I love the series so sorry in advance lol: I think slow movement in conjunction with how open and empty the world felt is 90% of the issue. After playing 4, 5, and 6 I was very excited for a ps2 dq game. Later in the game it may pick up (seeing as I haven't beaten it), but I don't think it holds a candle to other games in the series. Yangus (8) is a goofy annoying version of Carver (6). 9 might actually be better than 8, but I'd recognize 8 sooner than 9 as a mainline game. 9 is more fun (movement is better as a handheld), but 9's support cast is literal mii's that you build to travel with. Unimaginably bad approach to companion characters in a mainline game, though it is more fun than 8 due to better pacing. Lastly, 8 seemed to mark a shift away from the more serious approach to fantasy from the earlier games. Not to spoil too much, but 4-6 have a lot of death, sometimes slavery, and some pretty major dangers. Not just "we need to save the world". They went unusual directions, 5 moreso than any but 4 was also pretty wild. DQ5 is better than all of them, and it isn't close. Highly recommend giving it a try.

Combat footage isn't what made the game special, though I do prefer the combat pacing to modern DQ games. I did show some points with the bosses attacking, but if you want just dragon quest 6 combat footage I'm sure you can find it :) Dragon Quest's mainline series is more story and exploration focused IMO, though again I do like the combat in DQ 4-6 well enough

Oh that's interesting to hear on upkeep default reasoning, makes sense :D Initially the goal was to make it impossible, but possible to live for say... 10-20 minutes max. Then casual players would get overwhelmed in first 10 and stronger players closer to 20. But that would be really hard to find without more control and more time. I think what we got at the end (with upkeep turned off) is pretty close to perfect. Honestly... maybe with one less in cheat strength for the enemy would be better though.

I'll have to test it some before next stream and hopefully show off a stronger approach :D

It's awesome to see how well the different mechanics can fit together, I feel like it's a step in a great direction. Thats part of what makes indie games so cool I think, blending different genres/games and adding new elements until something like this pops out :D

A few extra tips: -Chests can be broken if there is nothing in them, so take every chest you loot for more storage space without using materials. -Don't bother with throwing weapons(shuriken and knives) once you have a bow, they just take up space. Make bombs into sticky bombs so they don't roll and can stick to ceilings and walls, this also works with dynamite. -Check the surface for cave openings and giant trees, they usually have 3-5 chests with basic loot.(and storage because you can take them with you.)
