I don’t think it was a terrible performance. Main takeaways are Nwaneri needs more playtime, particularly while Odegaard isn’t available We’re obviously missing Odegaard greatly We need to upgrade Martinelli. Love him but I just can’t see him suitable for a team with the highest ambitions Trossard has obviously been great off the bench for us. As a starter, with large minutes, he’s not good enough. If he’s happy to be a super sub for another couple years, that’s great. I’m a Havertz fan, but we need another option. An out and out striker. Someone clinical. I think we still need another midfielder too. Unless we use this season to integrate Nwaneri and Skelly to see where they can fit and if they’re a solution (I think they can be). We’ve been very unfortunate with injuries and red cards. These things completely disrupted our flow and run. It’s not fair to judge recent form even tho we’ve still gone toe to toe with the other 2 best teams in the league. We have the whole team back soon and we’ll hit the ground running again.
Problem is what are we asking Kai to be? We can ask him to be a 'complete' centre point and float wide but 'float' wide not be attatched to those channels. Look at him vs Brighton, vs Spurs, that's an incredible CF. Period. Ode increases our tendency to play through first and second phases and access central pockets which I've criticised vs Newcastle--good stuff. I think lots of people are critiquing similar things but choosing to see the bigger picture differently. And yes, would like Ethan to get more mins--was so impressed.

The weird thing is, if we play the same formation and players against a team like Chelsea we might have a better chance. For teams that mostly play low-blocks, a more dynamic defense, with the likes of Zinni might be better.
I feel like we need a special attacker that will break the system to score. Our best players like Saka and even Oodegard are respected but I dont think they fear them cause I feel they can be nullified and we seem very player reliant when it comes to creativity and chance creation.

Kasim I felt Arsenal lacked energy and commitment at Newcastle .My diagnosis was that the players were remembering what happened on the last occasion they visited the ground and how Arsenal were robbed. Alternatively the team is playing too much football.

@kasimshaikh3750 You are right Sport is not predictable and a team can lose a football match just by being unlucky .I think the last season ( 2022 to 2023 ) was remarkable and perhaps Arsenal had a few fortunate results but this season the normal pattern is emerging and you just have to go with the flow . As a long term fan you just have to continue to offer support and trust that your team continues to play good football.
If liverpool wins the league with that aging team which doesn’t even play well it will be a big blow to Arsenal and especially arteta who has spent 700 million in his reign!
Arteta should have started jorginho over merino in this game, and pushed rice into the left 8 position. Partey moving into midfield causes isolation of saka so havertz plays next to saka to provide overlaps or underlaps since ben white and odegaard is not available. Declan rice pass selection as a 6 is too safe , so partey has to come into midfield. People should also realize merino is not a touch heavy midfielder rather he is dual winner who makes late runs and crashes the box. Expecting him to buildup play is not ideal. I feel the squad is weak due to injuries and when odegaard, white and timber/ calafiori are fully fit to play we will see a better team. Not replacing partey/ jorginho with a similar 6 will hurt us again this season more than anything. I expect merino to rotate with rice in the left 8.
i agree, after the game i felt its was just a game were we made final pass mistakes and couldn't enter their box. Its not a horrible performance, our fans just now expect a flawless football team n its not realistic in this league
There was a lot of space in this game which midfielders were not exploiting, I would love to see timber play in the partey role, with ben and calafiori on either side

Hi Harvey, thanks for sharing this video. I was so deflated after the game that all I could see after was poor performance from Arsenal. But, like you, I decided to go and watch the match again two days after, with clear eyes and mind. And to be honest with you, I'm more proud of the performance against Newcastle. What made difference in the game was Havertz role and movements in the first half. Isaak ran between the two central defenders for the Newcastle goal, we had the same scenario from Saka's low cross into the sixteen box in the 25th minute, but Havertz was not there to finish. The ball eluded Burn but Schar the second centerhalf cleared it. Had Haverts be in front of the first center half or between the two center halves, that was a goal or at least a stunning save from Pope. Bottomline, Newcastle played against Arsenal as they would play against Man City. They were not over emotional and gung-ho. I would have preferred Sterling to come in and play closer to Saka to create chaos and unsettle Newcastle rightside defense as I believed we had more chances of breaking through from that side than the left side. I hope the coach learned something from it and adjust quickly for the Chelsea game which I think will be different. Chelsea won't want to sit back, they would like to prove they're at par with Arsenal and that will be there undoing.
I think Sterling as a profile was perfect for the game, which makes his lack of inclusion frustrating because it points to a lack of readiness???? Not sure but a primed up Raheem would be big for causing a bit more indecision in the pockets where we needed to trouble Newcastle much more, as covered.

Every season Arteta produces a run of around 6 games which look as if the players are drunk. The title is already gone for this season. With the support he's been given, the Kroenkes will be expecting a major trophy pretty soon.
In attack, I really feel martinelli is only good in 1-1 counter attack. Other then that he need to improve in passing, crossing, 1-2, 1 touch, 1 on 1 shooting and a lot more. Nouri, Kulusveski, Nunes, Matheus Nunes, Semenyo,even Nwaneri can simply do better at that LW. So I not sure why he is still in the starting 11. Striker nothing to say. Is a mystery for not buying any. Havertz is good as a false nine for me. If base on Arteta tactic, We need a really strong and fast Center striker can received and hold the long ball and deliver good pass to winger. Havertz not good enough on this. If we have someone like Lukaku, Arteta tactic will be quite scary, striker can one time heading to the wing or hold back for false nine to progress forward. And keeper have more option in counter attack Merino only good as a back up for Rice at this moment. Rice playing style is over conservative. He needs to take more responsible in attacking role, and ready to have attacking pass and score a long shot, not just wait for defence. He has the ability to reach this. He needs to improve all these to reach Rodri level. Partey finally fit but not playing at his best position. Another mystery. Saka, he needs support from LM or full back. He can’t dribble pass 2-3 player. Jorginho or White or Nwaneri can only help him at the moment. Partey, Merino, didn’t work for him. Front six play style and attacking mentally need to be changed. We can’t rely on set piece goal only.
It’s a game of margin. Last two seasons, we have constantly been in the upper side of the margin, sometimes being lucky let’s be honest. This season, coupled with injury crisis and suspensions, we have always been at the lower side of the margin. We are not as bad as the results show, but the reality is that it’s really hard to catch up the points we have lost.

So obviously wt odegaard it ll be hard given arsenal is light in creative department, just like I said before that odegaard s absence will eventually catch up, but even when odegaard returns can you win the league with 4 cbs and 2 dms, probably not, so most teams will probably let arsenal have the ball and play the odds, despite the risk of a set piece goal. That's what bournemouth did, Newcastle, even liverpool, and probably other teams in future. You can theoretically win cl via defense but long shot. Arteta will be experimenting to fix this but while he does that probably more pts will be lost bc other teams seem like they are not experimenting, and seem to know their setup and are going for it, while teta still experimenting

Eddie Howe changed his tactics after the first 20 mins or so, to counteract Arsenals tactics, its as simple as that. You can bury your heads in the sand if you want, but Arteta just isnt as good tactically as Eddie Howe, and thats not me claiming hes a bad manager by the way, hes just not as experienced as Howe.
We may go on to play some incredible, flowing, attacking football this season but I feel the damage has already been done. The boys look like their heads have gone, maybe the last two seasons have taken it out of them. They’re flat, slow and short of ideas and you can’t argue with the results in the two games we’ve lost. Arteta’s negative tactics when we’ve gone down to 10 men haven’t helped either and he has to shoulder some of the blame. Bottom line, City win without their best player and we don’t plus we have too many ‘key’ players ( Trossard/Jesus/Martinelli) not performing, we can’t carry them and still expect to win. I love Havertz’s work rate but compare him to Isak who got one decent chance and scored……..he was the difference on the day. I don’t really care about the UCL but I’m genuinely worried about Chelsea away at the weekend
Chelsea and Nottigham game couldn’t have come in a better time we have the chance to win against them and put a gap between us in those looking for a CL/Europa league spot and gets us closer to City and Liverpool who play each other on December 1st. Bro Martinelli is a terrible winger on the ball. For a Brazillian he is a good LWB, not an inside forward or winger. He cant dribble, no step over when 1 on 1, no fake crossing or shooting to fool the defender, wont drop a shoulder then use the so called pace he has to get away from a defender. Jesus is a better winger than Martinelli simply because he tries to beat his man. at this point Martinelli has a better chance of scoring by being 1 on 1 with a keeper or though a tap in for a so called winger. Partey injury will arrive sooner than expected coz we asking him to stretch those legs more often and for longer sprints. I bet by xMas if he still plays RB he would be injured. Saka is better when ben white overlaps on this low block teams, he gets option to pass to white or cut inside. At what point will Kai be a consistent goal threat. He is about 6.4ft yet never in the box for crosses of the far post from either wing. I hope we lose everytime partey plays at RB, Martinelli starts after not learning how to dribble at least past 1 defender, Ethan gets in after the 70minute.
Martinelli was never a Vinicius or Neto kind of winger, he's more like Heung Ming Son imo. He's more of a threat when running into the space behind the defenders from through balls, not by beating his marker 1v1 with the ball. The best example was his goal vs Liv at Emirates in the first minute in 22/23 season. Odegaard & Cala's injury made Martinelli lost his support on the left just like last season, because Kai drifts more towards the RCM and Timber as LB is not as good as RB. Partey will be back as DM when Timber, White & Calafiori are fully fit. At the moment, we're just adapting with the injuries. He's an important part of the squad & RB is not a totally strange role for him because he once played as RB at Atletico. Arteta is maintaining the load on White & Timber because Calafiori is still injured. I think Partey wouldn't play RB if Cala didn't got injured. Kai played more as a MF in the last couple of games, especially when Trossard was also on the pitch. That's why you see him rarely in the box and more in Odegaard's area (RCM). Again, we're just adapting with the injuries.

These new players & i include Timbre need time. the best back four in the league has been disrupted more by choice than need. Three of that four could have & should have started on Saturday. Unless Ben White has an injury we don't know about he has to play, not just to defend but to support Saka. Zinchenko should be starting in the other full back role. The new personnel should be starting cup matches
In my opinion, I can only think of two reasons that make us beatable: 1. Arsenal are too slow and unsure on the ball, which causes us to appear passive. This makes it easy for our opponents to get back in their defensive shape on time, and for those teams to also pressure us into losing the ball cheaply. 2. Saka is overburdened with the responsibility of creating chances. I am no footballing expert by any means but we have to take a ruthless approach in our next transfer window if we want to win anything.
As I said over the summer, I would have liked some clarity at the club over the window - how our aims changed from start to finish, and the squad is certainly by no means complete, I think we all feel that. But there is also a level of excitement to that, but obviously this is put into context by our desire to win NOW. I think we were not 'slow', but the 'flow' was off vs Newcastle for the reasons in the video (balance issues, maybe not enough 1st/2nd phasing to bait those CBs out - both interlinked issues).
I would play Partey as a 10. He has better vision than anyone, can pass through the lines like no one else. doesn't have to run up and down as much as an 8. and he can press and defend. I found Partey's performance intriguing actually, in regards to how comfortable he looked on the left side of the pivot firing balls through--makes me question if we could have seen a rigid pivot, but him and Rice swapped round at any point? It's funny, because for a 6 he plays very much like an interior, but I think a 10 is a step too far! I think a sharper Jesus would have given us so much more dynamism vs Newcastle, and would've alleviated some of Havertz's functionality. Its a real shame.

Essentially, you can critique the same things, as long as that does not cloud your judgment about the bigger picture.
@harveygration Agreed, do you (as I do) see some eerily similarities to our play to the first half of last season? Even with Odegaard, ESR and Fabio we still had a very low zone 14 Access % and struggling with creativity. There were, as there have been this season, some very good performances even with the issues with decisions and injuries, but also some underwhelming performances where we looked disjointed. It wasn't until January where we seemed to have a more consistent starting 11, after lots of experimenting in several positions in the 1st half of the season. I also noticed many of the xG for and against stats were in our favour in the 1st half of last season as they have been at least up until the Liverpool game this season (at that point we were the best performing team) but the results didn't always go our way, as they haven't this season. Might just be me, but I feel similar conversations were happening this time last year. Great analysis as always mate! 👍
There certainly are some similarities, yes Dan. Last year zone 14 problems came from an Nketiah/Havertz balance probably being the wrong way round if I’m honest with you; a LHS constituted by space dominant players; and a lack of the all phasing Øde we saw from November onwards. This year the reasons are different, but it certainly is a little frustrating to move into a similar sort of cycle to a year before, whether we can control parts of it or not!! This video is delusional and so one sided.. All of your analysis while being good, is all based on what if's, nearly and what Arsenal did not do / should have done! Any game of football is like that at this level! Newcastle re-enforced the full backs and protected the centre halves whilst being an attacking threat, controlling the midfield, stopping your wide men and limiting Arsenal to 1 shot on target. It was a tactical master class and one that Arsenal will learn a lot from.. In particular your manager who was totally classless in his post match interviews. He just needs to take his medicine, learn from it and have plan B in the event of other teams setting up the same way as Newcastle.. At the end of the day Arsenal had no answer and outfought you. Arsenal looked very flat felt similar to last season loss against Villa, West Ham.
That's because Declan Rice played 6 in both games instead of Partey.

If liverpool wins the league with that aging team which doesn’t even play well it will be a big blow to Arsenal and especially arteta who has spent 700 million in his reign!
Arteta should have started jorginho over merino in this game, and pushed rice into the left 8 position. Partey moving into midfield causes isolation of saka so havertz plays next to saka to provide overlaps or underlaps since ben white and odegaard is not available. Declan rice pass selection as a 6 is too safe , so partey has to come into midfield. People should also realize merino is not a touch heavy midfielder rather he is dual winner who makes late runs and crashes the box. Expecting him to buildup play is not ideal. I feel the squad is weak due to injuries and when odegaard, white and timber/ calafiori are fully fit to play we will see a better team. Not replacing partey/ jorginho with a similar 6 will hurt us again this season more than anything. I expect merino to rotate with rice in the left 8.
i agree, after the game i felt its was just a game were we made final pass mistakes and couldn't enter their box. Its not a horrible performance, our fans just now expect a flawless football team n its not realistic in this league
There was a lot of space in this game which midfielders were not exploiting, I would love to see timber play in the partey role, with ben and calafiori on either side
As said, that lack of ambition to access central zones where you can hurt Newcastle IS a valid critique, and one I was very frustrated with combined with our tendency to not play through the first phase.

Hi Harvey, thanks for sharing this video. I was so deflated after the game that all I could see after was poor performance from Arsenal. But, like you, I decided to go and watch the match again two days after, with clear eyes and mind. And to be honest with you, I'm more proud of the performance against Newcastle. What made difference in the game was Havertz role and movements in the first half. Isaak ran between the two central defenders for the Newcastle goal, we had the same scenario from Saka's low cross into the sixteen box in the 25th minute, but Havertz was not there to finish. The ball eluded Burn but Schar the second centerhalf cleared it. Had Haverts be in front of the first center half or between the two center halves, that was a goal or at least a stunning save from Pope.
Bottomline, Newcastle played against Arsenal as they would play against Man City. They were not over emotional and gung-ho.
I would have preferred Sterling to come in and play closer to Saka to create chaos and unsettle Newcastle rightside defense as I believed we had more chances of breaking through from that side than the left side.
I hope the coach learned something from it and adjust quickly for the Chelsea game which I think will be different. Chelsea won't want to sit back, they would like to prove they're at par with Arsenal and that will be there undoing.
I think Sterling as a profile was perfect for the game, which makes his lack of inclusion frustrating because it points to a lack of readiness???? Not sure but a primed up Raheem would be big for causing a bit more indecision in the pockets where we needed to trouble Newcastle much more, as covered.

In attack, I really feel martinelli is only good in 1-1 counter attack. Other then that he need to improve in passing, crossing, 1-2, 1 touch, 1 on 1 shooting and a lot more. Nouri, Kulusveski, Nunes, Matheus Nunes, Semenyo,even Nwaneri can simply do better at that LW. So I not sure why he is still in the starting 11.
Striker nothing to say. Is a mystery for not buying any. Havertz is good as a false nine for me. If base on Arteta tactic, We need a really strong and fast Center striker can received and hold the long ball and deliver good pass to winger. Havertz not good enough on this. If we have someone like Lukaku, Arteta tactic will be quite scary, striker can one time heading to the wing or hold back for false nine to progress forward. And keeper have more option in counter attack
Merino only good as a back up for Rice at this moment.
Rice playing style is over conservative. He needs to take more responsible in attacking role, and ready to have attacking pass and score a long shot, not just wait for defence. He has the ability to reach this. He needs to improve all these to reach Rodri level.
Partey finally fit but not playing at his best position. Another mystery.
Saka, he needs support from LM or full back. He can’t dribble pass 2-3 player. Jorginho or White or Nwaneri can only help him at the moment. Partey, Merino, didn’t work for him.
Front six play style and attacking mentally need to be changed. We can’t rely on set piece goal only.
It’s a game of margin. Last two seasons, we have constantly been in the upper side of the margin, sometimes being lucky let’s be honest.
This season, coupled with injury crisis and suspensions, we have always been at the lower side of the margin.
We are not as bad as the results show, but the reality is that it’s really hard to catch up the points we have lost.

So obviously wt odegaard it ll be hard given arsenal is light in creative department, just like I said before that odegaard s absence will eventually catch up, but even when odegaard returns can you win the league with 4 cbs and 2 dms, probably not, so most teams will probably let arsenal have the ball and play the odds, despite the risk of a set piece goal. That's what bournemouth did, Newcastle, even liverpool, and probably other teams in future. You can theoretically win cl via defense but long shot. Arteta will be experimenting to fix this but while he does that probably more pts will be lost bc other teams seem like they are not experimenting, and seem to know their setup and are going for it, while teta still experimenting

Eddie Howe changed his tactics after the first 20 mins or so, to counteract Arsenals tactics, its as simple as that. You can bury your heads in the sand if you want, but Arteta just isnt as good tactically as Eddie Howe, and thats not me claiming hes a bad manager by the way, hes just not as experienced as Howe.
We may go on to play some incredible, flowing, attacking football this season but I feel the damage has already been done. The boys look like their heads have gone, maybe the last two seasons have taken it out of them. They’re flat, slow and short of ideas and you can’t argue with the results in the two games we’ve lost. Arteta’s negative tactics when we’ve gone down to 10 men haven’t helped either and he has to shoulder some of the blame. Bottom line, City win without their best player and we don’t plus we have too many ‘key’ players ( Trossard/Jesus/Martinelli) not performing, we can’t carry them and still expect to win. I love Havertz’s work rate but compare him to Isak who got one decent chance and scored……..he was the difference on the day. I don’t really care about the UCL but I’m genuinely worried about Chelsea away at the weekend

Martinelli was never a Vinicius or Neto kind of winger, he's more like Heung Ming Son imo. He's more of a threat when running into the space behind the defenders from through balls, not by beating his marker 1v1 with the ball. The best example was his goal vs Liv at Emirates in the first minute in 22/23 season. Odegaard & Cala's injury made Martinelli lost his support on the left just like last season, because Kai drifts more towards the RCM and Timber as LB is not as good as RB.
Partey will be back as DM when Timber, White & Calafiori are fully fit. At the moment, we're just adapting with the injuries. He's an important part of the squad & RB is not a totally strange role for him because he once played as RB at Atletico. Arteta is maintaining the load on White & Timber because Calafiori is still injured. I think Partey wouldn't play RB if Cala didn't got injured.
Kai played more as a MF in the last couple of games, especially when Trossard was also on the pitch. That's why you see him rarely in the box and more in Odegaard's area (RCM).
Again, we're just adapting with the injuries.

In my opinion, I can only think of two reasons that make us beatable:
1. Arsenal are too slow and unsure on the ball, which causes us to appear passive. This makes it easy for our opponents to get back in their defensive shape on time, and for those teams to also pressure us into losing the ball cheaply.
2. Saka is overburdened with the responsibility of creating chances.
I am no footballing expert by any means but we have to take a ruthless approach in our next transfer window if we want to win anything.
As I said over the summer, I would have liked some clarity at the club over the window - how our aims changed from start to finish, and the squad is certainly by no means complete, I think we all feel that. But there is also a level of excitement to that, but obviously this is put into context by our desire to win NOW. I think we were not 'slow', but the 'flow' was off vs Newcastle for the reasons in the video (balance issues, maybe not enough 1st/2nd phasing to bait those CBs out - both interlinked issues).

I would play Partey as a 10. He has better vision than anyone, can pass through the lines like no one else. doesn't have to run up and down as much as an 8. and he can press and defend. Seems a perfect fit in the absence of Odegaard, and for me he is wasted as a right back. What do you think Harvey? I tend to get crickets when i say this 😅
Couple of things here. First, thanks so much for leaving a comment! I found Partey's performance intriguing actually, in regards to how comfortable he looked on the left side of the pivot firing balls through--makes me question if we could have seen a rigid pivot, but him and Rice swapped round at any point? It's funny, because for a 6 he plays very much like an interior, but I think a 10 is a step too far! I think a sharper Jesus would have given us so much more dynamism vs Newcastle, and would've alleviated some of Havertz's functionality. Its a real shame.

@harveygration Agreed, do you (as I do) see some eerily similarities to our play to the first half of last season? Even with Odegaard, ESR and Fabio we still had a very low zone 14 Access % and struggling with creativity. There were, as there have been this season, some very good performances even with the issues with decisions and injuries, but also some underwhelming performances where we looked disjointed. It wasn't until January where we seemed to have a more consistent starting 11, after lots of experimenting in several positions in the 1st half of the season. I also noticed many of the xG for and against stats were in our favour in the 1st half of last season as they have been at least up until the Liverpool game this season (at that point we were the best performing team) but the results didn't always go our way, as they haven't this season. Might just be me, but I feel similar conversations were happening this time last year. Great analysis as always mate! 👍
There certainly are some similarities, yes Dan. Last year zone 14 problems came from an Nketiah/Havertz balance probably being the wrong way round if I’m honest with you; a LHS constituted by space dominant players; and a lack of the all phasing Øde we saw from November onwards.
This year the reasons are different, but it certainly is a little frustrating to move into a similar sort of cycle to a year before, whether we can control parts of it or not!!

Newcastle re-enforced the full backs and protected the centre halves whilst being an attacking threat, controlling the midfield, stopping your wide men and limiting Arsenal to 1 shot on target. It was a tactical master class and one that Arsenal will learn a lot from.. In particular your manager who was totally classless in his post match interviews. He just needs to take his medicine, learn from it and have plan B in the event of other teams setting up the same way as Newcastle.. At the end of the day Arsenal had no answer and outfought you. They have beaten you deservedly 3 out of 4 fixtures at SJP.. Give them credit please.
