Ep 81: How close are we to longevity? | INNER COSMOS WITH DAVID EAGLEMAN
Two certainties are death and taxes; a third is that people will work hard to avoid them both. But why is it so difficult to extend our lifespan? We know how to do it in worms and mice; why is it tricky in humans? Why do so few companies study longevity? What does the near future hold? What would it be like if everyone lived a much longer life? Join Eagleman this week with longevity expert Martin Borch Jensen to discuss the hopes and challenges of longevity science.

Ep 58: What do brains teach us about whether AI is creative? | INNER COSMOS WITH DAVID EAGLEMAN
Is lucid dreaming different from sleep paralysis ???
I’m 60. I very seldom remember my dreams, but of the maybe ten that I remember, only one was in color and it also happened to be a dream as opposed the the usual nightmares. I think I suffer from aphantasia and thought it might be related to that because I also never really see things or people for example, but I “know” that they are there. As to dreams of being chased and not being able to get away or trying to do something repeatedly, my guess would be that since we’re paralysed and given the propensity of the brain to try and compensate, they are a reflection of our inability to move. Lastly, if you asked someone to draw an alien back in the 50s, 60s and 70s, they tended to draw them with antennae and later researchers realized that it was because, back then, everyone with a television used “rabbit ear” antennae. So, even in our waking life, we still incorporate certain cultural or technological phenomena without quite realizing it.
Maybe chill on the AI generated junk? It looks weird. Just a thought, maybe use stock images and videos if there is an issue with getting an artist. Just, do better.
Explain mirror neurons
This makes me think: It's as if we surrender something every night. Now I (somewhat) understand why some children fight sleep so much.
Please talk about nested dreams, I've these a lot. I lucid dream when i have nested dreams. The highest has been 4 nestings. I usually panic when i realise I'm nested dreaming. It kind of feels like I'm gonna get lost and never wake up. It's kind of sooo weird and panic inducing to wake up from, then realise u are still dreaming, then wake up again and still realise, nope, you're still in lala land, PANIC!!!, and only to do this like 2 more times before u see reality. It scares me sometimes.
dimethyltryptamine. Naturally produced by the body throughout the day and then released in the brain as we sleep.
What about Edgar Cayce?
Insightful episode... My neurons thought I should pass this message to yours I suppose 😆😆😆

Starting with the Roswell example.....this won't age well :)
Oh and following it up with the JFK assassination??
Fascinating discussion. Very enjoyable. Thank you!
I can induce lucid dreaming by drinking coffee if I wake up in the middle of the night and go back to sleep a couple hours later. I can eliminate these lucid dreams (which are sometimes disturbing, but not nightmares) by using marijuana before going back to sleep. I can also exit these lucid dreams simply by telling myself it's just a dream and to wake up.
I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression late August of this year. It was so bad at one point that my husband had to call on the priest to calm me down , I was so sad that I didn’t wanted to be in this planet no more and I was spinning down emotionally that I couldn’t even stand up 😢 7 days after my deepest point I started to feel better and is thanks to God. I did fasting, praying, walking daily and after every meals, eat clean ( ZERO SUGAR) drank only water, quit smoking/drinking stop drinking caffeine, and stop using the phone for approximately 2 months and finally I took my prescription medicine. All of that did 98% change in my life I feel better then ever! I strongly suggest to turn to God for healing and seek professional help. 🙏🏼💙✝️
Or maybe the soul remains active while the physical body rests. I had thought for most of my life that I had nightmares. However, later I perceived that I mostly try to problem solve in dreams. There is an inherent difficulty in trying to solve problems while the muscles don't respond. The conflict between motivation and inactivity was perceived as a nightmare.
I once dreamed about dubstep before it was even a thing in my country. It was starting in the UK/ Europe at the time. Premonition, or?
Who else flies in their dreams? 👇
Oh yea. I always trusted my sense of time. Dream time is the same as awake time. After a short while in lucid dreaming they would end. I found I could forbid the dream to end but my powers disapated the longer the dream lasted. After An hour of lucid dreaming I'd be exhausted , super sleepy and unable to walk. So I'd let it go and sleep soundly til morning
I have had perhaps 1,000 lucid dreams. Before I fall asleep I'd make a plan of what to dream. Started these controlled dream in response to scary dreams as a child. When the T. rex tries to eat me I'd close my dream eyes and kick and scream myself awake. At some point this became irrelevant as already I was aware I was asleep. No more scary dreams was the goal. Jumping head first into a rock was a little difficult as instinct of self preservation interfered at first. The key for me was proving to myself that this was indeed a dream. So I'd jump into the air. If I was dreaming I'd inevitably take way too long to fall back to the ground. Turns out if I'm asking if I'm dreaming or not is proof that I'm asleep.i could fly or do psychokinesis step in front of cement trucks and be a total jerk to those unfortunates I meet while dreaming. Eventually I ran out of things to try. I'm 65 now and lucid dreams are there if I want but the shine has worn thin. For many years dreams were very fun. I recommend any and all to get control of unconscious mind . Your imagination is the only limit. Anyone can do it!
Ok. The hell is up with all of these shitty AI generated images and videos? They look like dogshit.
Why are you constantly flicking between framing views on your face during your discourse? Is this some attempt to increase interest or a gimmick you think adds to the content? Unnecessary
REM happen when early rising neuros in the brain attempt to wake up other picture-neurons prior to total realistic-illusions' to picture coherence.
Ok legit question... Am I the only person here that does dream about reading and using my phone? How many times have i woken up and had to check my chats to make sure if I actually wrote that text or just dreamed about it. And it's not gibberish either. I've read books in my dreams. I even died in some of them and dreamed about the "afterlife" which sucked btw cuz i was just stuck in a grey void for a while with a screen with all of my stats.
Very interesting.. i have to ponder.. What would mamals on a planet that was tidally locked to its star dream of.. the ones on the dark side versus the ones on the light side... .. I like your hypothesis.. but as a Software engineer.. I always thought of it as a defragmentation.. throwing away of inane and worthless input throughout the day and filing away data and optimizing important aspects of the days experience.
Dr. Eagleman, thank you for this very interesting podcast. I always wondered why I had such a hard time using my phone while dreaming. Just last night, I dreamt that I was listening to the radio and heard a song that I really liked. I tried to pull up an app on my phone called “Shazam” that helps determine the names of songs by just listening for a few seconds; however, time after time, I couldn’t even type the word “Shazam” on my phone. After what seemed like a couple of minutes of failed attempts, someone on the phone said hello. In my dream, I recognized that I must have dialed a number in error, apologized, and quickly hung up. But after I hung up, I sensed that I recognized the voice on the other end. It was an old boss named “Shahram” who I worked for 20 years ago and had not spoken to since 2005. How my mind came up with this misdial scenario, I have no idea! Hahaha
Discovered you about two weeks ago and can't believe you're not huge among the neuro-folks on UA-cam! This one was super fascinating in particular. Wow
How/why does the same electrical stimulation disrupt and/or strengthen neural responses???
maybe its like a pilot light in a gas stove.
I had to stop listening half way through and I feared if I heard one more "like" or "right" from Martin I might throw my phone at the wall. Shame as the subject matter is interesting.
I have dreams about my phone all the time, mostly I can’t type in phone numbers or texts correctly and it’s super annoying. I’ve always had regular lucid dreams and can remember them pretty well
These people believe their academic BS is real, but it’s not. The only thing real are multiple imaginations harmonizing as one thought. Example: if 1000 builders are building a structure using 1000 different blue prints, that building would be a monstrosity; however if all the builders were given the same blue print for the same building the builders would all be in harmony, and build the building according to one blue print, not multiple, different blue prints. The closer we are to truth, the less we dream because we know truth, and there is no need to dream about the disconnecting mis-information that does not fit any reality. When people are harmonized imaginatively as one, they are at peace with one another; however when people are imaginatively dis-harmonized they are at war with each other. It is simple, so when you hear somebody using complex words and hard to understand ways of thinking, they are trying to force BS to be true, and we will never see the truth that is easy to see 👀
Almost sounds like an after dark for computer (Screensaver) ... When not in use puts on an moving image to preserve the screen so doesn't damage monitor..
I am bilingual and learnt to speak and write 2 languages from childhood. Greek and English. IMO There is most definitely a different perspective of the world given depending on the language you speak. I see and feel this as a bilingual person growing up with two cultures. I see the difference when I compare myself to a person who has grown up with one language and culture. The next best thing to expand the mind if you’re from a single speaking language is to travel and see and experience the world and other cultures. 😊
I'm about to go dream so I'm listening 👀 ...
Blip it and reset it Blip it and reset it can anyone help me please oh god
Why do drains beam? Better quebstion.
Dreaming for me is mostly dark and terrifying. Once in a great while I get a glimpse of Something that makes me feel positive but never seem to remember those dreams .
Every time i run in my sleep. It's a struggle. when i punch someone or something, there's no power behind the punch.
Today, Facebook is the holder of our memories open to the world to recollect…
I wish every college professor was as good as this guy. So much enthusiasm! Such good speaking skills. Explains things so well. Includes visuals. Brings in other experts from time to time. It’s a like a free college course taught by an A-list professor.
I was really good at lucid dreaming. So good that I could ask questions, and IT would give me answers. I then asked how all this worked. Do no harm
I often have dreams about not knowing how to use my phone or forgetting how to use my work computer
Dreams are a peek into the future. A dream is made up of thousands of dreams all at once. Your mind is just giving you what is meaningful. So why do you sometimes see future events in your dreams? Ask your mind that question before you go to sleep, and you may find out. Do no harm.
Brains do not dream. Brains do not store memory. Brains do not produce Consciousness or thought. You attribute too much to this pile of throbbing meat. 'Dreams' like any and everything else is what is perceived before us at the moment. 1) Nothing exists but One Consciousness/Mind. One, a 'Singularity'! 2) We are all unique Perspectives (Souls) that/who, collectively, comprise Consciousness. This explains the use of the plural 'Us', Elohim, etc... 3) What we perceive, every moment, is Mind!
Let me save you some time --- We don't know why we dream.
I’ve listened to a few of your videos and they’re interesting but I’m begging for you to learn the word ‘they’ when referring to a person of unspecified gender. The default is not ‘he’

Thanks for the nice presentation. Nice overview of the current scientific worldview. But I think the foundation is a little shaky. IMO the very definition of consciousness was problematic and when you start off with a suspicious premise, everything is shaky. I find it illogical to start talking about consciousness "after waking up". I have very rich sleep content that was just cut off instantly. There are undeniably different levels of awareness during sleep stages, not to mention lucid dreaming which is as conscious as it can get. In many parts of sleep, self-awareness may not be there, but awareness is present in many instances. But in any case, self-awareness cannot be the measure of consciousness, because in that case we'll have to exclude lots of very vivid conscious states like being engrossed in music, different "flow" states, some psychoactive substance peak states, etc. Also, increased brain activity doesn't always correlate with increased awareness. For example, during psilocybin and several other substance trips, brain activity is dramatically decreased, but awareness is heightened.
Never trust a toilet in a dream 😳
