Over the next view coming years we will be renovating an old Swedish school that we bought. The building is beautiful, full of character and over a hundred years old. We want to restore this abandoned building in a way that keeps all the historical details and we will mainly be using old building materials to do that. Besides the school there is also an old barn that needs a lot of work and a b...
Lets Fix this Gloomy Farmhouse Bedroom | The Corner in the Dormer

So lets fix this gloomy farmhouse bedroom because the darkness and dirtiness needs to go! Last week I finished one corner that now looks very cosy, and today I am starting part two of our (massive) farmhouse bedroom makeover with the space that we have in the gable. This is the only part of the room that has lots of light, but it still feels dark because of the paint colors, so I want to change...

Hello Eva, the wax balls with cotton around them are earplugs, the company Ohropax also produces them in this way. Again so many interesting finds! It's always surprising to see the content of your videos. Greetings from Cologne Andy
Such a nice video again re-emphasising your love for things old and loved! Such value and respect for the past can only come from an unusually string commitment to history and quaintness.
So appreciate the time you put into your videos! The editing, the music, the content, well done. Thank you ❤
No one would have appreciated all of those vintage items more than you, Eva. I enjoyed watching you hang up the laundry; so glad to know you got your clothesline!
That's definitely true! Hanging some laundry on that clothes line was amazing! I do think that we need one of those round one's though with a pole in the middle? You see those things in movies.. I need one of those! It is going to fit more laundry too. I think that hanging laundry just creates such a 'homey' feeling.
@@EvasHomeVintageDIY Oh I agree! I want one of the rotating ones too.
Like the person before me I also thought that small glass is for eye solutions. I love seeing all of your little treasures and your delight in them.
Hi Melissa, thank you for sharing that!
The little glass, is an eye bath … very handy
Hi Wendy, I think you are right because a couple of other people said the same thing and I really did not know that! It's always nice when people share there knowledge about things like that.
Mangeln är till för att platta ut rynkor i lakan /textil . Som ett strykjärn. Man ska inte vrida ur vatten med den . Jätte skönt med manglade lakan i sängen 😍 . Kul kanal
Hi Stina, thank you for letting me know about the 'Mangeln'. According to Wikipedia it was uses for both.... so also for getting the water out and that's also what I learned it was used for when I was small. Maybe they are only used for pressing dry laundry in Sweden though? It would be interesting to hear if other people from Sweden know anything about that? Wikipedia: “A mangle is a tool that was used in the past to simultaneously remove moisture from washed textiles and to iron them flat. The textile was rotated between two rollers, the distance between which could be adjusted, which squeezed out the water".
The shot glass may be for and rinsing eyes with solutions.
Hi Barbara, that makes total sense also because of the shape! Thank you for letting me know! It's always fun to learn something new. I actually sometimes have to rinse my eye because of allergic reactions so maybe I will try it one day (first I will clean it though;)
it's so fun to see your curiosity and enthusiasm for collecting all the random treasures as you explore your new property. Displaying all of these things is what I feel turns a house into a home. Not weird at all.😻
Hi Erica thanks for the sweet comment, and I think that you are right and It's going to be a very fun and interesting journey to create a home with re-using lots of the things that are already there.
What you thought were bibles are psalm books, to sing with at mass or other Christian gatherings. Don't know if somebody else already commented on it, my bad in that case. I love your couple dynamic and your enthusiasm for this endeavour!
Hi, yes you are right about the books, I saw that too when I took one out of the box and i also think that we should keep at least one just because it's a part of the schools' history.
Your energy, and happiness in your treasures is a delight to watch!
Hi, hi, thank you;) that's really nice to hear!
What a beautiful building, I am looking forward to seeing what you are going to do with it.
Hi Deborah, I can't wait to actually start the renovation work and I am curious about how things are going to turn out too! We actually just bough a bunch of stuff, building materials and also some fun things like furniture and vintage kitchen cabinets and we are so, so excited to go back as quickly as possible to get started (we are back in the Netherlands right now).
You are very brave facing all the problems in the house❤
Hi Julia, well thank you... al though it could also be just insanity😂
I love to follow your adventure. And I think you should put the hanger in the hallway😊
Hi Gitte, thank you for the sweet comment and I am happy you are here to come along in the adventure with us.
I like how you style little vignettes.. this is how I decorate my personal space with little pockets of treasures. You don't often come across tatting and crocheted items, ( doilies )so those are special as are the linens and the 🎩 is very cool! Your enthusiasm and delight is so infectious!😊... I believe traditionally, that children were taught to read so that they would be able to read the bible. It doesn't surprise me that you found a box of bibles in an old school 🏫! Lastly, I love the empty frame on the wall because i do the same!
Hi Melinda, it's really nice to hear that I'm not the only one doing or liking certain things;) As for the bibles, those bibles could have definitely been used in the school for the children but there are also a lot more religious books that are all about mission work in Tanzania, Africa so I do wonder if there was a church that used the school-building too because the building next door also belongs to the church and the school was also used for communal things like gatherings so I should ask around a bit to find out more about that and maybe they had sunday school too right? Those kids I mean.
@@EvasHomeVintageDIY very possible about the church/ Sunday school. You are like an archeologist unearthing all sorts of cool/ historical time capsule items!!! 😊
The gray ”becket” was used to get milk from the barn into the house. The windows: is it there only one later of glass? There should be a extra layer of windows to put in during the winter to keep the warmth in and the cooles weather out, kind of insulation.
That long board to hang clothes on often was placed outside the classroom in the entry. You felt how the sun have a lot of warmth. Perhaps the house is lacking sufficient insulation and the house will get reallöner cold in the winter.
What is your Etsy shop called😊
It is called The Blue Dutchess. There is not much to it right now though because I just don't have the time to really get it going. It's a bit if a shame.
Beautiful ❤❤
Thank you! 😊
I love your keep choices! They are real treasures. It's terrific to see you enjoying this place and this process so much.
Hi Melissa, I do enjoy it so much! I can't wait to actually live there and just to turn it in to this amazing 'film/work' studio space.
Such a treasure trove. You look really happy in your classroom. And I would put the shelf back in the original spot. It looks great in your room but with your skills you could easily repiclate it.
I also feel so passionate about restoring things and bringing things back as they were in the past but I was looking at the little bit of footage that I have of this hallway I don't think that it fits on any of the walls in there either so we have to do some research just to find out where it was because it must have been in the school somewhere! I do have some amazing really old wood already to make a shelf out of and that would be such a fun little project to do!
Het witte doekje met het gat er in, heeft waarschijnlijk over een lampje gehangen.😊
Dat zou heel goed kunnen! Erg leuk als mensen zo meedenken;)
The cloth with the hole might be a Christmas tree 🎄 skirt. Glad you’re having fun!
Yes that also could have been it because there were a lot of Christmas fabrics in there. I guess we will never know 100% sure but it is fun to guess.
So so happy to see you shine ✨ the building looks amazing and can’t wait to see it all coming together 🤗
I am so happy about everything too, you guys need to come visit!
Love your enthusiasm. Relish these moments. ❤🎉
Thank you! We will definitely do that!
What an Adventure! Great finds, can‘t wait to see more😍 greetings from cologne Andy
Hi Andy, thank you and greetings back!
The platter would make a great bird bath outside your window. The yellow/white would make a great table throw or runner. Great finds.
Yes it would for sure! I was already making plans to get some bird food too for the winter. I actually think that the yellow/white fabric is actually meant to be used a table runner.
Excited to see the rocking chair reupholstered. I think it will be lovely 💛! As for the shelf with hooks, I like the idea of it going back to its original spot. Especially if the hall is a main entry that greets guests with the obvious space to hang coats and kick off muddy boots below. Great first impression, as I'm confident you'll decorate the shelf above beautifully with vintage treasures wherever it ends up hanging!😻
Hi Erica, thanks for your sweet comment. Glad to hear that you see the potential in the rocking chair too! The hallway is unfortunately not going to be the main entry because there is another hallway that is way more practical to use for is (we actually have 6 hallways, it's ridiculous;) and we are now thinking about starting a second hand shop in there because it's big (and perfect) enough for that so the shelf could still be very useful in there for displaying all kinds of thing on and from.
So many vintage treasures! Put the shelf back in the hallway and build yourself a copy that is a better fit for your classroom. It seems like a shame to cut the original one down to fit a new space.
Yes I agree! Thank you for the input!
I just found your channel, it is fun and entertaining! Living in the forest seems magical, thank you for taking us along. Just a hint. When using the wheelbarrow, before loading it, point it in the direction you will be going so you wont have to turn it around or back up when it is full.
Hi, thank you for your comment, it does feel like a magical place and i am so happy to share everything. As for the wheelbarrow I tried it both ways and for me pulling somehow worked better because I have some pain in my elbow so it probably looked a bit award but it felt better to do it that way....

Where does the door lead to?
Hi Erica, it used to lead into what is now a little second kitchen that we have but it is blocked by a wall so maybe the closet was a little pantry for that kitchen in the past? The next time when we are there I will film a longer video about that part of the house and show everything a bit better.
@EvasHomeVintageDIY Hello Eva. Thanks for your nice answer. Its probably a pantry yes, I think people used to make different doors for different purposes, like more formal doors for main house and a bit simple doors for smaller rooms used for storage in kitchens and warderobes. I love old houses, as soon as I saw your videos I was remembering the old big family houses from when I was little, from my childhood, those in a small Swedish village and how we children ran around playing hide and seek or "Narnia" and finding secret doors in "walk in warderobes" coming out in the next space of the generational living. Every place has a story and your house story is probably a very interesting one too. They built things differently way back in time. I live in Stockholm (im Swedish) and I miss my childhood visiting old family members and grandparents in a small village in Småland. I think Sweden is beautiful most beautiful and lovely in the countryside. I am so looking forward to see more videos from your beautiful house. I know in old Swedish school houses usually the principal/head teacher also used to live in a separate part of the school building making it easy for them to be close to work and maintain the house. Times change, just 90 years ago, people were poor in the big cities and in the countryside life was a bit better, people lived farming life mostly generational living and from the land and what they grew there. All the old Swedish houses have a special charm to them. I love old houses and seeing when the new owners renovate them, and make them practical, personal and beautiful again. It's also about keeping history alive. I'm so happy I found your channel. (Sorry for long comment). Your channel is amazing. Thanks for sharing. 😁😍
Very cool cabinet! Good work ❤
Thank you;)
Oh! I like it I can already see it! You have such a good eye,and it will be amazing! Can't wait! ❤
The same for me!
Are you a carpenter? You very st ease with wood and the cutting machine! I’m always amazed with creative people like you. Good work!
Hi, Thank you! I used to work as a furniture restorer for some years but I am not a carpenter. I just love building things with wood and am blessed with a bit of a 'handy gene' I guess;)
Lovely looking property.
I think so too. It 's a lovely place to be and we feel so lucky that we were be able to buy it.
Ooo I love that they're the old skeleton keys!!
Ah is that how keys like that are called? i never knew that!
@@EvasHomeVintageDIY I love anything truly old like that! So pleased for you both to have found your happy place!
Had to watch again! After seeing Rogier's dump finds it occurs to me that now we will want to see Rogier do "trash to treasure" videos too! lol
Yes I would love that too! he is probably going to be a part of my videos a lot more in the future because we are going to do a lot more projects together in Sweden then we ever did over here in the Netherlands and little Rogier thrift hauls would be a really fun thing to do too! He first wants to film the toilet of curiosities though before doing anything like that he said yesterday.
Hi Eva. Here’s a helpful hint for you if you don’t know it already. When you said your water was fed from a spring my memories went back to 1957 when we moved from a suburb in New Jersey to an isolated country home in Vermont. Our water was fed from a spring as well, but nobody warned us that in the winter we had to leave the faucet cracked open a little bit so that the water will drip out and prevent the pipes from freezing. So that first winter my father had to go out and bust holes through the ice in the brook and the little reservoir and carry buckets of water to the house so we could have water to drink, cook, and bathe in. Not fun.!!
Hi Lynn, yes we are definitely going to need to figure out all kinds of 'anti frost' solutions, not just for the pipes but also for the water pumps because there is a graveyard of pumps already sitting there because people bought them and then they froze and broke. (I think we have 6 broken pumps in the pump-house and one exploded too;) So you are right about that being a potential problem. I love to hear your stories though about stuff like that from the past!
Helpful hint. You said your water is spring fed? Well in the winter time you might want to leave the tap open a tiny bit so that it drips because otherwise it could freeze. When we moved to Vermont in 1957 we had spring fed water and the first winter we were there nobody told us about this. Our pipes froze solid so we had to bust holes in the little brook annd reservoir and haul buckets of water into the house for drinking cooking and bathing, and I was only eight years old at the !
Great point!
I love the colours in the rooms. So bright, fresh and relaxing. Also somehow has a vintage look while also looking modern
Yes i agree, i think it feels more modern because it does not have an antique style but its very simple and all of the windows are amazing!
❤❤❤❤❤❤
🌻
The plank with The hooks, is a shelf with The hooks henging under. Most likely it was hanging out in The korridor. The shelf is needed for hats, gloves and scarfs😉
Yes it definitely is and I love it! It must have come from a big green hallway that we have because that space and the smallest class room are the only spaces that have that color of paint that the shelf has too. Maybe we should actually hang it back into the hallway although i also really want to have it in my space. Bringing original things back to where they came from though might be even more fun.
I’m catching up with your older videos and I’m so glad you bought it! What a beautiful space that was just wasting away! I love your videography capturing all the things many would overlook! So many treasures discovered! The beauty in the surrounding nature! The gentle music! I could almost go to sleep if I wasn’t so excited to see the next frame! 😂❤
Hi Linda, you have a very sharp eye for detail too;) I love it when people notice those things. Glad you liked the video.
