What Next? 5 Love Language Challenge Finale
YOU DID IT 💕
Now that you completed the 5 Day Love Language Challenge, here are some questions for you:
What surprised you? Did you like one of the love languages more than you expected? Did you find yourself NOT wanting to do any of the assignments? Why not?
How did your partner respond? Was it how you wanted? Do you want to integrate any of these into your regular routine?
Now it's time to talk to your partner to learn what worked and what didn't. One of the best ways to discover your love language is to simply provide it and see what happens.
Most of all I hope you had fun with this, and that it started some new conversations to help you gain some insight into how you like to give and receive love❣️
You can always go back to the Playlist if you missed a day, ran out of time or need a little refresher.
This challenge is based on the research of Dr. John Gottman as well as Gary Chapman's book, The Five Love Languages, and my book, Love Is an Action Verb.

Gift giving--what if your partner wants NO gifts? Gift giving is NOT one of his love languages.

No worries, this challenge is for fun and for education, so if your partner doesn't want gifts, it sounds like focusing on one of the other 4 love languages would be a good idea. Thanks so much for bringing this up because it's a good point. Not only do we have preferences, but somesimes aversions as well, which is very good to know!

Since I'm married to another couples therapist, many people think that we do all the things we're supposed to do all the time, but news flash, we don't 😊Even though I created this challenge as an educator, I also completed it as just a person in a relationship trying to be a better partner, and I learned a lot from it. The first two days were the easiest for me, but the end of the week proved to be more impactful. I definitely had the most fun GIVING GIFTS. This surprised me, but it was just such a joy to show up with little things for all my family members when they didn't expect it. But it also required extra planning that obviously wasn't necessary for Day 1 and Day 2. Acts of service took the most internal struggle for me, and tbh, quality time hasn't happened yet. We had house guests the day of the challenge. Maybe it's an excuse, but I didn't make it happen. I'm committed to looping back so we get the full experience of all 5 days. What I liked most was the community aspect of everyone sharing what they did in the comments and supporting each other.

I hope quality time with myself counts because that is what I have gotten today and it feels truly lovely and rewarding. No doubt that if I had a partner I would make sure to enjoy some togetherness as a great opportunity for deepening intimacy, closeness and getting to know even more my significant one. I have always loved those moments! Again, thanks for the challenge!

Quality time with ourselves might be the ultimate challenge as self-care is challenging in an entirely different way. I try to go outside and just sit on my patio and do NOTHING. Now that I'm thinking about it, it's like giving oneselsf undivided attention! Thanks so much for sharing this and for finding a way to make this challenge work for you 💕

Absolutely! It feels exactly like that. Giving myself undivided attention so I know what it really means to be with another being and be able and willing to offer this type of attention that can be not only regulating but also healing. We all long for it, it is a very human need that we all have in common. Thanks for your prompt and insightful responses and for guiding us through this beautiful challenge. I wish you well.

We scheduled time to complete decorating the front room of our house. This was a task we had both avoided because it could require that we each needed to removed some meaningful personal items & could have resulted in a disagreement. However, building on our previous work this week, we focused on creating agreement & the finished product is one we both enjoy.

Done ✅ Okay, so this one was more difficult for me than the first two! My love language is absolutely Acts of Service (as you probably already know from the titles of my books and workshops and retreats and blog posts etc etc). But, I realize this is my love language for RECEIVING love, not necessarily giving. It was harder for me than I anticipated to give Acts of Service with selfless generosity. First I was planning to walk our dog for the late night walk, but decided I didn't want to do that for selfish reasons ... I'm a morning person and by 8 PM I'm brain dead and tired and feel annoyance at anything that requires me to be vertical. So I decided not to do that one. Then I was thinking about cleaning out my husband's office. I got super excited about this idea and started to look at my schedule to figure out when to do it. But THEN I realized when I was honest with myself that cleaning that space would be more for me than for him. In fact it might not be so respectful if I threw away things he wanted to keep. So I finally decided to make him an omelette. I admire so many of my friends who have this nurturing demeanor when they prepare food, and it's not like that for me. For me, cooking is a chore and I usually rush through it even if there's no rush at all. So this morning, I had some time and made this huge garden omelette with all the veggies in our fridge and he was so happy when I surprised him with it. It was really lovely for both of us. He asked what the occasion was and I said "It's Acts of Service Day" and we both burst out laughing. It's a bit ironic how helpful it is for me to be doing the challenge that I literally created. I'm so grateful for community! As all of us learn together it's soooo much easier than those more familiar feelings like self-blame and doubt.

Have you heard the expression "Actions speak louder than words?" If this concept resonates, Acts of Service might be your love language. Doing nice things for each other helps us feel valued and more like a team as we all manage the obligations in our lives.
