Prefer? All of them depending on how I’m feeling. (Having said that, I don’t yet own a Namibian.) I love the feel of the nibs of the first three. Couldn’t possibly pick between them. You’re right. You have to have more than one pen!

That probably applies to European or American pens. But, what about urushi pens from Japan? Many people get them just because they are beautiful to touch and see. I don't have many pens, and most of them are rollerballs or fineliners, which i use to write and draw. But in this small collection there is a humble Namike Nippon Art (the cheapest Namiki) and a Cypress Eggshell (which is amazingly cheap just because it is from Taiwan.) I got these two not exactly for writing, but to give my senses some joy. ❤

I'm going to pose and answer two questions to make it clearer: Q1. Are Montblanc pens worth the price? A1. Definitely NOT. Q2. Are Montblanc pens worth it? A2. Definitely YES (although collectibles ONLY at second-hand prices but in perfect condition). Or in other words: Montblanc pens are overpriced even considering their top quality. But they are worth it, more especially if you collect them at second-hand prices. However, that being said, I will also say that the quality of a Montblanc 149 is superior to that of a Pelikan M1000 (so it's not as overpriced as the majority might think). For example: The resin of the MB is almost glassy (like a ruby when the light passes through it) and you can tell, not only visually but also to the touch (it's like 50% resin and 50% glass), that it feels much nicer. The Pelikan feels much more plasticky and cheaper, especially the cap (which sucks). Also, the plating on the MB is of much higher quality and long-lasting than on the Pelikan. I also find the flow in the MB to be perfectly balanced and in the Pelikan to be excessive, because in the latter, instead of the nib being attached (together/joined) to the feeder, there is a gap between the two which causes an excessive "hose-type" flow that causes constant ink leaks. Montblanc's after-sales service is simply second to none (they will completely refurbish a 149 with only the cap cabochon broken into a practically brand new one for less than €100)... They are always looking after you! Etc. Prestige is not only an image and an iconic emblem on a cap...

I have the good fortune of owning the four pens illustrated here. There is a reason why the Namiki #50 is the more expensive, which is the superlative quality and craftsmanship shown in the lacquering of the ebonite body with urushi, and the fantastic quality of the giant 18k Au nib. The other 3 are more similar, but I think that Pelikan offers huge value for money in the M1000. But all are exceptional pens, worthy of crowning any modern pen collection.

I like the m1000, very soft and bouncy nib but need to be carefull with it.. Montblanc and sailor are fabulous.. had bad experience with the Namiki. Lately Namiki is not per quality. when i was buying my Yukuri Royle out of 5 i had a choice from all of their nibs were not aligned very well with the feeder 3 had uneven ink flow, my no 50 only when opened it back at home. i noticed the nib cut was not straight and again.. feeder and the nib not aligned properly, all is mostly cosmetics but still for this kind of money i expect more attention to details ( fortunately my feeder not having the bubble issues but who knows maybe with time ). if you get a proper one though.. its a gem of a pen.

The Namikl is in another class. Not much of a contest. The KOP nib is the best Sailor makes, also great. The Pelikan and Montblanc are both excellent. Missing from here is a discussion of tuning. It is my belief that everyone who owns a fountain pen needs to know how to do a little tuning. There are so many complaints about the writing experience on all the forums, with every pen company. 95% of the issues can be solved with a less-than-5-minute tune. Further, almost every nib can be improved, or matched to the person''s personal style. I think three of the pens in your video were starved - a little - for ink, the flow a bit too low. (Tines too tight.) I would suggest that when comparing nibs, they should all be tuned first, to make sure that they are at their best. No criticism, just adding to the discussion here.

If I had the budget for it, I would go for the No50 without thinking it twice: I love the color, nib size, ink capacity and the fact that it is an eyedropper. But I would like to add a 5th player into the mix: What about ScriBo? They use the same machinery as OMAS did back in the day and those pens are considered to be among the best in the pen world, and they have many nib options/grinds (18c/14c; EEF to BB) plus ebonite feed! :D

I feel like the M1000 is an undervalued pen. In my collection, it seems so basic, but I started using only my M1000 with medium nib for a few weeks when I had some ink I wanted to finish up, and it made me realize how it really would be a fantastic only pen.

Thing is all the nibs can be tuned to your preference. But the comfort of the grip is something that people often do not consider. Finding a good grip section makes or breaks a pen imo. But out of the box experience in the luxury end I’d choose Nakaya. Still I think the Faber Castell grip offers some of the best writing experience period. Still that’s subjective

I am lucky to have all four pens in some variation. I’ll have to admit that I do have a soft spot for my japanese pens, so I tend to prefer my emperor and kop over my 149 and m1000. But somehow I find myself having quite a few more 149s and m1000s over the others. I think that is due to the fact that mb and pelikan used to have a variety of nibs available easily. I even have the 149 O3B and an pelikan 2B for instance and those were not specialty nibs back when I got them. They were just choices to have. One of the reasons why I don’t go for mb and pelikan pens is because of the nib options that are very limited nowadays. So it has to be something very special for me to get, like the green raden m1000 for instance; or the 149 curved nib which is a juicy glorious take on japanese calligraphy nibs. And although sailor kop’s and namiki emperor’s nib options were never great to start with, the writing experience is superior for me. And although it wasn’t on your line up, if you consider the sailor sekkei with the iconic naginata nib as kop, you just get perfection on variety in nibs and a stunner of a pen 😊 İn any case, I don’t think anyone would go wrong with any of those pens in your line-up. İt really comes down to personal preference in the end. But just an fyi: I have come to the conclusion that the type of paper and writing style I use varies according to the pen I use. Usually japanese pens will write comfortably on most paper but will shine on (surprise surprise) japanese paper. Same goes for western pens; I find they tend to flow better on western paper. This is just a personal observation based on my personal experience over the years. But I would have to note that paper quality and availability has evolved lightyears ahead in more recent years

Thanks for the video, always enjoy them. I have a few comments. 1) in my experience you are testing only the tip of the iceberg in what makes an enjoyable FP experience. I would submit that for real-world comparison one needs to fill all the pens, set them aside for 3 days to let the feed saturation dry completely up, then run the writing tests. My complaints about both my Sailor KoP Broad and my Pilot Custom Urushi Broad is that they can't stay wet and consistent after the feed saturation dries out. My MBs and my Pelikans have no problem with this, especially 149 and M1000. A nib that writes well with a dip but doesn't deliver the goods every time you pick up the pen, for however long you want to use it, is just an exercise in major frustration. 2) Your assertion in the video that the Sailor is more flexible than the 149 seems to not be supported in the least by the video -- I see zero line variation when you do your figure-8s with either of the pens. Perhaps you're correct about the Sailor being more flexible, but the video doesn't show it at all. (and I would submit that none of my 21k or 14k sailors have been remotely bouncy, much less flexible.) Cheers! Matt

Totally… it’s so frustrating if a pen doesn’t want to write immediately after a few days on the shelf. My Pelikan and Sailor pens always want to write and go to work immediately.
