We Need To Talk About Declan Rice.
Declan Rice needs to be talked about more. Right now, he looks back to his lung-bursting best, and has shouldered much of the responsibility across the new year for an Arsenal side looking to re-energize their 2024/25 Premier League title race. In today's video, we look at how he has returned to such elite levels, the tactical ripple effects of his recent performances, as well as providing a tactical analysis of how Arsenal and Mikel Arteta get even more from the Englishman.
After beating Manchester City 5-1 at the Emirates, with Rice being made man of the match, he deserves this video.
I delve into the tactics behind Arteta's midfield diamond, where Rice is best suited in a midfield with the likes of Martin Odegaard, Thomas Partey, and potentially Martin Zubimendi; why his relationships with Myles Lewis-Skelly and Riccardo Calafiori are so important, and where I see Rice's long term future.
On Wednesday evening, Arsenal defeated Girona in the Champions League 1-2, with goals from Ethan Nwaneri and Jorginho, meaning the Gunners qualified automatically for the round of 16. After beating Wolves 0-1 in the Premier League last time out, Arteta and Rice will be looking to continue the momentum as they host Man City on Sunday at the Emirates.
Who will Arsenal sign in the January transfer window? Reports suggested the Gunners had a £60 million bid for Ollie Watkins turned down on Wednesday, as they also look to players such as Benjamin Sesko, or Mathys Tel to possibly bolster their forward options in their bid to win the title.
This channel covers the entire Premier League, including Manchester City, Pep Guardiola, Manchester United, Ruben Amorim, Chelsea, Enzo Maresca, Tottenham Hotspur, Ange Postecoglou, Aston Villa, Unai Emery, Liverpool, Arne Slot, and the Champions League!

This frontline needs an overhaul we dont need any players that fit in. We need pure forwards that want to score goals ,love attacking. Players that "fit in" will just do the same as these players. That's the issue. Mikel is not an offensive coach. He plays in straight lines. Arsene was 4D in attack. To avoid Mikels poor offensive tactics .We need dominant trait players who you know are superior. Go and get Rafa Leao. Go and get the Speed and freak players. We need 3 forwards. To get all the pieces instead of 1 major. Sell trossard. Go and get sesko, leao, semenyo.
he still needs to get a bit nastier for me haha
Great vid! I think Rice is my favourite 6 at the club solely because of his defensive solidarity and I have no reservations about him on the ball. But I love him as an 8, carrying the ball and he’s maybe the best in the game at that counterpress. Big fan of just letting him do whatever he likes and having others fill in the spaces which is, I guess what we’re seeing at the moment😂
Yep. Think that’s the key. Give him the keys. And thank you so much. Appreciate the support ❤️
Master class performance from Rice against Man City. The juggernaut in midfield with Thomas moving into tight spaces. Letting the guys up top doing the big press pressure. Great watching this after yesterday’s game. 👍🏻
Thanks so much. Even more pertinent after the match yes!!
Rice is not what you think he is, playing 6 is not him he's not a revolving door like Gravenberch press resistant. Arsenal need a 6 because Rice can't play that role. He doesn't have the understanding.
This diamond overload is wotking well. For City I want Timber, Saliba, Gabriel and MLS Rice has been looking really good
Once a turncoat always a turncoat… I hope he never wins anything else
Who are you calling a turncoat ? Have you never changed your job ?
@@annewalden3795 I never changed my fcuking nationality… you mug
Rice is not there on the ball yet, but i have a feeling he will - the pausa, the calmness and creativity on the ball like the greatest players have. He is a cheatcode anyway
Alex from the different knock talks about Odegaard role being in danger as Zubimendi could do it for us. Let’s just say long-term he eventually leaves. Could a midfield three look like: Nwaneri - Zubi - Rice, Nwaneri at the tip of the diamond and Rice links up with Saka and White/Timber on the right side. Obvs every game calls for different tactics, but could we see that midfield 3, assuming Arteta still wants an inverted LB

Happy to find dis Channel ❤
Welcome x
Am i the only one thinking that Rice is a better 8 than a 6?
I think a left B2B in a double pivot is arguably his best role. But bottom line is he cannot be solely kept high and out the way, he needs to effect the game lower, offensively and defensively. That’s where you get your £100m value.
This is why Arsenal won't win anything
Harvey you are an idiot!!!! Rice is constantly passing backwards. His progressive passing his poor. He carries just to pass sideways. Your typical Brexit midfielder. Anyone can see the team plays around him going forward. Merino is a better left sided 8 and Partey and Jorginho are better 6s. $105 million Elneny. I would also play MLS ahead of Rice at left 8. Rice is nothing more than a more athletic Jordan “Sideways Passing” Henderson

He will become the best midfielder. Just watch

Thank you for your video and other videos. Do you have specific frameworks that guide your analysis of "Artetaball"? To me, it feels like you can unpack "Artetaball" so intriguingly, because you understand how to spot it, think it, etc. Would it also be a correct observation that you might say your ability to appreciate and unpack "Artetaball" is because you are a part of a minority who interpret football in a certain way (a minority which includes analysts like yourself, managers like Arteta and some others)? Just on that previous paragraph: I don't refer to it as Artetaball because I think Arteta is the architect of the football Arsenal as a result now play, because surely there is a convention (be it a minority) who understand football as you do, as Arteta does, etc. I just say Artetaball, because it's the only way I know how to attribute to a philosophy of football that (to me) seems quite distinct and uncommon, where the manager comes across as a bastion and pioneer for talking about football and expressing football in a way counter to what I think is typical around the world. Hopefully that makes sense. I remember watching a video where you explained that the style pioneered, for example, through Arteta, and resultingly reflected in Arsenal's style of play, is going to inform future manager's, analysts and enthusiasts in a way of seeing football that is breaking the mould. You said it much better, though. I feel like watching your videos, for instance, is how I am learning to think of football as Arteta does and as others who think like him, do.
Hmmmm, it’s interesting for sure. I think we as Arsenal fans have become much more analytically-geared simply because of the manifesto of Arteta as manager (as opposed to Klopp X Liverpool fans as more heavy-mental football consumers, for example). As for a framework, Mikel has certainly looked to build things from the foundation up-which makes total sense considered our relatively lesser ability to compete financially with the other elite clubs at the top of the game. If you could give some more acute questions in a reply so I know what it is you want to know that would be helpful, because I don’t want to tangent onto something unrelated. Thanks :)
If the saudis want martinelli please sell him.. get a 60mil and bring in a better winger
Rice as a 6 at Arsenal won’t work. Exactly why Partey keeps playing that role. Arteta’s 6 should be flexible enough to evade the press and not just pass from the build up stage. Also, Rice isn’t used to Arsenal’s high containing play in the opponents half. At West Ham it was more of a double pivot with a 10 ahead of them. At Arsenal it’s more tactical in each phase of play. Plus, West Ham defends for larger parts of games compared to Arsenal.. The only way is to utilize his energy and build in the left half space in attack as he’s doing currently
Couple of things: 1. Rice plays the 6 to a top standard. 2.When he plays there he is always going to have players close by, it’s why 3. Zubimendi compliments him so well. Gives him the build up, sitty partner, and when Rice’s legs go in a decade he’ll be more than capable of doing a more static, passy job. Just my opinion though. But it’s important to say our 6 always plays with players close by, and with players close by who, in possession take on the role of the 6 oftentimes too!!
I love this video. Rice is a Swiss Army knife on steroids, covers everything. What I also get from this is just how amazing Lewis-Skelly is. We don’t speak about him as a young player anymore…..is he actually our first choice LB now?
Thanks so much again mate, truly. Honestly, I started laughing when Myles took the ball in the first 30s and broke their whole pressing structure in the most laid back, unbothered way. It was the only viable reaction 😂😂😂 Think he’s super important vs a City press that can lack intensity at times on Sunday. Glad he’s available. I think at the moment he is, but both him and Cala offer vastly different things, and both also have a good chance of long term being somewhere else on the pitch (Cala LCB potential)
@ oh yeah I love Cala…..interested to see what happens with him. I just think MLS has exceeded all expectations for Mikel……Saka vibes!
For sure mate. Cant believe the speed of development!
People assume a double pivot must come from a midfield two. Any reason Rice can't be an effective 6 and double pivot with a Zinchenko or MLS inverting from lb where Rice can drive forward with runs and dribbles while the MLS type can ping the line breaking balls and metronomic passing?
Can’t believe people think he can’t play as a pure 6😂 I’d still put a good case together for that being his best position
@harveygration agreed. Arsenal fans can be an odd bunch. Last season Partey was absolutely finished and Rice was the 6 to take us forwards. Now Partey is irreplaceable and Rice can't play 6 to save his life. I love Declan in the 6. He doesn't have the deep playmaker range but as a sweeper he is the best in the world. MLS, White and Saliba can do the playmaking.
It's like they don't understand you can play the same position and have a different role
How many EPL clubs have you managed before? Can I guess?
@@JasonMyles-w3y so only current or former EPL managers can give an opinion on football? Seems a very strict qualifying restriction
Love the vid, Deccers is a unicorn profile, so complete, personally think he retires as at minimum top 3 holding midfielders of all time and I don't think he'll be 3rd or 2nd
Thanks ever so much. So glad you enjoyed. Hes just elite at so much.
Good video again, Harvey.
Thanks Leon🫡
@harveygration What do you think of the Ollie Watkins rumors? Would you take him?
Hmmmmm, not sure as of right now it would be the best use of funds. But would I take him? Absolutely.
Declan glaze is unreal

One player who deserves the glaze is Declan Rice. The most complete midfielder in the world.
@@EricaSkosanaWho's won nothing of worth...

His performance is very under the radar. People around him always get the flower but he delivers top performance every time
Declan is really maturing in the team as a leader. Awesome analysis Harvey. Weldone my friend
Thanks so much James ❤️
A simply incredible video, Harv. Thank you so much. This is why we all appreciate the channel so much. Your analysis and way you speak about the game is not just super insightful, but it’s done with a unique style, a real character and eloquence. Hope Rice sees this!❤
Far, far, far too kind. Cant thank you enough. That is exactly what I’m aiming for xx
he doesnt have line breaking passes, he is best as 8, might work as double pivot 6, but nowhere near single pivot party 6
Great vid mate, really enjoyed the analysis. Imo Rice is the best all round MF in the prem and one of his best qualities is that ability to be effective in a variety of roles. It gives us plenty of options depending on opposition, tactics, game management etc
Thanks so much mate, so kind of you to leave a comment. So much flexibility for sure. And if we sign someone like Zubimendi, that obviously gives Rice a complimentary partner, but it also doesn’t shoehorn us one way or another. Zubi won’t be a best fit for every game, the same way Jorginho isn’t. As we pass the bedding in stage, let’s see Rice take that top spot for world midfielders!!!
He's still at his best being a DM in a double pivot or as a lone DM in a counterattacking team. Playing him as a box to box takes him away from what he's really good at, which is defending. His immense work rate makes up for his lack of actual attacking ability, but it makes him even more tired and can keep him too far from a defensive transition. He doesn't have an eye for a pass and his in box presence is okay(?) so to speak. I thought he'd be capable of doing a transformation like his idol Yaya, but he's been far from an upgrade on Xhaka whose only flaw in this system was his mobility.
This gur runs on fumes more than 90% of the league on a full tank!! Hes an absolute physical monster.. unfortunately hes not a lone 6 in a top team, his ball progressing isnt good enough... Hense zubamendi incoming.. but off the ball hes the best.. covering space hes just a fucking machine... Hes a double pivot player or an 8.. simple
The one thing that surprises me so much about his play since his arrival at Arsenal is how good a of set piece taker he is. Idk how good he was at west ham if any but bar saka he’s genuinely our best set piece taker
He’s such a gifted ball-striker, and it’s gone under the radar for so many. Of course, none of us expected us to create set-piece routines where our takers drop missiles on a six-pence (😂), but yeah, it’s a complete myth that he’s not technically gifted. Guy is special. Want him to shoulder even more responsibility now.
I would spend the 70mil release clause on Sesko right now. We would always get 30mil back if he doesn't work out. Probably better than some quick fix 30mil addition.
In terms of winger, I don't know about Semenyo. Sure he could be usefull but is he winning us a championsleague in the future? I don't think so. Barcola is not there yet but has crazy potential. Nico Williams is the obvious candidate and would fit perfectly but it will be hard to get him even in the summer. My dream windows: Now: Sesko (immediate impact and still young and raw) and in the summer: Barcola (potential star for LW, does not need to work imediatly because of trossard). Should be within budget and realistic.
There are players we want and players we can get. Semenyo is probably more doable in this window then anyone else and we are absolutely short NOW. No reason why Barcola, Sesko , Mbuemo and Sememyo can't all be targeted over two windows. Not sure that Cunha is the right profile, and please let's stop talking about Isak - there's no reason why Newcastle would let him go.
Another good analysis Harvey - you still need to find a way to strap that hand down though! - The constant flicking is distracting.
We need goal threat and creativity. Which one of those does Semenyo solve?
First watching/listening to you , as a semi pro I really think people just watch football and have an opinion with no knowledge on football You sir make me feel like I'm not alone . Thank you for your beautiful work 🙏🏼🙌🏽
SEMENYO is the most realistic of the cheaper, quality, gettable forwards.
None of these are a leftback or a Goalkeeper?
Genuinely unforgivable if the club dont sign anyone this window, its an insult to the players aswell, they need reinforcements , act like a big club for once ffs, theres plenty of players out there that would join us in a heartbeat
In terms of how good the squad is i don't think we "NEED" a signing this winter. We can still win something but the plan for this season clearly hasn't worked out. So instead of overpaying for someone who is not a perfect fit, the owners might want to see what we got in the tank for this season and spend big in the summer instead. OBVIOUSLY the injury crisis makes a signing pretty much necessary (even just in terms of numbers, so everybody gets their proper rotation) but I understand the grand plan they maybe had if we had less injuries.
@ injuries are a part of football and you need to be properly prepared for them, what is Havertz getz injured, the guy could barely move after the wolves game, we gotta get some more bodies in to keep the squad fresh
