I had one of these for a few years as my first road bike and loved it. The little "Across" did it all, commuting, a couple of track days, week long trips, you name it. 70,000 km with no significant problems. The only problem was the fuel range, but there was plenty of space for a 5 litre can in the storage locker, so that wasn't a major issue. These bikes were everywhere in Australia in the 90's, don't see many of them around these days
Ah that's awesome to hear you made the most of yours. That makes sense that they had to sacrifice the fuel capacity when adding storage space - 12 L is quite low for a tourer 😅
I looked at a CBR250RR but I literally couldn't fit on it. I bought an Across (the aqua one. It looked horn) new in 97. The stock pipe sounded really good but I put a Staintune on it and it sounded ridiculous. The seat is a plank, so I bought a sheepskin. It was a fabulous first bike that I posed, scratched and toured on. Due to it's size and the X913 factory code number on the side, most people didn't know it was a 250. I kept it for a while after getting my full licence. The frunk is brilliant and I never found the range to be a problem as after a couple of hours I needed a stretch anyway. It was so much fun being able to wring a bike's neck and enjoy that four cylinder symphony everywhere. They were also well set up for Australian conditions as the engine seemed to enter a lovely harmonic zone in 6th at about 60, 80 and 110. Mine would happily cruise at 11,500 rpm and 120 km/h until the next pit-stop....all day. Great little bikes.
I remember these. I had a CBR250RR and the Across wasn't even a thought in my mind. Chalk and cheese. Kawasaki do a Ninja 400 now with a 4 cylinder engine but they're 15K or something crazy! Anyways gotta love the sound of a little 4 cylinder screamer. Thumbs up.
I actually did get to try an MC22 but that was before I could properly ride, hopefully will get to hop on one someday soon. As for the zx4r they seem pretty cool but yeah at that price I think I'd just get a zx6r 😭
I had one dude unironically ask me why I rev my 125 so high...and it's like dude, have you ever ridden a small bike? I'd bloody love to have a small bike that sounded this good

Fantastic video... I now want one!!! :)
Started on one of these, do not regret it :)
Such an awesome starter bike!
finally an actual review on this bike
That was my 1st bike in purple. I called it manbag. It was such a fun bike. You could throw it around so easily. Loved every minute of it.

Ive got a 89' gsxr250r gj72a circle headlights it goes bloody hard
Cant wait for the day that you try a Cbr250rr. The earlier Cbr250r's are great and better imo.
I've heard the MC22s are fantastic!
Mick Hone has plenty of parts that will keep you going ...I would back the gsx250f against a r3 or any 300 on offer
Had atleast 4 people including a mech of 50 years tell me the across is way better then the cbr event to work on

They'll never understand until they've ridden one 😆
And yep highly recommend for the fun factor
My ZXR250 would endo if you pulled too hard on the brakes… twin disks
