    great clear and simple to follow tutorial for a first time FreeCAD user. When i z aligned the magnet cut out to 8.2mm and press ok, all looks ok (13mins) but when i try to create the pocket to 2mm i keep getting an "Wire Not Closed" warning. Not sure what i am doing wrong.

      it's ok, i figured it out... my arc and my slot were not connected, i did try and join the lines but ended up re-sketching the slot making sure the points turn yellow to ensure lines are connected.

      Awesome work, you got it! FreeCAD 1.0 release candidate is available and way more stable then the current version and you get a lot less of these kids if issues. The freeCAD Devs are really brining out the A game on the next release, it really feels like something special. 🍻

    Nice, Just revisited this tutorial again, to brush up on creating 2 spreadsheets, UserInput & Math. I found myself working on a project and only had 1 spreadsheet, well it got real confusing fast. I also did all my calculation in the sketch while dimensioning and referring to the spreadsheet and created the calculation in there, which is burdensome. I will now go back and create a "UserInput" and a "Math" spreadsheets, first to group all anything that needs User Input to a cleaner Spreadsheet with fewer choices, right, and secondly to get a little more precise with my condition statements. I want to be able to take a given length that needs circle placed at a give space apart, i.e. length = 105mm and the space apart space=20mm, so 105mm/20mm=5.25 #/circle, so ceil(#/circle) will automatically be rounded to "count" of 5 circles. You got me thinking! The remainder will create a leftover space at the end though? Not really a deal breaker! what is white and floating in your brandy snifter? I am not a connoisseur... Thanks G_Dub

    Very clear and helpful vids here. I've started trying to figure out FreeCAD, but it's going about as well as you'd expect a monkey with a wrench would do. I'm trying to rebuild some of my stl files in FreeCAD for machining. Blender (file format) is great for printing, not so good for CNC. I'm trying to adjust and constrain multiple shapes in Sketcher. The first three work great, I get them fully constrained and they match my blender coords perfect. When it comes time to constrain a fourth shape, it says nope. Any clue what is happening here and better yet, how to fix it?! Error code it drops: Traceback (most recent call last): File "<string>", line 1, in <module> <class 'ValueError'>: Negative datum values are not valid for the constraint with index 15 00:36:10 App.getDocument('Unnamed').getObject('Sketch').setDatum(15,App.Units.Quantity('3.000000 mm')) 00:36:24 Traceback (most recent call last): File "<string>", line 1, in <module> <class 'ValueError'>: Negative datum values are not valid for the constraint with index 15 00:36:24 App.getDocument('Unnamed').getObject('Sketch').setDatum(15,App.Units.Quantity('-3.000000 mm'))

      @@QEngineering Hi again Quin, I've been meaning to get back to you regarding spreadsheets in Freecad. I was well through a model with a large spreadsheet when I found your video and incorporated conditional statements into my existing sheet. As I said, it was already a large spreadsheet plus I wanted all the info in one sheet only, so I had to work around a bit to get it to function- a confusing phase until eventually a light turned on. That done, the spreadsheet looked like something out of a horror movie, Frankenstein came to mind! But it worked and I was happy about that. Since then I've created a few simple practice models driven by spreadsheets using conditional statements. Over time, I've managed to refine the sheets to the point they look fairly simple and entirely respectable. Now I need to go back to my initial project and rebuild or start again on a better spreadsheet layout, one I can come back to in the future and not be totally confused when I look at it! Cheers.

  • @petrstefaniknet
    @petrstefaniknet 2 місяці тому

    Just a workaround the fact, that FreeCad does not have the midpoint of the line to snap on. The exist of a midpoint would make life a lot easier then this. Unfortunately Free cad is full of similar unnecessary complications that makes FreeCAD users more frustrated.

    • @QEngineering
      @QEngineering 2 місяці тому

      The good news is that the next the release does have a midpoint auto constraint when you hover close to the center of a line. Just don't forget that FreeCAD isn't even in version 1.0 yet, so I can see them having to prioritize development of key features and trying to navigate around some of Adobi's scummy patents that maintain their monopoly on CAD software.

  • @hansdegroot652
    @hansdegroot652 2 місяці тому

    Yeah but why constraints?

    • @QEngineering
      @QEngineering 2 місяці тому

      Think of it this way, every element you draw can be manipulated in many ways (degrees of freedom), this makes the element unpredictable. So you setup constraints to make it's behaviour predictable. This is important in parametric designs. Confused? Well imagine your designing something for 3D printing at home, you print the prototype and discover that everything is good in the x and y dimensions but you want to add a bit of room in the z dimension. If you have your constraints setup properly you could just change the z dimension and everything would figure itself out based it's "rules of behaviour" (aka constraints). In the same scenario if you didn't use constraints a simple change in the z dimensions may require you to manually update hundreds of elements by hand. When I did my engineering internship in the 90s parametric designs really weren't used. On one project when the design specs changed I had to edit 300 2D AutoCAD drawings, and calculating the offset of elements by hand to reflect the change, this took me over 500hours to complete.

    Thanks for another great tutorial, useful and entertaining. And if it wasn't for Your good-humoured presentation I think I would have given up. Since FreeCad (Once again) refused to ""play along"". First it refused to show the names on the spreadsheets after having renamed them, it ((for it's own inscrutable reasons)) just displayed the name of the "FreeCad-file" in their "windowHeader"...This was "corrected" by closing and reopening their windows... But after that they refused to find their the values "by referencing he aliases... The "names" (UserInput and Math) came up as "auto.complete" but none of their aliased cells came up, and if I filled them in they (ofcourse) didn't work...And this wasn't resolved regardless of how many times I "erased and redid" the "setup"..First after closing and reopening the file it all worked (without me having to change anything !!?? so what had not worked when I saved and closed it worked when reopened... Cheechhh.....)

    I've watched a bunch of tutorials. You're the first one to clue me into the distance constraint which fixed my current sketch. However, I don't feel any more knowledgeable about how to achieve a constrained sketch. The must be a more elegant method than randomly applying constraints until it works - this took me hours for what I thought would be the simplest part of my model. It there an order of operations, or effecient strategy for constraining? I was having the most problems with arcs so I started by constraining them with brute force and then following along the perimeter one line segment at a time. I was surprised that in the end I was stuck with one small line that when deleted would turn everything green. I wound up deleting it and replacing with an arc and it worked! What I think I know: 1. Plan whole sketch in advance and constrain it as you go. (LOL. this isn't going to happen often; I'm an on-the-fly kind of guy) 2. deleting and re-drawing difficult segments. 3. constrain one segment and build off that. 4. use all the constrain tools. what I don't get 1. I'm guessing the goal is to clearly define each point's relative location. is there a best "home" location? the purple external geometries seem more effective. should I constrain more thing to these? 2. Is there a best constrain tool to start with or is it better to get SOMETHING constrained and build off that? 3. lots more probably

    • @QEngineering
      @QEngineering 4 місяці тому

      My workflow is to first find a staring point, this could be a reference that I measured an object from or something like the center of the object. I also consider what pattern feature I will use (mirror, polar or linear) and setup the sketch for that. I then draw a general outline of the shape I need, I'll make sure everything in joined up using point and coincidence constraints. Then I'll apply horizontal and vertical constraints, then angles. After that I worry about dimensions. I also don't bother doing any chamfers or fillets on a sketch level. The big thing is not to overdo the amount of features on a sketch. If for example you have a square lid with a bolt hole in each corner I would first sketch a square using the center of the box as my reference, extrude it, then make a 2nd sketch for one of the bolt holes and use a polar transform to generate the 3 other bolt holes. Then lastly I'd apply chamfers and fillets last. Hope that helps, I am planing to make videos on this subject when the next version of freecad comes out, they've made significant changes on the UI side so I'm holding off until the dev team finishes their magic. 🍻

      Ok, I found it, you need to use the conditional expressions with the question mark '?'. Because it produces really big expressions, I guess, I will work without them and do the validation by myself (human brain, lol). I think it is better to choose meaning full names, then it should be clear. Edit: I found your video: "FreeCAD Tutorial Conditional Statements in Spreadsheets" where you explain how to do this with two spreadsheets. Nice approach, thank you.

  • @jmemusic

    Nice tutorial, but shouldn't you include the units too on the Spreadsheet values? I know it defaults to millimeters, but what if you want inches? I usually use millimeters and even if defaults to that unit, I also specify them

    • @jmemusic
      @jmemusic 5 місяців тому

      Answering to my own question: I guess it is better not to work with the full units because "-1 mm" will be treated as text. So, better check that the are set right under: Preferences > General > Unit System

    • @QEngineering
      @QEngineering 5 місяців тому

      Most the things that I design at home are designed to be 3D printed, all my measuring tools at home are set to mm. So when I sit down in front of FreeCAD I don't think about changing units. That being said I've designed things for both the American and Japanese markets and the worse sin that you can commit is mixing measurement types. As a jr engineer in the 90s I watched someone get walked out the building for designing a tool head for a robot in inches but then using metric for all the hardware (bolts, washers ... Etc).

      Glad I could pass on the knowledge ☺️. Greetings from 🇨🇦. I came from Solid Works and Catia and even I had a hard time starting out. FreeCAD basically went it's own way rather then coping other software. This makes it harder to learn but once you get use to the FreeCAD way it makes the other CAD software feel 20 years out of date. 🍻

    It is so cool. FreeCAD is becoming so powerful, there is no limit to open-source creativity. Thank you for showing us all these improvements. I am so happy that whenever I ask Google Gemini to draw an object it generates a FreeCAD Python 🐍 script.

      FreeCAD has been making some real advances over the years. The next version of FreeCAD will include a fix to the Topo naming issue and an integrated assembly work bench, this will make FreeCAD an absolute monster. 🍻

      @@ajarivas72If you edit a part and the edit causes a new face to appear FreeCAD will renumber the faces which can cause your model to break (the wrong faces will stick to each other). It's freeCADs biggest issues. A dev names realthunder came up with a fix a few years ago in his own branch (link stage 3, aka FreeCAD RT).

      @@QEngineering Thanks for the clarification. I know and use FreeCAD real-thunder, it's a great variant. Most of the time I use the normal FreeCAD. The topological naming problem you mention, it is not new to me. Drawing everything with topological Python scripting has helped me to avoid that issue, furthermore employing Python scripting has helped me to automatize most of my work and that has let me use FreeCAD in batch more with the command freecadcmd. My first encounter with FreeCAD was in February 2016. I love it since then.

      @@ajarivas72 if you reference everything to the origin (0,0,0) you will never get effected by topo naming. I'll often do this, say rather then sketching in a face, I'll create a sketch on a parallel plane then using the attachment editor I'll offset the z by the height of the pad.length value. I started working with 3d designs in 2000 and the old mechanical engineers use to reference everything to the origin and I never understood why until I stared with freeCAD (in 2015). Apparently the first few versions of Catia and Solid Works suffered from this as well. I haven't done much work with python in FreeCAD but you definitely make it sound cool. 🍻

    Thanks for another great tutorial. _(Edited, after installing other "distribution" of the program)_ I don't know if it's a version or OS (or me) issue, I' using FreeCad V.021.2. But it's a "Snap-package", on PopOS v.22.04 But when ever I copy a "cell-name" to make the "Alias", regardless if I right click over the cell, OR double click and copy the "content". It gives me the "name" BUT puts a "single-quote" (like this ' ) At the very start. Which "breaks the reference", All You have to do is delete the "single quote", not hard to do, but annoying, especially before I figured out what caused the "break". *Edited:* -What is worse is that using "Named-references" between spreadsheets and cells (like You do in this tutorial) seems utterly broken in "my FreeCad" :/ Instead I'm "forced" to use the "literal-references", i.e. the "original-name" of the spreadsheet, and then the "cell", e.g. "=Spreadsheet.B2"- -Which isn't "hard" but inconvenient if You have many references as You "lose track" when You have no descriptive names in the references... And IF I want to use "renamed" spreadsheets, I have to somehow "keep track" of what order they were created in to be able to "figure out" their original name (i.e. if it's "Spreadsheet001 or spreadsheet002 or some other one... ;/)- The "referencing problems that I had WAS indeed a "symptom" of the "platform/version" I used. I had a "Snap-package"(not flatpak as I originally wrote). After uninstalling that and instead using an "App-image" of the same version (v.021.2) of the program, the "name-referencing" worked as intended (and as You show) But You still can not use "." in Your Names, as that still "breaks the reference" (which on consideration is easy to understand, but I did it out of habit habit.. which caused me another "snag") Just wanted to point these things out, in the unlikely case that someone else gets the same problems. Best regards.

    Wow, I like this, you have re-directed my thinking... Your videos are great! I have an existing model (2"x48" belt grinder) that I am going back over the dimensions and converting to a spreadsheet. The existing dimensions just need to be whole numbers, and my dimensions are, except for one R16.5mm but that will work out for the diameter. Anyway with my dimensions I'm trying to just use a percentage of the total distance (i.e. total width is 265mm with a 65mm offset from the Origin(LowerLeftCorner) and then the 200mm base begins over to the right corner) so 200/265= 0.7547169811, it starts out as whole numbers but freecad is not allowing zero decimal points so I end up with a dimension with 3 or more decimal points and I can live with just rounding up or down, maybe I will try the "ceil" command? I would like to have a small, medium and large size of Grinder, that's why I am using percentages. I am thinking I will just enlarge everything globally by the percent I choose. I have never done this before... as you can tell... any suggestions ? Thanks G-Dub

      I'm glad I got your imagination going, knowledge is golden but imagination is priceless. It sounds like your 100% on the right path, the solution you have sounds very logical and if it works for you that's amazing. Keep doing what makes sense for you. Personally what I've started doing in some designs is using 3 fields, 1 is the dimension, 2nd is an offset and the 3rd is the total on both. I then use the total as the volume. I like this because I can maintain my optimal dimensions and see the offset which is compensation for my 3d printer tolerance, it works well for me because I can take a look at the design years later and know what's going on. Which is basically what your seem to be doing but I like dealing with hard values (ie 0.1mm) while you like percentages, which is simply a personal style. Keep up the great work really sounds like you're rockin FreeCAD. 🍻
