Make Your Photos Stand Out with This Simple Technique (Sony A7 IV and Fujifilm X100VI)
Lighting and color play some of the biggest roles in making good photos, but so does composition, specifically using foreground elements to add depth. It's a simple way to make your photos pop and stand out. In this video, we're breaking down some of my favorite foreground elements and how I like to use them, plus the pitfalls to avoid when using this technique.

    I bought one to add to my travel kit and I’m using it on my compact C bodies like the A7CR and A7CII. I’ve always owned a f/2.8 70-200 and have the GM II since it came out but size, weight, and versatility convinced me to get the f/4 G and I found a mint used copy to save some money. Also can leave my FE 90/2.8 G MACRO at home now so it really lightens my load when low light is not a must. Thank you for your video and take care.

    A classic clean, sharp, Sony news-footage-worthy, editorial gathering lens that, as long as you have your exposure correct, tells it like it is with no "character coloring": very important in news gathering. Pros choose rather brighter lenses and that's nothing weird because they make a living from photography. But the f/4 like this one should be good enough for most shooters 👌If it's too expensive there are still great third party alternatives.

    I am thinking of going for the 70-200mm f2.8 GMII is there a huge difference or is the extra 1/3rd of an F Stop of light worth it?

    • @ChrisHagan
      @ChrisHagan 2 місяці тому

      f/2.8 to f/4 is actually a full stop of light difference, and it certainly makes a difference indoors in dimly lit scenarios. Couple of examples: Photographing college basketball indoors, I was able to shoot at ISO 1000 at f/4 with a 1/400s shutter. That's probably a tad slow, but it did freeze motion well and noise was well-controlled. You could certainly go higher on ISO. Photographing event speakers on stage indoors, even with some stage lighting, I was at ISO 2500 at f/2.8 with 1/160s shutter speed. That's the slowest I'd go. If it were an f/4 lens in that situation, I'd be probably be at ISO 4000 or 5000. If you're comfortable shooting in that range, save your money and go f/4. But if you're shooting events without flash, I'd go f/2.8. The GMII is incredible and a big step up from the original, just not as compact.

    Awesome video, thanks for posting. I have a question regarding the new 5th generation sensor. Are there any improvements besides the pixel count? Some youtubers mentioned that new sensor has more vivid and punchier colors versus 4th gen with more flat and muted output. I narrowed down to XS20 and XT50, but 26 megapixels is more than enough for me. On the other hand, if new sensor has batter output, I want it to get one. I plan to use Jpeg with film simulations.

    • @ChrisHagan
      @ChrisHagan 2 місяці тому

      I never used the previous sensor. But I’ve read similar things, especially that blues are punchier on the newer sensor. There are a lot of recipes already that are adjusted for the X100VI / XT50. I was attracted to the VI after seeing the colors from the V and haven’t been disappointed, so I think either of the last two generations of sensors will do you well. 40mp has been nice for cropping, especially when I want to crop into a landscape shot and make it 9x16 for social media, but even with 26mp there’s plenty of room to crop and still post a sharp image.

    Great video! I have been using both Sony and Fuji for a few years now (A74/XT-5/X100vi). I agree that the Fuji AF is not on the same level as Sony, but if you haven’t already, do make sure that you are putting the camera In “boost” mode (in Menu - wrench icon>power management>performance>boost). This allows the camera to use the full functionality of the AF system and for some reason is not on by default out of the box.

    Hey again, gotta say, that's one cute kid! I remember those days myself: There is no way I could have lugged around the amount of gear I now drag with me everywhere when I was toting around a diaper bag. I did have a professional SLR (film) camera and some nice lenses and a 120 box, but they pretty much went into storage until my kid was almost ten. I found your channel about a year ago when I was deciding on e-mount prime and zoom lenses. At the time I was saving for the A74, but then Sony announced the A6700, and I bit on that instead. Got a X100vi in Feb 24 (with the weather kit); first X100 series camera. I do, however, use a XT5 so not my first foray into Fujiland. Great tips. I agree, one has to understand the AF system and settings and apply them correctly. I have MF+AF off and do not use subject detection. I’ve been shooting Fuji for a couple years. I tried shooting jpeg only, then jpeg + raw. But I’ve finally landed on shooting raw only. It just gives me more flexibility and I don’t have extra files to deal with. Capture One is my editing software of choice and they partnered with Fuji to create the film simulations accurately in the software. I usually just set the camera to Astia as a starting point, which in my opinion is the best all around film simulation as it has great skin tones. But then I may change it once I’m in Capture One depending on the situation.

    • @ChrisHagan
      @ChrisHagan 2 місяці тому

      I’ve done that with a few raws in Lightroom. Sounds similar to Capture One, but you can set the color profile to any film simulation the camera has. I’ll probably experiment more with it when I do some hiking this summer and attempt some landscape photos.

    How's the viewfinder on the Fuji?

    • @ChrisHagan
      @ChrisHagan 2 місяці тому

      OVF and EVF are both solid. Kind of indifferent to me, neither bad nor amazing. I think it’s a personal preference, but I usually go with the EVF so to have a better idea of the image. It’s also worth the few minutes it takes to adjust the brightness on the viewfinder and LCD screen. I found the LCD to be bright by default. So images that I thought were properly exposed came out a bit underexposed.

    I agree with you that Photoshop and Lightroom are the gold standard, but I have decided the only way I can use these programs is on a dedicated MacBook Pro that I don't use for anything else except photo and video editing. Until such time as I can afford that, I've been editing my stills photos with nothing more than... Gimp. I did purchase a perpetual, downsized verstion of Photoshop, but I deleted it because of all the AI crud Adobe began downloading onto my computer, stuff that my version of P-Shop couldn't even use, all "AI learning" stuff I don't want anywhere near my photos or, for that matter, any of my other work (manuscripts, music, etc). (How exactly do kids do their homework anymore these days? Never mind; I don't want to know). As for video, I edit with Vegas Pro and I love it, but you don't hear much about Vegas anymore. Changing the subject, I do have a question. What exactly is metadata and how do you view it on your photo file? Also, and more importantly -- how can you "bake" info like authorship, lens focal length, f stop, shutter speed, etc into your photo and video files in such a way as to ensure that authorship can't be changed when you upload to, say, a stock photo site or UA-cam? Or can this even be done? My apologies I don't know this already, but no one makes this a topic of conversation, and I have to guess it is either because this is a topic so basic no one needs to discuss it, or that it is a topic so feared that no one dares.

    • @ChrisHagan
      @ChrisHagan 2 місяці тому

      As far as I know, the metadata can be found in your JPG files by right-clicking on the file in "Finder" on Mac, and then clicking "Get Info." You'll find camera manufactuerer and model, focal length, f-stop and shutter speed. On a PC, right click the JPG and click "Properties." Then look under the "Details" tab and it will have all of that info, plus your ISO as well. No matter where you send that file, that information shouldn't be changed. Modern mirrorless cameras (all the ones that I've used in the last five years at least) should bake this into the file, even if you just take the JPG file straight out of camera. Within Lightroom Classic, you can also customize the metadata with a TON of things, including copyright and creator. I don't know that it's foolproof once you upload it to a stock site or even your own website. So it's worth checking their terms and agreements and protecting them as best you can. Leica's M11-P has a content credential encryption that can be verified via Adobe that sounds like it's better at catching thieves, but even that doesn't sound perfect. Hope that helps. And hopefully others see this because it's important to know in today's age of AI and content being aggregated all over the internet.

      @@ChrisHagan THANK YOU! I grew up during the days of...typewriters. No joke. No computers anywhere; and when I went to college, same; although, PC's were on the horizon. In college, there was only one person who had a PC, and he had built that himself. This is all stuff I never got. I appreciate this info! P.S. From the perspective of this old fart, AI terrifies me. My Dad knew how to use a slide rule, and he was faster calculating math in his head than I ever was with a calculator. He retired a Boeing 777 Captain, and he could land his Mooney like a bird spot-lands on a branch. People are not learning critical thinking anymore, and seem to be all too happy to let something else do the thinking for them. I'm not going to give up my will, my logic, or my artistry to a computer aggrigated program. Keep up the great work putting out these videos! I really look forward to them.

    Really great review. This just confirmed it's my next purchase. Do you think it would be better with a lens collar? It's a similar weight to the Tamron 50-400 and that has one. A little concerned it might put too much pressure on the body when extended on a tripod.

    • @ChrisHagan

      I do think it would be better with a collar. But I have used it for wedding ceremonies (30ish minutes or so) on a tripod on my A7 IV without a collar though. No issues doing so.

    Yeah, when I travel my 85 stays at home lol. It's just not versatile enough to justify lugging it around. I typically take 2 lenses. My 35GM and either the 20G or Sigma 14-24 I'll also have my RX100 Vii on me for longer shots.

    Interestingly, the crowded environment is exactly why I love the 135: no need to ask people to move. If you want a head and shoulders shot while everybody else in the background melts into swirly, oil-painting-like bokeh swirls, it's the 135 for me. But I loved the shots you got with the 35mm focal length where you could see the subject and the context of the background. And while 24mm is my go-to for head-to-toe portraits in front of an epic landscape, distortion with the wider angles is a good point to keep in mind. Perhaps I'll have to invest in the 35 G 1.4 or 1.8 sooner than later!

  • @sols9449

    One thing I learned over the years. You have to have a back up of everything if you do weddings and events. Backup flash back up 24-70 is a must. So you can get by on a 35 as a backup. But there will be times when you need to go wider than 35! So even a variable aperture or an F4 version. Another option and what I prefer is having a 24-70 and then a 16-35. These lenses are the lenses you can do a whole job with so if you shoot portraits with a 70 -200 or an 85 mm you don’t have to have a double of those because you can always shoot portraits with 24-70 or a 50 or 35 in an emergency. I do love the 35 for other reasons though and it is a backup do it all lens but again sometimes might get tight.

    • @ChrisHagan
      @ChrisHagan 3 місяці тому

      You're absolutely right. Before I sold it, I used to carry the kit lens 28-70 around as a backup since it was so small and light. When I film weddings, I tend to go with the 35-150 and use the 24-70 as a backup for it.

    The 35mm focal length on full-frame cameras has been my favorite for one-lens/one-body situations. I have used 35mn f/1.4 on Leica rangefinders and 35mm f/1.4 on Nikon SLRs. I akso use 35-70mm and 28-70mm zooms as backups to my prime lenses.
