On, OoruLabs, India's premier urban issues podcast, Sathya Sankaran, host of the podcast speaks with civic activist from Pune Ar. Sarang Yadwadkar around the human caused follies leading to flooding like many other Indian cities. But its geography has a story to tell as well. Sarang unpacks the situation and the roadmap to sustainability in the city.
In this conversation, architect Sarang Yadavadkar discusses the pressing issue of urban flooding in Pune, highlighting the failures of urban planning, the impact of climate change, and the political apathy that exacerbates the situation. He emphasizes the need for a comprehensive approach to urban development that considers environmental sustainability and the importance of citizen engagement in advocating for change. The conversation also touches on the misguided management of rivers and the necessity for visionary leadership to address these challenges effectively.

This can be a very big profit earning industry. Bengaluru has huge organic waste o like tree waste which coulb be turned into oxy rich pellets, organic wastes using big composting machines in few days, liquid wastes into organic farm slurry. Industry of trearing sewage water into potable water is mushrooming in countries who knows its value like dutch. Indistrual effluents ate being let out without bejng treated and emissions too. Read articles of hydrolysis of co2 and sulphur into acids are already available. Organic leathers, dry flowers into incense , so many. Why PM is not prodding such startups.

    1. The geology of Bengaluru is extremely tough for building multi lane road tunnels. Learn from the experience of Namma Metro tunnels from Sampige Road to Vidhana Soudha. Story is different in the Himalayas since the rock formation is entirely different. 2. BBMP can not handle surface drainage on roads during wet seasons. Can you imagine BBMP handling tunnel drainage? Simply impossible 3. The level of understanding of SAFETY in terms of Road user behaviour, emergency response (floods, fire and earthquakes, motor vehicle accidents), record of infrastructure maintenance, is quite poor. Please look at the plight of many fly overs in Bengaluru In summary, Bengaluru is not a candidate for major road tunnelling work. We are not there yet. Metro OK.

Can I ask a question? I agree with Mr Narasimha, we are stand for tolerance. But bengaluru is increasingly becoming a non-kannada city (65% migrants) and into a English city. Should we not link Bengaluru with the state that it is the capital for, Karnataka and Kannada, the official language of the state? Along with improving city's public infrastructure shouldn't we also re-link it with its roots in the Kannada culture (in other words, de-link with the cosmopolitan culture)? Do you agree it should remain a Kannada city? When you say you listen to the people very carefully, we say Bengaluru should go back to becoming a Kannada city? If so, how do we do it?

No one has full knowledge on anything. We are all concerned citizens who want to leave our surroundings a little better than we found it.

@@rajhans88 Road infrastructure has been completely chaos and messed up by Congress. Congress ideas are worse . they stopped NICE ROAD PROJECT. They even stopped peripheral ring road for 3 to 4 decades . About CONGRESS projects which are senseless. 1. FYI, Metro tunnel connect to entire city. So Tunnel roads are not conducive for entire city. whereas entire city road infrastructure is worst of worst. 2. Tunnels roads are meant to use only a few for certain smaller areas . 3. Metro tunnel doesn't not create bottleneck in the corner, unlike tunnels. Tunnel roads creates messy in the tunnel road corners. complete traffic jam in the Tunnel corners. 4. there are many more issues of feasibility Best SOLUTION are: Instead of new bangalore n 3 more ring road, the Congress wants only old bangalore. they will squeeze another 2+ crore population in this same old bangalore. Utter nonsense n newsense ideas of Congress

Build flyovers , extend metro stations, clear all the old lakes , save rain water. Give rain water harvesting service for free of cost for all houses and apartments. Give more discount on E cars and Scooters. Ban all the old cars , bikes and auto which is 15yrs old. By doing this we can have our Bangalore back like we had 15-20yrs before.

It is worth adding that the PRR that is being planned to be ready by 2027 will bring down the traffic to Hebbal by a very significant amount.

Have you heard of Braess's paradox?

    • @rajhans88

Braess's paradox: Adding one or more roads to the existing road network will counter-intuitively increase traffic congestion and slow down the overall traffic flow.

Yes. Good discussion. Timeline based Third party (multiple) evaluation of schemes should be part of the schemes themselves. The privileged People should learn reading data instead of unsubstantiated claims.

Reducing number of cars/bikes on roads should be a requirement for infrastructure projects. Not to increase number of vehicles in the city
