    nice. I use a Hapax - but I need multiple midi outs. Hapoax has 1 Din in and 3 out - plus 2 USB ins/outs as well as CV ins and outs (I dont use those). With that I get 48 midi channels in and 80 out. Why? I use a Fantom from a USB out (so thats 16 channels already lol) a virus Ti2 on another (so another 16), a TR8s (I use this by a 3rd midi out so I can have one sound per channel if I like - or all on a single one). Apart from the synths mentioned - I then run an MRCC midi patch bay to a Sequential Prophet6, Oberheim OBx8, Moog Muse, Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave, and a Waldorf Iridium (keys for the polyphonic aftertouch). Mixer wise, I use a digital mixer Rack mixer (Presonus 32 Rack)- so if I need to actually change mix levels I do need a PC or tablet open but everything routes directly to my mixer if those are off. As an aside I utilize a Fractal Axe-FX3 not only as a guitar processor - but 2 lines of hardware FX..... Oh - I have a Roland RD2000 for pianos if I need lol. Its not a cheap set-up...........

    Can you try a simple but potentially powerful patch idea for me? Have the VCO output a saw wave into the filter, then patch the output of the filter into the filter cutoff, so that the filter modulates its own cutoff. Now just experiment with resonance and filter mod amount and you should be able to get an amazing range of timbres. On a virtual analog synth that specialises in properly anti-aliased audio rate modulation i got some fantastic organic timbres like this, but it was probably both stabilised and dulled by those digital anti-aliasing filters. I would love to know how it sounds on real Moog VCF! Maybe crazy bad (it might be less stable because of the tighter feedback loop) or maybe amazing.... i would love to know!

    Adding some kind of "warming" thingie at the end of the chain (Boum, Heat, whatever) helps a lot for the somehow "cold" sound. Then yeah of course, sampling (and resampling) is also your friend.

    I hadn't touched my Deluge since the OLED upgrade and had been enjoying playing live the Soma Enner and Terra with a Korg Volca Drum. The Volca was getting some really cool stuff but was limited in sequencing so I dragged out the Deluge, then the steep learning curve hit me again. I came across your music from a Reddit site when searching for microtuning for the Deluge and wow man. Everything so far has been excellent. It's so refreshingly different from the usual 4 on the floor stuff. I can't quite put a finger on your influences though but I can hear some 80-90s sounds in there...maybe it's the Moog. Great work man.

      Wow. Thanks man! 🙏 the learning curve can definitely be steep. Especially with the constant firmware updates that keep bringing more and more awesome features since it went open source! But I’d encourage you to stick with it. The deluge is crazy powerful! I’ve got some tutorial-y stuff in my songs from Scratch playlist and RSKT has a great deluge video manual series I highly recommend! As for my influences.. ya… they’re all over the place. Haha. I just go where the song takes me. lol. A lot of times I try to center a session around tying something new on a synth or learning a new technique and see where it goes. Especially when I was learning the deluge. Like I’d build a song around learning how to use the sampler for example. Would love to hear what you’re working on! Cheers!

    I guess/hope you know by now - for the ADSR1 to have any effect on the filter, you have to move freq cv 2 attenuator (below the resonance knob) from 12' to either + or - area to set how the envelope effects the filter (as positive or negative envelope). I find the envelopes on Taiga annoying too, to the point where I'm using external envelope generator to get around them :)

    • @oaklandghosts0510
      @oaklandghosts0510 6 днів тому

      Yes I have worked that out. And I kinda like ADSR1 working the way it does for the filter (or whatever I patch in) but I still find adsr 2 (or I guess both really) to be too sensitive. Might need to get my own external ones as well… The other thing I kinda hate is the way the attenuation works with the LFO on the waveshapers. I hate that even with only a little twist the oscillator basically goes silent at the low point of the LFO. I wish the low point of the LFO was just the spot I have the waveshapers set at and it modulates from there. Instead I feel like I need an attenuvertor for my attenuator to get the effect I’m after.

    @oaklandghosts0510 When you record are you using a mixer or audio interface? Regardless of the DAW. Just curious if you use a mixer with a built-in audio interface, or plug everything into an audio interface separately? I need a new recording route. I guess I'm asking what you would use with a band?

    • @oaklandghosts0510

      So I’ve got everything routed into a Tascam Model 12. It’s an awesome mixer that doubles as an audio interface and DAW controller with 10 ins and outs. So I’ve got all my synths on their own channels and the deluge coming in on a stereo channel. When I’m writing and arranging I use it as a live mixer in my DAWless set up, but when I’m ready to record all I have to do is open my DAW and hit record. Super clean and easy setup.

      @@alexandermontagnet3361I’ve had the tascam for about half a year now. They are expensive (tho not much more than any standalone audio interface with the same amount of inputs..)- but I got this one specifically cuz it doubles as a mixer and audio interface (or you can even record into it directly to mix master and/or stem everything out.) I would also note that I did use a standalone mixer before I bought the tascam (the Mackie Mix 8) and while it was fine for my DAWless set - when it came to record I was still limited by a stereo out going into however many audio inputs I had on my audio interface. I really wanted to be able to separate everything. Especially like the sound studio which is 3 units, but (to me) feels very dependent on performing them together. The magic happens when you play them all together but I still wanted the separation for mix down.

    Interesting. Regarding MIDI routing: - I used mix of 5 pin MIDI out in Deluge (with additIon of MIDI through on my synths) and MIDI over USB in Deluge and USB hub. - Just today I ordered two MIDI splitters (to chain them) and to move away from midi over USB in Deluge. Regarding audio routing: - I have too many synths for my mixer so I just use patchbay + small mixer as a "submix" for my three Craves - audio from all my synths is sent to mixer and later from mixer to Deluge and next again from Deluge to mixer and finally to speakers (somewhere in the middle is patchbay). - regagarding effect pedals - I use routing audio through pedal and patchbay (I don't use mixer for that). A little different setup than yours.

    • @oaklandghosts0510
      @oaklandghosts0510 8 днів тому

      I found that midi through (on synths) started to introduce latency, whereas a powered splitter kept everything in sync. Also, a lot of the analog semi modular synths don’t have midi through (booooooo) I’m def getting close to running out of channels on my mixer, or at least to the point I’ll have to swap things or use my secondary mixer as a sub mixer… the main thing for me is that since I still use my DAW for final mix I want everything on its own channel going into the daw when I perform it… I can’t get around that with the deluge since it’s only a stereo out, but at least with the other stuff I want it on its own track. What’s your reason for running everything out of the mixer and back into the deluge, then back out? Is it to utilize and unify FX using the deluge? Interesting…

    • @SmallWorldBigThings
      @SmallWorldBigThings 8 днів тому

      @@oaklandghosts0510 I use this kind MIDI through: Radias->Crave->Crave->Crave->Lemondrop and honestly I don't see any significant delay. @@oaklandghosts0510 Sorry.. I didn't notice your question about running audio through Deluge. The answer is simple: I don't need anything to go to computer. I like to sample separate tracks directly in Deluge. That is why I want to have all my audio to be routed to Deluge. My workflow is a little bit strange: 1. Compose song using internal synth and a few external synths (through separate MIDI tracks in Deluge) 2. Record/resample each audio track separately to Deluge from each external instrument (a little bit of work with that) 3. Disabling all MIDI track and using only resampled tracks 4. Final polish of tracks using Deluge (additional effects/volume/compressor/filters/etc) BTW: Mixer is additionally connected through USB to PC so ADDITIONALLY I can record in PC each track separately at the same time (8 separate channels in audio over USB) but I don't do it very often (I don't want to use PC in my music experiments).

    • @SmallWorldBigThings
      @SmallWorldBigThings 8 днів тому

      I think that’s a good way to describe it. Haha. I’ve had it for a couple months and gone back and forth on it. It was super frustrating at first to even get it to work. The waveshapers/wave folding can produce some really harsh sounds - which for me is not often to my liking. Treating them more like filters you can modulate is def a cool way to go instead. I’ve made some really great drones with it (3 oscillators and a low pass gate make that really fun!) and some really complex arpeggio sounds. Actually the latest patch I made on a current song I’m working might’ve kept me sold on it. Really cool pad with a complex timbre utilizing a pseudo-random shift register. My main problem with it is I don’t feel like I can quite get the sounds I’m after yet… I happy accident into some pretty rad stuff, but I don’t feel like I’ve ‘tamed the taiga’ but that’s not necessarily a bad thing…

    • @SmallWorldBigThings

      @@oaklandghosts0510 Yes... wavefolding is little unpredictable if you didn't play with it more. I have it only on one of my synths (Korg Radias) but honestly I don't use it sooo often. Based on your video I see Taiga has quite nice filter... and super nice patchbay ;) BTW: Morphing oscillators would be also nice in this synth - I like this feature in Uno Synth Pro which (as I wrote you before) is my equivalent of your Taiga in aspect of "3 oscillators in analog synth" ;)

    4:58 - What you want is distortion-per-voice, usually applied with the filter's overdrive. Moog does this with almost every synth, that's what gives them the 'sound'. Some cheap synths can pull it off, like the SonicCell but most modern synths either omit it or just implement 'good enough' filter saturator, which usually does not give you the epic growl of the synts from the 70s and 80s.

    11:09 being in the moment is the key concept to me! I grew up playing "IRL" instruments lol 😋 writing down lyrics with chords over them, practicing with people and then recording. I feel like there's something special about taking even a single damn moment to think about things 🙃 Imo, the computer is arranging, mixing, rethinking, layering, polishing, finishing things- but the creating part feels so much more motivating and actually creative outside the screen!

    • @oaklandghosts0510
      @oaklandghosts0510 12 днів тому

      This times 1000! This is how I came up too. In bands with physical instruments working in a room In the moment. I started working in DAWs as soon as they were available (I’m talking Pro Tools 1!) but back then they were more for capturing sound. They were just slick alternatives to recording studios. Over time that changed as we all found clever and creative ways of using them as part of the creative and songwriting process, but I think I totally missed the magic of just being in the moment working with an instrument to actually just play. I think back to how rarely I had those happy mistakes working in a DAW to write vs how frequently it happens outside the box just turning knobs and entering weird patterns. It’s totally changed the type of music I make now and I feel so much more inspired everytime I turn something on.

    Oh man... Are you me? I went 100% the same path from DAW-centric to DAW-less... now Deluge is my "DAW of a choice" in my DAW-less setup. 1. 100% agree regarding the Lemondrop! An AMAZING small granular synth, and nothing can replicate granular synthesis! You have to have one of these little beauties! 2. Mother32... too expensive for me... but I have three Behringer Craves, which work beautifully with each other (and they have MIDI in/out/through). 3. Option to record in DAW? Yes, sir! I have it with my small mixer - Behringer Flow 8. But I also like to record separate tracks directly in Deluge. 4. Effects? Zoia and Microcosm are on my shopping list... however, I'm opting to buy Microcosm first (I like to play with ambient sounds). Currently, my main effect pedal is Zoom MS-70CDR. 5. The idea to not overlap other instruments? Yes... of course! However, very often the definition of "overlapping" is so different and flexible... so it's hard to avoid it. 6. Three oscillators in an analog synth? Yes, yes, yes! I also wanted to try it... but in a less expensive instrument than the Pittsburgh Modular Taiga. My weapon of choice is the Uno Synth Pro, and I love it! What else do I have? 1. Patchbay! I have more instruments than inputs in my mixer (8 inputs in Flow 8), so to efficiently switch between a few more instruments I use a patchbay (PX2000 from Behringer). 2. Arturia 49 Key Analog Experience The Laboratory - because sometimes you want to record to Deluge some longer, more organic sounds that come from your heart... and it's built like a tank! 3. Waldorf Blofeld (desktop version) - the king in the "price to value" category. Wavetables (!), multiple different types of oscillators (!!), 16-timbral instrument (!!!). Definitely no overlap with my other instruments and amazing, amazing patches! 4. Aira VT-3 + Aira TB-3 from Roland - because everyone needs a good vocoder and a good clone of famous TB-303 ;) 5. Korg Radias - because it's just an AMAZING synth. Nothing to add. 6. Roland MC-101 - because it can do so much... and it has so many famous sounds from Roland. Besides that, it's a battery-powered device - so very often, it's my companion ona a small trips. Do I have anything more on my shopping list? Of course I have ;) 1. Midi hub to manage better all my devices 2. Hologram Microcosm - you know what it is ;) 3. Access Virus Ti 2 - definitely it would be overlap with my other gear.... but maybe one day I will make this expensive present to myself? It is absolutely legendary device with huge sound. 4. JP-8080 - because it is the same amazing instrument as mine Radias ;) Again - very expensive :/
