- Back at it again with the white Vans. We hit Big Bear Lake up and it hit back. This event is near and dear to my heart, as it was one of the first big events that got me into road cycling. This year was our 1st time riding the 100 mile course, and it didn't disappoint.
The first half of the ride went pretty smooth and fast, we arrived at the halfway point at the top of Onyx in just around 3 hrs. The second half was quite a bit tougher. I messed up my fueling, got a stomach ache, and then leg cramps from not enough salt. Luckily my friends were there to support me and we all rolled in through the finish line together.
I highly recommend this ride, whatever distance you choose. The scenery is beautiful and it's a good time.
Elapsed Time: 8hrs 4min
Moving Time: 6hrs 37min
Very cool. That was my daughter and I with the signs and mister cheering you guys on at the top of onyx summit. Congratulations to all the riders that finished the 100 miles!
Thank you so much for your support! 🙏
Last time I did that ride I ended up in the Hospital (nice hospital, btw). A combination of heat, meds, dehydration, and extremely low Potassium level (the latter two due to the meds). It's always a good ride, especially since the locals really go all out to support it and cheer everyone on!
@@pvasiliou3948 oh no! I'm sorry to hear about your experience, but I'm glad it didn't deter you! Keep up the good work and having fun!
WOW! So much climbing. Maybe ill get there next year? Im 3 months into cycling and love it!
Pickle juice bro. from the feed. it'll help cramps
I'm surprised you didn't have a shot of me chilling on the side of the road on the Onyx return climb! I've done the event 4 or 5 times now, and never have I ever cramped so bad. Took me twice as long to finish that last big climb than the previous year. Legs were just not having it and were seizing/cramping without warning
@@theFatTubist yeah dude it was hot that day! I feel you on the cramps. It was challenging for sure, but we did it right!? That's what matters.
@@tronsteezz 💯
Looks fun, definitely want to do this next year. Have you done the Mammoth fondo? Wondering which is best between the two
We have done the 70mi course at Mammoth. Comparing the two 70mi distances I much prefer big bear, however we haven't done the 100mi in mammoth. We'll try it!
Great riding! I road near you guys out on the course. So hard. So fun!
@@carver78 yes definitely! Was that you in the speed suit? I was jealous, I definitely over packed for this one! Lessons learned I guess.
@@tronsteezz Ha. It got hot on the back! I was in the black triathlon suit. I pop up for a split second at 1:28. I’m not sure I was mentally prepared for the back side climbing. Ha. Watching your video, I’m realizing that I should have definitely stopped at Onyx 1. We had same stops as you otherwise. Looking forward to next year.
@@carver78 yeah it was rough for sure. Good seeing you out there. Congrats!
@@tronsteezz likewise!
Well done. FYI, when we ride 100 mile event and shorter training rides, we always have Emergen-C, 1000mg with vitamin C in our water bottles and carry extra in our pockets. Never have had cramps when using Emergen_C. Comes in several favors.
Nice. Thx for capturing the sights and reliving the memorable day! Heading up to Mammoth this year? Think I spotted the Cal Pass Challenge number plate. If so, see you there!
@@JesusDavila74 yes no problem! Planning on riding mammoth as well, you're correct.
@@tronsteezz - Excellent. I hope we encounter dry roads this year!
Im thinking about doing the Santa Barbara ride. Likely going solo.
@@jfloresdrums thinking about that one too. Gibraltar looks gnarly. Say hi if you see us.
That is me on the other side of the road at 5:36 5:37 in the red and green watermelon jersey and yellow helmet.
That's awesome! Great ride and good eye to catch yourself so quickly!
Very nice. What bike are you riding?
@@planttheseed2129 The bike I'm on is a specialized Tarmac the SL6 sport model with Shimano 105 groupset. I did upgrade the wheels to Roval C38 as well
I think you’re the guy I was talking to afterwards. You do train stuff?
Hey yeah we were sitting next to you! My buddy is the train guy, really enjoyed meeting you and chatting bikes and training.
100 miles and 8k of climbing. Respect!
How long did it take you?
@@mikebayless4268 our total time ended up being about 8hrs
That's about normal for 100 miles, not spectacular 😕!
@@geneyus6411 this was our first century. thanks for the encouragement? 🙏
