Oh damn, big fan Rhett! I also really want a Digitakt to use in this context. Guitars plus grooveboxes is my latest obsession and I'm glad to see I'm not the only one toying with it :) Cheers man!
Cool, a bit more versatile than my current dawless setup, which consists of a Yamaha THR and a Novation Rhythm circuit. The line out of the THR goes to the RC in, and the RC out goes to the aux in on the THR. So the RC is a sample based drummachine, which also serves as a, be it very simple looper. Easy but fun. I’m also working on a pedalboard with two separate paths, going through my hx effects and boomerang looper, but haven’t figured that out completely. Thanks for sharing
These are inspiring to build my own dawless setup. I have a Headrush mx5, Novation circuit tracks, Boss RC5 on my pedalboard, but no mixer. That could work the same way!
@@tjguardino it's pretty great, the touch screen is very intuitive and easy to use. The IRs were pretty bad but after downloading good ones then I like it. If I had to do it over I'd probably spend for the HX Stomp after all
thanks for the vid! I'm going to try a really similar setup but with a Zoia instead of the Stomp. (it's what I've got on hand). would love to see your deep dive on syncing the RC5 and the KO
Must be something in the water? Hahaha Awesome video!! I just recently put together a simular rig only I wanted to incorporate keys as well. I eventually managed to get it all on one pedalboard and like you, I am a happy camper too... Keep 'Em Jammin'
Great demo, I'm trying to work out a similar set-up using a Roland MC-101 and Boss RC-500... Still deciding whether I prefer to have the master clock from the groovebox or the looper. Using the groovebox as masterclock works well but I hate not being able to start a loop using the looper! Thanks for sharing your rig, always good to see how others get it done.
Ahh good point! I sometimes use the RC-5 with a Korg Volca Sample which doesn’t have MIDI out so I use the looper as the clock source. Both options work great! I’ll make a video using the looper as clock source soon :)
Very cool work flow! I’m trying something similar, without a mixer. I wish the HX stomp could do sidechain compression for the Send/Return AUX or Line in/out & the instrument inputs.
In additional to the synch requests, could you do an expanded/updated version to include a) powering this setup and b) how you'd configure for a live solo looping gig. Not that this wasn't great - love the no-nonsense approach - but the "this is how I'd take this to a bar/club/coffeehouse" would take it to 11. Thank you for taking the time.
I wonder if the blackbox could substitute the ko2 and looper and mixer all at once; maybe with a midi controller added to it for mixing and finger drumming and midi pedal to start and stop the live looping of the guitar. It could also allow to record scenes and switch to a chorus section
Deep dives on your chain, how youre dialing in tones, etc would be excellent. Honestly I love the idea of a DAWless setup. When you are recording do you just use the fresh tracks you're getting out of this or do you have a specific production software that interacts best with this setup?
Awesome I’ll get going on that! This setup is great for jamming and live use, but in the future I might end up recording each track into my DAW instead of a mixer for more recording flexibility. Also.. if I had a more robust mixer like the Tascam Model 12 I could even do some advanced mixing without a DAW
This sounds great! Good choice of tools. Im trying to replicate this kinda setup in loopy pro on ipad but then the tactile hardware side of things is making my wallet itch!
Great video! I also have HX Stomp and RC-5 but I normally put RC-5 in the FX loop. Do you go out to RC-5 line level or instrument Level? I wonder if RC-5 is ok w ith line level input. Many thanks for the video and your answer.
Ooh good question!! I usually go instrument level into the RC-5 but since there are so many folks that use this thing with all kinds of instruments, I imagine it would sound fine going line level out of the stomp!
hi! i just got RC5 but i don't think it's receiving the timing data from my ko-ii... is there a setting that i need to change before it can start syncing? awesome video and thanks in advance!
Oooh good question! I can trigger different song parts with the drum machine but the looper here is bit too limited to do that. I know with the Boss RC-600 you can create whole song structures loop them in sync with your drums though!
@@tjguardino thanks. I'm looking to get a mixer because I need an extra input and output to use one of my pedals as a hardware send. This might solve it.
do you have a preferred way to jump between sections of a song, you know move into a bridge or chorus? or when looping does it usually keep the same progression throughout?
@@profkillbot at the moment I don’t, if I had a more robust looper I could though! If you had a multitrack looper you could (in theory) program MIDI CCs from your drum machine to tell it when to switch to verse, chorus, etc. I’m hoping to try this soon!
Yes! Everything is mixed in the mixer and then sent out a stereo out. For live performance, that would go to a PA system but for UA-cam it goes through my audio interface and I also just run my mic into the interface as well :) recorded in my DAW and basic vocal editing applied
Oooooh great question :) I would say as a pure sampler I prefer the ep-133 (polyphony, built-in mic, awesome little screen) but if I'm using a guitar I would prefer the Circuit Rhythm (1/4'' inputs, proper input monitoring, looping)
Mostly the channel count.. I can really only squeeze 5 independent channels out of this thing, which is plenty to have fun with but sometimes I wish I had access to a few more :)
I doubt that the RC-5 has the same functionality as the RC-600, but I'd love to see a video on how you would attempt to create a guitar loop and THEN have a subordinate unit (I really dislike the old metaphors used in control hierarchy) follow suit. In other words...the guitar loop dictates the BPM and bar. ps::UA-camr Rhett Shull is in the comments...now you HAVE to follow through.💩
Oooh yes good call, I actually did this earlier! I was using the Korg Volca Sample with the Boss RC-5, and since the Volca doesn’t have MIDI clock out I had to use the RC-5 as my clock source and the Volca followed it. It was a little trickier to set up but it did work great once I figured it out. I’ll try to do a video on it soon!
