Motorbikes will change your relationships – Riding To The Border With My Dad
This is day 2 of riding to the border with my dad. The aim is to reach Mount Gambier which is a town just across the border between Victoria and South Australia.
In today's episode we make it across the border and pay Umpherston's Sinkhole a visit. We then head back to Warnambool for the night. Another incredible day out on two wheels.

I looked at a CBR250RR but I literally couldn't fit on it. I bought an Across (the aqua one. It looked horn) new in 97. The stock pipe sounded really good but I put a Staintune on it and it sounded ridiculous. The seat is a plank, so I bought a sheepskin. It was a fabulous first bike that I posed, scratched and toured on. Due to it's size and the X913 factory code number on the side, most people didn't know it was a 250. I kept it for a while after getting my full licence. The frunk is brilliant and I never found the range to be a problem as after a couple of hours I needed a stretch anyway. It was so much fun being able to wring a bike's neck and enjoy that four cylinder symphony everywhere. They were also well set up for Australian conditions as the engine seemed to enter a lovely harmonic zone in 6th at about 60, 80 and 110. Mine would happily cruise at 11,500 rpm and 120 km/h until the next pit-stop....all day. Great little bikes.

Done plenty of full-to-empty rides, fill and go again... all depends on what you want to get out of it and other times it is just about taking in the scenery. My best trips are not planned other than to go out in a direction and ride till I want to stop and then camp under the stars in my gear and continue the next day, some people want accommodations in advance... But I have slept on the ground, by trees, bridges and park benches and had a great time, though sometimes waking up to ice is interesting. One time finished work and did the same thing about picking a random spot landed on Mt Gambia, 6 hours and 500 km later found a spot to lay down 50km or so before Mt Gambia, slept at a rest spot. Continued on and had a great day looking around, slept and then travelled back and started work the next day... That one I did with just my backpack, and done a few others with the tail bag and brought a tent on occasion.

My biggest failure as a rider is not taking enough breaks. I've done 3 hours in the saddle without even thinking about it, until the instant regret sits in the moment I try to separate my fast asleep behind from the seat. Talking about Bucket List Roads, have you found your way out to the Great Alpine Road yet? It's a massive, massive ride to do in a day, but well worth it. $300 in gear? $300 is half of the price of a decent helmet, let alone gloves, jackets pants & boots. Your safety is the most important I hope you don't discount it. also $0 insurance is very bold. a normal scratch on a car would be ~ $1k-2k, if you hit a car and damage it's frame / suspension then it's $5-10k; if the impact is head on and hard enough this will get to the engine and your liability could be $20k+, if the car is bmw/porsche...then this number could even explode from there
