Beyond The Nest
Приєднався 6 тра 2022
So here it is ANOTHER UA-cam channel - but this one is all about what my hubby and I get up to “Beyond the Nest” as we begin our new adventures as Empty Nesters. We are beginning with a move to the other side of the world... Singapore! I have learned so much from all those that have ventured across the world and shared on UA-cam that I thought this might be a great way to keep that going by sharing our experiences. I have found several channels that include young expats and whole expat families, but not many that are Empty Nest Expats. We hope you will join us.... To Singapore and Beyond!
Expat Empty Nesters | Singapore's Amazing Flora and it's Focus on Keeping It Green!
#singaporevlog #emptynester #expatlife
Howdy Howdy! We are Simon and Rebecca and you have found Beyond the Nest, a channel that shares the adventures of two Empty Nesters, starting with a move to the other side of the world.. Singapore!
I love green! And Singapore has too much - but in a Country/City this size and where land is a premium I was surprised how much is covered in green, and it really makes a difference.
If you want to keep up with us please considering subscribing.
If this is your first time meeting us - please take a moment and watch our Channel Announcement video linked here:

What mind blogging observations of singapore in nature. Kudos!
What amazing parks and plants, you will be in your element. Your enjoyment of them comes across really well. Could see you sitting on one of those chairs in the garden on the 17th floor reading. That is some rain - you have a pot plant on your balcony table - knew you couldn't not have a plant to look after.
The drive to green the city is a deliberate decision as the concrete jungle in Singapore is inevitable being such a small island without resources other than its people.Thank you for your insights.
Enjoy your interesting video. Very analytical
What a lovely place. I am sure you both relaxed and enjoyed it so much. Adored the turn down animals - they were so beautiful. Have you tried to recreate at home? Think the bats would have freaked me though.
Really enjoyed joining you on your adventure! So beautiful and so clean. Glad you guys had a great time 🖤
We are thinking of being expats. Chile.. China I'm honestly so nervous about. It has nothing to do with being Chinese, either, it has everything to do with being scared of the instability. I can't begin to thank you for this channel! THANK you! I cannot wait to see these vidoes.
welcome to sunny island Singapore ! so glad you finally landed and hope you will settle in soon and find a warm community of expat friends...greetings from canada.
Loved seeing your first two places, they looked amazing. Really nice to see Si and meet him.
Greetings n best wishes.Your husband is capable and he appreciate the finest thing in life. His presentation make your video entertaining.Feel like you both are having the hotel stay all by yourself. It’s minimum occupancy.Wellcome to Singapore, the country of surprises. Thanks for sharing.
Looks like paradise!
Just found this channel from your other channel (from your visit to my channel!) I'm excited to follow your journey! We're empty nesters as well and looking forward to our own adventures although no plans to move overseas! I can follow along and adventure through you!
Now that you are here.... Meet the locals... Try the food... Start learning Singlish... because I sort of did challenge you to order coffee at the Coffeeeshops in Singlish 😂🤣
You are so mischievous trying to scare them off. In fact, one can survive well in SG without Singlish at all. One can gradually pick it up as time goes by. A gentle reminder for Simon and Rebecca would be to try to speak at a slower pace while ordering with elderly stallholders in hawker centres and foodcourts, as not all of them are well-versed in English, cheers.
Hi, welcome to Singapore! I'm a Singaporean who has lived in the US for more years than i have lived in Singapore. I will be back in Singapore in December. If you'd like to meet up and makan (eat) or jalan jalan (walk) ,...let me know.
What a great idea to rest as soon as you arrived. It helped you both relax and recover. Looking forward to seeing what's next.
We sure needed that rest, especially with all the mental and physical work to come!
@@beyondthenest Can understand that.
So excited to see u've reached Singapore, hope u'll enjoy ur stay here and can't wait to see more of ur videos here in our red dot ❤
Thank you for the lovely comment and welcome. We are looking forward to so much - but settling in and getting to know our own little spot on this red dot will be priority one!
Welcome!! Finally... to our rainy shores. Yes its a rainy season now. So slippers n umbrellas are a Must. Lol
Without the rain there would be no green and I have to say the amount of green that is in and around Singapore really is so unique and adds to Singapore's charm and livability. Yes time to have my umbrella (though I will be carrying it for those ultra sunny days too) and I need to buy some shoes that don't mind getting wet. Thank you for the lovely welcome!
Fully understandable. It's so cool that you two are so well together and are enough as a basis. I notice that in my late 40s I'm so more reluctant to change places and move.
We love the idea of changing places - but then reality hits you like a truck in what all it means and requires... We just have not found that place we want to "settle down" in.. Your reluctance to change could also be an indication of contentment and comfort - two things that are very valuable and wise as we get a little older.
Can empathize with you, being from the ‘West to East’ for the first time. Welcome to SG and rest assured that SG is a very livable city. You guys should be able to adapt real fast in no time. As understand, most Westerners’ initial area of activities surround the civic district (MBS, Suntec, Boat Quay, Clarke Quay, Robertson Quay, Haji Lane and Arab Street), Orchard Road and Holland Village etc. If you are interested to explore the history of Singapore, it would be nice to visit the various museums such as the National Museum and the Asian Civilizations Museum. Lastly, it’s advisable to bring along an umbrella when out during the current rainy season even though most places are sheltered.
And bring water wherever u go, dehydration is a risk u dun want to take.
Thank you for the great welcome and I have to say you hit all the places that were areas we visited on our "Look See" trip! I am hoping to get the Museum's once we get settled, learning the history is something I look forward to very much. I have to figure out the shoe situation too regarding the rainy days - I don't want to have soggy shoes! Thanks again for such a nice, welcoming and useful comment.
So true - ending a day with dehydration is not something I want to experience.. just need to get in the habit of carrying one with me! Thanks for the advice!
Can totally understand your feelings. I would be feeling the exact same things. You both are brave and I know you both will do really well. I think big decisions are our age are harder and need more thinking about and consideration. Know that I am here for you both.
Hi, I recently moved from the US as well. Loved your perspective on relocating to Singapore. Would like to see more videos and perhaps meet sometime to share our views :)
Thank you for the comment, and glad to hear we are no the only ones making the move - Hoping to do more of the videos - but finding time to edit and publish has been a challenge - but things are "moving" along, looking forward to being settled again.
Hello, I'm Aida from Singapore, welcome ! Life as an Expat here can be very different from local life, and hopefully you get to experience both in equal measure. Good luck on your move, Singapore is an easy country to settle in, safe and with glorious food at every conner. Getting used to the heat and humidity takes a bit, highly recommend those wet Minty tissues on your days out for cooling down and getting rid of the icky-sticky feeling !!
I will be searching out the Minty tissues - We have had a little experience with the humidity as we lived in Houston Texas for many years and my hometown is along the coast there in Texas. Thanks for the kind and supportive words!
Welcome to Singapore Here is a link for basic singlish ua-cam.com/video/O9gModChGyM/v-deo.html
hello there i am an expat here, been living in Singapore for a couple years now! I would consider myself very much Singaporean as the culture here has grown on me so much. About the Singlish, its just english with local slang like a few words here and there. Not to worry tho Singaporeans can speak fluent english (it is their first language in school after all) they just tend to gravitate to Singlish during chats with close friends simply because it shortens a-lot of pre existing english sentences! For example after dinner instead of saying, “alright since we are done eating, let’s leave” Singaporeans might say, “Chao ah.” Another example would be expressing frustration/ irritation. Instead of saying, “oh dear this is so annoying or i am getting irritated.” Singaporeans might say,” Wah Lao Eh!” Shortens the speech and puts some emotion into it as well! Don’t try and learn it like a new language through watching videos or books etc. Just learn it naturally, sure it might take time but let it’ll naturally grow on you with time upon hearing more and more people use Singlish around you! Other than that have a great time in Singapore and don’t hesitate to ask questions when you are in doubt.
Thanks for taking. a moment of your time and being so encouraging - looking forward to learning more about all the Singaporean cultures.
Singapore houses are small. So u just bring your small item. Large sofa n long dinning tables will not be even able to get into the lift let alone the tiny house.
Great suggestion - we gave our Sofa and a chair to a friend - we made the mistake when we moved to England.. we brought a large "American" sized sofa with us - ended up in our back garden and eventually we had to get rid of it..
Dun worry about the singlish... you dun have to speak singlish to get around or get things done.. regular english is fine...
That is a true testament to the flexibility of Singapore - not all countries would be so welcoming of so many different languages and cultures...
Great review👍
Thanks! 👍
Welcome to Sg. It’s a small island with great public transport system buses / trains / taxis (including Grab). The things u need to get upon arrival are: (1) prepaid SIM card with data for your smart phone (2) Easylink card to use the public transport system (buses & MRT only) (3) For setting up home u can go to Daiso shop for very affordable cutlery & kitchen stuff or IKEA mega malls (3) For groceries / supermarkets go to NTUC FairPrice or Sheng Siong or Cold Storage. Cold Storage tend to be more expensive. (4) For good value affordable Sg local food , go to our hawker centres (not the touristy ones like Newton). (5) we have plenty of parks to enjoy your walks.
What a fabulous list - thank you so much for providing this for not only Si and Me but also anyone reading the comments that might be doing something like this in the future!
No Uber here, they closed down I think.
Actually we never used it in the States so - we will just have to use what is available in Singapore - the MRT and Buses are pretty amazing.
Shoulders took over half of Singpaore 😳
I have been told many times over the years I have broad shoulders.... hee here
@@beyondthenest I like broad shoulders. Like those lady swimmers
I noted you used Fahrenheit for the temperature, you would soon be seeing and using SI units in Singapore.
I am not sure - how I will handle this in the videos - originally I thought only people that lived in the US would be interested in my videos ( largely just family and friends) and of course they are more familiar with Fahrenheit - but it has been amazing that people from Singapore have found my videos and are leaving comments.
Thanks for sharing, don’t worry too much, if you can’t speak Singlish. you still can move around the island. Cheers 🥂
Thank you for the kind words of encouragement - This is all so exciting!
My goodness! I wish you well. Take good care of yourself PLEASE. Newbie here. Stay well.
Thank you so much for the kind words and support - it is all coming together!
Good Luck on your move! Real estate here is flying off the shelf at the moment.
Fingers crossed! I just hope we can move quick enough...
Hi.. take it slow and you'll pick it up slower. It kind seeps into you the longer you stay here. I'm a native and Singlish is the fastest way to communicate between people here ;) Most people who think you need to speak proper grammatical english tends to be the ones with a ribbed stick up their butt.
Great review👍
Glad you liked it
Here’s for you to check out our Singapore’s local food and hawker centres.........enjoy! ua-cam.com/video/ZIrtJC0wZCY/v-deo.html
Singlish as a means of communication is nothing to be proud of. I wouldn't promote pidgin English if I was a Singaporean. If any Singaporean aspires to live in a foreign country in the future, they better learn proper, grammatical English while there's still time.
Eduardo saverin lived here so it's okay....
Great video, with good advice. How you could keep smiling I don't know, I would have been going up the wall.
I don’t know how you are doing all this, but I give you lots of credit for doing all of it with a smile. I would never have the courage to move across the world. Really enjoying you journey
Anticipation, anticipation, anticipation ! 😌
Facebook co-founder lived in Singapore.
I had to go look the name up - I bet he has never had to worry about finding a place he could afford in Singapore.. hee hee
singlish is basically broken english .. u don't have to change the way u speak. just give it time and you'll get use to it.
Haha that is how most English would feel is how we talk in America - broken English.
Hiyee there!! Welcome to Singapore!! Right so about Singlish, u need not speak it our way if u want but its fun to know n try it out for yourself. Like someone here already said, a 2-episode local documentary about the origins of Singlish, was just released during our recent National (aka Independence) Day celebration on 9th Aug. Here is the link for part one below. U can also check out other great documentaries from that same local news channel, just for some "native" knowledge. Enjoy!! ua-cam.com/video/gamPZMj2po4/v-deo.html
Thank you for the link and help, I will definitely be looking around the other programs. Thanks for taking the time to leave the information for me.
@@beyondthenest U r Welcome!!
No one in SG.... Feel the need for you to 'know' Singlish and not speaking it isn't any form of disrespect... unless you 'demand' us to speak 'properly' for your sake. Its a spoken language that if you mix with the locals enough... eventually you'll pick it up... My wife is from the Philippines... and took her a year or so to pick up the usual slangs... and now after nearly 10yrs here... She can swear like those of us born here 🤣😂 And a update for you just in case you didn't follow the news around here... Mask wear is now optional both indoors and outdoors from 29th Aug... the exception being in Hospitals, Clinics... basically all medical places.... and while inside Public Transportation (MRTs and Buses)... Its also optional for taxis and hired cars... But if the driver insist, please respect them and put it on...
My goal: to "swear like those of us born here" ! Haha! Love it! the mask thing is great, so many visual clues have been hidden - I hope it will help me catch on quicker. Considering I am an American most Brits would say I am not speaking"properly" either. I think dialects are so important to identity, I would never expect anyone changing for me, it is my job as the guest here to learn and adapt. Thank you for the lovely message!
@@beyondthenest LOL... Ok... Just for funny... On the day you can go to any local coffeeshop... and in Singlish, order "strong coffee, no suger, less condensed milk, takeaway/takeout"... then, you'll finally be a 'Master'... And if you want to know if you have been localised... You'll have to be able to drink that hot coffee out of a plastic bag... through a straw... the way we locals do it... 🤣
Hello, stumbled on this. I like to recommend a channel The Daily Ketchap Podcast, which I have been watching for a while now, you might like to check it out, disscussion in Singaporean accent and at the same time keeping abreast of topics relating to Singapore in a fun way. Shalom
That sounds exactly what I need - I will definitely check them out. Thank yo for taking a moment and leaving a comment.! Your stumble is my to my benefit!
