Perfect rainy day work! Can’t test mow. If you can reassemble a carb you can probably do this kind of repair, especially with UA-cam as your constant advisor. 😉🔧👍
Jack of all trades and a master of none👍🏻
I can see that being useful for some specific applications, as you described. If you want it lighter, just have it made in titanium. Only $10-20K. 😂😉🔧👍
It has come in handy a few times
Yes, they’re great. Yes, I need (want) them. Yes, I’ve added them to my constantly growing Tool Acquisition List. Tanks fer nuttin’! 😂🔧👍 (Pardon my drool. My tool lust is showing.)
These things have been absolutely phenomenal
Not commenting because I have zero interest in this subject. Oops, there I go again, helping the algorithm! 😁 Actually, if they made one with Vette styling…
A Corvette one would look pretty sweet! But they do make one for the Ford bronco as well
FFFR (Filed For Future Reference)! Works for ME! 🔧👍
👍🏻
I don’t know, dude - one-handed wire wheeling?!!! If I tried that I’d probably be picking a lock out of my forehead. 😉 Same here - blow it out after wire wheeling and a shot of WD to lubricate and protect the works. 👍
It takes just the right combination of skill and foolishness to do what I do😂😂
I’ve actually compiled prepurchase inspection lists for lawn tractors and snowblowers from dozens of videos like this that I’ve watched. This is the FIRST one that had mentioned checking these bearings, so great job, JD, and thanks. Given the age of this unit, I suspect this is pretty typical. So it looks like if you grab the handles and lift each one in turn that’ll discover the wheel bearing wear and if you grab the auger and lift that’ll determine if the shaft bearing is shot. Both of those steps take no time and are easy and definitive. Perfect! 🔧👍
It can definitely save you from costly repairs later
Not to mention slipped valve seats, guides and seals, bent or dropped pushrods! Also, magnetos will temporarily fail until the mess is cleaned up and the engine can run at normal temp again. Then there’s the catastrophic fire which totals the engine, if not the entire machine. This is one start-of-season preventive maintenance step you definitely don’t want to skip. If the shroud doesn’t have cutouts below the fastener holes so the bolts only need to be loosened to lift the shroud off, then on any machine I work on I automatically use an angle grinder and cutoff wheel to modify them. They should all be like John Deere! Strategic placement of mothballs can definitely help.
How does the saying go, a stitch in time saves nine
That handle is really well-designed. Anything that has multiple functions that can be easily operated with one hand is a winner. Sounds like the case needs to be upgraded to magnetic holders for the bits and spring-loaded latch so the entire system works as well as the handle. 🔧👍
Agreed, many years later and that is the only flaw with this kit
I can’t really add anything that hasn’t already been said, so I won’t leave a comment. …….. Oh, whoops!😉
😂😂
Loved the video. Thank you so much
Thank you! 👍🏻
What an uplifting video! Must be gratifying to resurrect something that was not trashed to start with! Other than the missing bolt, did anything else need repair? Thanks for the video!
That was it as far as repairs! He's going to mow with it for the rest of the season and see if any other problems present themselves 👍🏻
I would sand and primer the underside really good because this mower has lots of life left in it 😊😊😊, new belts and blades and it’s better than new
The guy I'm fixing it for has plans to paint and fix up this mower the rest of the way 👍🏻
I like to do a leak down test just to see how good the rings are and how much carbon buildup 😊
Agreed that's a good idea but I've learned sometimes it's best not to go looking for problems 😂
I’ve tested it and vacuum does not remove the sludge, so I vacuum and then remove plug to finish draining the slug and flush
Yea the sludge can be difficult
I love me a good tool! 😉 That one is beautiful. I like any tool that is calibrated. Wait’ll you see the vicegrips I told you about - they have a calibration for jaw opening size!
These have been a great addition to the box 👍🏻
Another score! Was that mallet in the bucket too? Looks like it would work well, as it has a handle designed for a lot of control.
Yes! It's a really nice one 👍🏻
Great video! At timestamp 1:34 I almost spit out what I was drinking when I saw a hamster-sized mouse under the spindle as you were blowing off the deck! Holy cow! I rewound it and it turned out it was just a big leaf with dark spots that look like eyes. I think I need some time off...
😂😂😂😂😂 I just looked back I can see what you mean!
Wow- What a gift of a job that was! Sounds great and looks great too! 😃👍
Thanks Scout! 👍🏻
“Awesome!” You said it, bro! I’m surprised that came out as well as it did. There was a diamond hiding in there and you polished it up better than new. 🔧👍
She cleaned up pretty good!
That puller, dude!!! Holy moley, you lucked out bigtime! If that disk was on the right way it would have been at least $20! That’s a beauty. So adaptable - really well designed. That’s probably the kind of tool that earned Snap-On their reputation. I’ve never seen one exactly like that before.
That's still one of my favorite pullers 👍🏻
Garage? Did somebody say GARAGE?!!! Can’t fool me - he’s only calling it that. Welcome to the new shop! 😂
Shhhh... it's a secret! Don't let my wife hear ya now!!! 😂😂
@@hester781 Oh, oops! My bad!
JD must be livin’ right! No carb clean? No rotted deck? No wiring chewed? No seat destroyed? Shall wonders never cease?😂 Let this be a lesson - good karma will finally even out, folks! 👍 PS-Non-ethanol helps. 😁
I dodged sooo many potential bullets on this one 😅
Corn gas leaves heavy buildup of carbon in cylinder and head 😢😢😮
AYP mowers were the last of the good box store mowers. Crazy how well everything was free moving. Gonna be a great mowers for some years to come. Thank you for sharing the great content 😎😎🇺🇸🇺🇸
Couldn't agree more brother! 👍🏻 wish they were still pumping them out like these!
Looking at the mower I figured it would be at least an hour and a half video. Good job Hester. 👍👍
This one surprised the heck outta me! But don't worry, I'll pay on the next one 😂
LoL, it never fails. 🤣👍🏼
I actually thought it was gabbage at first. Ha
Credit for cleaning it first/before you start to work on it. LOL I was beginning to think I was the only one that doesn't like to work on dirty equipment.
Lol, yeah it just makes things easier when you're not digging through inches of dirt in a small shop 😂😂 can't always have it this way but it's nice when you can👍🏻
I didn't see any guide Wheels on the deck are they missing!
Great question, so it's not that they are missing more that he did not buy that upgrade. Lot of these decks have the holes to mount anti scalp wheel kits but not a lot of people paid for them
Nice job! I tend to just wire wheel most old tools to get them to a usable state and then spray them down with Boeshield T-9, which is essentially a chain wax, to prevent flash rust. I have a bench grinder that I keep one wire wheel and one sanding drum on. I have multiple other stones as well as two buffing wheels. Someday I’d like to have three grinders set up so I can use most of the wheels quickly without switching from one implement to another. Need more room!!! 😉🔧👍 I recently scored a free German vicegrips with some pretty cool features I’d never seen before. Cleaned it up from rusty to perfect and found a use for it almost immediately when no other tool I have would do the job! 👍👍👍
Too many tools not enough space lol story of our lives
This was a fun one. Nice.
Thank you! 👍🏻
First again 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Winner winner chicken dinner!😂
You’ve come a long way since this video. It was good to see a tour early on - answered some of the questions I’ve had about various things you have. Now I think about the upgrades you’ve done recently like the ramp and the outdoor lift/worktable - great improvements! The woodstove had to go! Takes up a lot of space for such a small shop. I’ve heated with wood off and on since I was a kid, so I know a fair bit about it.
It's definitely come a long way in the past six years, everything just kind of falls into place if you don't force it
Finally got it to fire! 👍 I think it’s kind of rare to have two issues, both connected with ignition, on the same machine. Time for some liquid electrical tape and shrink tubing. Good to see that type of carb with the really long emulsion tube - haven’t come across one of those yet. Your visual production skills have certainly improved light years over these old videos where much of the details were lost in the dark! 😉😂
The lighting definitely left a lot to be desired😂
Score!! I’ll bet by now you’ve used a few of those parts. 😉 I’ve had people dump boxes of parts on me that I thought I’d never use. Boy was I wrong! 😂 I suspect that guy had the one mower and grabbed the second one as a parts machine. They should definitely be in a museum. Kind of reminded me of three-legged dogs 🐕! My real question to that lady would have been - what happened to his tools?!!!⚒️ 🔧🔧🔧👍
In all seriousness I have used almost 40% of those parts. Between my own projects and other small engine mechanic friends of mine they have been put to good use
@@hester781
You can depend on me JD - I’ve ALWAYS got something to say! 😉 Yeah, change the oil, check the condition and height of the skid shoes and scraper blade, check the auger trans for adequate fluid, inspect inside the belly for clean friction wheel and plate with adequate rubber on the wheel. Lube all the moving parts inside there. Check the belts for condition. Lube all the moving control parts. THEN send it! 😉🔧👍
Would you believe I actually still have this little snowblower and I use it every season for my backyard to make a path for my dachshund 😂😂
So far, so good! Love those little Mazdas! Those years remind me a little of the Lotus Elan from back in the late ‘60’s. I’ve never driven one but from what I’ve heard they must be a blast.
Believe it or not that's my grandmother's, she bought it brand new in 2002 and she just turned 92 last month and she's still driving it 👍🏻
@@hester781 Wow! Good for her! What a hot patootie! Little old lady from Pasadena! 👍
The one thing I question here is installing a bearing using force on the center ring instead of the outside. The outside is where I’ve seen every other bearing installation being pushed upon, specifically emphasizing that area so as to not damage the bearing.
If you're referring to 12:37, the inner race is the proper surface to push on because that is what's being pressed onto the inner shaft. Whenever you're installing any type of bearing you always push on the surface that will not put the internals of the bearing under side load. In other words Push on the outside race if you're installing it inside a hole, and push on the center race installing onto a shaft 👍🏻
@@hester781 Oh, okay! Makes perfect sense. Thanks so much for explaining that. Soaking up the knowledge. 🙏
Great one, JD! In reading the comments it looks like you really helped and/or inspired a lot of people to fix theirs! Since so many people have abandoned air tools for cordless, it seems like there’s a lot of these tools available for not a lot of money - right within my budget. Now that I’ve seen how they work I’m more inclined than ever to see if I can’t afford some of these since I have multiple free compressors and no impact gun or cordless ratchet. I also want to get a needle scaler. Thanks, buddy! 🔧👍
As much as I use my battery powered tools almost daily, they will never replace my love for pneumatic tools. I have quite an extensive collection I've picked up over the years!
Is that snow on the ground ???😢
I actually shot the beginning of this video last March/April lol no snow yet!
6 years late to the party, but first to comment! 😉 Taking on additional machines is definitely an addiction. I’ve probably got 15 times that amount in my yard and garage and on the front planters. Next I need to clear out the third bedroom, put down scrap plywood and bring up some of the handheld pieces to store out of the weather. Yup, a serious addiction!😂
I'm gonna be in the small engine wing at Betty Ford "I can't stop, I wanna stop but I can't stop!" 😂😂😂
@@hester781 Peein’ my pants dude! 😂😂😂
Well done Hester!!
Thanks Ray! 👍🏻
Bought a same engine for 20 euros taken apart because water somehow got in to a cylinder and it got pitted. Everything has small wear but the cylinder. Gonna hone the cylinder, lap the valves and see how it will come together, wish me luck 😅
That's a score in my book! I'm sure you'll get it going! 👍🏻
Rodriguez Donald Moore Donald Jones Larry
👍🏻
I have torqued very few bolts on lawn mowers in 40 years. Never had a comeback or a problem. Just use lock tite and small hand tools. I do have torque wrenches too.
Could not agree more 👍🏻
Kohler coils only go on one way upside down. Usually I know it’s weird, but I worked on over a dozen of them seems to be the same common thing they they work only One Direction and upside down
I agree that's usually the case. However on this particular one and other 26 hp kohlers I looked at while researching, one side was upside down and the other was right side up. I also pulled the engine cover off an identical 26 hp kohler motor I have and it was the same as this one
no fuel shut off?
I didn't bother adding one on this machine, never a bad idea to add one however the last batch I bought almost all of them leaked so I figured why chance fate lol
You rock! Great video.
Thank you! 👍🏻
U should have done both seats u were right there half ass n all that work i know u told me how great u were ill fix my own dont expect my call not everything on utube is ledit
You sound a little upset, is everything all right at home?
It was amazing how much gunk was in the fuel. I do enjoy watching you repair the small engines. Excellent show! 👍
Thank you!👍🏻
Great video!!
Thank you! 👍🏻
Acts like it’s a tad out of time?
Unless there was something going on internally the flywheel key was in perfect shape
