  • "You Can't Always Get What You Want" is a short Blender animation by Max Antoine Lalande Danciger.
We start the story in neutral territory. Neither dull, neither beautiful. We are exposed to two children playing together, just before their respective families have been either promoted or fired from their jobs. They separate and journey to two planes - one is an exaggerated version of spaces such as the favelas of Rio de Janeiro or Fristaden Christiania where freedom and its dangers take place, whilst the other is an amplified version of Singapore or China where safety and surveillance reigns. As the story progresses, we see each child experience these spaces in duality, aiming to present equitably both spaces in terms of quality of life. From the bumpiness of travel of the camper van to the efficiency of the space ships; the freedom and expression of an un-ordered city to the monotonous and repetitions planning of spaces in a space station. Each scene has the intention of playing with the idea of bringing both planes into the same positive and negative light. As the children both experience these facets of their new life, publicness becomes an intrinsically key aspect of their new environment. And as they gaze, on towards Earth and one towards the space station, the dialogue commences emerging more clearly, as both don’t have exactly what they want and wonder if the other has it.
