Oakamoor Village - Early Evening Walkabout - 4th September, 2024.
Oakamoor Village, Staffordshire. Early Evening Walkabout, 4th September, 2024.
Oakamoor Parish History
Our village is situated in the Churnet Valley in the Staffordshire Moorlands and has a history of industrial activity dating back to the Norman Conquest; we are, however, now a rural community.
The Heritage Trail established around the village gives the visitor a taste of the activities that have taken place here during the last 300 years.
The area of land adjacent to the river Churnet has been used for centuries for industrial activities. The present River Bridge was erected in 1710 and widened for turnpike traffic in 1778. It is still in regular use today.
The weir and sluice gates were built in the 18th century to power strip mills owned by Thomas Patten. At its peak, around 1860, four water mills were operating in the factory. The largest, overshot, wheel was 20 ft in diameter.
The Frogall to Uttoxeter canal passed through this area and was constructed by John Rennie opened in 1811. The arch of Rennie’s road bridge can still be seen in the garden wall of the Cricketers’ Arms.
The canal closed in 1843 to make way for the railway which opened in June 1847, the station opened in 1849 .The Churnet Valley line succumbed to Dr Beeching’s axe in 1963 followed quickly by the demolition of Bolton’s Copper Works later that year.
There has been a mill at Oakamoor since medieval times and there is a record it being owned by the Foley family in 1683, in 1761 George Kendal was the ironmaster and in 1790 Thomas Patten began serious production.
This continued until 1851 when Thomas Bolton bought the site.
In 1857 the first Transatlantic Telegraph Cable was manufactured at the site.Production continued until 1962 when the factory was closed and all production switched to Froghall.

Nice 😂 I Love it. 👍 The panning is much improved. Hope this was a conscious decision? The gimbal glitches just add to the fun. I get the up/down tilt controls the wrong way round every time on my drone but usually manage to hide them in the edit. 😁Audio levels are still a bit up and down but better than the last time I commented. Happy to help with any audio issues if you are interested. Some lovely video transitions/effects and the extra info in the text is great. Like the buggy/pram info. Our eldest Quercy, a Jack Russel Cairn Cross, is now 15 and we're using a proper doggy buggy to get her around when we want to extend the walks a bit more than she can manage on her own. Our two boys, are Monti, Jack crossed with a who knows what,12 and Gibson, full blown Jack, 7, and they are both still eager to go mile after mile. Just a shame I can't go with them that far any longer. Great video mate, well done, keep 'em comin' Cheers 🍺

Always like your stuff and am delighted to see the new gimbal in operation. Much improved watch-ability as it's taken away a significant ammout of the old "wobble". I guess it's going to take a little getting use to as the random shots of the sky were a bit odd.😆 If I'm being super critical, I'd suggest slowing the speed of your panning down a tad. I make the same mistake with my drone when doing a 360. The landscape rushes past far too quickly and it makes the Wife dizzy. We do know those Parkhall paths intimately though I've not been able to walk well enough to tackle them for quite some time, especially with three dogs. Great to see them again nonetheless. Only other comment, not gimbal related, is the audio. It sounds a little over driven through my JVC sound bar. The bass is really quite harsh so the whole track could do with dropping a few db to save my speaker cones. 👍 Apart from that, lovely stuff, looking forward to the next exciting episode. Cheers 🍺

Hey Lyndon, thanks for your comments mate. Good to hear you enjoy my local walkabout videos. Parkhall can be a bit brutal in parts, especially after the rains. I still realy enjoy it though, especially has it's quite close to my home. I'll do my best with the Gimbal control, not too sure with audio thougjh as it's not really my forte tweaking DB's and that. Stay on the bricks my friend. Till next time, be good, stay healthy and take care.

NORTON GREEN, BILLINGHAM, DARLINGTON, MIDDLESBROUGH, NEWCASTLE, STOCKTON, YORK & YARM - NEIGHBOURS AND LOCAL HISTORY IN THE NORTH OF ENGLAND Most people living in the North of England think they know their neighbours and local history but how would you know your neighbour worked for MI6? Most who knew the Fairclough family didn’t have a clue that from the seventies Bill Fairclough was a secret agent (MI6 codename JJ) working for various intelligence agencies. What’s more they had no idea he was following in his parents’ footsteps. Bill's parents met during the Second World War when his father, ostensibly working for Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI), worked secretly on creating bombs to wipe out the Nazi's industrial hinterland. They married in Yarm in 1941. After the war in Europe ended in May 1945, Dr Richard Alan Fairclough continued to work for British Intelligence (MI1). Not long after retiring from ICI in the seventies, Richard Fairclough opened and ran an antiquarian book shop business in Yarm until his death in 1987. The book shop was a bit of an enigma as it was also a haunt for spooks. When not gated at St Peter’s School, York Bill Fairclough spent most of his childhood and early teens in the North East of England. As a child in the fifties he was educated at Red House School in Norton. He lived in Billingham and then in a vast white house (once the home of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley) in Norton Green overlooking the duck pond. In Bill’s teens, the Faircloughs lived in Middleton St George and later in Yarm. He also lived in flats he rented near nightclubs he helped run during the late sixties and early seventies in Portrack, Stockton-on-Tees and Jesmond in Newcastle upon Tyne. Conveniently for him they were near the offices of the firm of Chartered Accountants he worked for in Middlesbrough and Newcastle upon Tyne. So if you lived, worked or visited any of these places you may well have unwittingly encountered this “spooky” family, been their neighbours or inhabited the houses they lived in. A quick web-search will even disclose some of the addresses where they lived. Mind you, if you live in any of them now, best sweep them for bugs! Details of where the Faircloughs lived and worked are given in most of Bill Fairclough’s bios on the web such as can be found at everipedia.org/wiki/lang_en/bill-fairclough. If you were as fascinated as we were, you can also read the raw fact based thriller Beyond Enkription, the first stand-alone novel to be released in The Burlington Files series (theburlingtonfiles.org/#/reviews). It’s a memorable and distinctively different noir espionage thriller based on his and his family’s experiences in 1974.

Thanks Dek! It's all my own work and I've now done the 10.000 steps thing for the day according to my App on my phone. This is one hell of a healthy past time I've got going here. Care to join me some time?
