    I also ordered the 5 extruder version right away. I technically only need about 3 Extruders (TPU, soluble, the actual printing material) so i can finally make mixed material prints and integrate flexible joints or seals without major design iterations or assembly, but having 2 extra extruders on top of the required 3 are a neat addition, so I have to swap filaments less or can add multicolor to complex prints.
    I always liked prusa for not forcing me to fiddle and tinker with the printer itself. It just works with good quality and is very reliable. Now this beast is calibrating itself completely, no matter if i changed the sheet, did some maintenance or anything. And it seems like it comes with a full enclosure for certain materials, so, yes, please! It is a whole new level of convenience.
    I'm probably going to sell my MK3S as soon, as the XL arrives, since I only need one FDM printer and the XL is superior in every aspect. And I bet someone will be happy with a good deal on an MK3S :)
    I know the XL is a bit pricey, but you get bleeding edge Innovations. Also this thing will last and I was never let down by the prusa support, so I am willing to trust their product and invest my money.

      That is one thing I'll say about Prusa they always have the best interest of the costumer in mind. I think that the Prusa echo system will eventually make printing 3D objects just as easy as printing a PDF.

    I ordered the 5 head, it’ll be my second printer about 6 months ago I bought my first the Creality CR-10 smart, I’ve spent so much time dialing it in I’ve learned so much and came up with my own solutions to common problems with CR-10 smart. I want to print multi color projects and a printer I don’t have to replace or tweak parts. Hopefully the added cost gets me what I’m looking for.

    Much to my surprise, I decided to get one of these, and put down my $200 deposit. I have been interested in a printer with a tall build volume more than a big build plate, and if Anycubic were still making the Predator delta printer I probably would have bought one. I also like the idea of either a stationary build plate or one that just moves in z. The only other printer I might have considered would have been the Ender 5 Plus. (I currently have an Ender 5 Pro.) When I saw the Prusa XL, I was just thrilled at the engineering of the machine. Yes, it cost more than 3x what an Ender 5 Plus costs, but I want a printer that just works without having to calibrate a bunch of things or worry if the BLTouch is going to deploy or if its probe pin will break, etc. And I am just so sick of these second-rate printers (yes, like the Crealitys) that require all kinds of fiddling, modifying, and firmware changing just to get them to work like they are supposed to.

    They can use the load cell to detect filament clogs too and they use it to auto calibrate the multi tool heads. The 5 head XL has three power supplies in the back (according to 3D Printing Nerd's video) and can control the 16 heating zones individually to not have cold spots in the corners. They have announced a fully enclosed chamber too besides the accordeon draft shield that was in the video.
    And even the "small changes" like not having to route a wire all the way back to the controller if you replace the hotend are worth mentioning. Overall I do think it has lot of new features that will set a new standard in the prosumer market.
    I have preordered the 5 head version, since I have a few months to find a buyer for one of my kidneys.

    I'm fortunate to be in the position where time is worth more than money, and as cool as the Voron is I don't have time to research packages and assemble kits (if they made a pre-assembled Voron 0.1 I'd be all over it). I'm coming from the other end, I have a $4200 Makerbot Method-X, and while the hardware and customer service are a 5/5, the software situation is a giant turd, so I'm interested in the Prusa XL. My only remaining question is around hot end wattage. I'd like to print faster with larger nozzles (functional pieces), and that requires a 50-100 W hot end.

      FYI LDO makes a voron 0.1 kit. If I had waited just another 30 days I could have gotten it but when I got my Formbot kit I had no clue it was coming out.
      Software wise Prusa Engineers are wizards. I spent hundreds of hours tuning/experimenting to get a perfect simplified 3d profile and Boom out comes slic3r Prusa edition and the print quality was just as good as my profile.

      I use to have to do that in my old place because my basement was so cold in the winter that it would trip the thermal protection on the MK2.
      If you listen to the diehard ABS boys, they recommend heat soaking the printer, ie letting the frame and components come up to temp. Maybe I should do a cold frame + hot air myth busters this winter.

      They haven't announced it yet, but I'd imagine that prusa will continue working with E3D so I'd imagine 280ish should be no issues. The big question is if the hotend has a hardened nozzle, anything carbon reinforces is abrasive so it wears out brass nozzles.

What do you thing, qidi x-cf vs prusa XL..?

    • @QEngineering
      @QEngineering  2 роки тому +1

      Honestly, I would not buy ether. The biggest thing that I suggest before purchasing a new printer is to check out the community associated with the printers and see what issues people are having and how the community treats new users.
      Since the XL isn't out we don't yet know the issues, when the mk3 was released it's print quality was inferior to the first 3-6 months untill they got the pressure advance stuff worked out, also the filament runout sensor had issues untill it was redesigned.
      The qidi is a printer that I'm hearing about for the first time, but since I've been printing for many years I have a good understanding of quality vs price. And I can safely say that if their print quality is as advertised then everyone on UA-cam would be talking about it. There is a lot of fly-by-night companies on the 3d printer space And my Spidey-senses are tingling on this one.

      Also I highly recommend looking into CNC kitchens videos on material strengths, nylons are hard to print, so you may be happier with ABS or PETG. Most of my functional prints are done in ABS and they hold up so well that my nylon rolls don't get used much. Infact Angus from Makers muse uses an impact resistant PLA for one of his battle bots.

  • @ggaub
    @ggaub 2 роки тому

    Isn't that a MK2? Have you upgraded it to the 24v heat bed? If not, it's no wonder it takes ages to heat up. That's the whole point of the new heat bed on the XL, faster heat up times, even heating across the bed, and less warping due to heating small plates instead of a really large plate. This also allows them to avoid using AC for the bed as most other, large form factor beds use, which is a lot more dangerous.
    And yes, you could build a RatRig or Voron for less, but you also are having to do a lot more work for the build, from part sourcing to firmware compiling, and you'd still be lacking several of the innovations Prusa is bringing to the table.
    But yeah... if you have little/no need for large format, then it holds little appeal, even with the innovative things it has.
    I did order one, because just like my MK3 Prusas, I expect it will be money well spent for a machine that is relatively easy to build, and is a solid workhorse machine.

    • @QEngineering
      @QEngineering  2 роки тому +1

      It's an MK2.5S, there's an mk3s+ just off screen beside it 😋.
      When you print ABS you need to use an enclosure, the air temp of that enclosure needs to hit 50degC or your going to get warping. So you basically heat the bed to 100 and let it sit for a while to heat the air. The more air you need to heat the longer it takes.
      The 12v bed only takes a few seconds more to preheat then the 24v bed. Since they are the same wattage.

    • @ggaub
      @ggaub 2 роки тому

      Gotcha. By virtue of there being more air to heat, a large format printer will take longer for an enclosure to warm up to optimum temperature for high temp materials such as ABS. I have one of my MK3 in a LACKL enclosure to print ABS from time to time, so I get it.
      When we're talking about printing a large object that will take days to print, a few extra minutes of warming the chamber won't matter much. But, as you said, most of your printing is of small objects, for which your smaller printers are perfect. No need for the XL.
