Im 70 years old. Still mountain bike on an analog bike but a lot slower than the youngins. Got a electric mountain bike, a Trek eCaliber 9.6, and now I ride with some folk about my age. I still feel I get a good work out but I ride more as I live in the Blue Ridge Mountains NC, USA and those really steep parts are more fun to ride now.

This is exactly what I have experienced on an E -MTB as well. When I’m riding on tough, fast trails, my heart rate is in the stratosphere. It makes me push that much harder. On my acoustic, I get worn out and discouraged, but on the e-MTB, I can stay jacked for a solid hour and then some.

People that can’t afford or just don’t want to spend the extra money for an E Bike are usually the complainers. E - Bikes are here to stay that’s for sure and the numbers of riders on them will increase.

Ebikes pedal assist yea totally cool EVERYWHERE. Throttle electric motos are the ones I want to keep off the trails. They belong on a track or specific off road areas. I could get into how the riders are unsafe or don't use bell's but that really just stereo type and I hope the use and safety overall improves. However if throttle bikes are alloowed on mtb trails they will roost up berms and many other features (ie look at dirt bike tracks, they're loamy). If they loaming condition worsens on an mtb trail, all the analog riders have to suffer thru that to continue to pedal are walk up the area if too bad. So thats my main gripe, and nothing to do with regular pedal assist bikes

As long as full power e-bikes aren’t terrorizing the other users because of their speed, and adding an element of danger to the other trail users, we would all probably play in the same sandbox a lot better! My request is just to slow down on crowded trails. Self enforce a speed limit that is reasonable for the conditions, ie, a crowded trail. I’ve heard people complain that their kid almost got run over by an e-bike flying too fast for the conditions on a trail. That doesn’t help any mountain biker, but especially an emtb’er.

On the point of should / shouldn't ebikes share trails... When I walking on trails some ebikes blow past me at speeds close to regular traffic speeds, rendering the trail as safe as walking on a street... A hand full of eriders without trail etiquette instigate the banning of things.

e-bikes got us out the door and riding every week. Now my son bought a hard tail mountain bike (analog) and he loves mountain biking. Probably wouldn't have happened had he not been out riding every day with his cheap electric bike and wanted a bike he could actually do jumps and go on trails with.

  • @johntomasik1555

I hear ya. When I increase the assist, I just ride much faster (which makes it fun on climbs), and I actually increase my heart rate. At 62, I got burned out riding since the 90's. Got a Moterra this past August, and it has nearly 800 trail miles on it now. My acoustic hangs unused in the garage. Mostly I ride at the lowest assist, but if I find myself not wanting to ride, I just take a spin with more assist, and the fun factor comes right back, so I want to ride again.

Few things what nobody tells you about E-bikes : 1. Drivetrain - wears out much much faster than on normal trail mountain bike ( every 300-500miles chain should be replaced, if you forget maintin your drivetrain- you ended up with replacing all set ) That is why drive belts and hide gear drivetrain system is the future of e bikes. Just have a look how thin chain is installed on ebikes 1-12 motor 80Nm, 2. Service - cost more and should be proceed mre often than on normal bike 3. Battery - drop capacity when cold/winter weather. 4. Transportation - you will be not allowed to transport your ebike via flight. Anything else ?

Just saw your video, I don't understand it either on why they have to ban Ebikes on some places. It's not like we are riding big MotoCross tires or a Surron bikes that can destroy trails. Ebikes maintain the normal MTB components but with a pedal assist motor that is max at 25km/h with the same MTB tires. Ebikes does not destroy trails like some people think of. My reasoning is that, people who have big Egos and jealousy of the people who rides ebike. And to be honest Ebike can even help you in doing trail maintenance especially uphill trail and long distance trail when you don't tire yourself doing uphill or long rides and you can bring more tools up.

I started riding an ebike after heart rate issues were keeping me from riding. The Levo SL was perfect to give me just enough assistance when needed to keep my rate lower. After docs fixed me up, it was just too much fun to give up the ebike. I have had other bikes since but that SL sees more ride time than anything else.

Bikes e or analog don't wear out trails, it's mostly water erosion. Ebike haters will ban ebiks right up until a large group of hikers, some echo nutjobs, or real estate developer is able to convince the government no bikers should be allowed on the trails and they don't have enough riders to fight it.

not a mountain bike anymore. And it's called people being lazy. It's a mechanical device to assist you in pedaling. that's why no one wants to mountain bike anymore, who the hell wants to go spend 15k on a damn mountain bike. Come back to reality, I have a norco Atomik vps. i pedal everywhere. and i'm 42. keeps me in shape. Also i'd like to mention that e-bikes are killing the industry. Again you can buy a car for 15k, so who's going to want a bike @ that price point. 5k should be the cap point for a mtb period. And my fiancee is driving my second full suspension green and black Giant stance. it's getting her in better shape and she's happier. if she had an e-bike then she's just be lazy because she'd have motor assistance and she wouldn't burn the calories that she normally would just pedaling normally. also the vps cost me 1400$. and the Giant stance cost me 700$+375$ for new drive train and gear set. plus bottom bracket & a set of 27.5x2x2.3 continental Xkings. All that said i paid less for all that then it would cost for an e-bike. so yeah it's all just a gimmick. not worth it.

Nobody normal ever cares about who ride what, I would personally never go for an ebike, not only because the assist I'd get, which I don't want, but more so because of the risks associated with batteries, that's it. Get a cheap ebike, might explode at your house, get an expensive one..., if you have money then sure. Also hate how heavy they are in comparison. The ebike makes sense for some, makes no sense to some too so just get what you enjoy the most

I honestly don't get the ebike are harder on trails argument at all. A standard bike is anywhere from 25-35 pounds. A high quality ebike is anywhere between 40-55 pounds. That's a difference of roughly 15-20 pounds. You mean to tell me there's not larger variations in rider weight on those trails? One guy could be 160 pounds and the next guy could be 250+. Are we going to tell the larger guy, sorry bud, you can't ride this trail cause there's a weight restriction? lol. "But you ride faster on an ebike and that damages the trails". Again, lots of guys with higher skill levels can ride at different speeds. I've yet to see a sign up that says "if your skill level is very high, please don't ride this trail as your ability to ride high speed will damage the trail" lol. So dumb.

Then I also bought my dream-on bike (all XTR Cannodale scalpel 11.5kg total) and ... I am still switching between and having both long distances when I need to, and some workout when I want to! Win-win.

I think that the reason why people are against e-bikes on the trails is the very same thing why some hikers are against bikes on the trails. They want to keep that trail all on theirselves. Is bikes or e-bikes are allowed there will be more people on the trails and that seems to be a problem for those people who think that they practically own the trails, because they were there first. Here in Lapland Finland hikers were against giving bikers allowance to ride in Pallas-Ylläs National park. I even heard many of them saying that it's cheating if you can get that easily into the middle of the park. You should walk there and then you are allowed to get that price of a spectacular views.
