August Education Series 2024: Black Coloradans: Health and Homelessness
Join the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless on Thursday, August 15th at 5pm for the next session in our 2024 virtual Education Series: Black Coloradans: Health and Homelessness.
The primary factors that lead to homelessness are the lack of affordable housing, healthcare (lack of access to, cost of), criminalization, and poverty/wages. In each of these issues, Black individuals historically have been, and continue to be, disproportionately impacted due to structural racism including policies that have restricted Black ownership, impacted health outcomes for Black patients, and provided lower wages to Black workers.
Panelists include Representative Leslie Herod, State Representative House District 8, Dr. Terri Richardson, Colorado Black Health Collaborative, Eric Tars, Senior Policy Director, National Homelessness Law Center, and Patrick J. Wilson III, Managing Director, St. Clare's Ministries.

Strong video. You present the conditions and futileness of traumatic displacement to nowhere, whether from unsanctioned sites, SOS sites or shelter beds. The only true solution is to create policies that address the crisis of continually allowing developers to prioritize high end units to the detriment of decent affordable units. Every building should provide a percentage of affordable units and every building should contain some ADA compliant units. Developers should not be allowed to "buy" their way out without concrete tangible affordable units being provided. Affordable rents and homes help everyone, not just the houseless. Affordable rents and homes help small businesses and communities. Housing is a human right.

from year of 1991 'till 2005 I'd walk from st.francis center to stout to just get warm on very cold days and medical attention when I needed it. I remember a lady by the name of Jo ann who'd always say Alabama I hope that someday you would quit drinking because it will ruin your health. If she saw me today she'd be proud to know that I have been sober for 7 years and now work with homeless vet at Aurora Mental Health. God Bless Stout Street Clinic. Michael George
