I've watched it over and over but I can't figure out how you have your recording set up for the initial drum part. Are you recording that as a sample? It looks like you are creating an individual sequence for each drum pad, live. How in the world are you doing that?!

oh come on now dude, killed it with this vid. i've always wanted to give a blackbox a go especially since you can pre determine loop lengths so you dont have to worry about closing the loop like with a regular looper. the only other question now is how can you adapt a midi foot pedal so you dont have to launch the loop with your hands (thats always the hard part)

I really like that controller. While I have a Beatstep I can use, I prefer the 4x4 layout and the sensitivity looks nice. I would be interested in knowing your finger drumming setup. I have a Roland MV-1 with the same pad layout, so might make me a better finger drummer. On a side note, what is your Stomp preset like that you use for bass. I really need to get that going on my Helix so I can swap between guitar and bass that fast. Great content. Keep it up!

Aw yeah! I have that exact controller and I love how lightweight and compact it is, while still being really high quality. I just bought a Deluge and I’m trying to work out whether I still want to keep the blackbox or not. When I did have these set up, I had 12 pads set up to control 4 loops. For each loop: one pad to clear, one pad to record, one pad to play/stop. This way you have full control over your loops during a performance. I also had loops pre-set to different lengths. This way I could choose which length loop I wanted to record. And you can always make loops shorter than their pre-set length by pressing the record-pad while it’s recording. I really loved that you can set the loop quantization as well: I always set mine to two bars, which gave me a lot more room to press pads in advance

You also have high pass and low pass filters for each pad/instrument instead of EQ, plus pitch change option, envelope ADSR for changing the length of samples, and you can route each pad/instrument out 8 individual mono outputs for post processing, or any combination of stereo and mono outputs. Then we can talk about poly-rhythms with different step lengths and divisions for non-repetative grooves. And then the best part of all, pristine audio quality, fantastic ADC and DAC. Sequencing and song construction too. more... The BlackBox is the greatest's musician sampler ever made, all the necessities and none of the complexities, all in a one-day learning curve. All other samplers are very complex and designed for the non-musician to tweak everything and humanize the music...same thing a musician can do by just playing in samples.

Very well presented, I am having trouble getting going with this very task, this is more helpful than any other video - or the manual! I didn't think of how helpful it would be to have a basic drum track (even just a click), before sampling a loop - off to get one programmed in now...

Listening to a lot of your jams and digging the approach to looping. I'm looking into BB and line 6 stomp. Does the bass simulated tone come factory on the Line 6 or is it a downloaded IR.

T.J. - love your videos. I have a question: I own the Boss RC5 and HX-Stomp XL; I recently bought a used Maschine Mikro. Is there any way to sync Maschine Mikro with the Boss Looper RC5 to achieve what you've done with the Korg, or do you need a MIDI drum machine? Thank you

I just started getting into looping, and especially from a guitarist perspective such videos are very interesting, keep it up. Also your presentation style is very good. P.S. - Your synth playing isn't as bad as you think.

It's a great trick, even for a song, not performance only. You can basically emulate what the syntakt does with its effect track. You record whatever you want to globally apply effects to and at some point, you just mute everything else and have only the one to modulate on. Then back to the rest of the song when finished. I will definitely use it in the future. Thanks.

Hi T.J. many thanks for this precious explanation 🥰 just a quick question about the "time-glitch" that you show at 08:02. I see it happens when you: 1) hit PLAY on the Volca > 2) step on the Rc5 (recording thus the first loop). I see though that in your intro song (lovely) you are there able to overdub the bass at a random point (the screen on the Boss turns orange), without the glitch you show at 08.02. Do I understand correctly that this glitch only happens when I start on the Volca, but not when I start on the Boss? Am I free to overdub at anytime without glitch by beginning on the Boss? What if I alway begin on the Boss, recording an emptly loop, and then overdubbing? I hope it's clear and thank you anyway for your time! All the best from Italy

That bass fit in nice and smooth. Great stuff!

You can do something even cooler with the Stomp and the Blackbox. You can use MIDI pad record. There are a few settings to change on the BB. Once done, you just have to set up the pads to the length of bars you want (or set to global if all the same) and then you program buttons on the Stomp to send certain MIDI notes. I've done it on a Stomp XL, where I have buttons for: go to next pad, record pad, play pad, or clear pad. The other button I cycle through snapshots to change my tone. By clearing pads as you go, you can somewhat endlessly loop hands free. The nice part is that when you clear a pad, the recording is still on the SD card, so you can use it as a way to audition a bunch of ideas and later mine what you want off the card. I've also used it and its song mode to record guitar parts to go with parts on my Roland Verselab or MC707. Great little sampling buddy!

What audio interface are you using? That one does not jump out as one I have seen.

Im having issues when I load a sample there is no sound unless I change from sample or clip to granular. Then the sound is chopped. I’m also running dual tonex one pedals into the mix in and the sound quality isn’t the best, seems I have to crank the gain up. Any help would be appreciated

Very nice! Always something good comes out when jamming with the digi and a guitar! By the way - the FX on the digitakt stop working as soon as you hit the stop button TWICE! You then need to either press PLAY, or hit any of the track buttons (like you already did, and then the fx were back again) or hit the STOP button only ONCE when stopping. The digitakt always needs an impulse to run the FX on an incoming signal ;)

Nice tut.. might be a little sketchy in a live or improv setting, but with practice I guess you could get pretty quick with it. Also, as a note you could set up a few performance fx tracks by setting up triggers for repeats and have param locks and such pre set in the sequencer of this track, So when you pull it in your sequence will auto mangle. Could have several tracks with different "mangle" sequences you could switch between. Just have to copy track sound and paste to other tracks.. Cool idea.. got me thinkin a bit. Even not live, its a quick way to generate alt sequences.

Just demonstrates the recording capabilities from D2, quite basic, didn’t need a full video for that tbh, it’s not live looping at all

Do you have to press record on the one? Or can you also set a record trig, like on the octatrack?

Just thinking, if you set up your track 16 to have a trig on the 1 (before recording) and then record into it as you usually do does that mean that once you assign the sample recorded to track 16 it should play back automatically? Not at the digi atm but in theory it should work

cool,,, I think that the problem though is that the digitakt now Is working only as a recorder and playback of this loop,, if you'd like to record another loop while playing from diigtakt the one you recorded, I think that this in not possible,right?
