Приєднався 29 сер 2020
Hey all my MidLife Shredders! I’m Bobby, this channel is dedicated to documenting my journey, getting on and staying on a mountain bike having just started in my mid 40’s. If you find yourself just getting started or love watching semi-old guys make mistakes, then you’re in the right place! I’ll be showing what I’ve been learning, places I’m riding, bikes and gear I’m using, and maybe a few nuggets of wisdom as I learn and experience this awesome community and shred-life of mountain biking!

Chattanooga Needs to be on Your MTB Bucket List!
I've been going to Chattanooga to ride since I started my mountain bike journey just a little over 4 years ago and it that short time I've seen the MTB community grow quite a bit. I've seen several new trails systems added, a bike park within an hour's drive and the support structure itself (bike shops, hospitality, food, etc) grow as well! I think it's easy to say that Chattanooga is becoming the new bike destination, not only in the Southeast, but across the United States!

These New Trails Surprised Me! | Smith Park MTB

I got to ride the new Smith Park trails near Nashville, TN on opening weekend and I have to say, I was a little surprised! Middle Tennessee is not known for having trails with enduro character and coming to this grand opening I was just hoping for something more like progressive XC. However, I was a bit surprised to experience what I would describe as mini-enduro trail offerings. And I hope tha...

300 ft. climb in a mile is a chip shot for a good ebike That would be low power setting on most. That creasy trail would be a easy blue run in Arkansas. I like the runs though. New trails = no roots yet.
I want to get into mountain biking and I live an hour away from this park! Can some folks please give me some recommendations on a good bike for tackling a park like this? Preferably not too pricey. Thank you
Also, at what temp does this become unenjoyable?
Answers to this are very subjective. If you’re just getting started I suggest getting a hardtail first to learn how to ride if you’ve never ridden trails before. And Wildside has some green trails but not a place I’d suggest starting out at. But there’s a ton of videos about what to look for in your first bike. But a hardtail is the cheapest entry into the sport. I’d plan on spending around $1k to start and definitely look at the used market on PinkBike, now’s a great time to find good deals!
Depends on your tolerance and the type of riding. For me, below 30 starts to push my limits but I’ve known to start a ride below freezing. 😜
Just explored Chattanooga’s mtb trails for the first time. Raccoon mountain is no joke. We started at the boat ramp and did the full clockwise loop. One of the most challenging climbs I’ve ever done.
Did you climb Live Wire or up the road?
@@midlifeshredderwe climbed Livewire. Only had to hike a couple sections, but still a serious challenge.
@@jmatarazzo18 Yeah, that's no joke. I've only climbed the hard road and/or shuttled. This is where emtbs earn their money!
Reminds me of trying to learn how to "pop" when jumping a wake on my wakeboard. Took a bit of practice, but once I figured it out, it made life easy.
I finally figured out to listen to that little voice in my head (now 53) If we have a 6th sense....that's it. Listen to it....something is telling you to not do what you are about to do....come back and do it again another day when you are good to go.
Awesome man. I have stood on that line many times debating it. I think the new drops at the Slaughter Pen skills park are a better practice for it. I just got back from Bentonville on Sunday. I would love to send that line.
Alloy handle bar is better than carbon.
Ha! Subbed! 'Cause I make the same noises jumping....
Right? I’m still baffled by those who don’t! Thanks for the sub! 🤙🏼
Thanks man! Great video and I'm taking a trip there next weekend! I'm lucky to have a less than 2 hour drive to Bentonville. Can't wait! I'm on a hardtail, so probably will stick to the XC trails, but I gotta try some green/blue flow trails for sure. Any "gotta ride it" XC trails I should go for? Hoping to find some awesome trails I can do 1 day ride trips 0n the weekends. Tech Gnar looks like my cup of tea! Camping at a site north of town.
Honestly, if you like Tech Gnar, then a lot of Slaughter Pin and Coler you can do because there’s a lot of flow trail options. For XC, Family Flow and Oscars Loop is a must a Coler! Traverse Loop out at Handcut Hollow is great too!
Headed there Friday for the first time. Thanks for the video
Enjoy! It’s a blast!
Sun up to sun down
i’ve heard from a lot of people and from BMX to always pull on the handlebars at the end/bunny hop. is that accurate or is it actually just standing up and using your weight/inertia and gravity? or do you always pull up and bunny hop? this is my biggest confusion and no one ever answers it
I’m no expert but what I do know is every jump is different so your technique has to adapt to the jump. But I will say the standing up technique works for about 90% of the jumps I do. This incorporates some of the bunny hop motion. The handle bar pull to me is more to help you clear a jump if you don’t have enough speed to clear it. You pull up and then push forward to make sure you get your front wheel down first. But I’ve rarely used the pull.
Great video...New Subscriber ✌
Thanks for the sub, welcome! 🤙🏼
Can you rent bikes here or not? I want to start mtb but I don’t have any bikes and I live in the area.
You can, try Ride615.
@@midlifeshredder thanks 🙏
Great video. Headed there this weekend!
Send it! 👊🏼
i like nutty buddy more. im not a huge jumper so i dont hit all of the jumps, the approaches are nicer and the flow is faster for me. also its a lot closer to the parking lot LOL
Never "one more time"!!! thats just the motocrosser inside me that hates those words i guess lol
Midlife guy, when are you available to ride these trails with me?
Group ride? 🤔 Something I’ve been thinking of.
@@midlifeshredder A group is fine, I'm up for either, just want to ride with someone who knows the trails well.
@@millerman692 I don’t live in the area. There’s a Chattanooga MTB group on FB, May want to connect with riders there.
Try larger diameter gips and higher rise bar. I use larger grips and its helps me because I have large, wide hands. High rise bars are what you need. Deity makes some very nice large grips and bars!!! Live fast!! Die last!! 🤟😎
Rev Grips saved the day. 👊🏼

Hardest part for me is not bending my knees, it's doing my head in. It's a really really bad habit thats worked it's way in from my skateboarding days. Trying to rewire the brain and body into a whole new movement and to straighten my legs instead goes against everything i thought i knew about jumping, but its totally different on a bike. Ive got the entry and take off part down, its just keeping the legs straight, i have no idea how to fix it as its just so embedded. Good stuff bro. Repetition, repetition, Repetition. 🤘
Very true. And the older you get the harder it is for the fear to be shoved aside. 👊🏼
:Stand up"is the best advice..for its simplicity..but it's not the whole story of the jump technique. Watching your jump from the side it seems that you were not pushing the bike into the jump face enough with a downward thrust through the pedals and handle bar. Just my two cents.
Unfortunately I didn’t get a good off bike shot of when it was clicking. But like every skill, you don’t master it the first time out.
SEND IT............
E-bikes are just sad! Unless you have a disability, you do not need an E-bike.

Hey fellow midife rider here. Thanks for the video...really well done. I rode this place today and had a blast.
Yeah buddy! 🤙🏼
I run a renthal fat bar at 40mm rise. My stem also has a slight bit of rise. I notice a more upright position helps me. One reason I switched from a supersport motorcycle to a naked bike.
Ibwas the first generation of rock shocks , as I'm in my 40s. Kids these days think bikes will make them good. As in old Gen, it's the biker that makes the bike, not the bike makes biker. God I hate kids these days
Haha, every generation has the same sentiment. Can’t hate on em too much though, they’ll be taking care of us in a few decades! 😬
Boy do I know how that crash feels I have hit a few of those my self and just like you did not break anything . We don't have that much as for jumps anywhere local here but I still keep looking for some anywhere I go.
You had me until you suggested Rembrandt’s.
🤷🏻 It was good while it lasted.
I'll be in Bentonville for a few days working. Can you recommend a bike shop close by to rent a bike?
I haven’t had to rent any bikes in B’ville but I know there’s several. Just know most like OZ and Ebike Bentonville rent specific brands so if you’re looking for something specific shop around.
Where near Dalton is buzzards roost? I found one in Huntsville but didn’t see one near Dalton. It looked nice.
It’s just north of Dalton and east of Tunnel Hill. If you have TrailForks search for Rocky Face Ridge Park. Should find it that way.

I’m 41 and focusing on all basics again to kick bad habits. Purchase a DJ! I did best training since I was a kid.
That was a great introduction to Chattanooga. I've been wanting to check it out and this video has definitely tipped the scales for me.
Thanks Robert! When can I expect a visit? Haha, seriously, if you ever make it out this way, would love to show you around!
Is the Green trail really a beginner trail?
Yep, no features, at most just some rollers.
I was trying the same technique by standing up during the jump. It worked for a while, but not on the bigger jumps or gaps. To jump higher, you still need to preload and lean back first, then stand up. I’m not sure what the correct move is here, but sometimes I jump very well, and other times I can’t clear anything. In my mind, I imagine that you need to let the bike move slightly forward without your full weight on the kicker, and then, once half of the bike is airborne, you should jump as well. Because when you start your jumping movement on the kicker, you don’t allow the bike to jump higher; instead, you push it down with your weight. That’s why this technique works on small jumps and at high speed but won’t work on large gaps, for example.
The problem is every jump is different so there will be slight variations to every approach of a jump (which is why it’s good to preride and trail). But there’s common traits that can be learned that can be applied to your overall technique that should get you to where you want to be in your jumping game!
Is Walden’s Ridge on Trailforks yet? I couldn’t find it. Edit: found it.
👊🏼
I live in Chattanooga and love the riding here!! Great video, you hyped me up.
Thanks! I did my job!
Just checked out this trail this past Saturday (Aug 2nd) with my new Cannondale and my 10 yr son to boot with the heat!! Though we didn't have time to do it all, we had fun on the green trail with a little bit of the blue trails. Proud how well he did for his first "mountain bike/offroad trail" ride. We'll definitely be back to explore all trails!
Awesome! Glad you got to enjoy it. The rest will be waiting for you the next time!
My son is 13yrs old 5 looks doable for us. Anymore similar trails? Planning on giving there in 3 weeks. Thanks 4 ur videos very informative.
Unfortunately those are the only trails I’ve ridden in that area. Have fun!
Chattanooga has come a long way. If you get a chance, check out the Knoxville trail system. You can hit 50 miles of singletrack within 2 miles of downtown.
Baker is sick! I’ve ridden many miles out there!
What a great tour vid! Very informative. Some day... HA!
Thank you sir! Make it happen! 🤙🏼
I’d like to check this place out soon.
I'll have to head down (STL region) during our freeze-thaw months! I need to hit some trails in the Nashville area again on the way there or back like Lock 4, Hamilton Creek, etc... Definitely looks like fantastic eMTB terrain!
It is, and great for fall and winter riding.
Hey, it's SemiSendy! Trails look awesome. Thanks for the tour. As always, I gotta get out of my current locale.
Checked out Birmingham, Huntsville and Chattanooga this past Dec. Both Huntsville and Chattanooga are gorgeous. Eying this area for a possible move from NW Arkansas.
Anywhere would be hard to beat NW Ark but the Noog would be my choice in the Southeast!
Great job on this video bro. GA n TN is on my bucket list/radar. Since I’ve recently relocated in / around Bentonville, both of these States are a rock skip across the pond. Ok well not that close , but ya get the idea 😂. Take care
Bentonville is not a bad place to be either!
I want to check it out for sure, I visit family in Nashville every year but I wanted to get some good riding out there and this seems like the ideal spot.
I live in Chattanooga and am thankful, each day, for what we have here!
