Studio One: Remove Unused Files - Delete Permanently
Studio One's "Remove Unused Files" is great tool to remove discarded takes and other unused materials from a Song Folder, but the "Delete Files Permanently" can scare you off selecting that option. This video runs through what that option does and doesn't do, what to do to make sure the files only get moved to the Recycle Bin, and a work-around to remove unused files that leaves your original folder intact until you decide to delete it.

Tame your mixes with Bus Folders in Studio One

Studio One: Make Guitar Sound Like A Bass
Переглядів 3,7 тис.3 роки тому
The question "How can I make my guitar sound like a bass?" came up in a Studio One group. Most answers were along the lines of using a harmonizer plug-in, or using Melodyne to convert to MIDI and then transpose, and even just 'get a bass', but here's a trick in Studio One you can use to transpose your guitar down an octave. A couple notes: 1) If you have sharp ears, yes this is a drop-D tuning....

Recreate "When the Levee Breaks" drum sound in Presonus Studio One with EZ Drummer
Thank you!
The fact that a version isn't aware that other versions might share audio files is tremendously stupid. All these options seem more like a fancy (and useless) form of 'Save as', unless I didn't understand them. In Logic, if you save alternate versions they are aware that other versions are sharing audio files and the delete unused files does NOT delete them, as it should be.
I'll take a look at that. The main thing for me was realizing that the unchecked option really is a snapshot. Under that condition, I would expect the Remove Unused Files option to ignore earlier snapshots. For alternate versions, I can see where keeping a DB of used files across several versions would be helpful, but, on a PC, I can imagine people doing backdoor operations that could corrupt the DB. Yeah, I'd have to find someone who knows the thought process behind those design choices.
To be fair, the suggestion to use the Incremental Version for Alternate Versions is my suggestion, not Studio One's.
Thanks! Nicely done.
Thanks for taking the time to explain this! What a rabbit hole..
You're welcome. I hope it helps.
I use only "Save as" and I do not dare to use save new version"
That works too. Anything that gives you a fallback in case something gets messed up or disappears is a good habit.
@@jhughsPresonusStudioOneTips I often record in comping, and copy the track complete and work on the copy. Studio One is king.
it’s their fault it’s so unintuitive
Thanks. It could also be possible that I still don't understand how it was intended to be used. But yeah, I would add the word "snapshot" to the non-incremental version option. The incremental version may have been meant to be used as increments by saving before you make the changes, but I agree with you, it's a tricky concept.
@@jhughsPresonusStudioOneTips yeah took a while for me to get it, u have to read the fine print carefully i was actually working on a project this morning and while on my break decided to look it up to see if i was missing something then i stumbled on ur video

I know that IR files come in different “sizes” and “resolutions”. Is there a particular spec for IR files to work with Ampire?
Not that I know of. I've loaded a few different IRs and they all worked.
Thanks Jeffrey! Im finding your videos super helpful, and i can completely relate with your background stories... id be embarrassed to show the sloppy mess of my earlier projects too! Thanks for sharing these helpful tips you've picked up along the way!
Thanks Jason. I haven't made a new video in awhile but you're kind words have motivated me to look at a couple more (How Versions work and ioStation pitfalls)... all based on mistakes I've made. Cheers.
Hi Jeffry,i send sidechain to other channel, everything is well but if i export my mix, then i hear very different sound more what i hear before i export it! What can be reason ? Btw i am using Studio One too. Thanks.
Hi Volkan - This video is about side-chaining into the ProEQ to overlay spectrum curves from two channels, so they only audio changes will be from the EQ itself. Can you please write a little more detail on what you're doing and I'll try to help.
@@jhughsPresonusStudioOneTips So basically, if I use Pro-EQ on channel x then i save my project and close the Daw.The next day when I open the Daw again and listen to my mix, the sound very bad on channel x because of Pro-EQ. I don’t know why.Can be may be because of updates?
@@vlkn.music.official That's odd. Are the EQ settings changing or do they still look the same as what you saved? You may want to join this PreSonus Studio One Facebook group and ask your question there along with some screenshot. facebook.com/groups/presonusstudioone

You're welcome. I'm so glad it helped.
how is this different from using groups and visibility, i keep all my buses up next to main, then use groups and visibility to show hide mixer channels, buses always stay up to the right
Great question. By "groups" I suspect you mean folders; grouping tracks is a different feature than folders, it allows changes on one track to be replicated on the others in the group. If I can ever get to a point where I get all my tracks mixed into buses and then can mix at the bus level without revisiting the tracks, then your suggestion would work fine. What happens to me, and I suspect others, is that while mixing at the bus level there's a need to revisit a track, even if it's it just to check settings. That results in scrolling back and forth between the tracks on the left and the buses on the right. For me, it's a lot easier to have the bus folders. Then, when mixing at the bus level I can have the folders closed, but if I need to quickly check a track I can open it right there from the bus channel, check or change as needed and reclose the folder. The downside I can imagine is if I want to see all my tracks and buses at the same time; then the buses would be intermingled with the tracks instead of all to the right. Anyway, your method is perfectly fine, but maybe give bus folders a try and see what you think.
@@jhughsPresonusStudioOneTips that makes sense, you can control visibility at the source while adjusting the individual track and then close it from the same spot. I use groups, on the left side, and uncheck everything except visibility, so buses always stay up next to main (buses holding most of the processing), and show/hide groups to show hide all the mixer channels and tracks simultaneously, I still have to keep going to the left to change group visibility but I don't have to scroll through all the tracks. bus folders are cool but I'd get mad confused with buses all scattered through the whole track list
@@shatteredsquare Cool, I'll give that a try. Thanks.
this great........on my new track though the transpose choice isnt there????? can you help?
Hi Dan - You have a clip selected and have the Inspector window (F4) open? At 0:55 I show how to pull up the transpose option. I expect it's on all versions of Studio One, but maybe not. I'll check on that.
Thank you Jefrey!Very nice explanations for Studio One that i hope will help me cause i mess it all!
That's okay. Making messes is part of the learning process. Hang in there.
Can you add amp sims to ampire as well?
I'm fairly certain that in all the amp simulator packages, the amps and stomp boxes are hard coded. That said, experiment with the available cabinets, they change the tone more than I expected. I used to think the cabinet didn't much matter, but now appreciate how much the cabinet and speaker choice makes (in the physical world) and that carries over the virtual world.
Great video! THX!
Great idea 📌
great one thank you
So many things just clicked for me omg tytttttt
Glad it helped. Quick note: When I made the video I didn't yet realize that you can just click the "Sidechain" button at the top of the ProEQ window to select a channel to sidechain; MUCH easier.
This is great! First video I’ve seen of yours: Would have loved this 10-15 years ago before I wasted I don’t know how much time watching UA-cam videos and rearing forums back in the day everyone would just tell you, “Use your ears!”. Lol. I’ve actually thought about developing a compressor plug-in that had a visualizer that really showed you where and how your signal was behind affected at each transient, but just never set aside the time. Nowadays, I’m pretty familiar with the ends and outs of it, although especially with some of these plugins modeled after old analog gear that don’t have a great UI or clear indicator ranges on the settings, I still can second guess myself if something feels off. Haha. So even now, this type of thing is very useful. Good job.
Thank you. Yeah, something about compressors is intimidating, or seems harder than it is. Part of it is poor explanations, which initially resulted in me thinking attack and release where how long it took the compressor to turn full on or full off after passing a threshold; whereas, really it's a more of a slope between full on and full off. And you're right, the classic "Use your ears" doesn't help when you're not sure what you're hearing or supposed to be listening for. First you have to understand WHAT you're hearing THEN you can use your ears. Thanks again.
I never messed around with Scope. Interesting to see what it could do. Thanks
Thanks!
Some great tips, thanks for sharing!
This is awesome!
if u think this is crazy wait till you see how bitwig can let u automate the EQ to react to the sidechain audio signal. u can duck certain frequencies automatically and u can shape the eq ducking. as a bitwig user i'm trying studio one, and that's the one feature i'm lacking to make it viable. if anyone knows if studio one can do this and how do let me know :)
Thanks. Yes, check if you are running Studio One V6, which has both Dynamic EQ and SideChained Dynamic EQ in ProEQ3. Gregor describes it beautifully in this video: ua-cam.com/video/BMpP-9G0ISs/v-deo.html Happy mixing!
@@jhughsPresonusStudioOneTips thanks so much. This was the last feature I needed to become a S1 user :)
Or just ALT+X
Good point. That splits on the selected track at the Locator. For me, I'm usually cutting a bit earlier than where I am in playback, but just found myself using Alt-X the other day. It's a helpful tip. Thanks.
You can sidechain by pressing sidechain button on the EQ and selecting which instrument you're looking for. No need to go to your other mixer channel and press send.
Thanks for the tip. I'll look for a way to add a note to that effect in the existing video.
Thanks man

Thanks a lot it really worked just before the performance by watching your vedio
Thanks. I'm really glad it helped
Thanks mate. I was exactly same. haha
Such a useful video. Thanks buddy!
You probably should use your hearing in relation to compression
You're right, your ears should always be the final judge. The purpose of this video is to help beginners get beyond the mystery and intimidation of compressors. Even though many beginners may understand what threshold, attack & release are, the challenge is in understanding what a 10ms attack vs. a 20ms setting do in relation to, for example, a snare hit. My hope is that this video encourages new users to play with their DAW in general, and in particular play with a compressor and use their eyes to help them understand what they are hearing as they experiment with different settings. Then, when mixing using their ears only, they'll have a better sense of what to listen for when adjusting a compressor.
This what I had to as well then start training my ears to hear those differences
Jeffrey sharing some useful tips on these videos. I'm grateful for ur channel.
hello master I have Studio One artist and I haven't found how to display several adjustment plugins at the same time as soon as I turn on a second one the other goes out it's a shame because it's not practical it is better to sometimes have several plugins in front of you to make simultaneous settings do you know if it is possible and how do you do it thank you
Hi Starck - Thanks for watching my video and asking a question. After opening a plugin, click on the "pin" icon in the top right corner of the plug-in window and it will turn blue. In this video, you can see examples of that at 0:44. After doing that, that plug-in window will stay open until you close it. I hope that helps. Happy mixing.
@@jhughsPresonusStudioOneTips thanks master, is there possible to size the display of the pluggins? Fatchannel so big that oversize my screen then I can't tune the bottom button? thks
@@starckwest6358 That sounds frustrating. I wonder if you need to change your overall graphics resolution setting. Aside from that, some plugins support resizing and others don't. For FatChannel, it doesn't appear to support resizing but you can click on the icon that looks like a single column table just to the right of the words FatChannel XT. That will display just one module at a time so you can click on the Limiter knob to access the Limiter knob. I hope that helps.
@@jhughsPresonusStudioOneTips thks very helpfull
Wow, never thought about that. Thanks for the video.👍
wow!
wOW!
Thanks!
Great feature! Should use it more often. For those who read this comment: Warning! masking is not always a problem! You should only work on de-masking in case if you HEAR A PROBLEM. Sometimes wierd combinations of frequencies create interesting and usable sounds. Mixing is NOT about separating one sound from another, it's about CONNECTING them into a whole new thing. Sometimes I want a vocal to mask some of the instruments, more or less, or vice versa. The only thing that is absolutely needs to be addressed in terms of masking is THE LOW END of the mix. And I mean not only the lowest lows, but also a low mid area roughly up to 500 Hz.
Thanks Alexey. Excellent points about masking.
How about studio 1 5 ?
Thanks. I'll take a look at that for differences. This focus of this video was to show how to quickly put your music on your iPhone without using iTunes in order to do the quick "car test".
You came from Cubase... I can tell
This is insanely helpful. Just goes to show that you're right. You don't have to shell out hundreds of dollars on plugins that yes, are amazing - but many times your DAW has the same features, and you just have to find them and set them up. Great stuff, here!
