Mt. Wilson Toll Road - Gravel Cycling in Los Angeles
Has the time changed? Are your Zwift rides getting boring? Ours were. So, last weekend we decided to take the gravel bikes into the mountains.
Henninger Flats is a popular destination that's easily accessible by day hike or bikes, just North of Eaton Canyon in Pasadena. Henninger Flats also has access to Mt. Wilson Toll Road, which eventually connects to Mt. Wilson where there is a pit stop called the Cosmic Cafe (open on most weekends, check hours).
Descending back down, there are a choice of routes (dirt or paved). This time due to a migraine and some weird vision issues, we decided to take the easy way down (Mt. Wilson Redbox Road to Angeles Crest Highway 2).
If you're in the area, go ahead and try this route but be prepared for a lot of climbing! Wherever you are, make sure to always treat yourself nice, get outside, get some sunshine and some fresh air.

Mt. Lowe Road to Inspiration Point - Gravel Cycling Los Angeles

Some say Fall brings out the turtlenecks in people's wardrobes. Others lament the loss of daylight in the evenings. One thing is for sure: if you wake up in the morning and go into the mountains, you won't be bummed. We took this weekend as an opportunity to do just that, squeezing in a quick ride up Mt. Lowe Road to Inspiration Point. The climb is about 7 miles (depending on where you start) a...
Riding Chantry Flats on Road Bikes - Re-Opening week Oct 2024

Chantry flats opened this past week! This is a road I've been wanting to ride for a while but it's been closed for a few years due to damage and erosion caused by wildfires. Now thanks to the national forest service and many local volunteer groups it's finally re-opened! The paved road climb was about 4 miles and 1200ish feet of climbing. Beautifully maintained pavement, epic views and nice twi...
2024 Mammoth Gran Fondo - 102 Miles Road Cycling in Beautiful Mammoth Lakes, CA

Mammoth Gran Fondo is the second in a series of two awesome California Mountain Centuries. Following Tour de Big Bear, this ride is two miles longer with less total climbing, but starts at a higher elevation (around 8,000 ft). While the air is thin and the weather can be unpredictable, the scenery in and around Mammoth Lakes makes you feel like you're on another planet. The ride is offered in t...
Cycling Pasadena to Hollywood - Vlog Style Weekend Ride

Took some familiar roads and some new ones this weekend on our way to Hollywood looking for stars and glory. We didn't see any famous people but we did have a nice ride with some good climbs and a refreshing break from the oppressive heat we have been experiencing this summer. Took a different approach this time and left the go-pro at home so this is more of a vlog style recap with more updates...

Back at it again with the white Vans. We hit Big Bear Lake up and it hit back. This event is near and dear to my heart, as it was one of the first big events that got me into road cycling. This year was our 1st time riding the 100 mile course, and it didn't disappoint. The first half of the ride went pretty smooth and fast, we arrived at the halfway point at the top of Onyx in just around 3 hrs...

Filmed the day after stage 20 in the 2024 Tour de France; Inspired by American rider Matteo Jorgenson's awesome hill climb performance, we set out to do some climbing of our own. Mount willski schwillski (as the locals call it) or Mount "Wilson" as the historical society prefers, is the only man-made mountain in the trans-san Gabriel mountain range found in Ft. Impressive on gravel bikes!
It's good practice to post route in the description. Some of us might be inspired and want to do the same ride.
@@juanposada9319 thanks for the feedback. I might post routes next time. For this ride it's super easy however: just follow Mt. Lowe road all the way up and turn right at the sign for inspiration point. You can't miss it. Happy riding!
Do you by chance have a GPX file for this ride?
WOW! Definitely will need to ride it. Thanks.
getting a migraine on a ride like that I would absolutely trip out, don't know how you stayed so non-chalant. Something about the sun + altitude + dehydration that always gives me migraines. Blue-lighting blocking sunglasses like SPY Happy Boost help out alot though
@@McBirdec thank you for the suggestion! Yeah it sucked but I actually felt more comfortable on the bike vs hiking in my gravel shoes. The road back was the right call and all things considered it was still a pretty fun ride.
Inspired by your video, I tried this route today and it was a hell of an experience. Parts of the trail were very rocky, and parts were overrun by rockslides. Other than that it was a blast!
@@Allyoucaneatmeat that's awesome! I'm glad you had fun!! Tons of acorns on the ground up there too huh?
@ Yeah. If I were to repeat it, I would stop at the campsite, enjoy it, then turn back. Beyond the campsite, the trail was too harsh tbh.
@Allyoucaneatmeat it's an adventure that's for sure! I hear you on the technical parts further up, but I do enjoy that sometimes as a break from the road bike. The campground does have a pretty sweet view I think it would be cool to bring lunch and picnic there.
never ceases to amaze me how all of this is IN LA... its not a trip, its not a huge plan...its morning activity and you can get back to your normal day later. I cant think of another city you can do that in..
@@drsus0 yes exactly!!! LA sucks for cycling right?! 😜
@ the worst for cycling , hate it :)
Just did this ride yesterday. The climb is no joke!
@@nicholaslopez4657 it's beautiful though right!?
did this last week wednesday morning, climb was beautiful but going down was tough man lots of sharp rocks real fun tho
Great footage. Ive watched some of your rides, could you tell us where is a good place to park on your rides.
Thank you! Most of the Pasadena/Altadena rides have street parking in the neighborhood. Just make sure to check the signs. There's also public parking lot at Eaton canyon but it fills up quickly on weekends.
Awesome video. What are your guys’ gear setups like for climbing like this? My gravel bike easiest gear is 40/45 but I’m wondering if I would need 40/51 or maybe even easier
@@ygoeb13 thank you! We're both using GRX 2x11 with the 46/30 front chainrings. I use a 11-40t rear cassette and Juli's on a 11-36. It's toughest near the bottom before the campground but then it mellows out some.
@ awesome thank you! I’m gonna try to get up there next weekend. Do you have the Strava file or GPS file?
@@ygoeb13 Yeah Go explore! It's pretty simple you shouldn't need directions once you're on the trail. Just head right through the campground once you get to Henninger and follow the trail signs for "Mt. Wilson Toll road" Have fun it's beautiful!
@ we did this ride yesterday and loved it - thanks for the suggestion!!
You can sleep at Henniger, I did about 25 years ago before the MWBA Pancake Breakfast. A couple of trail options that are not as chunky would be the Mt Lowe way down. Its that tunnel to the left just after you pass the TV towers.
@@hardmtnbiker that's good to know you can overnight at Henninger thanks for the info. We've taken Mt. Lowe down before but since I was having some trouble with blurry vision and a headache the paved route was just the easiest and quickest on that day. Thanks for watching!
@ it’s a rough descent on a rigid gravel bike with gravel tires. I’m going to try it with my bigger gravel tires with CushCore. That should help
Some friends and I have been riding up this since the 1980's. Please bikers continue to be respectful of the other trail users; there are many regulars and going slow on the downhill and having a bell on your bike is very much appreciated and needed to avoid the hikers/runners/dogs, etc. since there are some sharp turns here and there (mostly just from the bridge up to Henninger).
@@peter1234669 hey thanks for watching! Yes I agree, we hike as well and appreciate the consideration too. We both have trail bells we use when descending. Happy riding!
If you don’t mind would you be able to give me directions etc I’m not from the area
@@raymondencinas3067 The ride starts at the top of Eaton Canyon in Altadena.
Do you wear a blood pressure or cardiogram monitor? Maybe have your cholesterol checked, too? Migraines need to be checked out. Sometimes coffee/caffeine can alleviate a migraine.
Four weeks after a broken clavicle and almost ready to ride again, definitely needed this video to hype me up again!
@@peggz223 yes! Get out there and live it up!
All over Pasadena highland park above the Rose Bowl good times. Best vegan donuts in the game
Thinking of doing the CA pass challenge next year (big bear gravel 50 and the 102 for mammoth) adjusting to elevation for tuff gravel event the following weekend. This video is helpful in seeing the route and what to expect .
@@sccxvelo that's awesome! I'm glad the video helped you check it out. The elevation could certainly be felt but I had a good time anyway and the views are pretty epic. Good luck on your rides thanks for watching!
Wow thanks for sharing those views!!!
woow. ive been doing this trail for Yeears!!!!!!since like year 2000 i believe when i discovered this trail. Gravel bike i wont use ill stick with full suspension. But 2021 was my last time i rode it my bike was ruined and gave it away so as of now im still not riding but i have lots of photos ive taken there. THERE ARE bears there everyone, ive see at least 2, ive seen their scat in parts of the fire road since 2018 ish. ive seen one climb up the ledge across that deep chasm that is to the left. it is beautiful part of LA. so folks check out the Monrovia fireroad that one is awesome it goes to White saddle and you can continue for more uphill. also the Henninger Flats using the Mt wilson toll road another beauty.
@@logos37 yes it's an awesome trail! We have seen the wildlife and that's one of the additional reasons we use trail bells. Henninger Flats to Mt. Wilson is another fun one in this area for sure. We have a ride and maybe a video of that route coming up soon.
@@tronsteezz OK thank you
That's me getting the champagne shower at the end! Great seeing you guys on the course!
@@digivation awesome man! Great job, I had to put the clip in. Thanks for watching, maybe we'll see you out on the road again sometime.
can you please post your route? 🙂
Be careful those are yeti prints They don’t like the sound of bicycles. 😮
Where do you start from? And is the ride on Strava?
@@FantaconeBoxWorksCBG If you want less climbing you can start at the trailhead near Millard campground at the top of Cheney trail road. If you want more some people start from Alta Loma drive down below. I haven't been posting my Strava link, but I may do a GPS route if there's interest. Thanks for watching!
Does not count unless you start at Loma Alta
Awesome video! What kind of rear lights are you using?
@@3lPrieto316 it's from Olight I believe it's called "seemee"
That climb sucks, just stupid steep in the start but at least it mellows out a little bit once you get past IP and go all the way up to the tunnel then up to Mt Wilson Observatory. 2X gearing is a must unless you have a 1X with a huge 50 cassette or small Mtn chainring. No need for gravel bikes geared towards flat terrain in SoCal.
@@hardmtnbiker yeah I'm with you on the 2x chainring setup. I like the range and drivetrain efficiency. I like the climb however, it's tough but feels good to knock it out 💪
@@tronsteezz I love the views but the trails are not the best for gravel bike tires.
@@hardmtnbiker we ride mountain bikes too! We'll do some MTB rides soon. I love all the bikes
@@tronsteezz Have you guys done Puerco or Zuma Ridge in Malibu? Great gravel climbs!
@Hokum48 we haven't! Thank you for the suggestions, I'll add them to our list
been doing this one every week the last month or so. I like to start at the bottom of chainy rd. pretty tough climb, but had no idea it got to a 17% grade.
@@patmarconett apparently I had no idea it hit 17% either 🤣
Mt. Lowe is 100% the least fun climb in LA, but for some reason always calls me back
@@allenstewart4032 it's tough for sure, but the views are pretty good 👍
I’ve been getting the itch to try this one again. Started from Pasadena on the last round, but didn’t have the legs to make it to the top. I recently got a wider cassette and might have to try a start from the trailhead after watching this!
@waterpolo909 yes the 18-19ish percent up the paved bits is rough. I think it gets a lot more pleasant once the dirt begins however.
She's so cute, pumping those little legs. You're her best companion!
Thanks for stopping by our Cafe at Chantry Flat. Adams Pack Station. Please come back. What a great video. I, too, thought it was ironic that a Bobcat vehicle was parked there on our our 1st weekend open after 4 years.

You missed the climb to the Helipad! EXTRA CREDIT and one of the best views... So glad Chantry is back open, but not happy about these Hot October evenings! Chantry is exposed and will cook you certain points of the day.
@@creativeclectic thanks for the heads up! I do plan to go back to chantry some time soon, possibly with gravel bikes so we can try and connect some of the unpaved roads we like. We'll check out the helipad as well. 🤙

The road is still showing closed and won't let me create a custom route, however the ride up chantry is very simple: Just start at the intersection of Santa Anita Road and Sierra Madre Blvd and head North on Santa Anita. It turns into chantry flat road at the gate shown in the video. Happy riding!
@@tronsteezz thank you!
Dang! It's finally open. I've ridden up to the closed gate about a dozen times thinking they'll never open this thing again. Which ride do you like best? This one or TDBB?
@@logictd567 that's a tough one, there's things I really like about both rides and I had lots of fun at each, even though Big Bear was a little harder for me. I think I'm leaning towards TDBB because I've done it a few more times and so it feels a little more like a "home game" if that makes sense. I totally recommend both however if you get the chance the scenery is out of this world in mammoth. Have fun either way!

Great job, guys, and it looked like you were carrying an excellent pace on those climbs! BTW, how steep were those climbs? They looked painful on your Garmin's display!
@@Tanstaafl1976 thank you! The gradient actually wasn't too bad, I think Garmin exaggerates a little on the display, I remember most of them averaging somewhere between 4-6% with one or two sections nearing 8%. The elevation fluctuates between 6-8k feet however so the thinner air makes it feel harder than it would at lower elevation 😅
