Otter Creek & Rio Grande
United States
Приєднався 4 лют 2018
Welcome to the Otter Creek & Rio Grande. This channel documents the build of my "Freelanced" Otter Creek. The OC&RG is a "What if" railroad that did not exist in reality but could have under different circumstances.
The OC&RG is loosely based on the Colorado Midland Railway, specifically the 60 mile run between Leadville Colorado and Basalt Colorado which includes the branch line to Aspen Colorado. In Otter Creek world, the CM did not get off the ground and different investors got involved. The OC&RG was born as a Narrow Gauge railroad following the same route intended for the CM.
I haven't decided on a specific time frame or season yet, but I'm leaning heavily toward late spring during the late 1930's. I'm using 1/4" spline for the sub-roadbed between locations. Benchwork is mostly L-girder design with risers and other standard techniques. No scenery yet, but I'm hoping to get started in 2026 or sooner. *crosses fingers*

The Dual Gauge Turnout
Some might find this one interesting. It was not uncommon to run a third rail in between the standard gauge rails so that narrow gauge traffic and standard gauge traffic could share the same route (Dual Gauge). The dual turnouts are a bit more complicated than a normal turnout but not nearly as bad as the three-way!

So far that is looking good. I can tell you that I've had a couple of points pop off the throw-bar as well and mine aren't narrow gauge. - Jason
Thanks Jason.
Very Nice Dennis.🤗❤ She's a Beauty! . . . . 🚂Lawrence
Thanks Lawrence!!
Everything you’ve made, works, Dennis. 😁👍🏼
Not true!! Lol. Thanks Drew!
Are you sure you want to eliminate part of the turnout? It's going to limit operations or expansion in the future. It's your call, but I would reconsider this.
Of course I’m sure, there is no way to expand where the narrow gauge is going. It’s already built and scenicked. have no plans on changing anything on the time saver. It would look silly to bring the dual gauge to an already laid and ballasted narrow gauge track. Thanks for stopping by.
Thanks for the info Dennis Great idea on the turnout play list Should be helpful for a lot of modelers Keep up the great work
Thanks Charles, I figure some might find it useful.
You broke your wand again ?🙃
No, lol. I just grabbed the first pointy thing I could find.
Looking good Dennis.
Thanks Sierge!
Interesting 🤔
It's definitely a niche within the hobby. Thanks for stopping by Jesse.
Indeed, it is very interesting that you run a dual gauge on your model. The finished turnout looks amazing.
Thank you sir!
Great build of a great kit. Thank You Love Campbell kits. Unfortunately not too many builds on UA-cam for novices to learn from . Hope you do more!!!
I've got dozens of kits that need to be build... might take me another 20 years to get to them all! I do plan on documenting most of them. Thanks Steve!
Love it man! The music was spot on too. It's so hard to do a op session video short. Mine will be 30mins lol can't wait for more. Watched the whole thing!
Yeah, op sessions tend to be dry and take for ever if you document every move. The music helps, I try and edit out some of the more mundane things. Thanks for stopping by!
Dennis, is the peninsula you originally planned as roaring fork built already? Great job on this section of benchwork.
Yes.. Roaring Fork was one of the names I used for Basalt Co for a while. It's now Frying Pan. Easier to say!
Hi Dennis, I’m sure that you built your benchwork square and the wall is forcing the problems at the front, so I think the easiest and most practical way to fix it is to shim the back where it meets the wall. The other issue could be resolved by joining the two types of track before it goes under the top. I’m sure that you will figure it out. The only suggestion you ever took of mine was the numbering of the towns to number the trains, so we know it will be thought through by you and you will come up with the perfect solution. I’m really enjoying your build and look forward to what you decide.
Thanks Derek! Finding solutions on my own is one of my favorite part of the hobby. I've already built one of two dual gauge turnouts that will fix the routing of the standard gauge (I hope). I'll address the fascia when I'm ready. Shims seem the easiest solution.
Hey Dennis things are looking good. It would be nice if you did something to run your standard HO otherwise what would you do with them ?
Exactly! Yeah, I’m working up a way to incorporate a couple of staging Tracks.
if the dual gauge start to go downhill just after the timesaver could it duck under the narrow gauge before getting to the far side of hell gate? guess it would be close but you at least don't need room for double stack containers. have the narrow gauge on a embankment and the dual gauge in front with the terrain sloping down could look nice
That would be about a 4.5" drop of elevation in less than 8'. I don't think a 4.5% grade is a good idea. The whole staged train would mostly be on a grade, making uncoupling an adventure. Thanks Stephan, I'll work out what I'm going to do when I'm ready.
@@OtterCreek yeah, 4.5% is to steep
Dual gauge turnouts loading….
@@OtterCreek just had another idea can the staging for the dual / standard gauge fit on the other side of the timesaver ? then you could model the dualgauge track towards hell gate as under construction would give a nice scene with some ties stacked up, some rail pieces ready and maybe construction of the tunnel started but only a few feet into the hill
Hi Dennis. Wow, I had to watch this video several times to fully digest your problem with the Timesaver and Hell Gate I agree with extending the dual gauge track because what you already have laid on the Timesaver does not look abandoned but in daily use. What really concerns me is the area between the Timesaver and Hell Gate. It is a little hard to see just how long that area is in the video but it appears to be somewhat short. I am concerned about how are you going to be able to do the scenery transition between them. Other wise another great video.😄
There are so many options to consider. Scenery doesn't concern me at all. An option I didn't discuss is merging the two. I could connect both the narrow and standard with a turnout. (original track plan did this). Then peel the standard gauge off toward the wall with another turnout that's hidden. As I mentioned in the video, nothing I do there to keep the standard gauge as a usable option will be easy. Thanks Sierge
@@OtterCreek Dennis I believe what ever you come up with it will work.
Hey Dennis, would it work to merge the low-line and the dual gauge before entering a single tunnel, and then split them again under the mountain? ..and change the narrative to suit?🤔 That way you could still have the dual gauge staging track(s) and a runaround track coming back from the same turntable, all under cover of the scenery - no one would ever know🤗 ('cause we wouldn't tell 'em!). . . . . . 🚂Lawrence?
That is what my original track plan did. At one time I had a wye in this corner with dual gauge throughout and the standard gauge could turn on the wye. The size of the Silver gulch loops kinda ruined that idea. So yes, I have considered that and it is on the top of my list of things to think about as I deal with the various elements of this corner of the Layout. Every decision will effect other decision... so which do I make first??? LOL I love the problem solving aspect of the Hobby! Thanks Lawrence!
@@OtterCreek Yes, gotta love it! We await your decision with 'bated breath (poetically speaking).
@@locolorenzo Dual gauge turnouts loading….
@@OtterCreek 😃👍❤🤗 Go Dennis!!!
You have every woodworking tool known to mankind. Why couldn’t you plane the board down flush at the offending end?
Don't think there would be much of a board left after that. I'd be more inclined to shim out the stringer on the wall or at the fascia. No worries, I'll work something out. Thanks TC.
Amazing layout, love the olden days appeal, thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching! Great to see a fellow Oklahoman visit the channel!
For the section of 3 rail your wanting to hide Instead of making a tumble why not build a fake tunnel portal out of some model wood or popsicle sticks and paint/weather them to make them look old and similar to an old mine entrance. Then to kinda of hide it add overgrown trees/brush and detail the tracks closer to the tunnel overgrown and in disuse
I could do that. I will first see how easily I can continue the track as a staging yard which would be my preference if feasible. There are a few options I'm looking at with the three rail.
Wow Dennis gezz your just kicking butt on your Masterpiece, Oh that overhang Id just cut furring strips to make the facial come out right hope to see you Saturday my friend awesome work as usual❤
@@bernardc2553 Thanks Bernard, yeah I’m not worried about the fascia at this point I’ll get it figured out one way or another.
@OtterCreek Oh I sure you will buddy lol
Looking good, Dennis. Remember, layouts don't give us problems, only challenges and opportunities. Or something like that. 😀😀
@@thecnwmondovilinepaulscota7304 True words Paul.
Dear Dennis, on the bowing wall behind the time saver section; maybe it seems a bit more work, but why not change out those lateral stringers with ones which alleviate for the bow in the wall and make the front of your fascia completely straight. Think you’re right on track with the hell gate base lowered at about 2”. Just from the viewing angle in the vid such a lower approach will indeed help tie the sections together in a more smooth way. Love the temporary spline configuration, those curves definitely look great, can only imagine what they will look like when fully sceniced. Surely, such an alignment will create a great deal of visual interest. Looking forward to seeing your progress in next episodes. Cheerio
Thanks Vincent! I'll figure out something for the fascia when the time comes to make the decision.
Dennis, couldn't you shim the benchwork under the timesaver from the wall with some 1X4 blocks, to give you space to make facia even? Great update video. Looking Great. Keeping a functional dual gauge track would be ideal. 3 rail looks so cool.
I'm sure there will be more than one way to deal with it. I'll figure something out, I'd like it to appear seamless, but still be removable. Thanks Gerald!

Hey, Dennis, I thoroughly enjoyed the Ops Session. Looks like a lot of fun, and I think it's a good thing to be able to operate while still building the layout. And I love that RGS 41. Is that brass?
Thanks Paul! It's great to stop work and play, it rekindles my motivation to move forward. The number 41 is a Blackstone. I think it's a combination of die-cast metal and plastic.
I enjoy watching your videos. There is something that I noticed in a previous video and also in this one. I do not know if anyone has mentioned this previously. The west bound train coming from the east is entering Frying Pan from the back side of the wye. If so, then North should be to its right (left when viewed from the front of the bench work) and South should be to the left (right when viewed from the front of the bench work).
I've discussed this before but you are the first to mention it in the comments. Great attention to detail! The town of Frying Pan is modeled after Basalt Co. My version is a mirror image. This was out of necessity due to a variety of things too numerous to mention. So yes, the route as we see it in Otter Creek world would technically be going "North." As model railroaders, we do the best we can to accurately represent the prototype, but it's impossible. The prototype route went South to Aspen Co. So does mine. Similar to how highway's twist and turn, the ROUTE destination is south. In Otter Creek world, the train needs to leave town going north because there is a mountain in the way. It then loops around and heads south. Keeping cardinal directions on a model railroad is very difficult as track wraps around the room and engages with different levels. It's a hobby where we constantly make concessions. Direction of travel is one of many. I hope that helps, someday I may draw a route map that shows the track leaving north and looping around back to the south crossing over the east/west line. BTW, the route leaving east also has to loop around the same mountain to the north before it can head east. ;-)
That was fun to watch!!
It was even more fun to operate... I'm thinking October 26th.
Hey Dennis. It's your railroad, operate it as you see fit. I think this operating session went extremely well. Great job.
Yes sir! Thanks Sierge.
First time I have seen your show. What Brand are the Locomotives. I am wanting to model the Rio Grande, #478 specifically.
