Otter Creek & Rio Grande
United States
Приєднався 4 лют 2018
Welcome to the Otter Creek & Rio Grande. This channel documents the build of my "Freelanced" Otter Creek. The OC&RG is a "What if" railroad that did not exist in reality but could have under different circumstances.
The OC&RG is loosely based on the Colorado Midland Railway, specifically the 60 mile run between Leadville Colorado and Basalt Colorado which includes the branch line to Aspen Colorado. In Otter Creek world, the CM did not get off the ground and different investors got involved. The OC&RG was born as a Narrow Gauge railroad following the same route intended for the CM.
I haven't decided on a specific time frame or season yet, but I'm leaning heavily toward late spring during the late 1930's. I'm using 1/4" spline for the sub-roadbed between locations. Benchwork is mostly L-girder design with risers and other standard techniques. No scenery yet, but I'm hoping to get started in 2026 or sooner. *crosses fingers*

It's structure build season again! I've got a few rail served structures that I want to get mocked up before I start on another scratch build for the town of Silver Gulch. Don't worry, I don't plan on creating a video for every mock-up I do, but I thought I would include a couple to start with to kick off the building season. ;-). This has been a long time coming! I finally have track all the way through the Time Saver. I'm by no means finished with benchwork/ trackwork, but I'm a lot closer than I was a year ago. Adding the Time Saver (Malta) as a location in JMRI opens up five more spurs for operation. We take a slow freight from West Staging to East Staging. WARNING: The music is not the usual! LOL. The wife and I took a little trip up to Colorado and of course I took a few pictures and video. The adventure begins in Dodge City KS and ends somewhere close to Cripple Creek Colorado... I think. Somewhere between those two points we find a castle at Manitou Springs and a train near the Royal Gorge. A lot of the pictures were taken to use as inspiration for future scenery. The Dual Gauge Turnout

Some might find this one interesting. It was not uncommon to run a third rail in between the standard gauge rails so that narrow gauge traffic and standard gauge traffic could share the same route (Dual Gauge). First off Mr Smith your work is incredible. It goes perfectly with what Dennis is doing. This was just a fantastic break from the every day norm. Thank you both
You are welcome! It was enjoyable to run the trains and film!
Beautiful!🤗 And a nice contrast of the Al-ham-bra boxcar next to those high-cube livestock cars!❤ Thanks for bringing us along. . . .🚂
You are welcome! I don't think the livestock cars have made an appearance before. I've struggled with the trucks, couplers and weight! Of course I've struggled with weight my whole life :-)
@@OtterCreek Yup - it's a weighty problem for us all, lol. I saw those shiny weights in the stockcars. I just thought they were transporting silver ingots in those cars - the bandits would never think to look there!
@@locolorenzo good eye! Yes, eventually I'll see about adding some hay on the weights. Who knows, maybe even some cow patties are in order!
@@OtterCreek Cow Pies. Yes! Lovin' it! (the look, not the stink))
@@OtterCreeklet’s think of something cool
That's a beauty of a boxcar. I really like them. SMS livestock cars.
Thanks Jerry!
The idea of an imaginary delivery of rolling stock to your transfer track to be hauled to its industry spot adds a nice dimension to the operations. I've drooled over your model structures and scenes before but man, do you ever have a beautiful model railroad.. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! Eventually I will return the favor and send a car back to the APRR via the imaginary exchange. I have a few Rail Line kits I haven't built. I still need to get custom decals so I can dress one up in OC&RG livery!
Thats a nice looking kit , who makes it ? You sure have a lot of 1-2-3 blocks !
@@BoxcarJerry Wild West Models. 1-2-3’s are great to have around. Thanks Jerry!
@OtterCreek I agree they are good to have around.
Boiler building is on the wrong end of the hesd frame hoist house building. Great kit bashing idea, but...
But what?? It’s not built, nothing about what you’ve seen is close to a finished product LoL. Thanks for stopping in and being critical of something that is literally still an idea at the moment.
What a fantastic looking boxcar! When I heard unboxing I was expecting a two or three hour video. I know someone else who takes over an hour to open a box. LOL Thanks for sharing.
Thanks John! Yeah, I tried to slow play the unboxing, but my heart wasn't really in it. I wanted to get that car on the layout!
That's a good looking boxcar! Loved the unboxing, thought I was watching Heath for a moment there. 😀😀
I thought about really drawing it out! But I wanted to get the car on the layout!
Hey Dennis Wow, that was fun. The road is a fictional name that was my great uncle’s railroad. I’m carrying on the tradition of the name in remembrance. Enjoy and thank for the cool video. I’ll keep the freight rolling into the interchange track!
It's a great name for a railroad, I'm proud to have something with such rich heritage and beauty floating around on my layout!
Nice story Dennis and a beautiful model. You do need a new blade in that exacto knife though.
LOL, Maybe I slow played the opening of the box for added drama... 😉
Dennis you are not allowed to watch Heath anymore
LOL, I'm glad you recognized the slow-play!
Al-Ham-Bra
Was it a real Narrow Gauge?
@@OtterCreek Not a Narrow Gauge, there was (copied) The Alhambra-San Gabriel Line was a Pacific Electric interurban line which traveled between Los Angeles and Temple City. The line was built by the Los Angeles & Pasadena Electric Railway starting in October 1901;[2] it was the first standard gauge interurban railway in Southern California. It opened on June 21, 1902 running between Los Angeles General Hospital and the San Gabriel Mission,[2] soon extended to the Masonic Home.[1] The service became a part of the Pacific Electric system by 1911, terminating at the Pacific Electric Building. Tracks were extended to Temple City on July 29, 1924. Cars began bypassing the Mission in 1928. (Source) "Alhambra-San Gabriel Line".
@@lynnmccurdythehdmmrc2561 I confirmed with Richard, his great uncle got him into model railroading and the Alhambra Pacific RR was his Uncle's fictional freelance line. Very cool story, he has continued to model his Uncle's line.
My sister was born there.
Watching the unboxing. It’s really funny how long it took you to cut open the box.
I tried to slow play... but I really did want to get the car out!
@@OtterCreek I noticed and appreciated it!!
Dennis has learned well from you Heath
Did I make it on time?
You did
Hey Dennis , this came out awesome . How makes that brick you used . I like how your roof turned out , it looks great , I think I'll try this on that building I showed in my Live Show.

Always enjoyable watching your videos. The mine project has great promise. Can't wait to see it emerge from "the theater of your mind..." (one of Boomer's comments. :-)
Just hoping my theater show doesn't turn into a horror movie! I'll keep plugging along at it!
Love the process you are going thru to construct your layout. Really enjoying following along. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks John!
I too injoy the thought process Dennis. As I've said in the past, you probably spend as much time on your mockups as the real thing. Very inspirational. I've been bitten because of not planning as much, so cuddles
Thanks Chris, spent less than an afternoon on this one! I'm two weekends into my latest scratch, so... time investment is very minimal on the mock-ups. LOL.
Really enjoying your build series and these mock up run through's with tour thoughts and feelings on placement etc is such a breath of fresh air where a lot of modellers only document the "here's where I'm going to place this... now I've built it and here it is". Looking forward to the series on the mine! - James p.s - What are your intro songs! I find myself wanting to listen to them at random times of the week (forcing me to re-watch your videos :P ) But I would love to know the name and artist as my googlefu fails me! Thanks again for your videos and motivation!
Thanks for the kind words! Yeah, I try and incorporate my thought process as I build. Structures, track, and scenery all interact with each other. I'm trying to get an appropriate blend of what looks pleasing to the eye without sacrificing too much operational value. On the structure build videos I use a song called Dancin' With the Devil. It's an original composition by an artist name Daniel Jordan. He wrote the song and I recorded it in my home studio. He's the vocal and acoustic guitar. I'm all of the other instruments. You won't find my version anywhere but on my channel. You can listen to his entire album including a different version of Dancin' cut in a professional studio here - ua-cam.com/channels/ub3C6vsU8CPkzayFxVTGUA.html On most all of my other videos I use "Dirty Shame", written by Scott Nance my best friend from Highschool. He's singing an playing the dobro, I'm on all the other instruments. Won't find this one anywhere else either, recorded in Otter Creek Studios by yours truly.
Very Nice share Otter Creek!
Thanks for visiting!
Just a thought to consider, a grain elevator and oil dealer next to a large mine seems kinda out of place. In keeping with the agricultural theme, would there be space in this area for your stock pens? Diffficult to tell since I'm not in the 3-D space, it apears as though the mine will be competing with, but still over powering the other structures. The mine and tailings pile in the planned stockpens area will be large enough to put on a real show in a larger space of its' own.
Thanks for your concern Jerry. I'm not proposing both structures in the same spot, it will be an either/or situation based on how I think the scene will look. I have roughly 16 feet of linear space available for the entire town. Most, if not all model railroads can't provide the appropriate space for pure prototypical modeling. I'm doing my best to balance operational interest with visual interest. So no, I might not be able to "sell" a perfect scene. Model Railroad rule #1. I'm the one who has to live with what's "kinda out of place" or not. The reason I build mock-ups is to evaluate these things and it's an ongoing process. I've mocked up the grain elevator and I'm liking it there for now. We'll see what happens with the mine and tailings.
Brownells, I knew you were cool.
lol. Good catch.
I love your organization. I went back and created a Structures spreadsheet after watching!
Thanks Paul! I have spreadsheets... not sure I'm actually organized!
You are way more organized than I am. I like the idea of having a list of buildings and doing mock ups. I think that's my next project. Thanks for the ideas.
Glad you liked it Mike. Yeah, I have lists for my lists....and a spreadsheet to track my lists. I'm not sure it makes me organized tough! LOL.
@@OtterCreek I have a google sheet for my rolling stock inventory. Working mostly on my HO cars but want to add a page for On30.
Well Dennis it's really nice seeing your vision. I swear though you find as much time on the mock ups as the real build but I do understand why. Rather smash a mock than the real deal like I did 😢😢
@@CM-ARM Hey Chris, yeah It is a little more time consuming, but most will be around for a while so I think it's worth it. Most mock-ups I can pump out in an afternoon or two at the most. Time well spent in my opinion.
This is exciting Dennis!🤠 I really enjoyed the entire process that brought to life Frying Pan and Silver Gulch, including the mock-ups, layout, thought process, construction and back stories. And . . . well, here we go again.🤗 Gotta Love It!!! (that list looks kind of obsessive/nerdy - just like something I would do, lol😁) . . . . . . .🚂Lawrence
I'm hoping to get back to builds in Silver Gulch before the end of this month. I really want to finish Black Hawk street and do some Terra forming. Clientele at the Dirty Shame Saloon are a little upset the new stage for live music hasn't been built yet!
@@OtterCreek Well . . . Can't be bothered with bandstands right now. What they need in the meantime is a steady supply of ice-cold Badger Sweat! (the stats don't lie)
Moving right along. Thanks for sharing.
Slow but steady!
Massive railroad you are masterfully creating. Your precision and dedication to accuracy is impressive.
Thank you very much!
Hi Dennis. Have you considered placing the cattle pens across from where you want to put the station? I believe if you research it you will find that was a somewhat common practice.
I'm more in favor of a street that intersects the tracks in that area. Not at a perfect 90 degrees though. We'll see. I for sure want the cattle pens to be on a spur, not a yard track.
Man you are inspiring me to work a lot more on my own layout. Working on the museum projects and 4 Dioramas for a late member's children. Doesn't it feel great when you finish up on a project or just accomplish something tword the finish
Thanks Chris! Yes, I love reaching milestones! I'm hoping I might be finished with track-work by July of next year.
That be awesome
Great video and great work. I was wondering what kind of wood were you using that is that flexible? I'm assuming it is stronger on its side and won't bow down.
At 3:09 explain the material I use. Yes, on edge its extremely strong and has very little deflection.
@OtterCreek in sorry I'll go back again. I was watching/listening and doing things around the house, I must have missed it
The train through Hell Gate looks great, that'll be a signature scene for sure. Superb scenery in Malta too, it was a treat watching the train work there!

You are doing a great job with these videos. You explain things very well. Would you mind sharing a link to the long rail joiners you use- I cannot seem to be able to find that searching. Thank you!
I'm not 100% sure, but I think the longer ones are Peco code 70 (SL-110). The shorter ones are Micro Engineering code 70 (26-70). Thanks for the kind words!
Hey, man, its me again, how are you so far? quick question, do you know if you can place custom orders for any custom scale locomotives by any live steam model train company by any chance?
Not that I know of. I suppose sending an email might help. One of the down sides of modeling steam, the overall selection is limited as compared to diesels. The good news is, that some guys are starting to 3D print stuff, but you can't 3D print a mechanism. I'm not sure what you are wanting to model, but for us steam guys that decision is pretty important because of the lack of available prototypes.
@@OtterCreek i was thinking of a diecast or a cast iron live steam model for what youre doing but in 16mm to the foot scale, basically double the size of the lego narrow gauge Rio Grande trains. but i am not really interested in 3D printed models despite it being my first idea to 3D print my own models for the D&RGW narrow gauge, but thanks anyways.
Awesome Dennis on the milestone and another great video. Dennis can you show us your method of attaching your spline roadbed to the risers? Also how you use the foam to line the outside of the spline roadbed. Your method is different than most modelers and makes more sense. Thank you.
Thanks Sirge, you are about the third person who has asked that, I will try to include explanations in a future video. Glue Squeeze out between the splines will hold the spline to the riser when it dries. Sometimes I will use a small L-Bracket attached to the riser if I think it's needed. The spline is not going anywhere once you have three runs glued up. 5 or more runs and it's rock solid. I come up from the bottom with screws to attach it to the ply-wood splicer plate. I cut strips of foam the same way I cut the spline, (on my radial arm saw) same size as the spline. 1 1/2 in wide. I've used both 1" and 3/4" thick foam. I use wood glue and clamps to attach it.
@@OtterCreek Thanks Dennis. That is what I suspected but wasn't sure.
Congratulations on 3,000 subscribers. You might want to do an episode on the evolution of your pointer, for newer subscribers. The burial scene was quite touching 😢
