HOW TO FAIL BARRY HARRIS SCHOOL: B*TCH-OUT ON BUD POWELL

Every 7 weeks or so, Chris Parks expects us to perform some/or all of a given tune we've been working on in Barry Harris school at Open Studio. In front of the whole class. This particular Bud Powell tune called, Celia, I found especially daunting. So I b*itched out of performance day. Everyone who played did something great. Sitting there watching it go down live, skulking in the shadows, dropping the occasional, "Awesome job!" in the comments, I felt pretty lame. So, I took a recording of a take I did a few weeks before the big day-warts and all-and built this video around it.

    Randomly came across this and wanted to tell you how inspired I am by your playing. As a lifelong guitarist who has been playing piano for the past few years, I'm just getting back to guitar and am determined to get more of the bop language under my fingers. Seeing real folks work through things is really motivating. It's easy to get overwhelmed by jazz (even though I've been listening to it for over 30 years at this point), and it helps to know that there are people out there sharing the struggle, rather than a bunch of prodigies effortlessly picking it up.

    Hey man, nice video - the "extra F" is not there at all. The final chords are Eb9#11, Eb/Db. Not Eb/D, that's probably a typo. No need to put the A at the top, that A would be in the middle of the chord. Gresse was probably meaning the last time they play those chords - Bolin holds the A over both bars and there's a little feedback. The triplet figure is just each beat divided in 3, and that's not hard because it's swung, but the trick is that the melody is a 4 beat melody superimposed over the triplets. It's hard to explain in print - do you use Sibelius? I have some transcriptions and charts I've done over the years I can send you. I can send them as a PDF, but Sibelius plays it back.

I’m flattered that someone who obviously knows way more than me about music took the time to post such a thoughtful and knowledgeable comment! yeah, youre probably right about gress. anyhow I dont use sibelius cuz frankly i just dont transcribe literally-as in needing it written. I suppose, if it plays it back it would tell me when im just plain wrong, tho! thatd be helpful. but thnks brother! really appreciate u watching and commenting. Sounded good to me, and I heard the harmonic rhythm during your solo. What irks me about playing transcriptions is that it becomes an athletic endeavor that is often followed by a solo-by-scales mentality. Transcriptions of Bud Powell are a welcome reprieve from the countless Donna Lee posts, but I think the real learnings are overlooked--it's not just a quest for the holy scale. Playing transcriptions can teach you how to organize and apply your rhythmic conception--shit, what is bebop without rhythm? Rhythm includes time feel, harmonic rhythm, polyrhythm, and rhythmic grouping. Without all that, we don't sound like bebop--or jazz. Unfortunately, that's what's discussed the LEAST in books. Speaking of books, please check out Jon Raney's first book about his father's rhythmic and melodic genius, THE JIMMY RANEY BOOK. Barry Harris had a lot of to say about rhythm, but we all wouldn't shut up about his scale rules and diminished wizardry--I am still studying all that with one of his former bandmates, but my teacher often reminds me that rhythm needs to be in the driver's seat. So yeah, check out that Jimmy Raney book--not much like it out on the jazzbook market. Jon Raney discusses how odd groupings create forward motion through poly-meter. A huge part of the jazz gumbo is that dance created by the clash of stacking rhythms and meters on top of each other. Mike Longo (Dizzy Gillespie's pianist) also spent A LOT of time talking about rhythm--that West African connection that we all don't talk about enough. That rhythmic concept gives inertia to all the scale runs and substitutions that Barry spoke of in his classes and books. He started in on all that with the 6:4 polyrhythmic concepts he used to teach about ballad playing--but we wouldn't shut up about all the cool harmonic concepts he taught. I wonder if Barry lived another 50 years, if he'd finally reveal all the rhythmic shit he was hinting at through his studies... one can only dream. Great videos you've got here, not easy to post music in progress videos--especially in the age of the "Instagram musician." Love the journey! Sorry for the long video on transcriptions, but I think many of us miss the boat with what we can learn from studying the music of the greats. Transcriptions are HARD to play, but what the ________ are we learning from them? Ellington never said "it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that SCALE" ;)

    • @jeremyversusjazz
      @jeremyversusjazz 8 днів тому

      really appreciate your thoughtful comments! we were just talking about jimmy raney the other day because a guitar player named scott henderson-no not the excellent jazz fusion scott Henderson-a fantastic straight ahead guitarist who passed away but was great friends, a protege and duo partner with jimmy raney later in jimmys life-anyhow, scotts brother is a great piano player who h happens to be in Barry Harris school with me and he takes all of Chris’s classes and through him only recently did I learn there was even a sibling named jon… also a piano player anyhow what a small world and I agree with everything you’re saying about rhythm also, I’m very curious about Barry‘s ballad concept. We’ve touched on it and chris has so far-in the year that I’ve studied with him- declined not to teach any ballads and he has several reasons for that which I won’t go into here, but I am really excited for when he finally does.

    • @pickinstone
      @pickinstone 8 днів тому

      @@jeremyversusjazz Glad you weren't offended by my comments on playing transcriptions--they are A LOT OF WORK. Here is an example of the 6:4 concept: ua-cam.com/video/3zt_yv-3qgA/v-deo.html 6:4 works great for medium and medium up tempos as well. For uptempos, you switch to a 3:4 feel. I never heard BH talk about that, but my teacher hipped me to it a year ago. Makes everything you play sit different in the time--even if you are playing quarter notes and 8th notes in 4/4. I saw Dr. Harris teach 6:4 in person, back when he did his actual school in NYC. But I only got to learn about it by staying around for the vocalist workshop--when all the damn horn players left ;) Jon Raney's book is a masterpiece. You have to be patient with how he notates some of the rhythms--he beams notes in such a way to illustrate over the barline groupings. The challenge is worth the effort. Few people are talking about rhythmic concepts like Jon Raney--and it makes all those Jimmy Raney etude books make sense. Charlie Parker and Bud Powell also make MUCH more sense under this poly-metric/poly-rhythmic lens. It's that RHYTHM, baby! And it ain't that random pick-a-rhythm shit--it's rhythm in the same depth that we study harmony. THAT'S the issue I have with most jazz pedagogy--rhythm ain't the icing, it's the CAKE. Anything else, and we're all JAMFs donning jazz costumes instead of playing the real deal. Last tidbit about rhythm that was hard to unlearn for me. Get out of the habit of adopting a "jazz practice rubato" into your woodshed. Even if you gotta play REAL slow, play in time--in harmonic time. In the past, I was so obsessed with getting "all the right notes" that I would play all my tunes and progressions out of time. Playing everything out of time and becoming dependent on backing tracks RUINED my ability to hear in time at jam sessions or gigs. Once I learned to play in strict harmonic time ON MY OWN--my improvisations got WAY better! RBH taught me that--I wish I picked up that habit sooner!

Charlie Shavers is universally known, admired and respected by the entire jazz community and is still revered by the greatest jazz trumpet players that have graced the earth with their playing. No doubt, he was inspired by Louis Armstrong, as every jazz player is, whether they now it or not, but he’s far from being anyone’s “wannabe…” Thanks for acknowledging his legendary solo on this legendary recording, but your comments and ignorance of the career of Charlie Shavers and his place in jazz (and music) do him, and you, a huge disservice.

I'd heard of shavers and have tons of records with him on them but let's be honest--he's not in the same league as louis or miles. He was a sideman for the most part. This is fantastic stuff! Props for thoroughly entertaining presentation, but also the historical stuff on the transcription, and of course highlighting the late, great Tommy Bolin's woefully under appreciated contribution to the world of great guitar music! Love his no frills Strat tone on this one, and the way that "now you hear it, now you don't" delay gets applied. Can't thank you enough for helping us all get a better handle on playing it AND deepening our appreciation for it! Dude, you are a UA-cam Treasure--keep up the great work!

    When funky intro is mentioned, circa 31s, it says "THE FUNKY INTO"....and I'm sure, after all the woik you put into this, that's just what you wanted to hear...😃

    Ive loved this track for 45 years and only recently started playing it. Your work here explaining details is really helpful - really appreciate these classes! Youre doing a cool job! Thank u. BTW any chance of explaining Stratus or Mahavishnu tracks. How about Evo Love by Jan Hammer form the 70s?

      @@ivonsmith4255 ha!! thnx my friend! stay tuned for Part 3-a detailed session on the famous head. then part 4 the solo! if I do a part five, it’ll be some Barry Harris voicing that you can co-op and fun so you’re not just playing the same two cords over and over again. I don’t know stratus. I’ve always wanted to learn it and I don’t have the chops to play any Mahavishnu tunes sorry but thanks man and don’t know that Jan Hammer tune. My love of Jan Hammer is limited to the records. He did with Jeff Beck before that I mentioned in episode one which are among my favorite albums of all time especially blow by blow and wired. I’m not sure ya were played on wired. Actually I know he played on blow by blow and his work with my Vishnu and of course the Miami Vice theme the original TV show theme didn’t really listen to much of his solo stuff.
