The 'Toyota Logistic 2024 Design Competition' asked contestants to come up with ideas for how circular economy principles can be applied to logistics. Where waste is brought down to a minimum, and resources are used to create as little negative impact on the environment as possible.
TIRE-LESS aims to address one of the by-products of vehicles: tires. As tires accumulate mileage, the treaddepth gradually decreasesand can negatively affect traction, especially in wet or slippery conditions, resulting in dangerous conditions for drivers. Hence, on average, tires need to be replaced every 5 to 7 years, depending on type, usage and manufacturer. According to a report by the Tire Industry Project for the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, 1 billion end-oflife tires are generated every year and there are currently 4 billion such tires in landfills and stockpiles worldwide. As this material is wasted, this brief proposes a logistical alternative, that aims at reusing worn out tires as weather-proof cladding, creating shelter in pavilions that can be spread across cities, and creating temporary multi-functional spaces in urban environments.
I did not win this year, but hopefully this is a subject that gets more attention in the future.
