DIY rabbit hideout using a $10 storage box
We need a rabbit hutch to keep our bunnies warm during the cold winter months. While we wait to start that project (on the long list of many things to do!), the bunnies need a place they can hide that is protected from the wind.
Enter this $10 Sterilite storage tote from Walmart! So far, Mikey and Snowflake are enjoying spending their time there cuddled up on the straw, and we can rest easy knowing our bunnies are safe and warm.

My husband usually does the assembling outside and I take care of the household inside. But with the help and direction of a very kind friend, I assisted in my first hands-on project on the homestead! It may seem small, but I’m very pleased to have taken part in creating a safe place for our hens to lay. I can’t wait to see what I can help with nest, er, “next”!
STOP the resentment cycle of OVER GIVING

Sometimes we find ourselves in a cycle of over giving, resenting that it’s not being reciprocated, then rinse and repeat. It can be difficult to NOT over give when it’s in your nature to do so. In this video, I talk about what keeps me from falling into that cycle and what you can do to continue to give without burning yourself out.

Bartering for the OLDER CROWD (65 years)
I have the Auertech twin tub 28 lb capacity (18 lb tub/10 lb spin). Yours looks a lot like mine! I love this one as it has a drain pump that does not require gravity. I've had mine for about four months and I love it! I live in an old two bedroom house with basement that has old water hookups. Due to foundation issues/wall buckling in basement that is now being fixed with braces, I can not fit anything wider than 21" down the basement stairs. My husband and I have never been able to get a washing machine or dryer down there in the twenty years we have lived here. For twenty years I went to a laundromat almost every other week. Then I discovered portable washers/dryers when he got sick with lung disease and later cancer. I do not have the time to run to the laundromat caring for him and working 45 hours per week. I actually prefer the twin tubs over the fully automatic portables. Twin tubs wash faster and harder (due to agitation system versus impeller). Fully automatic portables take longer to wash, on average 40 minutes per load. Twin tubs can often fit more in one load. They are more versatile as to where you can place them (even in your bathtub or shower!). They are lighter weight and easy to move. You don't need to hook up the hose to a sink with a twin tube. You could fill it using buckets if you wanted. I use a separate laundry hose I got from Menards and fill it from our laundry spigot. The only items I do not wash in this machine are comforters and large blankets. I also have a Panda spin dryer that is larger and more powerful than the spinner on my Auertech and I use that more for "drying" than the spin dryer that I use either for spin drying smaller items or as a tool for rinsing. I do hand wash whites and a few other items in a laundry bucket and then rinse in the twin tub and spin either in the twin tub spinner or my Panda. I actually enjoy my laundry days now! I like the hands on and not waiting around at the laundromat. It goes faster for me. I hang dry everything after spinning and it only takes a few hours to completely dry since both spinners work so well. I don't like the damage that heat drying causes (shrinking, color loss etc). I am VERY happy with my twin tub! It would also be easier to replace or fix since it is inexpensive and more simplistic than a large washer or dryer. I can bring it with if I eventually move to an apartment or other living arrangement too!
@@naturebound2901 That’s awesome! I’m so glad you have something that works for you. The only thing I wish was different about the twin tub is the load size. It can’t do big blankets like a conventional washer can. But I’m so thankful for the ability to do day-to-day stuff.
LOVE your cat and YES I heard her purring. Your pups so spicy and full of life. I think we need to go back to town all meetings for ALL of Community needs or wants and Vote on it. Pass bills to protect our areas before they pass bills to give us things we don't want. Also ENERGY HEALING and no more meds western which would take an understanding that we as ppl have Lost. Or at least most of us. This goes WAY WAY far back where most ppl can't even imagine doing so. Might sound odd to most but i have seen it done where cancer was Chanted away by monks on a live PET SCAN and the Cancerous tumor shrunk till it was gone dew to the love and belief. Another one would be Telepathy/Heart felt connection. Communicating this was was the first way we used wayyyy back when and it eventually became lost. Some ppl do this with Animals now and few do it with ppl. If we all knew this we would know ppls intentions right away. It would be like a computer screen/monitor over there head and we could read them and feel a heart felt connection before needing to talk to them or wanting to talk to them. Imagine if we could see this before ever contacting someone though the mind, we could see what kinda person they are in the first place and if they even wanted us to speak to them or if they were upset or if they needed someone to talk to them. I think using our heart first(brain) then our head brain(Telepathy would help us connect or keep distance from ppl that don't want any connecting dew to many reasons. LOVE TO YA! A UPPER MICHIGAN MAMA :)
Good friend there to help you use power tools. I FEEL YA! Same here I need that help to. Still learning on my homestead. YES I've learned when I give money to anyone that says they will pay me back, I NEVER expect it back that something I have even learned with relatives and friends. I only give out of knowing it's going to help them and never ever expect it back. You and I have some things in common. Even giving time to friends... I used to do the same thing and always reach out and help others first. In my later 30's I understood we need to let them come to us to and miss us just like you said. I'm in my 40's now and it's so much easier to understand this and some friends fell away and others stayed. This year I'm make an old scrap Table at the end of the drive way for FREE things to put on it that I don't want to bring to the good will or other places to make ppl pay for the things I would have to drive into town 25 mins then drop off and someone else would have to pay for. Especially in these times when ppl are hurting for things. I have left so many really nice things at the end of my drive way and ppl have always taken them. But I want to start doing it with not just big things but clothing and pans and things in the basement that are sitting there for 2 yrs. No more sitting around stuff. This way I can bless others without them knowing me unless they want to. I live in a country forested area that ppl really do know just about everyone. I'm more of the newbeee here in the last 4 yrs. I left a beautiful table with 4 chairs that I just didn't need and was given, Put out by the drive way entrance and someone around my area took it and in our mail box across from my drive way they left a THANK YOU NOTE with 16 bucks! I didn't expect that as it said FREE on it. PRETTY NEAT how ppl bless you back. I think the key is saving your energy for the right person that comes into it and that friend is GOLDEN. :) AN UPPER MICHIGAN MAMA
Hey thanks for the info. Love how you propped up the cages and even the chickens like it. If it helps I have the same cage for a hurt chicken and I lined the outside of the cage with Polycarbonate Sheet like you see on greenhouse and it worked really well. You can see though it and it's a wind stopper but yet they still get the sun. Super good for chickens and other animals that need the sun like they do for laying eggs. I don't know a ton about rabbits but hope this comes in handy some way for you or a friend to know. :) BEST TO YA, AN UPPER Michigan Mama.
@@ruby7741 A polycarbonate sheet is a great idea. I love the fact the bunnies would still get the sunshine and it wouldn’t rip apart like the tarp we tried did. Thanks so much for sharing!
Just an update on giving my hens soaked beans... They stopped laying when the snow fell. I had been lax about giving them beans for a few days. Started again this week and i have hens laying today. Of course, we supplement with a local scratch feed which has black oil sinflower seeds. But the beans seem to make the difference between eggs or no eggs.

Question - from the back of the coop to the front of the run, how long is it? And how wide is it? I’m considering this one and want to be sure it’ll fit. The measurements on the website leave me wondering if it’s coop & run measurements or not. Figured I’d ask someone with one :) 💚
@@melissalockett8111 I can give you approximates since I can’t open the coop right now to measure without them all making a jailbreak. I’d say the coop part is about 3-4 feet deep and maybe 5 feet wide. The run is around 6 feet deep and 5 feet wide. You can actually see into the coop better in my video about nesting boxes to give you a bit more of an idea: ua-cam.com/video/eg2kCbpc7uA/v-deo.htmlsi=dRtvoJZ_CHgZ30Yx Hope that helps!
@ thank you!! So basically from front to back it’s about 10 ft long - the whole deal (coop/run) and about 5ft wide it sounds like. That helps for sure!
@@melissalockett8111 You are so welcome!
@@miscellaneousme it’s a big deal for me considering chickens again (had em as a kid) so I wanna do it right! I can fit at least a 12ft coop/run combo where I’m considering it … and this kit looked like it would work amazing! I know the feeling 🤣. Always surprising how they can get into the fortress.
@@GrowsGoneWild Sounds like we’re all going to have to go military. Barbed wire, tiny land mines, cameras, and an alarm that sounds in the dead of night when the critters come a-callin’ 😆
@ yes that is very true 🤣. I don’t know about your neck of the woods, but tree netting from Amazon stopped the rats and the squirrels from climbing and eating my figs.
Thats so frustrating when that happens. They will keep growing. I've always planted sets. This year I thought about challenging myself and starting them by seed 😀
@@LivingOnPrayersOffGrid I wish you the best on starting from seed if you do!
Shortly after I planted our garlic, a group of squirrels took it upon themselves to dig them all back up and replant them all over our property. Our homestead should be free of vampires this year, thanks to the helpful squirrels lol As a side note, if you drive a few stakes into the ground to keep the chicken wire elevated about a foot above the garlic, it should deter future snacking from wild life. This time of year is very difficult to keep critters out of the garden since fresh greens aren't as readily available as the spring and summer months. Good luck on your growing journey!
@@storybrookefamilyfarm Great suggestion! I’ll definitely be doing the stake idea next time.
I bet it was that pesky sasquatch again. They can be a real nuisance this time of year. On a more serious note, as incredible as wildlife is, it can be seriously frustrating when they demolish your food crops. I had to build a fortress around my young grape plants since the rabbits love the taste of their leaves and have stripped them completely bare more than once 🐰 Good thing they're cute.
@@TheBackwoodsHermit Well, I hear the squatch is an omnivore who enjoys rabbits as well as garlic greens, so hopefully it’s a problem that resolves itself in due time for the both of us.
Good J.O.B.! You may want to put a rail a few inches out from the top boxes. Makes it easier for the hens to jump up and into the boxes.

@@LivingOnPrayersOffGrid What a fun project. I hope it goes smoothly for you!
Cool topic. Spending more time outside can benefit us in so many ways. Modern people go from one climate controlled environment to another all day long. Home to car to work to gym to home. Heated and air conditioned the entire day. I'd imagine our ancestors were much more connected to the changing seasons, weather, daylight amounts, etc. Their physical, mental and emotional health was likely much stronger as a result. Fresh air all the way. Also, congrats on hitting the 500 subscriber mark. That's a much harder achievement to hit than most viewers probably realize.
@@TheBackwoodsHermit Great point. I’ve also found that being outside more makes the seasons feel like they’re not dragging on forever, which helps with not feeling stagnant or generally bored. And thanks! I noticed you rocketed up yourself after that video that, last I saw, got nearly 10k views (I’m sure more at this point). My husband even saw it recommended on his UA-cam. Told ya people like watching the “back to nature” journey and thought-provoking chats! 🥳 Keep it up.
@miscellaneousme It is interesting that when the algorithm decides it's gonna recommend a video it feels it has an audience for, it goes full out. The same happened for another friend's channel, Brandi Lee Outdoors. Her video on overlanding her Jeep from a couple months ago took off and basically tripled her subscribers in a few days. It's a really strange feeling when you're accustomed to adding (or losing) 1 or 2 a day maybe, then out of nowhere adding 300 in one day. I'm curious to see which of yours the algo is gonna send on a wild ride.
Ladies today your ) Miscellaneous Me) channel was recommended to me. I'm super glad too. :)
This was a topic of discussion at our house recently. Community, porch sittin', conversatin' lol. More in-person interaction. This was something that was done in my parents and g parents time where I grew up. Lots of good memories.
@@Julesbc1234 Makes me think of Andy Griffith when Andy and Barney would sit on the porch and shoot the breeze in the evenings. We need more porches and rocking chairs in this modern age!
Yeah, that would be awesome. Nowadays people would be sitting on the porch, surrounded by friends, but still buried in their phones. I remember growing up in the ‘90’s when my dad would tell me to go out and build a fire because a bunch of our friends were coming over. We would all just sit around it and talk. No cell phones. That’s one of my favorite childhood memories.

@@GoldFeather123 Good on you for putting boundaries in place. 👍 It’s always healthy to balance out giving with also being clear about your own needs in the process.
My husband bought me this machine recently.. have you ever had draining issues?
@@Zayda20113 Sometimes air gets in the drain hose if I drain into a bucket and the water line goes above the end of the hose. So I empty the bucket I drained the water in to, and hold it as low to the ground as possible so I can hold the hose very low while it drains out. This clears the air from the line and it works just fine after that. Hope that helps!
Interesting. This seems like one of those things that women put much more thought into than us guys 😊 My experience is that it is my own expectations which determine how I view giving from others. If I mentally put expectations on another that they will give of themselves to me proportionally to what I've given them, I'll likely end up disappointed. Everyone has their own lives and motivations. It would be slightly arrogant of me to think that my emotional cravings are a high priority of theirs. I find it best to just give without any expectations for that kindness being returned. Then it becomes a pleasant surprise when the rare person does. Yesterday at the grocery store there was an elderly man riding on a cart. I noticed him looking over his head at the top shelf. So I asked him if he by chance needed a hand grabbing something from up there. If I expected him to shower me with thanks and sing my praises all over town afterward, the failing when he didn't would be my own and not his. I just did what I felt was right at the time and walked away with no further expectations. Every now and then when you walk away, there's someone who will track you back down to reciprocate your kindness. Those are the special ones worth developing a deeper bond with.
If the old guy wouldn’t have thanked me, I would have put his 💩 back on the shelf. He’s had enough time to learn some manners 😁
@@TheBackwoodsHermit I think men have it tough in these interpersonal situations because people often think men “shouldn’t” have to be heard the same way women do. I know men and women are different with these things, but it seems life can be lonelier as a man because it isn’t as socially acceptable for a guy to reach out and say he needs connection with someone else. You’re supposed to just suck it up and deal with it when life gets hard. I do agree with you that we need to adjust our expectations when we do something kind for someone and not expect them to sing our praises all the livelong day. Thanks for adding to the conversation!
@@FatGuyinaLittleWoods😂 That’s a possible solution

Sad is a pathetic excuse to not be "happy". First of all, happiness is a myth. It is used to sell stuff, but no one is actually happy. And second of all, nothing fun happens until the sun goes down.
@@curtismartin2866 Yes, at some point, advertisers in the US decided to turn us from a needs-based society to a wants-based, and focused on marketing to us to appeal to a “you want this to make you happy” model. I’d agree that happiness is a vain pursuit and instead, to be perfectly cheesy, it’s about the journey along the way that brings us true fulfillment. Your second point is valid. 😂

All of these sound like very beneficial things. Thought it was interesting when you mentioned a pet hamster, because earlier I was just reading about how all of the pet hamsters in the world are descended from one female. In 1930, they found these 4 small golden rodents in the desert of Syria. 1 female and 3 males that they took back to the lab at the university to study. Naturally, keeping the 4 together, she got pregnant very quickly. So they were easy to breed in captivity and made good test animal alternatives to mice and rats. They started sending her offspring to other labs around the world and researchers came to be fond of them. Breeding programs were started to develop new fur lengths and colors. Since lab animals are usually euthanized after the testing concludes, many of the researchers decided to take their new hamster friends home as pets instead. That's what started the trend of keeping them that is so popular today. I kinda feel bad that I lied to my niece when she asked where hamsters come from and I told her Hamsterdam.

I use egg mash at $8.00 a 50lb bag. Mix with game bird starter $18.00. 2 to 1 game bird. I’m still getting all the eggs I need and then enough to give away. Lasts over month for 14 hens. So $16.00 plus 18.00 equals 34.00 a month or better. Less than a dollar a day. Game bird is 24% protein..
How many chickens do you own? @user-wq3jp3qg1o
you can make your own noodles.
@@jeand2139 Yes. I haven’t tried it yet, but I don’t plan to grow my own wheat to then turn into noodles. I was thinking on how I can eventually source the chicken food from the ground up if commercial food was completely off the table.
Sprout the beans, or cook for a while.
Good point. I used to sprout mung beans for the chickens. Was nice having fresh greens for them all winter.
I sprout lentils and wheat berries every so often for the chickens. Also grow wheatgrass for myself (for juicing) and chickens love the wheatgrass, especially in the winter. I keep my garden fenced off but have a garden for the chickens with kale, lettuce beets
Beans must be cooked. Must be!
@@got2kittys Do you cook the beans after sprouting?
@@DiFish-z6n Having a little “chicken garden” is a great idea! I have a spot in front of their coop that would be great for that.
That dude needs to be in prison That being said, you wouldn’t believe all the crap they spray on your food to make it look more appealing
@@FatGuyinaLittleWoods It is ironic, isn’t it?
