If you love fountain pens and inks, this is for you.
Welcome to onemorepen where I provide first impressions and reviews of different fountain pens and inks. I focus on the everyday writing experience of the average person. Of course there are many really expensive pens and inks out there, and that is great if you can afford it. But you don't have to spend a lot of money to have a great pen and enjoy your writing; fountain pens are for everyone, and in my channel I review those pens and inks that the everyday person (and occasional fountain pen fanatic) might enjoy.

In this video I unbox a Faber-Castell Grip fountain pen with a medium nib that I recently purchased and compare it to one with a fine nib. However, upon unboxing I am presented with a strange situation... it appears some of the cartridges have been used and I also find ink inside the barrel of this supposedly brand new pen. Did someone use the cartridges and reseal the package? Or is there some...

Pelikan Jazz Noble First Impressions
I picked one of these up about three months ago- nice pen for quick stuff at my desk- very reliable- always ready to write. I don't find it that comfortable, because I have big hands. For short quick things it is perfect, but not good for long writing sessions. Your review is quite good.
I agree. It's nice for quick notes, but I won't be writing any novels with it.
Mashallah subhanallah kya chij hai wow very nice pen
The Petrol Al-Star is one of my favorite Fountain Pen that I own. I was using it daily for work but decided it is too pretty to bang up on a daily basis. Especially with it being a limited edition. Big fan of the Safari-Al-Star-Lx series of Lamy Pens.
I have heard of quite a few people looking for the Petrol and cannot find it anymore, so I am very happy thay I found one.
Where did you purchase this…..I could not locate at Goulet nor Jet Pens, please
I purchased from Writegear in South Africa, but it is no longer in their catelogue so perhaps stock is an issue.
Here are some measurements. From the Cheap as Chips eBay special Digital Calipers: Diameters: Safari: Plastic (matte finish; Strawberry) Top of Cap (above clip): 12.8mm (It screws on or something Top of Cap (below clip): 13.1mm Base of Cap: 14.5mm (14.2mm on Lamy Vista or shiny White Safari) Distance from bottom of cap to start of cap liner: 35.2mm Top of Barrel (by section; it is round here) 12.6mm (12.2mm on Lamy Vista or shiny White Safari) Bottom of Barrel: 9.8mm to 11.6mm (it isn't round) AL Star: Al (Polished Aluminum, Petrol) Top of Cap (above clip): 14.9mm Top of Cap (below clip): 14.9mm (they just drill holes for the clip, apparently) Base of Cap: 14.9mm Distance from bottom of cap to start of cap liner: 21.8mm Top of Barrel (by section) 11.5mm to 12.7mm (it isn't round) (Note the Al-Star's threads in the barrel are on an inserted plastic piece, not part of the Aluminum body.) Bottom of Barrel: 11.5mm to 12.7mm (it isn't round) Another difference of note: the black plastic ring between barrel and section is attached to the section (it's a separate piece) on the plastic Safaris, but it is part of the threaded plastic piece on the AL-Star. The section that comes with the AL-Star does have the space for the black plastic ring. They do appear to be using the same molding for all the sections. It's interesting the matte Safaris are a bit thicker than the shiny ones. The plastic cap liner is longer on the Al-Star.
Hey thanks for helping with these measurements. Your cheap as chips callipers beat my still have to buy a cheap as chips callipers. It is really interesting to see the differences between the Safari and AL-star, but I am really surprised by the differences between the Safari and Vista! I would never have guessed. Thanks for sharing this with us.
@@onemorepen It seems to be more a difference between Matte plastic Safari and Shiny plastic (including Vista) Safari.
. that "step" = Lamy Safari's grip
. But seriously . i use my Safari charcoal with the Vista grip 😏
. HANDS DOWN the Safari is exquisitly Made . 😘
Just discovered your channel. I am a Lamy Safari fan since many years. I have Safaris, Al-Stars and LX's. This was a very good video sir. Greetings from Belgium + a sub.
Thank you, it is really good to hear from someone in Belgium! I have not been a fan of Lamy from the start, but I am now really getting to like their pens! It is addictive .
@@onemorepen Belgium + 1
@@onemorepen For the price, the Lamy Safari offers more than any other pen. Ink window, interchangeable nibs of good quality (even 14 ct gold if you wish so), reliable clip, cartridge or converter at your choice, and in case you break it you will only lose a small amount of money...🙂
@@tim9059 👍🙏
@@onemorepen It would be great to correspond (snail mail with fountain pen) with an Australian. I don't have an Australian among my penpals yet. Would that interest you?
The black nib does look nice on the AL Star. I do prefer the AL Star to the Safari for whatever reason.
The AL-star is definitely a step up from the Safari, but have you used the Lx? I will post a review on the Lamy Lx next, but I feel this pen is also a slight step up from the AL-star and is now my favourate.
@@onemorepen No, though I do have an Aion and a Studio.
I didn't know about the extra girth of the AL-Star. Thanks for pointing that out.
I love it. I did two eyedropper conversions on it. Not without its issues but for the price I can't complain.
Love your accent but I really had to chuckle at “salad on cat”.
And now I will never be able to look at that ink the same again.
My Vista is around 13 y.o. by now, it's barrel and cap are yellowed out but the section is as clear as new. Some time ago I ordered some spare parts from AliExpress and found a transparent feeder which fitted nicely, now my Vista is totally clear 😎 When you can't see the holes in your letters it's time to get a finer nib, exactly what happened to you in the writing sample is why I don't like broader nibs, even most M are too wide for me, of course, having a tiny handwriting doesn't help either 😂 Cats are the best fountain pen connoisseurs, one more reason to prefer them over dogs 😅
Wow, a transparent feed would really be interesting to see. Normally my handwriting is larger when I use the broad nib, but the dots on the writing pad kind of push me to confirm to its size, which is why I really prefer black note pads - but cannot always easily find them.
You are absolutely right ! Wish lamy made a new version of vista, sealed, so people could eyedrop it... But since safari and vista is a school oriented fountain pen and since lamy wants to sell cartridges, i don't think they will ever made that... We can only hope for it, maybe one day, if we make an online petition, i am sure many lamy safari fans want this. Lamy vista eye 👁🗨 is a nice name and since mitsubishi uni has now bought the lamy is a nice compo cause uni-ball eye rollerball is i think the their most popular product. Nice hat btw !!
Cosmo, like his person, had an adorable mustache 😊. Thanks for the updated reviews of your Lamy pens.
The Rollerball barrel, which doesn't have windows, fits the Vista. Easy enough job to put a blob of transparent glue on the safety 'breather' hole in the end to seal it.
Wow, that's a great idea. I don't have a rollerball but will keep it in mind. Thanks!
Love cats in the videos. Cosmo is a beautiful cat.
And he knows it...
@@onemorepen And I am happy for him.😃
I've only recently got into this hobbby and I have a question. Why is everyone so fond of eyedropper pens? To me it's as we would say "six of one, half dozen of the other".
Many people ask for it mainly because of much more ink capacity instead of normal methods (cartridge, converter, piston fillers). Personally i don't have what to write, so it takes me weeks to empty a cartridge, but i like to see the whole body inked and the ink moving inside, so i like eyedropped demonstrators. Basically i like demonstrators only if they can get eyedropped, and eyedropers only if they are demonstrators. I don't like at all to see a cartridge or a converter, or any other mechanism inside a clear demonstrator and i don't care if a pen can be eyedropped when i can't see the ink.
Not me, we all have different needs and for me, the less ink the better. Reason? My handwriting is tiny, so I need finer nibs and less ink. With eyedroppers or vacuum filling systems my pens could spend (literally) years inked. The other important reason is that my ink (and pen) collection is huge (+- 130 so far of both), so, I like to rotate them as much as possible.
This is the same for me. While a demonstrator eyedropper is beautiful, I rotate my pens too often for such a large ink capacity.
I think I might can explain the odd choice for the "window" on the Vista. They more than likely use the same mold for both and to save money they just change the plastic/resin colors without having to make an entirely new mold for the barrel. I bought a Lamy Al-Star a couple of months ago and it writes pretty well but Platinum is fast becoming my favorite brand. I splurged and bought a 3776 and damn it's amazing.
You make a good point in a way, there. It's a Vista after all not a Translucent Safari and yes a eyedropper will be cool.
I want to put a fpr 5.5 ultra flex nib on this pen. Assuming the plastic feed cant keep up which size ebonite feed should i buy?
I wish I knew! Sorry, but your question is a little too technical for my level of knowledge, but let me know if you figure it out. The Go is not my favourite pen, but the spring loaded filling mechanism is lovely.
WE HAVE TWIN CATS!!! When I saw Cosmo, I thought that I was tripping. My cat is Lila and they look like twinsies.
Cosmo will be impressed! Send a photo and I will share it on my next video. You can reach me at wernerlvdw@gmail.com
A Chinese made quasi Sheaffer fountain pen!
Well, I still reckon quasie Sheaffer is better than no Sheaffer. But yes, I do think Sheaffer can up their game a bit.
I have them all. Turqoise and green are mu favorites.
I've been using the Turqoise for a while now and I love it. When it is time to refill I will use the green.
You were close on the pronounciation of Verde. It's Spanish for "green" and pronounced "Vair-day".
Awesome, thanks. Now I learned something new!
I just inked up mine this morning for the first time. It's a really wet nib which is totally different than my Procyon.
I still have to get a Procyon. Soon...
Thank you for your video and review. I made the order for this pen last week. I was shocked with the pen quality related to a price. The store standard price in Ukraine for this pen is around $40. The pen itself feels like $5-10. Extremely cheap plastic, scratched nib, barrel looked like used before on a new pen! Never saw that crap on any Parker from my collection
Wow that is really bad. I know prices can vary, but I have seen them here in South Africa for close to half that price. And the three I have are really excellent build quality, smooth nibs - good quality for the price. Something must be wrong for you to get such a poor product. Maybe try and see if Parker will respond to a complaint?
This review is spot on and captures my thoughts of this pen perfectly! An underrated pen that is a lovely writer but has a very skinny body, that being said I still love writing with it! It has nice line character. When I find a good sale I will buy the Jotter XL ballpoint stainless steel to match my fountain pen version.
Ah, I have the XL ballpoint and it provides exactly the little extra body you need. If only they had an XL for the Jotter fountain pen...
Looks like Sheaffer’s version of Pilot Prera. Somehow, it reminds me of Prera, which is a great pen as well. Much lighter though. Cheers! :)
Seems like I need to get myself a Prera.
They are super affordable, well behaved, safe and reliable inks and can be had in every store that carries pens here in Germany. The dark green is one of my favourites, the black is a super simple and professional choice, the brown is a nice vintage vibe to me. I really like what Pelikan offers with the 4001 series.
I think the brown will be a favourite of mine for a while.
Parker: redish; Waterman: black pure; Pelikan greyish; Diamine brownish; Sheaffer blueish;
Spot on!
where slow-mo?
Oh I slowed down the writing a bit.
Because it’s so cheap, i’m planning on modifying the nib. Do you think it’s worth doing that the make it more ultra flex?
I have very little (actually none) experience in that area, but I would say Go for it. Nothing to lose and it will be interesting to see what can be done with the nib.
Afrikaner?
Inderdaad
The pattern on the pen cap mimics the architectural pattern of the Eiffel Tower, the iconic Parisian landmark. :)
Wow, did not know that. Thanks for letting me know.
@@onemorepen My pleasure. :)
I have two Grips and fortunately both are great writers.
Well, I am happy that my 2nd Grip is turning out great.
Hi , does this pen come with a cartridge converter ? I'm thinking about purchasing one , but I can't find any info about that anywhere.
It actually does not come with a converter, and I bought one later, original Cross converter and it does not fit! So I am very disappointed, I still have to follow up and check how I got the wrong one. I don't know if there is more than one size for Cross, but will find out. However, I keep refilling the cartridge and that works perfectly.
Turquoise is one of my EDC inks :) eying the brown and violet now
The brown is lovely
I have the Brown, Red, and Dark green and enjoy all. The Turquoise and Violet are interesting. Maybe samples in my future. Thanks for the video.
How long before the ink dries?
Oh I can't remember what ink I used for this review, but all my inks dry fairly quickly. I use mainly Parker, Sheaffer, Diamine, Iroshizuku and Pelikan.
❤️🙏
Enjoying your channel, yes I have finished off quite a few of those bic crystal stick Pens. They were the pens I used all through high school and college and it was kind of a personal challenge to hang on to one long enough to finish it.
I love pink inks. My favorite Iroshizuku Tsutsuji is being discontinued, so I ordered an extra bottle. This Pelikan looks so bright and lovely. Definitely going on my wish list!
I didnt expect to like it this much, it is a very vibrant pink and it shades very nicely with a broad nib. My first pink actually.
There is something soothing about this ink shade, and appreciate the short review
I bought it not expecting to like it, but it really is awesome and shades so well with a broader nib.
I bought one of these while on holiday in Greece this summer. It is my first Parker pen, and I like it so far. It's thinner that I prefer, but still quite comfortable. I was suprised by how smooth the nib was, so now my interest is piqued to find out more of the brand. Thank you for your review! I prefer the newer design, but they are both nice :)
They are really awesome pens. Which colour did you get?
@@onemorepen I got the same as you, metallic teal. It's a beautiful colour :)
I had that pen with the medium nib but I was not satisfied with it. Loaded with Parker Quink Blue the nib was really very slow to glide.
That's a real pity, usually they are quite smooth and wet.
Love seeing what fountain pens are available in different parts of the world. Thanks for the review 👍
My pleasure 😊
Thanks for sharing Cosmo with us. I'm glad you didn't disturb him (the tail swishing was his way of telling you "let me be, I'm comfy here" 😂). Love the review of a fun, affordable pen.
I own only two fontainpen, a Pilot Kakuno and a Pelikan. In Brazil sheaffer ink is cheapper than parker. I use both. Can you tell us about glass pen? Which are the brands? Where to buy etc. I think would be an interesting vídeo. Best regards from Rio de Janeiro, Mário.
Hi Mario and thanks for commenting. I love the Pilot Kakuno, it is a brilliant pen. I only have 1 glass dip pen, but I like your idea and will definitely consider it for a future video. Which Pelikan do you have?
@@onemorepen Hi! Will be very interesting a review about your glass pen. My Pelikan is M800 but my EDC is the Kakuno médium nib. I like both and use them everyday, the Pelikan in my home and the Kakuno at the office. 😃
The M800 is nice - I still have to get one. I will remember about the glass pen for the next video.
