You NEED to Do This Serene Waterfall Walk Near Osaka!
The Akame 48 Falls are a little over an hour outside Osaka and offer an incredible - and easy - day trip from one of Japan's biggest cities. This serene walk follows a spectacular gorge as it winds its way through a pristine natural environment, with waterfalls both large and small to enjoy all the way along.
This video is a guide to the trail and the history of the Akame 48. It also includes details on an optional two hour hike up and above the falls, as well as information on the Akame Falls Aquarium and on the "Ninja Training Experience" - which is perfect for families - on offer nearby. (This part of Japan is the historic home of the ninja, so there's a heap of ninja theming!)

Waterfalls & Incredible Views Hiking in Kobe [Japan Day Trip]
Thanks for your videos - they’ve been great!
Can i brush my teeth in an Onsen? I usually brush my teeth when showering, so just feel weird if I were going to a Onsen and not brush my teeth.
Generally speaking that's totally fine. Locals usually bring their own soap, shampoo, shaving razor, tooth brush etc to their neighbourhood sento, and more upmarket super sento often provide a lot of that stuff for people to use. As long as you do it at a washing station, or even over a sink in the changing room, you're all good.
just booked to do this in may

Okay for a 10 year old boy to ride? Children cycles available to rent?
Personally, I'd wait a few years. No idea about renting kids bikes.
That was a good and informative video. Thanks a lot. I will be cycling from Tokyo to Hiroshima in April/May and this was very helpful. I will have a look at your other videos as well :)
Thanks so much! Hope the cycling goes well :)
I will be watching this video several times! Thanks for all the great info!
No worries at all! Have a great time :)
Getting up to the bridge crossings was a workout, but coming down the other sides was quite fun!
Your guide is directed to families, but your tips are very helpful to me as a solo traveler. I want to take it easy and enjoy my first trip to Japan without rushing city to city. Your videos have been great especially the onsen recommendations and advice.
Thanks so much! Very pleased they've been helpful =D
Love it. Thank you for sharing
is the hike up hill? specially for someone with knee issues
The gorge walk is generally flat but there are definitely plenty of small sets of stairs up and down as you make your way along the river.
It's on the list, Beppu!
Very useful as going to Busan and needed to know which ones were tattoo Friendly
I worry about where to put my bike. I've heard hotels aren't that accommodating for expensive bikes, i.e. they won't let you take them into the room.
The place I stayed (mentioned in the video) had space for my bike in my room. I'd imagine that hotels/hostels that are there for Shimanami Kaido riders will have secure storage options.
This is SPECTACULAR!!!
this is awesome
Thanks for the post, Cam! I will be making changes to my Japan itinerary to make sure I don't miss this...or the sento to follow. Thanks, again.
Slick video as always.
😃 Another amazing video, Cam! Man, 30m deep? I can see myself getting into a lot of trouble!🤔 Though being arrested for freediving a waterfall in Mie sounds like a great story.😂
Hahahaha let me know how that goes 😝
Great video! Looks like a beautiful location.
Hi thank you for the wonderful video! I am also planning my trip here! Can i check with you approx how many minutes does it take from Aso Sanjo terminal to the active crater by walking up?
It's really close. Maybe ten minutes? 👍
Hello from NYC! Thank you for such a detailed video, we'll be visiting Kyushu in 3 weeks and while making itinerary, i was debating if we should make a little detour at Mt. Aso (driving from Takachiho to Yufuin) but after watching your so elaborative and detailed video, it was no brainer, I added it to my excel sheet right away, so thank you! How long was the hike that can get us closest to the crater, were there any signs forbidding flying drones?
Glad you found the video helpful! The main active crater is extremely easy to get to, no hiking required. Not sure if you'll be able to park right next to it (the parking lots seemed to fill up a lot on the days I was there), but there's a bus stop close by. The hike up and above it can be done in a couple of hours but I'd extend it out to tour some of the other peaks too. Plenty of incredible views up there! As for drones I'd recommend against even trying - there's no way the Japanese are going to be cool with that. If you're out in the middle of nowhere with no one around that'd be okay but this is very much a major tourist attraction, so best to give it a miss. Have fun!
@@Kampai_Cam Thanks for your response, we were able to park right next to it, however, the volcano got little angrier and we were asked to evacuate. However, the experience of driving up and viewing it from the visitors center was amazing.
The shitty AI pictures are not it man.
My husband would also glaze over at the 1000 year old temple! I was thinking as my daughter is 3 to wait till she's about 5 to take her (and to have time to save up!) But also for her to make the most of it like what you.were saying grumpy kids means everyone is not having a good time!!! Great video. How old was your child when you went to Japan and how did they do on the flights?
So sorry for the late reply. The first time we took my son he was five but we've subsequently gone when he was eight and nine. Each trip gets better and better! Mind you, he was fine the first time - it was just tiring for him and obviously we had to shape our itinerary accordingly, but it was still well worth it. And now he's fully into it so we can eat pretty much anything and do a wider range of stuff. No real issues with flights, thankfully. Have a great time when you wind up going!
does it give similar experience if I just get on a bus to go through the whole route and stop at certain good spots..?
You also have radium onsen in shinsekai and wako around abeno
This was super helpful, informative and loved see all the landscapes of Aso. Super excited to come here!
Thank you! It's a pretty awesome part of Japan so I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time =D
I've cycled this three times and your video still showed me a bunch of things I missed. Looks like I'll have to return! Thanks for the informative video!
My pleasure! :)
I just have to say that this guide is unbelievably amazing. So thorough. I have booked our family of 5 for next may for 3 weeks and will use this guide for the whole trip. Really appreciate the effort you have gone to make this.
My pleasure! Glad it's so useful for you. Have fun =D
Thanks! Your content is soo helpfull, much thanks for all your time and effort!
No worries, glad it helped! 🙂
Wonderfully information video! Are the maps in your video something that you purchased or got online? Is this it? shimanami-cycle.or.jp/download/cycling/cycling_map_en.pdf
Sorry for the slow reply. That was the main map I used, alongside Google Maps. I certainly didn't buy any maps. The whole thing is pretty friendly for English language speakers so I hope you get the chance to do it!
Thank you so much, I was sad the only option would be a private onsen. I have a few questions though, how large were your tattoos? And did locals that used the onsen gave you dirty looks for it or where they ok with it?
I don't have any tattoos. I made these videos because most of my friends DO have tattoos so I wanted to be able to recommend some bathhouses for them, as almost all the places I usually go aren't tattoo-friendly. If a place is officially tattoo-friendly you definitely don't need to worry about it. The locals will be more likely to give you dirty looks for being loud or not following basic onsen rules. There were Japanese people with tattoos at quite a few of these places when I visited. And when I was at the one in Hakone (at the end of the vid) there were a couple of guys with absolutely gnarly full body tats and that was fine.
There ARE some places where if you have a small tattoo you can cover it with a patch and still use the public bathhouse, but I decided to only feature onsen that are completely tattoo-friendly 👍
Thank you for this video! Definitely super helpful. Knowing absolute zero japanese is already a challenge in itself when doing research for which places are ok to go to and which are a big no no. This is a blessing from the sky. I'm just worried I'll do a woopsies when actually there and not know how to deal with the situation, lol. I'll scrub like there's no tomorrow that's for sure
Don't stress too much! Each bathhouse is a little different but ultimately if you're trying to be polite and observe the rules the staff and other customers will help you if you get something wrong. It really is the best so enjoy!
Wow. Probably the most informative and entertaining video on the Shimanami Kaido. Thank you!
Thanks so much! Glad you got something out of it 😋
Those leaves are sauna whisks. You wet them and use them in sauna to slap yourself or another person as a kind of massage to promote blood circulation.
Tateba is excellent and I'm keen to try the others next time I go to Osaka. Fureai Onsen Yata is also a great, tattoo-friendly facility in the city.
Kobe is a good city because the mountains and the sea are close. The view from the mountains is especially stunning.

Did u mean Fahrenheit ?
Thanks for an amazing video Thinking about hiking solo while visiting Beppu in mid Sep. Great reference
Pleased I could help! Mount Yufu is pretty freaking awesome, as is Beppu. It's probably also worth visiting Yufuin too ;) Have fun!
My kid is 2 and 4 years old are they too small to go?
No, but only you can decide whether you'll get enough out of the trip to make it worthwhile. Your kids definitely won't remember it. I waited until my son was about five before taking him, and even then I wound up carrying him a lot. We've done a few family trips since then and the older he gets (he's ten now) the more fun it becomes!
Did you just take a ferry back to the start? I know you said you were going to hangout at the last stop but it would be good to know how you got back to Hiroshima? I am assuming there is a bus station/route back once you drop off your bike.
Heya! I actually continued on. I stayed overnight in Imabari then got a train to Okayama. I'm not too sure about ferries from Imabari but it looks like there are buses back to Onomichi. Also looks like you could get the train to Matsuyama then get a ferry to Hiroshima if that's where you're headed. You'd definitely be able to find out the best options from tourist info services in either Onomichi or Imabari.
This is an incredibly detailed video! Thanks for the tips. I've just booked my hotels for November and this has helped immensely especially the links provided :)
Awesome! Glad it was helpful and hope you have an incredible time =D
Who was that handsome devil in the opening salvo? ;)
Loved it!! Had me properly laughing, too!🤣
Great job Cam! I want to go to an onsen SO BADLY!!!
Sento & Onsen are my favorite part of Japanese culture. I visited a different one every night on a 2 week trip!
Crazy thorough. Kampai Cam's got you covered here. Lots of pitfalls can be avoided by having this video in your pocket.
Thank you for an amazing guidance! Such a fantastic and dynamically enjoyable route. I'm looking into the same route from Alltrail and then fortunately found your video haha. Me and my gf are anticipating to follow this on the upcoming September. Cheers!
Glad you found it helpful! Hope you have a fantastic time - Mount Aso was unlike anything I'd seen before 😎 If you're going to Beppu check out my video about Mt Yufu too - that's also well worth doing 👍
I’ve been to Japan twice before and soon is going to be the first time with a baby, I’ve watched many similar videos recently but this one is by far the most helpful! Thank you! Also great visuals.
Thanks so much! Hope your trip goes well 😋
