First Time Using a Firewood Processor: Road Trip to Metsa Machines
I have never had the opportunity to operate a firewood processor in my life. I've only used log splitters. That changes today when I go visit Metsa Machines in Merrill, WI. I never imagined an opportunity like this was less than an hour from my house, so it was an excellent opportunity to see what Metsa Machines and the Japa firewood processors have to offer for my firewood operation.

It's been almost four years since I purchased the Kioti CK3510SE and I've only had one 3-point attachment on it since - the carry all. It is finally time to make the change and add a box blade. We also added the hydraulic top link, which is a must!! This is how you install a hydraulic top link on a compact tractor. Plus, it is worth it to purchase the "better box blade." Such a Bad Time of Year for No A/C! Can I fix it?

The latter half of July has been extremely warm and humid. Dew points in the 60s - 70s with highs close to the upper 80s results in very sticky conditions. I'm officially in the IBC Tote Firewood Game: ua-cam.com/video/w3aN-yMNZMM/v-deo.html I never thought I would buy this much pre-split firewood, but the numbers actually work for sales in the firewood road-side stand. Firewood Business Game Changer - Finally Picked Up IBC Totes!
Переглядів 9675 місяців тому
IBC totes have been a hot topic for firewood business owners for a few years and I have been holding off. Mainly, they are too expensive. The typical market around here in Northern Wisconsin is anywhere from $50 - $80 each, which is too rich for my blood. I finally was able to get my hands a bunch of totes to use for my firewood business. They really are going to be a game changer! 🐦 Links: Web...

As add on comment if you could do video on this subject if it is a valid issue I would appreciate a how to video on this subject. Very helpful ideas keep up great work.
My one very important question and comment is this. I noticed you have not touched on mitigation of static spark control in your system using plastic pipe. I could be wrong so please feel free to correct me as I am presently just planning out my shop dust removal system and thought I read something regarding wrapping the piping with copper wire and grounding the entire system to prevent possible static explosion of dust.
@@johnatosoff I did not find it warranted to worry about it. I believe Stumpy Nubs and other channels have done videos on the subject.
Thanks for the video! It was great having you come visit.
I would love to have a set of them
Very clean looking system.
Do you have these in stock (100 count)?
@@jerrywayneray yes!
These processors are great machines. They are fun to watch, and I am sure fun to operate.
Gotta love their machines!
Good video wish I could afford one. So hows the business are you getting enough work to keep you busy? I just started selling bags that contain 1/6th of a cord can deliver in a pick up and move anywhere with a dolly no mess or coming to pick up getting 70 plus deposit it even has a flap so can go inside or out Dan at back 40just showed it anyway good luck and merry x mas
VERY SMART, I LOVE YOUR GO GET IT SPIRIT,.. I HOPE YOU CONTINUE TO DO VERY WELL, YOU DESERVE IT,. NOT TO HARD WORK, AND SMART THINKING PRODUCE GREAT REWARDS,...
I made similar with WoodPrix instructions :)
I got my bags from globe bags I bought 400 bags and they are absolutely terrible quality they ripped so easily! Stay away from those!
Where do you purchase your bags from if i might ask?
@WilleysFirewood A local supplier and manufacturer. I have them for sale on my website. www.outdoorsengineer.com
New subscriber here from Maine. Great video.
Still find it hard to believe that I watched this entire video and...actually found it entertaining. Great presentation skills, outstanding videographic skills, nice flow just great work (on the evolving firewood enterprise as well!). FYI, to other viewers, this guy's price on his mesh bags is much lower than Wolfridge, the supplier! Coincidentally or maybe not, but ironically (since I'm located in the 'burbs, O.C. Calif), a couple of neighbors suggested that I start selling firewood, due to quickly and unintentionally accumulating massive amounts of firewood (mostly Eucalyptus - great firewood, Pine, Oak, etc - word spread to a large number of landscapers who just didn't want to bother dealing with firewood stores/merchants, disposal, etc). Bottom line, I just wouldn't have the patience so that's probably what makes your story entertaining, liviing vicariously through an opportunist's hard work, efforts (and "toys:!), Best wishes on your future growth, not matter where this leads.
looks easy enough
Nice vid sir

Just get to it good lord
youre leaving a pretty big elephant in the room... the entire business relies on the honour system.. how often has someone taken without paying, and how often has someone tried or succeeded at opening the little money box, im sure this system would work in my rural eastern canadian area.. but there would undoubtedly be some people taking for free and atleast once youd have someone crack open the box for the cash
All of the above. One time, when I used the Home Depot mailbox, in 2022 a person broke in and took $45. Secondly, majority of people are honest. When I had my old pallet firewood stand, I had much more taking without paying - close to $100 missing per season. In the year 2024, I'm approach $7300 in sales. I'm short less than $20. I attribute this to a few things - cameras, consistency of product, and professional appearance of the stand. WHen I had the old stand, made out of pallets, it screamed cheap and not professional. I had more people take more than they pay for. Now the new wood stand is much, much better on the good ol honor system.
Most people don’t understand the basics of ventilation, Having your exhaust air volume greater than your fresh air volume will cause negative pressure in that space, That’s why fans have CFM ratings.
Plan to buy a gen soon and have reviewed Gen many YTs. Your install looks and is great, BETTER than a Generac imo...including esthetics. Sound dampening seems impressive. Big thumbs up for moving shed away from house and burying cable under driveway. Few thoughts....1. Consider doing periodic and check listed, full load tests (monthly/quarterly) to help insure emerg pwr is available when needed. Also, train spouse or child on safe startup/shutdown should you be away...or become forgetful. Consider powering cooling fan AFTER gen is switched off...based on interior temp. Consider installing properly rated fire extinguisher or blanket very nearby or inside shed. I like idea of having low power LED utility light auto illuminate at night upon opening shed door. Also, a solar powered trickle charger to keep battery fresh. Better mousetrap-ish? Yeah, but at what price glory? Again, kudos to you!
Thank you so much. Do I need a controller if I only have the ER605 router and an access point?
You need a controller of some sort, either using the local hardware controller, or the software controller, which is free, hosted on a computer. The computer does not need to be connected all the time.
I just got a 2014 CS2410 w/640 hours, and the same seal just started leaking. Great video! Note: I think your recommended angled version of the snap ring pliers is actually smaller than the straight ones you used. I'm now searching for the angled equivalent. Oh -- and I'm just noticing that you apparently used external snap ring pliers. Have to wonder if internal pliers would've been easier.
Thanks for the video. Take 3 quater oil?
Tip for the filter clean. Someone already said blow it out in place then when it gets bad, Take it outside and your leaf blower is your friend. It makes quick work of blowing out the filter.
I like this and the original. Good ideas on both. Keep your back straight as long as possible.
Good on you bro. The overbuild channel. 😮
Nearly 40 years ago I built a house from the foundation on up. All the trim and cabinets were made out of Red Oak. It was a job but my Dad called it the Gingerbread house as I over built it all. All the trim and flooring and all were made out of Red Oak I got that were only straight lined one side and surfaced 2 sides. Used a Folly Bell saw to mold the stuff. It was a really satisfying thing to do.
Hey thanks, looking to get a splitter soon and just wondering about the bark build up, I like the speed of the machine a lot, it’s the fastest of any that I have seen so far
For the price point, not much better you can get!
Do you get frustrated with the guide system they have for the wedge on the machine with all the bark build up ?
To be honest...I don't. I don't find it to be that big of deal to clean it out. After a round of splitting, I extend the wedge all the way, which is typically enough to get in and break that material loose. And a couple wipes down the hole and for the most part is cleaned up. A stick or screwdriver could help as well. Thanks for being here!
Yes, I think you are right, from the research I have done, the County Line machine seems to give the best bang for the buck.
I have also looked at RuggedMade, NorthStar by Northern Tool and Brave Log Slitters
I do a little firewood but you show how to make it a real business!
Wouldn't it be wonderful to find a bag made of hemp to alleviate the caustic plastic. Good video
Thank you. Lot's of factors. I'm sure the poly propylene bags are great as they decompose in a few months.
From a consumers perspective, Different color bags for different products would be very beneficial. To alleviate mistaking one type from the other.
I went to bagging this year did about 12000 bundles
Wow!! That's a ton!
Look like good quality bags👍👍
Sure are!
Your dog is a firewood thief, I may be reaching out to you in the future because what I currently use fall apart in the sunlight.

Thanks for sharing the info on the difference between the bags. I had no idea. My son and I are just getting started and we are thankful for your channel.

Maybe attach a QR code to your firewood roadside stand for Venmo and Zelle or Apple/Google pay so your customers can pay you direct if they don't carry cash. This would also alert you to a purchase so you can restock during the busy season much sooner.
Hey! Not a bad idea about Zelle. I've had Venmo and Paypal for a couple of years now :)
Nice work Mitch!! You do nice work with the box blade. I wish I could be that efficient but I guess it's a learning process. Keep up the good work 👏
Really good video. I'm just curious, how to do prevent theft from wither the roadside stand or the money box?
@Kiran_UK I have a few cameras out by the stand, which I'm sure helps a bit, ua-cam.com/video/ADYUidI6M_w/v-deo.html I also have a pretty strong pay box from The Honest Honor Box. I have had a person break in and steal about $40 in 2022, but at that point it was a cheap locking mailbox. Overall, people have been fairly honest. I'm only short $19 worth this year on almost $7000 in sales. It was worse in past years when I had the uglier pallet stand. This more professional looking stand i whole heartedly believe has contributed to doubling my sales and more honesty.
Nice job Mitch! That’s crushed granite, don’t think he’s able to get crushed limestone. The granite packs well but over time the sand just washes away.
Thanks! It's actually just regular gravel for our parts. Northern Wisconsin was run over by a couple glaciers a couple years ago, which deposited loads of river gravels and sands. That's our primary source for stone and gravel. Near Wausau, WI there's on of granite, both red and blue. I did a job a few weeks ago that was all red granite :)
I love this! Great content and commentary. I am a fan of driveway work,! Please share more!
Thanks, will do!
A land plane and a hydraulic top link really make for a nicer job. A hydraulic side arm would only add to the ease of the job! Tim in northern TN
It's on my mind! That would constitute another remote!
Great idea, but you're still picking up and moving the cut sections. I need to come up with a good way to build an extension so the cut sections can be rolled to the splitter?
Great idea! I've put some thought into your suggestion, and haven't figured out a way to make it happen.
Try best plans for woodworkers. WoodPrix.
Overall the preference over the long term should be huge. The pleated filter has a large increase in filter surface area. Further most of the dust and chips will never reach the filter that will remove dust too small to see. A quick blow down from the outside and the filter will be cleaned while sealed and the 5 gallon pail is easily emptied. The same sized Donaldson filter is much more affordable but because it is an air filter built for a truck is designed to filter from outside in and not inside out. This would mean that blowing to clean from the outside may not work as well
There's too many benefits to list going this route. It's been a couople years now and I'm still loving it.
Very nice job.
Thank you! Cheers!
