?
Gotta love how people get mad, for someone having fun, just give up on life.
for "someone having fun" on Homeworld franchise ruins? I fuck everyone who have fun from this
lol
You have lost any and all credibility by posting this.
I thought it was a fair objective review.
What is the point of such blatant lying? Clickbait?
I am enjoying the game a ton. The story isn't amazing, but none of the stories from the previous games were amazing, or original for that matter. I think they are just remembered through rose colored glasses because homeworld was such a different RTS experience for its time.
I mean Homeworld 1 is a Battlestar Galacticta story, and Cataclysm, HW2 and HW3 are Villains in motherships threating the universe vs. a Hero in a mothership saving the universe.
The gameplay experience of Homeworld 3 is actually more similar to Homeworld 1 than any of the other titles. The only big difference is that the pace of Homeworld 3 is noticeably faster than Homeworld 1, but there is nothing wrong with that, and you adjust to it quickly.
actually... no :D
imagine having standards this low
so its a big fat MEH
I don't like cgi cinematics in HW3 because it ruins immersion for me. In previous games it feels like I was fleet comander. It was like strategic map, visual feeds from ships and comms were my only means to percive the world around me. Thou interactions between Imogen ang Isaac was really good.
You were never the fleet commander, that was Karen S'jet. It could be said that you were playing as her without actually saying so since Fleet command is her and everyone else is just supporting her. Like in a true military.
This exactly
@@rh906 So who were we playing as in the final mission of Homeworld?
Not really that good in terms of story or RTS mechanics Does look pretty though.
Do you even have any history with Homeworld? Homeworld has always had a female protagonist, my dude.
@@iExploder that's not what he's saying. Doesn't look like he has any problem with a female protagonist, but the story being oriented by Joyce.
Its great ,but so freaking short its not funny.
if you think this is good, you are not truly the Homeworld veteran.
DUNNO.
i buy first hw1 and im like hw3, you are just kill now next HW games
If you don't like space babes in latex suits, you're gay
If you ignore the story...the very thing we came back for...the game is actually okay'ish. I mean it doesn't crash all the time and it's pretty to look at. However, it's combat is somewhat lacking compared to earlier titles.
Is being a shill worth it?
The campaign looks like a giant meme. Isaac is not a veteran from what I've seen, more like a tool the "writers" used to tell us how great Imogen (and Space Karen) is. I distinctly remember him saying something on the line of "I'm sure you two GENIUSES have already come up with something that I can't understand" which sums up his whole purpose in the story for me. Even the streamer I watched playing the campaign made several remarks about how much of a fifth wheel he really is.
Do you even have any history with Homeworld? Homeworld has always had a female protagonist, my dude.
@@iExploder If you read again very carefully you will notice that I never took issue with the protagonist being female but with the sidekick being effectively useless.
@@iExploderhmmmmm Cataclysm?
Not only more involved, but also has his own progression over the course of the game
The HW3 community is extremely toxic, prepare to get a ton of hate because you like a game.
Lets see;
-Malware
-More Malware
-And ID theft
-Terrible Unit Mechanics, right now anything beyond "who has the bigger blob of mediums" is meaningless.
+The interactive space terrain is a good idea and the execution is pretty meh.
-The deployables (Turrtes and so on) lead to giant logic-holes. IF we have the tech to build these stand alone firing platforms on the fly, Why not just vomit out a large Nickel-Iron Asteroid (aka an Ork Rok), slap a few turrets and a basic thrusters, with internals buried under massive layers of ablatives rather than building fragile ships?
-The Single player is a useless mess, both in mission design, campaign structure and story.
-The single player ripping the control from. you. at. every. damn. moment. where. something. happens. over. and. over. and. over. again.
-The AI stomp is (Currently) is just a rush to min-max frigs.
This is the "not-so-bad" game...
Or I can re-buy HW1 and Cata and play 2 real games...
the mega structure in the background is a huge let down for me, it ruins the grand scale of the fleet
good video sadly the has malware.
Blizzard quality... from 2003.
Story is too short and weak and game have pathing issues. But the foundation is there. Patches and mods will make it ultimately pretty decent.
I'm with you, bro. Enjoyed the game too

Thanks for the balanced review.
It was fun. People are just haters who blew up their expectations to an unrealistic level.
You can see imogen’s toes
/me loos at the primitive HW1 and Cata.
