ESPixelstick v4 Install - xLights and FPP Setup
Currently they only offer Evo's with 4 inch spacing. This means that props that require you to cut & splice in-between pixels can turn into a very tedious task. The wire being so thin and 4 wires instead of three makes it even more difficult. I do love the appearance of the Evo's that's why I purchased 1,300 of them. However I used them on four 360 mini trees. That is 300 evos per tree. If you look at the mini tree wiring layout in Xlights each tree required me to splice in six 4 wire strands. That is 48 splices per tree X 4 making a total of 192 splices! All splices were soldered, protected with heat shrink, then wrapped with electrical tape and tested with Ohm meter and a falcon controller before put in the display. So I am sure Mattos knows that certain models/props require them to be cut, so the 3 year warranty is then useless=meaning no warranty if you cut them. The other concern is how fragile they are. Our mini trees are across our driveway, They must me moved twice per day so the wife can get her car in & out coming & going to work. The connector on Evo's due to the thin wires have a tendency to twist and snap off flush with the connector making it impossible to repair. Had to buy another 100 just so I could cut the 4pin male end off it. Then another tree had stopped working, during my trouble shooting I unplugged a working evo tree and plugged in the none working evo tree to rule out a bad x-connect extension which turned out to be fine. Then when I plugged the working evo mini tree back in to the exact same extension & port it never worked again. So out of 1,3 Evos pixels, I now only have 600 evos that still work. I have decided to NEVER use evo pixels for anything they simply cannot compare to the old bullet pixels as far as being tough & strong. I can never trust them with such thin wires. I never seen wires snap like threads before, this has been a nightmare for me and I have learnt my lesson. The Evo's, even the working ones are going in the trash and being replaced with the 12mm bullet standard that has served all of us well over the years.
How do you think this tree would fair if you had no ring for the base and just staked each strip to the ground? Nice diy build.
How did you enter the controller into FPP to get to that point
Not sure what specifically you are referring to? The first part of the video shows add the controllers to xLights and then pushing that configuration to the controllers
Very Good explanation. You lost me though when suddenly there was a Raspberry Pi thrown into the mix. Didn't see that coming and still don't understand what its function is between the ESP32 and Xlights. I think several of us would like to know if the Pi is essential. UPDATE: one of the other commenters explained that I can just use XScdeduler in Xlights so no need for the Pi. Thanks!!
Correct, xSchedule would work too. I have the Pi doing my audio output as well instead of running from a computer
How did you make the candy canes? What material is it or did you buy it from somewhere?
They are coro from Boscoyo
How did you string the star pixels?
Uses the standard xLights star model
can you say about how many clips per tree you used ?
115 on the 6 foot and 55 on the 4 foot
@@justinzdesign thanks printing the clips now so I now know I need 440 clips
Did you end up using any guy wires?
I didn’t as it was close to the house, new location this year but I think I’m still gonna risk it without them
What do you set input/ output to? I see everything on the Pi and Kulp k32 shows its playing but I NO output to my lights. I can test output on both and the lights work. Will not light using xLights either . I've been trying for weeks , tried every video I could find nothing worked and I know there's something I turned on or OFF by mistake . Thanks
If you follow the setup in xLights and also turn on via multisync then no need to touch the input/output tab. However if you are saying it doesn't work from xLights either then I guess something is wrong on the controller tab there (IP address maybe). For hands on support then I recommend the xLights Zoom Room
@@justinzdesign Thank You Finally got it working
Very easy to follow. Thank you for putting this instructions for us.
Glad it was helpful!
Question ! What is your Mega tree base diameter please? I'm using your plans to build my tree.
@@mharris7340 about 3 and a half feet
Question ! What is your Mega tree base diameter please? I'm using your plans to build my tree.
About 3.5 feet
Awesome video thank you! question, what are you using and how are you going to mount this box? It didnt really come with anything to mount, thank you!
I have screwed them to a small board and used brackets off that
If I have a backup from last year on a different version of the fpp software and I update to the new version will I be able to put the backup back in? I tried booting the pi today and got hardware interrupt error. So I figured the drive is corrupt or the software is.
I have never tried this to find out. If I had an issue then I just start fresh and push configuration from xLights.
@justinzdesign yah this is what I ended up having to do. Drive seems to be ok.
You are using 4 outputs, each havinf a data line. How do you power inject, do you have another box for power injecrion only ?
I don't use any power injection in my show as I keep the pixel count low enough to not have any issues. However you can either pull from the same board or a seperate box. Just make sure not to cross the positive line from mutliple power supplies
I bought these lights, and I am just having a hard time with them, and it's the software side of things I am having trouble with. Unfortunately, you didn't go over that part, and although their CS was fast to reply to me, I just can't figure them out, and I have WLED running all over my house every year for the holidays.
The ones I have are RGB, the only thing I remember was they had a different color order that I had to adjust for
Did you ever get yours going in wled? I just got these in and im struggling to get the color order correct. Usuing WS2811 every other puck is a different color. If I set it to SK6812 it lights up correctly, but then the color order is wrong.
I actually think I got it going? LED TYPE: SK6812 COLOR ORDER: BRG SWAP: swap W and G
@@MiasmaFPV This is the correct formula.
I am using this for a mobile display, but when I start a sequence not near my home wifi the sequence will only play ~ the first minute before relooping that minute. How can I change a setting so that the ESPixelStick does not require internet connection to continue the sequence? TIA
Shouldn't be any requirement for internet as long as the sequence is stored on the sd card
Can you show how you tie in the controllers to the raspberry pi? Wanting to do my first year with just a dig-quad but a bit unsure on whats all needed to feed a dig-quad off a pi
I covered the xLights and FPP setup in this one ua-cam.com/video/jFTAyYs-KBk/v-deo.html
Hello, hopefully you see this. I have installed FPP through the raspberry pi imager, installed it on my RPI 3B, connected it to my router, got the IP of 192.168.1.38 BUT FPP does not show up on my WiFi list or listed as a device on my router. I can connect to the setup page by using HTTPS://FPP but not my using the listed IP address. The way I need to use this setup requires the Pi to be accessible by WiFi. Any help is appreciated.
Further more, I don’t have the option to choose between ETH and WLAN under the network options. Could there be an issue with my Pi’s WiFi module?
If it got an IP then it was via wired connection, you would then need to do the network settings in FPP to connect Wifi. If the option isn't there then something is off with the wifi module

I’m looking at these for some stage lighting I’m doing. Do you know if it will work with Artnet?
I am not sure if WLED does, it would be more about the firmware
Thank you.
You're welcome!
Are those 80# bags of concrete?
I think they were
Is the star made from Delrin?
3d printed using PETG
How do you get that cool rendering window? Can't find anything about it in the manual.
Double click on the rendering status bar at the bottom and it opens up
Awesome, it's in sync!
Yeah!
What other elements in your display are EVO pixel populated, other than the Globe?
Other one is the EFL Gummy Bear
outstanding job sir, however this video cannot help me tho, cause im gonna build a 3D Icosahedron with mesh 5 in blender then transfer the model to xlights (LED's gonna be the vertecis) but heres the point, i have zero clue how to do that because it does not obey any specific 2D pattern like yours in this video, can you help me with a hint or tip? cause im already perplexed by these scattered toturials about 3D costum submodel building in xlights software. ty.
Unfortunately xLights is not very friendly with building 3d models which is why this was a pain to make work. However basically you are taking "slices" from from to back to create the layers
The AE+ version adds 3 channels to the dig quad, 7 total. I noticed in your video, the visualizer only showed 6 channels.
There is updated variants mentioning the AE+ in xLgihts now that includes them all
Thanks for the video. Can I run a show directly from the laptop using xschedule and still have the ESP pixelsticks running in remote mode? That is, using them as FPP remote (sending sync packets only) without an actual FPP player unit? I need to be portable with a bring my own router for my use case and I’m trying to avoid wifi interference by playing as much remotely as possible.
Yes, that should work to. I haven't personally done it though.
Nice video dude. Got it done using an Quinled AE+ on first try!
Glad it helped
Do you have a link to the adhesive antenna clip you used?
Yup, I had them laying around from other uses but work well for this amzn.to/3Sisjel
What size J bolts?
Got the ones from YPS with the topper: yourpixelstore.com/product/j-bolts-1-4-20-x-2-5-16-pack-of-16/
Does the smart receiver act as another controller? Can i just run cat6 to it in another enlclosure and power supply?
It is an extension of another controller, the cat cable is not an internet connection
Great review. I think I'm going to try a set of these where weight of the prop is an issue. Anyone tried these with Boscoyo or Gilbet Engineering props?
Should work with them too, just might be tight if they don't have the nubs so then they more pop in
That's neat! Thanks for the knowledge. Subbed for LED content.
Thanks for the sub!
Do you plan on making the spike extension file available in your Etsy store?
Agreed, picking these lights up and it would be beneficial to have the spike extension file. Thanks for the video!
Added to the description now
@@justinzdesignThank you for sharing that. For the record, I would’ve been happy to pay for it. Cheers!
Nice job
Thanks!
So if I want to save a sequence to WLED to run it on a wearable, would I need a raspberry pi with FPP? Or can it all be run internally
No sequence saving in WLED, there is devices with SD card slots that cna run espixelstick and then can run a local sequence
The tree effects in this one are sick!
Showstopper does a lot of good megatree stuff!
how many pixels in total?
250 in that one
I cant wait to show my daughter! Shes gonna lose it 😂 so cool dude!
Hope she enjoys!
Stunning is all I can classy and not over the top well done
Thanks!
show is looking really good. Really like the globe prop.
Me too, I need to spend some more time perfecting the effects on it. Text and images aren't always the greatest
Do you know if there is a way to reduce output brightness in Xlights with an ESP32 and WLED like this guy shows on a Falcon (ua-cam.com/video/xLd35K_e65Q/v-deo.html) @12:25 in the linked video?
There is no way to control the overall brightness from xLights settings. For Falcon and Kulp it's a controller port config as opposed to an overall brightness adjustment for WLED
Many thanks for the content Nicely done and well presented....
Thanks!
What's the purpose of the remote.? I thought the player (rpi) has the sequences and media along with telling the controllers what to display?
The remote FPP device also holds a sparse sequence with pixel data tied to it's ports so the connection from the player to remote is then only sync packets and not full pixel data
Does this work on orange pi also?
I have heard it needs it's own compile, I have no direct experience with it though
If I'm just adding a generic esp32 d1 mini with WLED, what model would I choose?
Model is then WLED and there is variants for ESP8266 and ESP32
Great video. I’m newish to using Raspberry Pi & FPP. This really helped me to setup my Raspberry.
Glad it helped!
Great light show, Justin! I ended up buying the same sequence, but have not had luck mapping the effects to my talking elements. Did you end up doing that custom?
Couldn't tell you specifically for this one, but sometime I need to just add the singing effect to my prop and select the face definition and lyric track as opposed to importing to it
Where did you buy this from ?
