The Listening Room
United States
Приєднався 12 лип 2020
This is an attempt to document my journey into creating my own dedicated listening room and ultimately launching my own brand in high-end audio furniture, accessories, and components. I have always been into hi-fi sound since I was a kid. My dad was an audiophile back in the 70s, so I grew up listening to great-sounding equipment. I understood the difference quality components could make. I also understood that these components could cost a small fortune. I was a DJ in several nightclubs during my college years. I ended up collecting thousands of 80's and 90's dance 12'' singles during that time. I ended up selling my DJ equipment right out of college but kept a lot of my vinyl collection. Crates and crates of them have been sitting under my stairs for decades. Over the years my taste in music has changed, but my passion for a great listening experience has not. Now it's my turn, in moderation of course. ;)

Just up here relaxing on a Sunday. Listening to Sonny Stitt. What a great album. It’s currently been repressed by acoustic sounds at 45 RPM and sounds great. One of my favorite all time jazz albums. His sax playing is so smooth. What a huge soundstage. Also bought some super tweeters from Aperion. This allowed me to push my speakers out for a bigger soundstage while retaining some of the high-e...

@@jeffersonlloyd9971 9-10 feet.
Im impressed. Love 18:51. Started listening to a ton of flamenco during the pandemic. Im sure this would be utterly visceral on your setup.
I think I spy an Eames recliner!
Thanks for the demo, I love your setup, beautiful room! Your setup definitely brings out details I do not normally hear! Did you mention what microphone you are using to record the demo? I may have missed this.
iPhone 13 Pro Max. lol
@@TimbreDynamics They must use decent microphones!
@@noahblorm2990amazing for a phone. 😊
Is the bass from the sub or the OB speakers?
Subs have everything below 150hz. You need subs with these.
Wow .. is it an AMT tweeter. Joined ABX in discord . What are those drivers..Another video on this speaker with close ups and the from behind is appreciated. It kind of looked dark here. Do you mind sharing the schematics..😊
Let us listen, then stop the music then speak because we really dont hear you and it disrupt the listening experience. Open baffle is quite interesting
How the heck did you make an open baffle video and not mention Danny Richie or his company GR-Research!
@@njrumenos Danny is not the center of the universe in open baffle designs. Believe it or not there are some really smart people doing it other than Danny. Don’t get me wrong, I like the triple threats, but I’m about to replace them with something I like much better. I tend to lean more towards the bigger higher efficient drivers vs smaller ones. To each their own. Btw, I have other videos starring the triple threats. Peace and happy listening.
@@TimbreDynamicsnice, i was talking about his flagship speakers the NX Otica and NX Treme not the OB servo subs
Hey Mike which compression Drivers are you using on these? I was thinking you said they were not the Lda1001? Thanks Scott
Nope. Modified DS18 drivers. You can find them on my website.
Hi, very nice listening room and video! Do I understand you correctly that you recommend to move the tweeters from the coaxial position? This is one of the key points to the original ABX project. Could you elaborate on this?
Yes. I find that the performance of the tweeter does much better outside the coax position. Measurements also indicate this as well. Outside the coax position you have so many other options on which horn to use. You’ll be able to tune the sound to your room much easier. It also allows you to time align the tweeter perfectly with the 15. Putting the tweeter behind the 15 was always a strange concept for me. Never liked it to begin with. The exit flange of the 15 isn’t optimized for the frequencies of the tweeter IMO. Sias, Dan, and many other experienced members have gone this route. So I’m not alone. Good luck and peace and happy listening.
Open baffle can really sound good. It is in the design and placement that needs to be carefully done.
Exactly right. The placement in the room is key.
@@TimbreDynamicsugggh. This is amazing but I don’t like placing speakers too away from the back wall-it’s fine for dedicated rooms but not multi-use. But I want that sound!! Im about to buy commercial OBs. I do like creating and constructing, and I have a lot of tools, but I don’t know what im doing and I can’t spend all my time on it… Im gonna want to sit with ears about 10 feet from the back wall, and place the front of the baffles 2 feet in front of the wall, 8 feet apart. But everything I have seen says you are supposed to place things based on the empirical sound and that’s how it is… uggh.
What's tha below the 15-in driver?
Badging
4.5 sounds ALIVE!
Too much hassle with biasing. I’ll stick Primaluna 😂
I'm extremely impressed with your speakers, how do I get a pair.
I’m working on it.
@@TimbreDynamics I'm all in
They are killer and compete soundwise with much more expensive set ups. Doing that for $4 grand in todays market is a super deal if you like really good sound and have some spare money.
Can you please tell me your speaker driver set up? What size are the drivers?
All in the description
thank you for your response. Asking because In the description you are indicating an 18” subwoofer, a 15” driver and a tweeter. However, in the image of the speaker, I only see a tweeter and 1 driver, not 2. Is the driver on the baffle the sub or the mid?
@@alexiheaka1074 I’m using GR research servo subs in this video. Those are large towers the speaker baffle is attached to. Join the ABX discord group and see what the other members are building with all 3 drivers.
@ thank you very much.
@ im already part of the ABX group. I go by the name Big Al. Asking my questions because in the description you have La Dolce drivers which I have been listening to and sound different from the driver in your video.
That first track you played, ‘The Pink Panther,’ I have the 50th anniversary edition of the LP, and it sounds pretty good on my system. However, I can tell even through my apple pro headphones how visceral the sound of those OB speakers are. Truly amazing! Indeed, the vividness of the brass, likewise, is truly stunning!! Now I know what I am missing, and thankfully it is not ‘unobtainium.’
#DropTheBox
Man that’s amazing Any idea how they sound without the subs? I have Borresen x6 and love them but these might be even better Wowowowowiwowowiwi!!!!!!!!
You need a sub. The way the 15’’ is voiced it’s great at mids but rolls off hard after 150hz.
Just add tubes in the chain...to warm it little bit
16 tubes in the chain now. It’s a very neutral sound IMO in the room.
Fantastic sound
Can I buy these?
@@notathang8087 message me if you are serious about buying a pair.
Love OB speakers! I had a pair with compression drivers. I had to sell after I renovated our house. Going from full carpet and curtains to hardwood and shutters, hardened the room so much I couldn't listen to them for any longer than ten minutes. Be aware these drivers are very bright! As you age your high frequency recognition diminishes, so they may sound better if your older. Many older audiophiles go to horns and metal dome tweeters.
Everything you stated is true. Great sound is a marriage of the speaker, room, components, and user preferences. Building a single speaker for all use cases is impossible. That's the beauty of DIY. You can tailer everything to your room and tastes. I have a pair of planar ribbon tweeters on my website that are excellent alternatives to the compression tweeter. You can also implement an LPAD resistor in the signal path to the tweeter that allows you to dial down the tweeter output. This works quite well. My take, which is quite different IMO, is to design all speakers to be modular with swappable components allowing you to tweak your implementation over time and exchange out drivers without throwing out everything else around them. This is also a tough thing to do well, but I think I might be able to solve some of the issues.
Wow this came up on my feed, very cool. I'd like to build a pair in my shop. I just subscribed so I hope I can get led to the plans and parts somewhere here.
The best open baffle speaker on the market for $2k is The Caladan made by Clayton Shaw Acoustic Lab. It’s one of the best open baffle speakers available today.
But they’re not $2k, are they? You meant $2k each, or you getting some special pricing somehow?
@ I haven’t looked at the prices since launch, so they might have changed. Did you look at the website?

You can buy all the drivers, crossover parts, and MDF or birch plywood for under 2k for both channels including an 18'' woofer which I am not showing here. So if you are handy with woodworking, you can have a pair of speakers of this sound quality for under 2k. Very bright and hollow sounding
It's a perfectly flat frequency reponse. Most people are not used to hearing a flat 20-20 response from the seating position (with the servo subs) and it can appear bright.
