Highwind Amps + Peper's Pedals - Fire & Sword

The Fire and Sword is a preamp pedal based around the Orange Rockerverb, and is a collaboration between Highwind Amplification and Peper's Pedals. In addition to the preamp circuit, the pedal features an independent boost with a toggle that allows you to have an HW Dire Wolf flavored boost or a PP Dirty Tree. For the bulk of the sounds I'm running this straight into my DAW and using Own Hammer ...

These usually kind of suck, but this one is really good and just adds to the utility of the Terror Stamp. @OrangeAmplifie...

    Thanks a lot for the honest review! This really highlights things that people would run into when actually using this thing. I was considering the ToneX One for bass, but finally ordered the Zoom MS-60B+. I also would like some effects along with amp models, all in a small form-factor, but with infinite knobs and a screen for easy operation. Let's see if it fits my needs, it should arrive tomorrow. Zoom will also release a pedal specifically for impulse response, the MS-80IR+. Sure, you won't get the ToneX ecosystem with it, but easy operation, and the option to use it on battery. And they also have software to program the pedals more easily. Sadly only for iOS... Sometimes having only a few knobs and no screen doesn't mean it's easy to navigate. E. g. the Line 6 POD Express has the same issue with traditional knobs not representing the actual value, and the inconvenience of having to use an alt button to access the EQ.

    Sick riffing in the intro song - I recognized it immediately. I've always been looking to emulate MO's wall of sound on the guitar-heavy Cope album (specifically the crunchy, driving, grungy, ballad-y intro to The Mansion.) I see they've used a lot of drives and fuzzes over the years, and I'm not quite sure how they got that super nice tone on that album. This pedal looks and sounds so sick though. I love the idea of a Rat/Muff combo, and I've been digging a lot of pedal makers from Australia.

      This is such a gnarly pedal. Any time I sit down with a fuzz that isn’t just completely over the top I almost always lean towards some MO type stuff. Andy Hull is one of my favorite song writers both musically and lyrically. I know for the longest time he credited his tone to that red tele he’s plays all the time with the pickup wired straight to the output. No volume or tone wired at all.

    • @bw5260

    It's a workflow that defnitely takes getting used to Now i use it for bass amps and as a great IR loader after the new Zoom MS-60B+ I have ToneX MAX in my DAW to demo models and create presets. I use the standalone librarian to move presets to the pedal I do NOT use it as an audio interface I have an RME Babyface Pro for an interface I didn't like the UI either, now i'm flying with it Sadly, the librarian does NOT run on iOS Probably never will I love ToneX One now

      It really works for a lot of people. I ended up trading this to a friend of mine and to the best of my knowledge he’s really digging it. I’m not a bass player and so I don’t have a lot of specific tones I’m looking for, so it actually would’ve worked fine for me in bass as well. It's unfortunate that Black Mass didn't put any labels on the Clip knob. It's pretty hard to tell which one we're hearing. So comparing different model types across the 2 pedals that aren't necessarily even the same sound is a bit disorienting. Overall though, I gotta say, preferred most of the 1312 tones.

    • @BMinusDemos
      @BMinusDemos 18 днів тому

      I think putting it on the face of the pedal would have been too messy. But I have seen builders put a label on the back of the pedal. That’s helpful. JHS’ distinguish marks aren’t super useful if you aren’t aware of the history of each version of the circuit. That’s why instead of individual models being compared it was more of an all of one pedal and all of the other kind of thing.

      That’s always my goal. I never want to trash something, but if it doesn’t work for me I want to talk about why and hopefully that helps others 👍

      No. I got lucky and picked mine up in a trade. He was sold out on the Science website. I was close to doing the CME preorder though because I wanted one bad!

    I had one and returned it. The software is bad to deal with. It was cumbersome. I spent more time fiddling than playing and that's never good.

    • @BMinusDemos
      @BMinusDemos Місяць тому

      Same. I traded mine to a buddy for a ZVex Lofi Junkie and I have had way more fun with that than I ever did the ToneX lol

  • @jvshangout
    @jvshangout Місяць тому

    For the price it’s really hard to beat. I love mine.. sure I wished the software was easier to navigate.. but for the sound you can get out of it.. it’s worth the hassle. My main issue is after you load a sound onto the actual pedal, you can’t just edit it from the software still.. you have to tweak the original and drag it back to the slot in order to make the changes. Like you said their IK captures aren’t great.. go with ToneNet ones.. that’s where it shines. Nice video .. keep up the good work!

    • @BMinusDemos
      @BMinusDemos Місяць тому

      Not being able to edit the sound in the software after it’s already on the pedal was a gripe I had too. A couple of the demos I had watched made it seem like you could do that, so I spent forever one day trying to figure that out. I do think ToneNet is the saving grace for this ecosystem. Most of the captures I got sounded good. I’m just not into captures. And thanks! Glad you liked it.

      Agreed. Even when you record with something like this if you have even a little bit of experience with mixing then most people won’t know the difference when they hear it.

      Agreed. I jumped on because of the price point thinking it would be an absolute steal for what you get. It just wasn’t for me. I have a new amp solution for next week’s video that I am super psyched about!

    I agree regarding the pain in the arse process of finding a good capture, however, when you find a few good ones its absolute gold

    • @BMinusDemos
      @BMinusDemos Місяць тому

      I really think some changes to the ToneX UI to make it more efficient could do wonders for this. And that’s totally possible because all they’d have to do is push out an update. And the captures do sound good. Some of them sound really really good. It just always felt a bit like a chore.

      @@BMinusDemos This is the reason why brick that is UAFX Dream 65 and others sell well: no fiddling with apps and finding a good capture. It is as plug and play as it gets and gets you going as quickly as hooking up a couple of patch cables. However, the UA stuff is beyond inflexible.

    • @BMinusDemos
      @BMinusDemos 18 днів тому

      @quiksilver78 Totally agree. I think that’s where something like the Walrus Audio ACS1 hits a nice sweet spot. It’s not infinitely flexible but it’s not as static as the UA stuff.

    Yea, sometimes you just need something that works. Sometimes getting the best makes sense. I have had great luck with Joyo drive pedals. M-vave makes good stuff, as well as Caline. Tons of brands.

    Thanks for the demo! Ive been looking into a 1312 for a little while to be "my Rat-type pedal". I used to have an Arc Effects Soothsayer and miss how crunchy it could get. I've currently got an EQD Life V2, but it's not doing it for me. The 1312 sounds SO perfect.

      The 1312 is incredible. And with it having a bunch of different clipping options you can really dial it in to fit perfectly in your rig.
