Animated driving videos to explain the key points of junctions, roundabouts and all required driving topics.
I’m having a Dave Day! On-trike footage showing all the support from spectators.
I couldn’t believe the number of spectators on bridges, lay-bys, roadside, central reservations and any bit of ground (including the road).
Well done all the bikers, organisers and marshals, the police, but special mention to the thousands who showed up to watch.

For the UK, except for Wales... Signs? No signs? Types of road? Different for different vehicles? How can you identify the speed limit on a road if there have been no signs for many minutes? What's the National Speed Limit, and what does it mean to me? This guide covers all you need to know to drive a car on UK roads (except Wales) without ever wondering "What's the limit here?" and a little ab...
Speed limit quiz - can you get 100%? A UK driver should be able to ace this quiz but probably won't.

Spiral Roundabouts 1

The use of lanes on spiral roundabouts. How does a spiral roundabout work? What do others do wrong? The video uses a real roundabout for demonstration - the A19/A183 roundabout in Sunderland. The source of much frustration to learners, test candidates, and qualified drivers alike!
Junctions - Emerge right

Junctions video 4 of 4. This video covers emerging from a side road to turn right onto a main road. Note that the highway code changed after this video was published to give pedestrians higher priority at junctions.
Who made spiral roundabouts he doesn't understand the made confusion everywhere in uk
I’m sorry, I’m not sure what you’re asking.
7:36 probably also worth looking out for vehicles not following the correct dotted lines. Here for example, the cars may (incorrectly) drift into the middle and right lanes by following the wrong dotted lines (where the dotted lines cross over with the ones stemming from the A19 (S) entrance)
Absolutely. Never assume that other drivers will get it right.
Thank you very much, very informative and really impressed with map in right hand side. Now I have more confident in driving in large roundabout!
Many thanks - chuffed that you took the time to comment.
3:27 Why don't your lane markings spiral you all the way to the left lane at this point (instead of the middle) since A184(E) is the only destination you can go to without looping back to where you came from? It instead puts you in the middle lane which ends up being the right lane on the A184(E) exit which forces you to need to merge with the left - unnecessarily inconvenient... I've seen other roads like this as well elsewhere, I find it a little annoying...
Consider traffic coming from Newcastle/ Gateshead on A184 in the 2 leftmost lanes. Both these lanes can go ahead to A184(E) using the left and middle lanes on the roundabout, then merge into a single lane after leaving the roundabout. Using 2 lanes to do this increases traffic flow. Generally I would only use the left of these two lanes as some drivers can intentionally make merging difficult for reasons best known to themselves.
This for me, is the underlying reason why drivers are all over the place at roundabouts. No consistency in the way road markings are applied.
Thank you so much, the explanation is very clear with the diagrams ( moving cars, indication lights and the steps we need on the right side of the video. ) Thank you.
You’re very welcome. So pleased it was useful 😎
best video on spiral roundabouts and ive watched loads.
Many thanks - appreciated 😎
brilliant
Thank you!! 😊
Brilliant!
Thank you! Glad you liked it.
Please could u explain the southmims roundabout the same way
It’s a roundabout I’ve driven a fair few times and it confuses a fair few drivers so it’s a good candidate. I’m doing very little animation at the minute so when I get my hand back in I’ll take a look.
Fantastic video and incredibly useful! The only thing I would add is at 5:45 "If there are three lanes approaching and three lanes on the roundabout, it should be logic at this point without the dotted lines." Very true, but *if* the left lane is marked Left Turn Only, do *not* include that lane in matching approach to roundabout.
Thanks for great feedback. You make a good point too.
Do we count an exit if it says no entry or do we not count it as an exit Thank you for video this was super
You’re welcome! No, don’t count roads with no entry signs. The logic being that they are not exits, but are only entrances to the roundabout.
Very informative thanks 🙏...
Really glad you found it useful. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
No help to the seven per cent of male drivers who are (like me) red-green colour blind.
A very valid point. My problem is that I’ve no idea how to help anyone with red-green colour blindness. If it’s red it’s law, if it’s green it’s not. Perhaps you’ll have to assume it’s law if unsure. Gemini, Google’s AI, after much persuasion to talk about the UK and not the US, still talked a load of bull about diamond and pentagon signs. The only useful advice I got was: * Nearby Signs: Look for other signs that might indicate a hazard or change in road conditions, as these can often be associated with advisory speed limits. Remember: If you're unsure about a speed limit, it's always better to err on the side of caution and drive at a safe speed.
It’s also worth considering the placement of the signs, as most mandatory speed limit signs are at junctions, and most advisory ones are not. This is no guarantee, so I hesitate to recommend using this.
Thanks for the detailed explanation. Writing my theory test in 5 hours!
You’re welcome. Hope you passed!
@@DrivingvideosUK Sadly I missed the pass mark by 1 point. Taking the exam again in 3 days time.
Good luck! You can do it!
@@DrivingvideosUK Thanks very much. Passed this time around 48/50 and 58/75
@@Abioladavid01Ah, good news! Well done.
Roundabouts like this are great, provided you can see the signs and road markings. In the dark, or rain, or after a few years of wear and tear, they can be daunting. Refresh your basis roundabout skills regularly, and beware of locals in a rush.
Good advice.
Thanks for this. Spiral roundabouts (specifically knowing what lane to be in before even joining the roundabout) has always been difficult for me, especially on a bike.
You’re very welcome. It’s a topic many novice and even experienced drivers struggle with. Hopefully it’s helped.
this vid gives me anxiety as a learner driver! lol. Big spiral roundabouts are bad enough, but slip roads are my enemy at the moment! Had my first few attempts at them recently and all that happens is nobody helps me out (slows down or moves lane to let me on despite me going like 60mph) and i've basically nearly killed me and my instructor both times so far!! lol
As your knowledge and experience increase, your anxiety will reduce, as you become more sure that you’re doing the right thing. Normally it’s too low a speed that causes trouble on slip roads but it sounds like that’s not your problem. Are you looking early enough to predict where a gap could appear?
Absolutely brilliant thank you for sharing I couldn’t go I was so upset but wow just amazing god bless Dave
It was a fabulous day, sorry you missed it.
Advisory limit 0f 20mph in a regular street with lighting not clear to viewers (30mph) very confusing
I’m not sure which part of the video you’re referring to. It’s not uncommon to find advisory 20 limits in 30mph limit areas.
Very good lesson
Thank you! 😃
From this video ,today I have learned how to read signboard in roundboards or road marking. Thanks,
Really pleased that it was useful, and many thanks for the feedback! 😁
You need to change this video to include Wales. There are not always 20 signs or 20 painted on the road. You have to estimate that the street signs are less than 180 metres apart. It’s all about the fine money.
Thanks for the reminder. I’m not sure how I’m going to handle Wales. UA-cam don’t allow editing a video so I think I’ll need a new one just covering Wales.
Just got my license last week bought a car and it was the only subject that I was always confused Thank you for the videos makes easier " the idea its always keep in the by side In the left lane with dots if it makes sense
Glad you found it useful, and many thanks for taking the time to comment. 👍
This channel is so underrated!
Thank you! Really great for you to take the time to say so.
Wow! For someone struggling to understand those rules (which are for others common sense) this helps a lot! Wish you did this with more different roundabouts 🤞
Thanks! There’s a second roundabout on the channel done with my usual top-down animation style rather than live. The two videos are in this playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLscyK-vhYfWzyJKi_g7KthrZX7eCL1afr.html&si=H-rhWPikHrC51hB8
I’m a long way from Watford, and I’m afraid I need to be familiar with a roundabout to do a decent job. Hopefully what I’ve covered in the three spiral videos can carry general principles to other spiral roundabouts.
Good video. I have question though as to why throughout we are keeping the right signal on while on the middle lane would it not confuse the traffic behind thinking i am changing lanes? So confused 😅
Once you’ve entered the roundabout, there’s generally no need to change to a lane on your right unless you’re in the wrong lane. The right signal confirms you’re not leaving at the next exit. Switch to a left signal once you’ve passed the exit before yours. The signals are to inform others where you’re going on the roundabout rather than for each lane change.
@@DrivingvideosUK thanks for thorough explanation.

Several of you pictures are deceiving !
They’re not meant to deceive. If you let me know which ones are deceiving and why, I’d be happy to explain. If you haven’t already watched the following video you may find it resolves your issues… Speed limits - identifying them. All you need to know as a car driver. ua-cam.com/video/281L8qs2Kdo/v-deo.html
@@DrivingvideosUKOK I've looked again and now I pause on each one there is perhaps just number 11 that is deceptive as you can't see if the section the arrow is in is street lit or not and only signs are for the start of the 20 zone so you would have to assume it is 30mph (but it could just as easily be something else)
Strictly speaking you have a fair point. All I’d say is that the street is lit and therefore very unlikely to be unlit before the 20 starts, but your point is valid.
Sorry but it was quite confusing with so many vehicles depicted, that I didn’t know which one to focus on.
Apologies. It’s very difficult to both keep it simple but also realistic. Perhaps watch once to get the feel, then watch one chosen vehicle on a second viewing.
Thans for all the information. I think I am better prepared for my course on Monday.
Many thanks for the positive feedback. Glad you got some benefit from the video. Enjoy your course!
These people are deluded they dont live in the real world and they never will next they will put it down 10miles a hour now i can't understand how this policy will be workable unless you have a electric car as the policy is dead what everyone needs to do is go too Cardiff and park there cars all around were they make these policy and everyone leaves there cars there as this would get them the attention as when the put on the m4 50mile speed cameras where a competent waste of time as when you get to theses places you are stuck in traffic what a joke and we are paying all the way to there banks
I’m not really sure what point you’re making, but the video is about identifying speed limits, not about setting them, which is what you seem to be unhappy about.
Very clear explanation. Thank you.
You are welcome!
Splendid video. Extremely clear! Thank you so much for posting!
Thank you for the very positive feedback. You're very welcome!
Most 20 mph limits are not lawful. If the council has not registered each and every change with the Highways Agency: they are not lawful; they are advisory.
What’s the source of this? The DVLA has nothing to do with speed limits.
@@DrivingvideosUK Sorry: Highways Agency not DVLA. Councils cannot just invent speed limits. They try, but, they are not enforceable, they are advisory (unless EVERY attempt is registered, which costs money) and people need to know that so that they can have this cash cow attempt laughed out of courts. 🤣 Go read the traffic act, instead of being suckered by MSM (just like people were with COVID).
The video is about understanding speed limits, not setting them, so forgive me if I spend no more time on this, unless you’re proposing that drivers should ignore speed limits because they haven’t been set properly, in which case I ask that you provide a reliable source for your information. Meanwhile please take a look at this: www.gov.uk/government/news/new-speed-limit-guidance-for-councils
@@DrivingvideosUK I suggest that speed limits are now becoming yet another cash cow from motorists. 20 mph carte blanch is ridiculous, and for the those that say "If it saves one child": that proves there is no benefit except for cash, because they have no argument.
great video mate
Thank you! Much appreciated.
What's the difference with the road on question 8 and question 12 they both look like motorways or similar kind of roads🤔...abit confusing!
Number 8 is a motorway, number 12 is not. To see the difference, see ua-cam.com/video/281L8qs2Kdo/v-deo.html
Someone will one day find a motorway with a parking layby and no hard shoulder. ;)
Question 16. Why does the green arrow point after you see a sign saying max speed 40mph with the direction arrow point towards the right but the answer is 50mph?🤔
One speed limit is law, the other is advice. See ua-cam.com/video/281L8qs2Kdo/v-deo.html for the difference.
I passed my test prior to the introduction of these roundabouts and have not come across them very often but i had to improvise on the spot when i did come across one andi more or less taught myself how these work...thank you for the video.
You’re welcome. Hope it confirmed you’re doing it right 🤗
@@DrivingvideosUK i like to think so but always learning .
American studying this for my practical exam in Sunderland.
Hope it’s useful! Good luck.
Why is it that a lot of drivers in London ignore the 20 limit?
There are many reasons. Probably the most common, especially drivers with years of experience, is that the 20 limits are relatively new. 30 limits have been around since the mid 1930s.
Thank you, this was very informative and easy to digest. I especially appreciate the in-depth breakdown of the traffic sign starting at 1:20 and how you've pointed out, that the order of the road markings translates to the order of the exits from the point of view of the driver. Kudos.
I really appreciate the time you’ve taken and the positive feedback. I’m really glad the video was helpful 😎
Great thanks
You’re very welcome! Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Great video, thanks for explaining. Speed limits aren't always apparent to some drivers, so thanks again for the video
You’re very welcome. Thanks for taking the time to comment. And you’re right! After 14 years teaching speed awareness courses I’m no longer amazed how little some drivers know!
@@DrivingvideosUK you're welcome. Thanks again. After nearly seven years of independent driving, I still watch driving videos. Always useful I find. Some drivers can get confused with advisory limits as they say max speed in them, e.g. max speed 40 when the maximum limit is say 50 or 60. Therefore, the driver would be confused what the maximum limit is; 40, 50 or 60? The way that I see it is that if the limit is in a red ring, that's the maximum, e.g. a 50 or 60 in a red ring, which means no more than 50 or 60 and advisory limits won't have a red ring around the number, e.g. max speed 40; the 40 won't have a red ring around an advisory limit of 40. It's still good to stick to advisory limits I find though and a good way of practicing driving safety. There's a road near me which has a maximum limit of 40 and has a sharp bend on it and an advisory limit of 30 on both directions of the bend. I always stick to the advisory 30 on that road, even if the maximum is 40.
Spot on. Red ring is mandatory. Mandatory speed limits are a maximum, and at all times your speed needs to be appropriate. There are blind bends on national speed limit roads where 20mph would be way too fast.
@@DrivingvideosUK exactly. On the road I was referring to, you can get up to the maximum limit of 40 on some the straighter and flatter stretches of that road, but going down the hill at the full 40 would be foolhardy. I often drive down that hill in a low gear (a sign on that road even advises this), say third, even if it makes the revs increase and the limit is 40. On the up hill, I have to often go down to second as it is very steep coming up the hill and getting up to the full limit of 40 is nine times out of ten unachievable. On the bends slightly after and slightly before the hill, there is an advisory 30 limit, which I always stick to and sometimes have to go less than the advisory 30, even if the legal maximum is 40. Driving round those bends at 40 would be very risky. And indeed, many country lanes are national speed limit (60), but you can rarely get to 60 on those roads. Even 30 can be hard to get to at times. There's a road near me which is national speed limit (60) and on some parts of the road, even 30 isn't always achievable. That road should have a 30 limit, not a limit twice as much. Drivers just need to use their common sense and study the road and conditions of it and drive accordingly. That's why a speed limit is called a speed limit, not a speed target.
As you say, it’s a maximum and we always need to drive WITHIN the limit, not AT the limit. Speed limits are set due to risk. Mostly the risk to others. They’re not going to set the limit lower where there are bends and brows of hills. That’s down to the driver. Imagine how often the limit would change on a road somewhere like the Lake District. National for the long straight bit, 20 for the tight bend, back to National for 1/2 a mile, 30 for the bend etc. If they did that then drivers would blame the limit when they spin off into the ditch. The limit is never a guide to the right speed, just the legal maximum. The right speed requires judgement and depends on changing conditions as well as static hazards.
Lovely and clear. Good job. However, please don’t ask questions and ask us to answer them in the comments. I don’t know. That’s why I’m watching the video. I just want the answers; not more questions.
Thank you! Much appreciated. 😎
I just passed my test in Stirling, Thank you so much.
Well done you! I hope the videos helped a bit. Congratulations 🎉
@Driving videos UK a bit? They helped a lot. I will just implore you to do more focusing on automatic transmissions. I enjoyed most, the junctions and the roundabouts videos. Thank you again.
