Sonny Stitt, Seam Splits, and Super Tweeters

Just up here relaxing on a Sunday. Listening to Sonny Stitt. What a great album. It’s currently been repressed by acoustic sounds at 45 RPM and sounds great. One of my favorite all time jazz albums. His sax playing is so smooth. What a huge soundstage. Also bought some super tweeters from Aperion. This allowed me to push my speakers out for a bigger soundstage while retaining some of the high-e...

      You can buy all the drivers, crossover parts, and MDF or birch plywood for under 2k for both channels including an 18'' woofer which I am not showing here. So if you are handy with woodworking, you can have a pair of speakers of this sound quality for under 2k. However, as soon as you start custominzing with hardwoods, finishes, the price can obviously start increasing fast. I plan on coming out with some more videos soon that will offer some help for those that are not DIYers.

      It's a perfectly flat frequency reponse. Most people are not used to hearing a flat 20-20 response from the seating position (with the servo subs) and it can appear bright. Also, if you watched the beginning of the demo section, the treble attinuator is open full throttle for this demo to help bring out the detail. Peace and happy listening. OBs are not for everyone.

    Thank you for giving this video to the public. I am really excited about building the ABX style of speaker. Also thank you for laying the groundwork first by demonstrating that your room is well treated and the measurement sweeps show a beautiful line. Now I know that what I'm hearing is the true sound character these drivers are capable of producing. You kept the LaDolce 15" driver (but did not slot load it), the tweeter (albeit 2 and with a flare), the original value cap, and the L pad. That's fine. We are hearing everything that the ABX version uses, minus the LaDolce 18" driver, but are instead treated with two towers of Rythmik open baffle servo drivers mounted in H-frames via GR Research. I have a few follow up questions if I may be so bold. I think I may know the reason for some of your choices, but that may be presumptuous of me. 1. Why two tweeters and why the flare? 2. What brand of cap are you using and did you try others? 3. What frequencies are being done by the subs and what slope did you like best? 4. Did you have any other issues that you had to work around with dsp? 5. Your speaker design and finish looks audio show worthy of a room. They appear to have semi enclosures in the back. How important are they in sound quality or was it aesthetics? Again, beautiful.

    • @TimbreDynamics
      @TimbreDynamics 2 місяці тому

      1. Two tweeters is not necessary. One works just fine. This is something I'm working on with a partner. The two tweeter horn adapter should be available later this year. It's still in the prototype phase. Start with 1 and add another when this is ready. 2. You can get my external crossover 3D model with links to all the XOver parts here: www.thingiverse.com/thing:6670319 3. The subs are taking over at 120Hz. Sub slopes and other adjustments are very room specific, so sharing them here is useless for anyone. The GR research servo subs are just amazing and cost around $4k to make in a DIY kit. However, if you visit the ABX audiophile discord, you will see many people building these with the LaDolce 18'' sub bass drivers with good results. 4. I do not use DSP, never have. I have worked really hard on dialing in my room. Your room is your biggest speaker. Most people ignore it, but it's probably more important than many other things people spend money on. It's taken me 3 years to get here. I am no room acoustics expert, I only achieved this through trial and error. 5. No semi-enclosures in back. They are mounted straight to the baffle. The case you see on the back of the 15, is a crossover case (See #2 above) One other note, I am using front loading on the 15. I am using a 9'' hole. Most people on the discord are using a 9 or 10'' hole for the 15. The group is using a similar technique on the 18 bass driver. Again, before purchasing anything, join the discord and listen to the other member's implementations and check out their designs. Peace and happy listening.

    The sound is fabulous! I'm hooked. I'm intrigued by the use of two tweeters and look forward to your video on this aspect of the design and build. Conventional wisdom says that concentric midrange/tweeter provides the best imaging. Did you find any downside by placing the tweeters a considerable distance above the midrange?

    • @TimbreDynamics
      @TimbreDynamics 2 місяці тому

      Everything is a trade off. I much prefer the tweeter outside the coax in this case. It measures so much better out than in. Perhaps a small loss in imaging, but sounds oh so much better to me. So smooth outside. Incredibly flat and less peaky response IMO. I’m going off the deep end next. 15’’ MTM. Is it possible? I think it just might be. We’ll see.

      Yes and yes. To get a 20k signal from the seating position, it takes a lot of treble output. Who can hear that high anyway? However, it’s there if you want it. That’s the beauty. Again I normally listen at about 60 percent of that output. The larger the room the more open you want that lpad. These speakers should scale to a large room with no issues.

    I got into Open Baffle speakers about six years ago, and now Im hooked! The only box speakers I own are subwoofers for movies and car systems

      That’s what the lpad attenuator is for. You can dial down the treble to your hearts content.

    Listening using cheap Sony headphones and the sound quality must be incredible. Currently open baffle speakers are becoming more talked about, in which the sound quality can be customized to your room without costing much. Currently MAGNAPAN is working with another engineer on adding subs w/ crossovers. The results are also incredible except at a much higher price. Thanks for sharing.

    Keep music education alive :) love the design. I’m interested how they do with bad recordings or LPs Missing Depth? Sounds like it’s lacking depth? I also have open baffle and they need more powa! These seem fatiguing. Maybe I’m wrong. BTW I have Maggie’s paired with open baffle.

    Please take the comments below as constructive. 1st I'll say that I agree with your measurement philosophy for most folks (due to room) and that Open Baffles are amazing. I see a few setup issues (acoustically); FYI, I am a acoustics engineer, Masters. Do you have measurements for the speaker and your room. I would be interested in full spectrum frequency response, waterfall, on & off axis vertical and horizontal , and impedance curve (hard to see graph from screen) Hard to tell how well the speakers sound from a video, UA-cam however bass was very good, considering sub placement.

Your bass issues btw are more room than anything however placement and gain matching are critical. Thanks for the response, I would love to hear these compared to the GR NX-Otica and SPATIAL AUDIO M...

    I sure feel underserved by my current speakers/system. Is wanting to experience this system too much to want or am I suffering from FOMO? I'm so happy for the owner of this room and gear.

      @@TimbreDynamics Sir, thanks for the reply. I do watch ABX - seemingly a great guy. He's having great fun with speaker designs. Very nice of you to say that I can have nice things also. However, I am pretty sure that my financials will never allow for luxuries beyond the better brand of hotdogs in the fridge. Best wishes to you and all of the others the abilities to have achievements I cannot. Happy with what I have I must be. Lucky to have what I do. If I can keep it. Again, all the very best, Kevin

    One of the first steps into understanding what to do, watch the ABX Audiophile video linked in the description. Join the ABX Audiophile discord, then go to the abx-baffle and open-baffle channel in Discord. Before purchasing anything, join the discord and listen to the other member's implementations and check out their designs. Be sure to watch this entire video before asking questions. There are measurements and design considerations near the end.

    Wow, these sound awesome over you tube even, great in-room measurements frequency response is spot on, What tweeters are you using and what is the cutout in front of the 15" and how far back is it recessed?

    • @TimbreDynamics
      @TimbreDynamics 2 місяці тому

      1.5'' thick Acacia hardwood baffle. 9'' hole for the 15. The tweeters I'm using here are car competition tweeters. I'll post more on those later. You don't need those. The LDA tweeters Terry sells are plenty good.
