How to Draw the 5 DIFFERENT SHADOWS for Comic Books
Join the FREE weekly challenge here: retrosuperheroart.wordpress.com
Shadows are a major part of drawing expressive and exciting comic books. To do them accurately you need a good understanding of perspective, but there are a few tricks to speed up the process.
I’d categorise the shadows in
-Backlight Shadow
-Drop Shadow (classic / texture / corner / jump)
Grab and pencil and try them out!

Oh, awesome video! Shadows are difficult and I wonder how you know how long a shadow an object will cast. Hey, though, suggestion for the next video, I was watching the video here and wondering whether you had less energy with your voice, then realized the music was the problem (my opinion, anyway) that kinda muted the energy, affecting how I paid attention, so thought I'd mention here.

    • @retrosuperheroart2202

Good question, I went over it pretty quickly in 2:07 so the line from the light down to the ground where it hits the ground line would be the length. In the samples like the explosion and gun guy I eyeballed it because there were no surroundings in perspective. Personally I hardly think about perspective, in JRJR's pencils I see he drops the whole grid oldschool for almost every panel. Now that's dedication. Thanks for mentioning the music issue. I'm on it.

Also tracing and copying the art to learn how to draw. I remember realizing that Quesada was doing his own version of Mignola in the legs. That was a major point of starting to categorize these styles. And McFarlane, that guys art was just so magic and different, I just had to know how he did it, so putting his comics next to others to see what he did different.

@@retrosuperheroart2202According to Miller, the comic would have been a "piece of propaganda". Do you like state funded propaganda? Funded by the friends of Israel.... Personally I don't think comics in this day and age should be used in this way. What's next batman dropping bombs on children fleeing isreali solders? I know wonder women did that in real life but we all have to draw a line, otherwise it all falls into propaganda trash pile.

I live in Japan so I’m very aware of Manga. You’re right, their action is next level. The bending of the characters with the action lines. I made a few videos about that as well. If you’re interested I have a manga playlist. When Joe Mad did his manga inspired stuff it felt very new in the Marvel universe somehow, but theres always been crossover I think.

I am a manga reader too, but disrespecting other work is not good mann. Yeah the fights in Mangas are way cool, but I really like the Frank miller's fight sequence. It is different from other comics. Indie comics writers should take notes to make more fighting comics . This is maybe not as peak as Sakamoto Days fight sequence. but it is still peak. So, don't disrespect others work 😊

Retro, your tip is really helpful. Yesterday, I was practicing a bit using Kirby's style as an example, and I followed exactly what you suggested. I even decided on the line variation I wanted, already in the sketch, just before moving on to the inking. Now, the challenge has evolved into creating scenes with the goal of maybe making a full page, and so on. I'm really happy to see the challenge growing more and more. Congratulations, Retro! :D

Awesome! Todd McFarlane said in an interview he keeps his pencils very loose and then makes decisions with the inking, but for us mortals it's probably a good idea to know what to do in advance, hehe. And I saw the Spider-Man 300 cover in an expo once, there's a ton of white-out on it, so I guess it's just a matter of where you put the time in, before or after.

6:41 Thanks for the criticism, something felt a little off to me about the image. I originally though that I should have extended wolverines leg further, but your right, the punch isn't very clear if you don't already know the homage.
