- How do you start to sum up Arsenal's season so far? And what lessons can we take from their 2-2 draw with Liverpool on Sunday? The answer, for me: "thick skin". Let me explain...
Today's video provides some perspective, as well as an in-depth tactical analysis into the first half of Arsenal 2-2 Liverpool. Arsenal exerted control of the match where Bukayo Saka opened the scoring, before Virgil Van Dijk got Arne Slot's team back on level terms. Mikel Arteta's men responded with new signing Mikel Merino netting his first goal for the Gunners, before Mohammed Salah equalized against a makeshift Arsenal back 4 with just over 10 minutes to play. Arsenal ended the game with none of Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Magalhaes, William Saliba, Jurrien Timber, Oleksandr Zinchenko, or Riccardo Calafiori on the pitch.
I begin with how Arsenal's flexible build-up initially dismantled the Liverpool 4-2-4 mid-block, with particular focus on David Raya, Thomas Partey, Leandro Trossard, Declan Rice, and Benjamin White; before considering Kai Havertz's role, and Mikel Merino and Gabriel Martinelli. As well as this, I look into how Arsenal used Jurrien Timber as an out ball, before concluding with a monologue to the fans: why we should stick by Arsenal, and why the 2024/25 Premier League season should be one of encouragement so far.

Arteta was able to decipher a way to nullify Slot's tactics brilliantly. Once again showing that he is a top quality manager.....If Gabriel and Timber didn't get injured we would have won the game.

I love your views and point but one thing I noticed is we stopped playing when leading and that's an issue, I don't know if it's bcoz of the Injury we have and Martinelli need to be more clinical like Saka. We needs to start contributing a lot in putting the ball into the penalty box. Lastly I really enjoy Rice when he plays at that number 6 role.

Forgot to include my thoughts on this: I think the context of the second half makes it understandable (decisions, subs/injuries), but I think my analysis of the first half hits even harder if you take it in conjunction with Mikel’s post match quotes, saying “we should’ve played more in the first phase”. That’s where we were dismantling them. So it’s somewhere in the middle for me. We should’ve played there more, but we were still trying so much. Their equaliser comes from us being arguably a bit too brash up the pitch. We pressed high whenever we could. In the middle for me.

Great stuff, as always! I'm still seething at Arteta's reactive management. Arnie energised his team wth fresh legs, Mikel left his makeshift defence under pressure - not refreshing his offensive line up until it was too late! I reckon everyone else saw this coming too! I don't understand why Nwaneri isn't starting in Odegaard's place. I felt sorry for Myles being put in a position of responsibility for the Salah goal by his lovely pass to Brainfart! Speaking of Brainfarts, what is it about our Brazilian strikers? I suppose they'll be described (and excused) as "confidence players" - I loathe this expression.

I think the best thing about us playing in 'hard mode' is that we're discovering players and how to deploy them differently. The tactical layers we've added since Ødegaard got injured probably don't get added this soon if he were available.

Welcome back broski and on point again , I honestly think we have to remain focus and positive as I mentioned before there will many injuries this because of the many games player are meant to play , but the positive is that we'll have playas back and the opponents injuries will come up in the crucial part of the season and I'm not sure if they'll cope as fine as we did

Yep, it’s City. League is in a similar position to last year in the top 7/8 (bar Chelsea’s improved prospects); same goes with how we approach it in managing our squad

Great work - but one tiny thing id say is if your script is below the camera, reposition it so it is level with the camera. It’s a bit distracting seeing you look down again and again. I’d say either memorise the segment, record, pause, then memorise the next one, or have the script on the screen right where the camera is. Us viewers expect the UA-cam to maintain eye contact with the camera. Don’t know why, but it’s the standard. So deviating from that is a little distracting. Very minor critique as the actual content of the video is great, but an easy fix to consider maybe…
So how liverpool play is they often use the long ball to wingers (which they also used in pre season friendly vs arsenal) in this game arteta said I can do that to you too, and had havertz drift often to right to receive the long ball and try to overload that area with saka there too, I actually don't think it was that effective as havertz did better in the middle but it did cause some problems for liverpool. The saka goal was a long ball but more individual skill. In the end, both coaches canceled each other out essentially, and were conservative, which I kind of expected. Teta was conservative due to injuries, while slot still new and wary of the fact that arsenal grinded out results this season without not always playing great, and an away game. The one thing that was unexpected was how well partey did at rb, and how bad diaz was there. However, I hope this was a forced thing as an injury prone partey at 31 years shouldn't probably play at rb. Btw, since we are on liverpool topic, the goal that Curtis Jones scored vs chelsea that's a shadows striker goal. When arteta had havertz play in midfield last year and had him hang out in the box he wasn't a shadow striker, he was just a striker that would run back and help out in defense. Shadow striker is someone you don't expect. In odegaard s absence teta plays havertz and trossard as sort of a double pivot of false 9s, that works better bc it brings out strength of each player that you can use to your advantage instead of highlighting their deficiencies, which teta did last season

We do indeed have the Power and can go on a run and as fans we also like the players can develop a thick skin as we see week in week out the performances which, matched with the context of recent 10 men game-states and injuries this season, the fact we are still up there shows we're a proppa top club and its all still to play for

I do believe. And if we didn't have the injuries I believe we would probably be on top. I just don't know if we are going to get there and I have to be able to not let that affect my mental health. Hopefully in a few weeks we will have players back etc. anything is possible. Mostly I think we need city to drop points

I think the main reason we as a Arsenal fans are worried or may believe the league is over for us is because City are such a machine. It’s exhausting just hoping they lose or drop and points, they are supposed to weaker without Rhodri. Also, our indiscipline as cost us, no matter how much we blame the referees, we shouldn’t be giving them decisions to make.
They are human beings not robots so mistakes will happen no matter what, refs has to fair

Looking at the way Arsenal set-up now which is less inverting from the left back, especially the 4-4-2 when we are off the ball, do you think we might see a return to the fold for Tierney?
It’s certainly more conducive to him. But there are still massive build-up issues relative to Tierney that we would have to reconfigure for: keeping him more exclusively out the picture for example. He would be more a specialist overlapper in our system, which is no bad thing, but I’d want to partner that with a right footed, technical L10 if that makes sense. An Eze type for balance.

I'm so annoyed with how this season has gone so far. The team has shown signs of being so good but it seems the officiating is determined to undermine our efforts. Proud of how the boys have performed whilst facing adversity but the refs have sucked the joy out of football for me this season already. My belief in us winning it this year is being diminished by the game week just because of the officials.
Whichever way you look at it, it’s on us now to close the gap. We are lucky to have a group who tend to rise to that occasion. Let’s stay in it until January Mike. If so, we’ve got a shot.
As much as I want to believe, if we go and lose to Newcaste and Chelsea its over for us.

All the narrative will change soon rather than later. A proper title contending club can't rely on one scuard lack of rotation. Young stars are rotting in the bench & pegging hope on Havertz who's relying on luck to perform.
